Strong Arguments Against Socialism: Johan Norberg Talks About Sweden
    2008-08-13 17:08:19
Whenever I get into arguments with people on the Left regarding capitalism and free markets, I give them such a thrashing that they eventually get backed into a corner. When their weak arguments have nowhere else to turn, they attempt to change the subject by asserting that all capitalism's progress is going to cause global warming; then I know I have won the debate.Nevertheless, I often get into arguments with leftists who take a different route to avoid my jabs. They bring up Sweden and the Nordic countries arguing that those are examples of socialism working. I am still able to hold my ground by arguing that those countries still rely on capitalism to maintain their standard of living. I also assert that those countries rank quite high on the index of economic freedom, demonstrating that they are not as socialistic as one would think.Still, my depth of knowledge regarding the Nordic countries is limited to statistics, which might be enough to persuade some but not others.Therefo...

Breaking News: Johan Norberg and Boris Benulic Publicly Challenge Naomi Klein Supporters in Sweden
    2008-08-05 19:03:53
Naomi Klein’s, “The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism” is a bestselling book throughout the world arguing that tremendous violence was needed to implement Capitalism because the public never supported it. Moreover, Klein paints Milton Friedman as the behind the scenes villain who planned this dastardly scheme. Consequently, Klein has been hailed as the Left’s new savior even after collectivist ideas have been dispelled time and again.Sadly, the book is full of factual errors, distortions and falsifications, which together provide a completely false picture of what actually took place in the countries Klein discusses. Predictably, most of the world’s press gave the book uncritical reviews despite its lack of historical backing, and senseless libeling of Milton Friedman. Thankfully, Johan Norberg and Boris Benulic are challenging Naomi Klein and her critics in their new book, “Allt om Naomi Kleins Nakenchock,” (Rough Translation: All about Naomi Klein’s ...

Sweden Apparently Two Months Behind North America
    2008-06-18 13:36:58
via i.eurosport.se Last week a Swedish newspaper reported that the Colorado Avalanche had signed hockey agitator Per Ledin to a one-year, one-way contract.  But, six days later, no North American news outlet has confirmed this report, and there has been no mention whatsoever of Ledin in the Denver Post, the Rocky Mountain News, nor the official Avalanche site. Nothing.  Not a peep. Call me crazy, but I'm starting to think that Sweden's April Fool's Day falls on June 12th. Until I read or hear otherwise, I'm going to declare this report to be complete bunk.  As to how or why a news outlet would report something like this, I have no clue. Granted, I'm no expert on journalism standards in Europe, but this seems really strange.  I mean, we have entire cable news networks devoted to promoting false information, but you'd think those elitist Europeans---what with their universal health care and month-long vacations---would be above something like this... ...

BILL 2 Anti-Tank Guided Weapon, Sweden
    2008-02-22 22:04:00
The BILL 2 multi-mission guided weapon is a further development of the successful BILL I (RBS56), which has been in service with the Swedish Army since 1988, and is also in service with the Austrian and Brazilian Armies. BILL 2 is manufactured by Saab Bofors Dynamics, who are based in Karlskoga, Sweden. BILL 2 is also in service with the Swedish Army.Because of technological advances in fighting vehicle armour including ERA (explosive reactive armour), Bofors have improved the Overfly Top Attack (OTA) technology for BILL 2 and introduced a new double warhead. BILL 2 also incorporates improved guidance accuracy via the rate gyro, which monitors the gunner's tracking movements. The missile's primary role is to attack armoured targets at the weakest point, using the Overfly Top Attack trajectory. However, due to the three firing modes, it can also engage and destroy hovering helicopters, non-armoured targets and soft targets, such as machine gun nests. The portable missile system consists o...

Doesn't Remind Me (4:37)2. The leader of al Qaeda in Iraq recently offered a bounty encouraging the assassination of a Swedish cartoonist and his editor for having published drawings deemed insulting to the religion of Islam. Omar al Baghdadi, in an audio statement said Lars Vilks, who "dared insult the Prophet", should be killed for a reward of $100,000 and, if "slaughtered like a lamb", the killer will receive another $50,000. Tuesday, February 13th, 2007: Travel (to) Sweden: the Unofficial Guide to Helsingborg, Sweden - with yellow coats
    2007-02-13 11:07:00
What I think:Helsingborg is a beautiful city. So beautiful, in fact, that it's a great place to get away from once in a while - just to enjoy its splendour anew - all over again. Except in the winter. During the winter, doing the laundry is more fun than Helsingborg. Try doing your laundry in Helsingborg in the winter. Before you start thinking that I've started working for the Swedish Tourist Bored - I mean Board, I'm trying a little experiment, loosely based on an experiment by some Irish guy in Denmark. He's asked all his blogged-linked mates to link to him with "Irish in Denmark".I don't know what he hoped to achieve, but if you find that you're linked to here through some weird random links, please link back to me somehow, using the term: "Travel (to) Sweden with invisible Zimbabwean banana-flavoured underpants".My experiment is about trying to get the top Google search for "Zimbabwean banana-flavoured underpants" because we all know how common that is. So please, link now. T...

Monday, January 29th, 2007: Recycling: Sweden vs England
    2007-01-29 19:08:00
What I think:In December '05, I wrote a bit about recycling in Sweden. Now, after a recent visit to London, where I did some extensive research, I'd like to illustrate the differences in attitude between Sweden and England with regards to this most important topic. In Sweden:Most buildings have a sort of shed which houses large bins into which you dump your different recyclable materials. Above each of these bins is a helpful sign indicating what should go where. The photos that follow show the bins in my building's rubbish (US/CAN: garbage) shed.First up, we have the cardboard and printed paper bins: Papper is Swedish for paper, but in this context, it's mainly meant as packing material, which includes cardboard. This is where you put your empty cardboard beer crates that you bought on the ferry, your IKEA furniture boxes, and if you're really an eco-warrior, your empty Marlboro packs.Tidningar is the Swedish word covering both newspapers and magazines. But this bin applies for any...

Monday, October 16th, 2006: Instant sleaze with Sweden's new government!
    2006-10-16 16:40:00
What I think:The newly-elected Swedish government is off to a brilliant start. In the news today, the new Culture Minister, Cecilia Stegö Chilò, has resigned. The reasons: 1. She had hired nannies and paid them cash-in-hand (US/CAN: under the table), prior to her appointment as a minister. 2. She hadn't paid her TV licence for sixteen years. How cool is that? The Culture Minister, who is ultimately responsible for the Swedish television network for which the fee exists, hadn't paid it.She's actually the second to go for the same reasons.I love this country. Here's what she had to say, "By not paying my television licence fee and employing black market domestic help in the period before becoming minister, I have committed errors which are not acceptable, but which I have attempted to rectify as far as possible."And The Local (Sweden's news in English), had a fantastic scoop today; they certainly managed an amazingly impressive journalistic coup by getting this exclusive quote from ...
