    The health benefits of antioxidants have been well publicized in the last several years.But what actually are antioxidants?Antioxidants are potential disease-fighters found naturally in some foods and also in synthetic supplements. They work by ridding the body of harmful free radicals, the "nasties" responsible for cellular destruction which may lead to a number of conditions such as heart disease and cancer.Keep in mind that even though the media is big on antioxidant consumption (ever heard of "superfoods"?), the research on these is not conclusive. This means that some studies have pointed to the health benefits of antioxidants, while others haven't.Take a recent example...a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine. You may have heard about his one...researchers in Denmark reviewed thousands of clinical studies, omitting those which were poorly designed or had flawed conclusions. Their results pointed in the opposite direction of what you would think, stating that antioxidants may actually increase your risk of death!Confusing to say the least!What to believe? Its helpful to keep in mind that the results of one study alone are not sufficient proof, the whole body of research must be examined. That is what these Danish researchers attempted to do, but other scientists have disagreed with the conclusions they reached. One argument is that if antioxidants, especially supplements, were that harmful, we should have seen evidence of this in an increasing number of deaths.We haven't.Here's what I see as the bottom line now...there is insufficient reason to stop taking antioxidant supplements if you are currently doing so, with the exception of excessively large doses of vitamins or minerals which may be toxic at high levels.At this point I don't feel comfortable recommending supplementation, though; there is just so much yet to be discovered in this area. A new U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) docket was published on the FDA website last month. The draft guidance, when finalized, will represent the FDA’s current thinking on complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). Docket No. 2006D-0480: Draft Guidance for Industry on Complementary and Alternative Medicine Products and Their Regulation by the Food and Drug Administration (1) discusses when a CAM product is subject to the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (the Act) or the Public Health Service (PHS) Act.     Do you take a dietary supplement in hopes of delaying staying young longer? If you are, your monies are contributing to the whopping $5.8 million that are spent each year on dietary supplements.$5.8 million! Incredible.What's probably more incredible (if that's possible) is that there really is no scientific evidence which proves that these supplements are effective.What's worse is that there is very little regulation of these supplements, thus you may unknowingly take a pill that doesn't even contain what the label says it does!
