| Cheese for Supper. | | 2008-07-21 15:32:00 | | July 22 ... July 22 is said to be the anniversary of the day in 1376 that the Pied Piper led the children out of the German town of Hamelin. Undoubtedly a mythical date for a mythical event, but part of all our heritage thanks to Robert Browning’s poem. “Rats! They fought the dogs and killed the cats, And bit the babies in the cradles, And ate the cheeses out of the vats.” The ‘anniversary’, real or not, made me think (as every story does) about food. Not rats, I will save the ratty food story for another day, but cheese. I feel that this blog has been sadly lacking in cheese stories and recipes. The Welsh Rabbit series (here and here) has been sadly neglected, and very few were able to shed any light on Potato Cheese. I give you two cheese dishes, both now merely faint ancestral dreams, having suffered death by nutritional correctness. Battered deep fried cheese. For supper. Cheese Patties (with Cream). For supper. From a time when people were... | | By: The Old Foodie | | |

| | Ten Minutes Until Supper | | 2008-07-15 17:28:59 | | Salinda is home and sullen. Things aren't going her way. Hopefully she's not going to let things continue to go downhill as I need to have some peace tonight. Every time I think, "Hey, I'm getting better at not getting anxious" she does something, or gets in a mood and then I am faced with the same anxiety as before.I have gotten more done in the past two days when I am only at my desk for a few short blocks of time than I do when I sit here all day. One project in particular is almost done and I have actually been straightening my desk and going through papers. I have kept my email at right around 19... even though they keep coming in. Maybe by days end tomorrow I'll see a blank inbox, though a couple of the emails represent big projects.... so that might not happen.but at least i'm making progress, something that doesn't seem to have been happening much lately.... | | By: Never a Dull Moment | | |

| Dinner with colleagues... Supper with the folks? | | 2008-07-10 05:11:35 | | I'm super duper busy at work today and I'm predicting tomorrow is going to be worst. OMG! I'm going to be talking about "blogging & media engagement" or something like that in front of 25-30 people! I'm sooo freaking out here!
Geez. Seriously Gav (as in Gavin Foo) needs a secretary. That dumb-dumb only sent over the agenda like this afternoon! God... What was he thinking! Oh well. Thank god I have Aaron (as in Aaron Koh) to help me out with this. Wahahahaha!
Anyhow.
I only have like 5 minutes to type this entry and I gotta go over to IMM to pick up my colleague and head down to Bugis for a somewhat 88DB gathering. (I'm so proud of myself for getting this thing going by the way. Wahahahaha!)
Oh yeah. Got to go back to Teddybear's place for supper too. >.... | | By: Princess Sabrina - Just memories... | | |
| | A Hearty Crab Supper. | | 2008-06-25 14:30:00 | | June 26 Dorothy Wordsworth, the sister of the poet William Wordsworth, was a writer herself , although she confined her work to a private journal. On this day in 1828 she was in the Isle of Man, and wrote: “ … Douglas harbour illuminated; … Joanna welcomed us with a dish of crabs sent by her kind friend Mrs. Putnam. Stars appearing at our return; after a hearty supper of crabs etc. retired to rest.” Crabs are decapod crustaceans. They are also very good to eat, if you don’t mind shelling out the crab meat, or shelling-out for pre-shelled meat in a restaurant. For some reason that I cannot explain, my first thought on reading this journal entry was ‘What have crabs to do with crab apples?’. Crab Apples are small, excruciatingly sour wild apples impossible to eat raw but fabulous for jam/jelly. Is the word in this context related to that of the fine animal that made Dorothy a fine supper? The origin, it has to be admitted, is uncertain. The OED give... | | By: The Old Foodie | | |
| | Burns Supper | | 2008-02-06 12:56:02 | | We're back in Aberdeen after 6-weeks holiday in Indonesia and Vietnam. The prospect of going back to cold, gray, wet weather wasn't really appealing; especially when we were transiting in Amsterdam and saw outside the window of Schiphol Airport. But surprise, surprise, last weekend wasn't actually that bad. The sun was shining, the sky was clear and blue, except there were no birds were chirping (they must have migrated to warmer lands), and there are no leaves left on trees. And it's very cold. But surely the cold weather doesn't stop people from doing stuffs. And here comes Burns Supper to look forward to.clipped from en.wikipedia.orgA Burns supper is a celebration of the life and poetry of the poet Robert Burns, author of many Scots poems including "Auld Lang Syne," which is generally sung as a folk song at Hogmanay and other New Year celebrations around the world. The suppers are normally held on or near the poet's birthday, January 25, sometimes known as Burns night, although they ... | | By: Finally Woken | | |

| Supper Out and A Different Lifestyle | | 2007-07-27 00:51:00 | | Bart and I had supper tonight with Pat O'Brien and one of his staff members and her daughter. Just a Sport's Bar, nothing fancy, but the food was good and, as imagined, the conversation was fascinating. We first went to part of Pat's workshop on Humor (or, as he pronounces it, Yuma) and did some laughing, and some thinking, and some listening....Then supper we shared about our lives, got caught up to date, and listened to a little of his staff member, Mary's, story. Mary does foster care for much older teens 16-21 and makes a permanent commitment to them. She was telling us about an article in the paper about her and how she allowed her address to be printed.A result of the article was a letter that was she received from a boy in jail. A 16 year old, he wrote to her and said, "I know you usually take gay and lesbian kids, and I'm not either one, but I think I'd like to live at your house." He invited her to visit him in jail and she agreed. When his sentence is over, she pla... | | By: Never a Dull Moment | | |

| | United Nations Orders Terrorists to Their Rooms Without Supper | | 2007-06-26 00:19:00 | | The United Nations Security Council issued today a “strong” condemnation of the terrorist attacks that killed six UN peacekeepers from Spain in southern Lebanon. I am curious if the United Nation’s next step is to sentence the terrorists to timeout? Maybe they will send a “surge” of peacekeeper reinforcements armed with really expensive clipboards? Jimmy Carter can offer to build the terrorists a nice home if they cooperate. In all seriousness, however, the United Nations has become an abject embarrassment. While the UN’s purpose may be laudable, in practice the UN cannot solve any world conflicts without direct American involvement. For example, about a decade ago, genocide took place in Europe and in Rwanda. Yet, the United Nations sought diplomacy. As expected, it was not until brute force was used that the genocide stopped. Presently, 200,000 people have been brutally murdered in Sudan; Iran threatens to wipe Israel off the Map; and Women are brutalized thr... | | By: Copious Dissent - Your Daily Dose of Liberty | | |
| | Cheesecakes for Supper. | | 2007-05-16 21:25:00 | | Today, May 17th …Jane Austen wrote a letter to her sister Cassandra on this day in 1799, from the town of Devizes in Wiltshire.“Our journey yesterday went off exceedingly well; nothing occurred to alarm or delay us. We found the roads in excellent order, had very good horses all the way, and reached Devizes with ease by four o'clock. I suppose John has told you in what manner we were divided when we left Andover, and no alteration was afterwards made. At Devizes we had comfortable rooms and a good dinner, to which we sat down about five; amongst other things we had asparagus and a lobster, which made me wish for you, and some cheesecakes, on which the children made so delightful a supper as to endear the town of Devizes to them for a long time.”Cheesecakes for supper sound like a wonderfully indulgent holiday treat for children, but then the nature of cheesecakes is such that they can be varied to suit any occasion. Once upon a long time ago, they were simpler and perhaps more e... | | By: The Old Foodie | | |
