Sjögren's syndrome is an autoimmune disorder in which immune cells attack and destroy the exocrine glands that produce tears and saliva. It is named after Swedish ophthalmologist Henrik Sjögren (1899-1986), who first described it. Sjögren's syndrome is also associated with rheumatic disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis, and it is rheumatoid factor positive in 90 percent of cases. The hallmark

    Six Surgical Miracles
    2008-06-17 00:03:27
A 6-year-old Texas girl had the entire right half of her brain removed to stop devastating seizures; amazingly, her memory and personality are expected to remain intact. But this is just one of many incredibly delicate and difficult surgeries performed in recent history. From a doctor who operated on himself to surgeons who execute complicated procedures on the tiniest fetuses while they are still in the womb, here are six of the most unusual surgical miracles in modern history.1. Surgery to Remove Half a Child's Brain. On June 11, 6-year-old Jessie Hall of Aledo, Texas, had the entire right side of her brain removed by neurosurgeon Ben Carson at Johns Hopkins Children's Center in Baltimore. The rare procedure is called a hemispherectomy, and though drastic, it was considered the best possible treatment for Jessie, who suffers from Rasmussen's encephalitis, a progressive degeneration of the cerebral cortex that causes uncontrollable seizures. Though doctors do not fully understand how,

Brow Lift Surgery Alert – New Surgical Adhesive Approved
    2008-06-12 05:35:00
Surgical wounds and scars warrant a lot of care on part of the plastic surgeon and the patient and hence suturing the wounds properly is a very important part of the operation process. If the scars are in proximity to the visible parts of the face in any face surgery procedure, it becomes crucial that the sutures used to hold the wound are quickly dissolvable and less prominent. For an eyelid surgery procedure like brow lift or a browplasty, the scars are generally placed in the hairline of t

What to Do When Surgical Procedures Are Uncomfortable
    2008-04-30 21:27:29
Cardiovascular disease from cholesterol, impacted wisdom teeth and hemorrhoids, are but three conditions that can send you off to a surgeon, but if the surgeon isn't the right one for you, the results could be disasterous. A surgery going wrong has to be one of the worst medical nightmares most people will ever see. The bare possibility of this happening is enough to frighten anyone. Therefore it helps to understand precisely what is going on, and to understand exactly what your rights are in any given medical situation. Most surgical theaters in the world have a patient's bill of rights. Always check to see if any given hospital has a patient's bill of rights and, if they do, ask for a copy. If they don't have one, find a new hospital. As long as the hospital has this standard in place, they hold all of their doctors to it, so your surgeon will be bound by it. If, however, your surgeon operates out of an independent office, ask for the bill of rights directly from his or her office st

News Update – Evicel™ Approval For Surgical Sealant Use:
    2008-01-28 01:26:00
Blood, blood loss, blood clotting, etc. are accepted outcomes of any surgery. A surgeon can at best have everything at hand to minimize the loss of blood and mitigate any complications that may arise from the same. Cosmetic surgery, just like other forms of surgery also involves blood loss and clotting. To control blood clotting that results from an inability by the plastic surgeon to tamp the same through standard surgical means, the FDA has approved the sue of Evicel™, a fibrin sealant in liquid form. This protein sealant met with success when it was initially used for controlling clotting in various liver and vascular procedures. With its benefits widely realized and approved by the medical community, its use in general surgery including plastic surgery, is opportune. Evicel™ is available in frozen liquid form and requires hardly a minute of preparation after thawing. It is either sprayed or dripped on the blood vessels that are bleeding, immediately forming a layer

    Surgical operation Lasik for ?
    2007-11-27 10:39:00
LASIK surgery allows the complete cure of some regular eye conditions which many of us face. Many of us suffer from the problem of being unable to read things at a distance. Medically such a condition would be termed as myopia. The only option till recently was to wear glasses. The worse your eyes were, the thicker your glasses got. But those days are over now. You now have the option to rectify the condition and see things normally without the aid of glasses and contact lens. There are many who suffer from the problem of farsightedness of hyperopia. The problem is most visible in people who are around forty. Due to this condition a person would not be able to see what is close to his eyes. So reading from a book or a computer screen becomes very difficult if not impossible without the aid of reading glasses. At the same time since this condition generally happens pretty late in life it becomes kind of difficult for many to shift to reading glasses. In such cases LASIK proves to be the b

I have surgical eyes laser beam operation LASIK .
    2007-11-17 12:48:00
There are many reasons why you might want to consider LASIK laser eye surgery. To start with, it is a known truth that putting on glasses and contacts every day is troublesome. It is a pain to wake up and require to employ something so as to see the world better, and it is also a hassle to have to depend on something so as to see the world around us. Glasses and contacts can be costly, and it is often something that we misplace, lose track of, or simply forget to take with us. Wearing glasses and contacts also means that we are depending on something that can be broken or lost for our daily functioning. In addition, they cost money that some of us don't want to have to spend each year. Besides all these reasons, it is often in our best concern to fix something that is wrong with us, such as our eyesight. Some people get headaches and have other problems because they can't see properly, so getting laser eye surgery is a very good idea because it will give them much more freedom in the

    SURGICAL INSTRUMENTS
    2007-09-05 11:06:00
A surgical instrument is a specially designed tool or device for performing specific actions of carrying out desired effects during a surgery or operation, such as modifying biological tissue, or to provide access or viewing it. Over time, many different kinds of surgical instruments and tools have been invented. Some surgical instruments are designed for general use in surgery, while others are designed for a specific procedure or surgery. Accordingly, the nomenclature of surgical instruments follows certain patterns, such as a description of the action it performs (for example, scalpel, hemostat), the name of its inventor(s) (for example, the Kocher forceps), or a compound scientific name related to the kind of surgery (for example, atracheotome is a tool used to perform a tracheotomy). The expression surgical instrumentation is somewhat interchangeably used with surgical instruments, but its meaning in medical jargon is really the activity of providing assistance to a surgeon with the proper handling of surgical instruments during an operation, by a specialized professional, usually a nurse.CLASSIFICATION There are several classes of surgical instruments:Graspers, especially tweezers and forcepsClamps and occluders for blood vessels and other organsRetractors, used to spread open skin, ribs and other tissueDistractors, positioners and stereotactic devicesMechanical cutters (scalpels, lancets, drill bits, rasps, trocars, etc.)Dilators and specula, for access to narrow passages or incisionsSuction tips and tubes, for removal of bodily fluidsIrrigation and injection needles, tips and tubes, for introducing fluidTyndallers, to help "wedge" open damaged tissues in the brain.Powered devices, such as drills, dermatomesScopes and probes, including fiber optic endoscopes and tactile probesCarriers and appliers for optical, electronic and mechanical devicesUltrasound tissue disruptors, cryotomes and cutting laser guidesMeasurement devices, such as rulers and calipersAn impo

Another AL All Star Game Win......"Surgical Procedure" For Papi?
    2007-07-11 12:21:00
As in recent years, the AL continued their decade long mastery of the All Star Game with a 5-4 victory over the NL, assuring the AL team that makes it to the World Series the home team advantage. Papi and Manny went hitless and Mike Lowell contributed a single. The winning pitcher was none other than our very own Josh Beckett. Paps pitched a scoreless 8th and Oki Doke did not play. I'm sure he was honored to be there.....he sure looked happy! Baseball 2007 resumes tomorrow evening with a 4 game set against the always tough, at least for the last couple of years, Toronto Blue Jays.In other news, I came across an article in this morning's Globe that mentioned the possibility of surgery (gulp!) for Big Papi in the off-season. At first I was mortified, but after reading the piece, I feel much better. Here it is, in its entirety.........."Red Sox DH David Ortiz privately mentioned last weekend the possibility he might require a surgical procedure on his right knee, but because of the unce
