The Survival Guide for Horror Movie Characters
    2008-08-16 12:33:02
    • When it appears that you have killed the monster, *never* check to see if it's really dead. • If you find that your house is built upon or near a cemetery, was once a church that was used for black masses, had previous inhabitants who went mad or committed suicide or died in some horrible fashion, or had inhabitants who performed necrophilia or satanic practices in your house move away immediately. • Never read a book of demon summoning aloud, even as a joke. • Do not search the basement, especially if the power has just gone out. • If your children speak to you in Latin or any other language which they do not know, or if they speak to you using a voice which is other than their own, shoot them immediately. It will save you a lot of grief in the long run. NOTE: It will probably take several rounds to kill them, so be prepared. • When you have the benefit of numbers, *never* pair off or go it alone. • As a general rule, don't solve puzzles that open portals to Hell. •

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Extends Survival After Cardiac Arrest
    2008-07-26 22:41:00
(HealthDay News) -- High-dose hyperbaric oxygen therapy shows promise as a way to extend the window of opportunity to resuscitate a person whose heart has stopped during sudden cardiac arrest, a new study shows.Researchers at the School of Medicine at the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans report they used the technique to revive pigs up to 25 minutes after their hearts had stopped beating. In humans, if a patient's heart is not restarted through some means (CPR, medications or electric shock) within 16 minutes, 100 percent of patients die, according to American Heart Association statistics.Sudden cardiac arrest is the leading cause of death of Americans."To resuscitate any living organism after 25 minutes of heart stoppage at room temperature has never been reported and suggests that the time to successful resuscitation in humans may be extended beyond the stubborn figure of 16 minutes that has stood for 50 years," study leader Keith Van Meter, a clinical

Cancer Survival Depends on Where You Live
    2008-07-17 21:42:00
(HealthDay News) -- Your odds of surviving cancer depend on which country you live in. And, in the United States, it also depends on whether you're black or white, a new study finds.Economic differences among countries, access to health care, and the availability of cancer treatments feed the disparities in survival, the report said."There is a very wide global range in the odds of survival after a cancer diagnosis," said lead researcher Michel Coleman, a professor of epidemiology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in Great Britain. "Some of the range is understandable on the basis of the relative wealth of these countries," he added. The study also confirms the disparity in cancer survival among blacks and whites in the United States, Coleman said. "The differences are large across the U.S.A., and even in different metropolitan areas," he said.Coleman believes the differences among countries -- and within regions of countries -- is directly related to access to healt

Creativity and freedom breathes in the midst of yellow and green hues...South Delhi’s posh South Extension. Now that’s an address to envy. Travelling through the deadly Delhi traffic in sweltering heat we finally reached the office of Oxygen Communications, only to find the soothing yellow-green office in utter chaos. Oxygen Communications was shifting its office to a bigger premise in a prime location. Still the agency’s head honcho had taken out time to meet us. Now that’s what we call professionalism. In 2002, the agency started operatin on April Fool’s Day. But the agency did not believe in fooling around, and within a year bagged the prestigious account of Havell’s, which even after four years is still the shining star in Oxygen’s horizon. Speaking to 4Ps B&M, Tarun Das, Director, Integrated Ideas, Oxygen Communications, says, “Working for Havell’s, has been like a case study for us. Credit Card Survival Tips
    2008-06-27 11:16:59
With so many of us struggling to make ends meet as a result of the ongoing credit crunch, juggling the finances can be a frustrating process. Consumers are now subject to rising levels of debt on every aspect of everyday life. From the cost of food to rising petrol prices which have left some with no alternative than to cycle to work in order to save money. And yet, many of us are still relying on our credit cards to get us through everyday life. Payments can be spread over time, but it can be a risky business if you don’t keep track of your finances. Interest-free deals on balance transfers can be handy for when you want to consolidate debt, however if you’re unable to keep up the monthly repayments it could have disastrous effects on your credit rating. So what precautions can you take in order to ensure you’re not sinking further into debt? Try and pay more than the minimum amount each month in order to both reduce your debt and shave a little amount off the amou

Be careful when you do this. Do not stop until the full fart has been expelled. Walk an extra 30 feet to make sure the smell has left your pants.FLY BY: This is the act of scouting out a bathroom before pooping. Walk In and check for other poopers. Ted Kennedy's Brain Tumor - Median Survival is 15 Months
    2008-05-20 18:32:00
Doctors at Boston’s Massachusetts General Hospital described Senator Edward (Ted) Kennedy’s brain tumor as a malignant glioma in his left parietal lobe. The bad news is that the median survival period for patients with this aggressive type of brain tumor is only 15 months.Dr. Keith L. Black, the chairman of the department of neurosurgery at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, stated that "age is a very strong predictor of prognosis" with this type of tumor, which makes the outlook for Kennedy, who is 76, not as good as that of a younger patient.Dr. Black also stated that only about 8% of patients with this type of tumor are still alive two years after its diagnosis.Aggressive gliomas like Kennedy’s spread quite rapidly throughout the brain, cramping space inside the skull by taking up space and squeezing other brain tissue thereby impairing the brain tissue’s function. It can cause speech difficulties, an impairment in performing mathematics, and interference with hand

As nerves connect to target organs, they somehow compete with each other resulting in some living and some dying. Now, using a combination of computer modeling and molecular biology, neuroscientists at Johns Hopkins have discovered how the target tissue helps newly connected peripheral nerve cells strengthen their connections and kill neighboring nerves. read more

Survival Rates Of Breast Cancer At Different Stages
    2008-03-29 00:34:00
Where the disease has not metastasized, the five-year survival rate for women suffering from breast cancer is about 86%. That percentage means that 86% of women who develop breast cancer live for at least five years after diagnosis. The good news is that depending on the stage it is discovered, the survival rate can be even higher than the overall average. As with most cancers, breast cancer, develops in stages. A standard classification of letters and numbers is used to describe the stages - T, N and M and 0-IV. The alphabet T denotes the size of the tumor while alphabet N denotes that it has spread to the lymph nodes and the alphabet M means distant metastasis. When a primary tumor spreads to another area/s and forms more tumors, it has metastasized. When a tumor cannot be assessed, it is designated the classification of TX. Where there is no indication of cancer, T0 is used. If one of the following forms is suspected - DCIS (ductal carcinoma in situ), LCIS (lobular carcinoma in situ)

    Breast Cancer Survival Rate
    2008-03-19 06:05:00
When one talks of breast cancer and treatment, the secondary question is its survival rate. Survival rates give patients an idea of the extent of their cancer as well as the treatments that are available to them. We often hear of five-year survival rates for each stage of breast cancer, but what exactly is breast cancer survival rate?Breast cancer survival can be described in the following ways: - Period of time : 5 or 10 years, that a woman lives after diagnosis - Risk of reoccurrence - Risk of death when compared to others with the same illnessThe first is the more popular method. Since the survival rate is commonly categorized according to stages, some points about the stages of breast cancer first.Stage 0 cancer is the non-invasive type. Cancer cells remain within the walls of the place where they are discovered. For Stage I, the tumor is invasive and is about 2 centimeters long. Stage IIA cancer means that tumor is 2-5 centimeters. With Stage IIB cancer, the tumor may be less than

    Market Survival Guide
    2008-02-06 11:54:00
    1. Keep costs down In the new era of low returns, it's important to keep fees down to build a winning portfolio. Buy index funds and ETFs, and don't pay for Wall Street's often unreliable advice. 2. Go for dividends A big gift of today's rocky market is a surge in dividend yields. If you want income for life, grab solid but beaten-down names right now. Two good bets: pharma and utilities. 3. Take a chance on battered stocks Sure, it takes courage, but the best investors pounce when sectors are bloodied and expectations in the cellar. Two reviled sectors: banks and homebuilders. 4. Look abroad Diversification is the foundation of a strong portfolio. One way to get there is with a big allocation in international stocks. But true diversification is tricky. We'll tell you how to do it right. 5. Be smart about bonds You need fixed-income investments for ballast, but the trick is staying ahead of inflation. The three picks for an inflation-racked world: munis, TIPs, and CDs

Dry bamboo, termite’s nests or cotton balls dipped in Vaseline make excellent tinder while twigs, small leaves and dry bark will keep the fire going.SIGNALINGAlways bring your mobile phone — you never know where it will work. Don’t scream your lungs out — you’ll waste energy and your voice won’t travel far unless rescuers are within hearing distance. A whistle is a great piece of survival gear. If you need to start a signal fire, choose a clearing away from overhanging branches. Dig a trench or build an earth wall around the fire if it’s close to other trees or plants. Rubber tyres or green branches give a good, dense smoke. Spread out a reflective blanket (if you have one) to help searchers spot you from the air. Use a compact mirror, a knife blade, a thin foil or ready-made signal mirror with the sun to flash light signals.WATERThe average person can survive for three weeks without food, but only three days without water. Common symptoms of dehydration are dizziness, lethargy and disorientation. If you’re lucky, you may be close to a stream or river. Otherwise, collect rainwater, dig in the dry streambeds or look for rainwater in bamboo, hollow stumps or pitcher plants. Vines are a good source of water, bu

CHANGE AND BALANCE MEAN EVERYTHING The hardest part about change is when a time comes and a decision has to be made as to accept and absorb it or remain in your present state of expertise or stupidity. Dr. Deming said, “ No one has to change. Survival is optional.” With change comes a balance that must be measured and monitored to make sure too much or too little affects your being in a

    Survival Tips: Lessons in Misanthropy
    2007-09-18 06:34:35
    P. T. Barnum once said that no-one has gone bankrupt underestimating the intelligence of the American people. But, even if you are no fool, people will attempt to separate you from your money, time, or indulgences—deliberately or accidentally. The following tips may be an aid in our current civilization. 1. Trust no-one You may trust yourself, but others would hardly be wise to trust you. It works both ways, which is why you should not trust others. Even someone that prefers to behave trust-worthy is loyal primarily to himself, or at least to his perception of what he is, and you'll come second. 2. Do not assume that someone will do anything to help you, even if they offer to At best, they are attending their own agenda, but often they have malicious intentions and simply aim to harm you. There's no such thing as a free lunch, and anything that appears free has strings attached. 3. The more people know about you, the more they can use against you It would be self-destructive to p

    Credit-Card Survival Guide
    2007-09-05 03:42:00
    • Well, here's a simple one: Pay your balance in full. It's much easier said than done, but there's no question that you should, if you can. You don't want to pay interest on your purchases.• Don't be fooled by a teaser rate. These flirtatious rates are temporary. Credit-card companies try to dazzle consumers into applying for a credit card with offers of 0% APR, or annual percentage rate. Savvy consumers can take advantage of these rates, but just be sure you know how long they last, and what that pretty rate will morph into after it expires.

Massachusetts residential real estate has become a game of survival
    2007-07-11 00:38:00
"Agents who have gotten into the business (recently) have never seen anything like this market now," Rosseland said, noting there's been a 30 to 40 percent decrease in the number of agents versus two years ago in some places. Particularly hard hit, according to Rosseland, are newer agents. Peter Certo, manager at Keller Williams Realty in Worcester, said the median wage for agents is being held back by agents who fail to adapt to the current residential market or who aren't being pushed to produce. Instead, some of those agents find themselves competing with, or ignored by, independent brokers who are selling just to keep the office doors open, Certo said.

    Highlight HEALTH Summer Survival Guide
    2007-06-23 17:32:01
In the Northern hemisphere, summer officially starts on June 21. This day, also know as the summer solstice, has more daylight than any other day of the year because the sun reaches its greatest distance above the equator. Summer is a great time to get outdoors and be active. However, along with the fun and sun, there are a number of irritations that we have to content with. Highlight HEALTH looks at how to survive this summer - from sunburn to poison ivy. Sunburn Everyone knows the best way to prevent sunburn is to use sunscreen or sunblock, yet it’s the number one compliant of summer. Sunburn is caused by the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. When these rays pass through the skin, they penetrate melanocytes, the skin’s pigment cells. The melanocytes divide rapidly and increase production of melanin (meaning skin pigment), which makes your skin darker (1). The problem is, the sun’s UV rays also weaken elastin and collagen protein fibers that keep your skin smooth.

Lost Chances for Survival, Before and After Stroke
    2007-05-30 16:00:00
By GINA KOLATA , New York TimesDr. Diana Fite, a 53-year-old emergency medicine specialist in Houston, knew her blood pressure readings had been dangerously high for five years. But she convinced herself that those measurements, about 200 over 120, did not reflect her actual blood pressure. Anyway, she was too young to take medication. She would worry about her blood pressure when she got older.“I called 911, but nothing would come out of my mouth,” she said. Then she found that if she spoke very slowly, she could get out words. So, she recalled, “I said ‘stroke’ in this long, horrible voice.”Dr. Fite is one of an estimated 700,000 Americans who had a stroke last year, but one of the very few who ended up at a hospital with the equipment and expertise to accurately diagnose and treat it.Stroke is the third-leading cause of death in this country, behind heart disease and cancer, killing 150,000 Americans a year, leaving many more permanently disabled, and costing the nation
