| Flights Begin From China to Taiwan | | 2008-07-04 12:39:00 | | The first nonstop, cross-strait weekend flights from China landed in Taiwan on Friday morning, in the latest breakthrough in cross-strait relations that are rapidly warming under the island’s new president, Ma Ying-jeou.The first batch of flights was expected to carry 662 Chinese tourists on package tours from five cities on the mainland, but that number is expected to expand gradually to as many as 3,000 tourists per day. This is the first time that “ordinary” Chinese citizens will be allowed to visit Taiwan as tourists. | | Taiwan Real Estate Heats Up | | 2008-05-06 03:25:00 | | Markets in Taiwan, one of Asia's worst laggards as an investment destination in recent years, were livened up by the Nationalist Party's victory in the March 22 presidential election. On May 20, winner Ma Ying-jeou will be inaugurated, succeeding Chen Shui-bian of the Democratic Progressive Party.During Mr. Chen's eight-year tenure, Taiwan's benchmark stock index barely budged, even as Hong Kong's shot up 75% and Shanghai's doubled. Right after Mr. Ma's victory, Taiwan's index shot up nearly 10% above where it was shortly before the vote, but after some cooling it is now 4.6% higher than on election day.

| | Taiwan`s textile industry builds production base in Vietnam | | 2008-02-12 20:30:00 | | Vietnam has become an important production base for Taiwan's textile industry, with many Vietnam-bound investments seeing growth in output value and profits, an industry representative said Sunday. Many of Taiwan's textile enterprises that have invested in China have transferred their investments or moved their investment focus from China to Vietnam to diversify operational risk and reduce production costs due to operational difficulties stemming from China's increasing labor costs, the rising renminbi exchange rate, and the more and more strict environmental laws and regulations in China.Compared with China, Vietnam is attractive for investors because of its large population, abundant labor force, highly skilled workers, and relatively low labor costs. Its entry into the World Trade Organization last year has made the country a preferred investment destination for foreign investors. An executive of the Eclat Textile Co., a Taiwan-based fabric and garment manufacturer, said the company s | | By: Vietnam Business Finance News | | |

The gold medal would go to Hong King for business and pleasure; the silver to Singapore for law and order, and the bronze maybe to bangkok for chaos and charm. Taipei has always tended to be unfairly dismissed as the 'Ugly Duckling' - not least by its own citizens, who still refer to it as the "provisional capital". Certainly no one has ever thought to call it the 'Pearl of the Orient', anyway - not even in jest.Architecturally speaking, Taipei still suffers from the Bonn syndrome. It's a provisional capital whose shadow no one ever bothered to endow with substance. Unlike the German 'world village' on the Rhine, however, from 1978 the sprawling metropolis sitting in the broad basin formed by the Tamsui and Keelung rivers has sprung wildly upwards and outwards without a detectable overall plan, following the sudden lifting of the ban on skyscraper construction. Clogged by the myriad vehicles which symbolize its new prosperity, the road system has been struggling to catch up ever since. Recent attempts to improve the resultant ugliness are bearing fruit, however, as sparkling glass-and-steel facades dwarf the concrete drabness of the early boom years. The pioneering spirit is still in evidence, too. Taipei's go-ahead approach rests on a wide manufacturing base; not only the traditional textiles, but electronics and plastics are increasingly major foreign-exchange earners, with exports ranging from toys to luxury yachts. | | TAIWAN | | 2008-01-09 22:31:00 | | For a country whose existence even the United Nations reuses to acknowledge officially, Taiwan is doing extremely well - and showing it too. Within the space of a few years, the island off the China coast has transformed itself from an Asian Cinderella into one of the famous Four Tigers in a boom story which is one of the most remarkable legends of the postwar area. The architect of the scheme, the Republic of China's Taipei based government, continues marking time against the day when it can abandon its temporary asylum and once more take possession of what it sees as its mainland inheritance. To the People's Republic across the water in Beijing, however, Taiwan is just renegade province; and with both governments uncompromising on the "Two Chinas" issue and Beijing's sheer numbers outweighing the opposition, until a solution is found most of the world will carry on trading with a country it is obliged to ignore diplomatically.Cleft by fertile valleys and with its western territory a broad coastal plain, the rugged volcanic mountains clad with dense forests of camphor, cedar, rattan and oak are a treasure-trove of mineral resources and precious stones. Visitors venturing beyond the confines of the capital to ancient Tainan or the beaches of Taiwan, the "Terraced Bay", will understand why the Ilha Formosa, the "Beautiful Island" straddling the Tropic of Cancer exerted an almost magical attraction from earliest times on mainland adventurers and refugees, not to mention marauding pirates. Latest among the waves of arrivals were the nationalists of 'Generalissimo' Chiang Kai-shek, whose 'conservative revolutionary' framework for government, based on Dr Sun Yat-sen's Three Principles of the Peoples nationalism, democracy and economics at the heart of Taiwan's success.Within a couple of decades, a modern industrial society has been superimposed upon the traditional agrarian lifestyle.
