As the US-led NATO coalition in Afghanistan and the new government in Pakistan find themselves in policy disagreements and total disarray, with Hamid Karzai playing the spoiler, the resurgent Taliban appear to be preparing for the takeover of major cities on both sides of the border: Kandahar in Afghanistan and Peshawar in Pakistan. 2008-06-27 20:18:30
A report issued late Friday by the Pentagon under Congressional mandate and comments by Defense Secretary Gates indicate the fragility of the security situation in Afghanistan. The "Report on Progress toward Security and Stability in Afghanistan" is the first formal report ever issued by DoD on the status of the security situation there. "The Taliban regrouped after its fall from power and have coalesced into a resilient insurgency. It now poses a challenge to the Afghan Government’s authority...(read more)

Another Pakistan Deal with the Taliban Jihadists

Once again , the Pakistan government signs another deal with the Taliban, while counting on an impotent American government and an uninformed American public to continue to provide them billions of U.S. taxpayer dollars as our "ally". This is becoming an near-annual event in Taliban appeasement by the Pakistan government: the September 2006 North Waziristan Accord, the August 2007 calls by President Musharraf to "mainstream" the Taliban, and now a peace agreement with the Taliban in Swat. History is against any peace deals with the Taliban. At least three such initiatives (so called ‘peace deals’) had been signed with the Taliban in the past, only to be collapsed soon after. Pakistan: Peace Deal Between Islamabad, Pro-Taliban Militants Rankles U.S.
    2008-04-24 09:33:00
Rferl - Pakistan's new government is close to signing a peace accord with pro-Taliban militants as part of a softer counterterrorism policy from Islamabad that deemphasizes military strikes and calls for U.S. forces to show more restraint in the area.Britain has expressed reservations about the strategy, and Washington has said it wants Pakistani forces to continue fighting insurgents in the tribal regions near the border with Afghanistan.Under the proposed deal, pro-Taliban militants would order their fighters to stop using violence and stop sheltering or giving support to foreign Al-Qaeda fighters. In return, Pakistani government troops would be gradually withdrawn from the region. The orders to the militants were reportedly issued in pamphlets on April 23 by Baitullah Mehsud, the head of the country's umbrella militant group Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). The pamphlets say militants who violate Mehsud's directives "will be publicly punished."

The general was addressing an international terrorism conference in Ankara Monday, March 10. Sunday, the two parties in opposition to Musharraf forged a power-sharing alliance to govern Pakistan, vowing to evict him from the presidency. Pakistan's February 18 elections signaled a dramatic shift in Islamist parties' fortunes in the North-West Frontier Province. In the 2002 general election, religious parties won 67 seats in the 99-seat provincial assembly, while in 2008 they won only nine seats. Some commentators have attached great strategic significance to these results. The new taliban
    2007-12-29 14:00:00
There are as many as 10,000 Islamic schools in Karachi alone. Though the religious parties say they forbid political activities on their campuses, that's not what I found when I visited one such school in Sohrab Goth, a very poor area on the edge of Karachi. This is a vast, sprawling, dusty neighborhood, which came into existence in the early 1980s when refugees from the war in Afghanistan poured into camps set up by the Pakistani government. The camps are long gone. Now a mix of second generation Afghans and Pakistanis live here in concrete buildings. A traditionally conservative area, women seldom leave their homes unaccompanied by men, and the Afghan traditional blue burqa is the norm.In the 2002 elections, the religious parties made formidable gains -- for the first time in the country's history they took control of a quarter of the seats in parliament. Taliban 'hanged boy, 12, for spying for UK'

Taliban fighters hanged a 12-year-old boy from a mulberry tree, claiming he was passing information on Taliban roadside bomb attacks to police and British forces, Afghan police have said. The gruesome murder, which occurred in Sangin, an area held by British forces since driving out the Taliban in April, sparked outrage among politicians, who accused the al-Qaeda-linked militant group of atrocities against villagers. It was the second execution of a child attributed to the Taliban in three months."If this is true and the age is right it is an unforgettable crime," said Haji Mohammed Anwar Khan, the head of Helmand provincial council."If someone is a child their mind is not considered sufficiently mature to be held responsible under Sharia law. This is just a crime and we condemn it."Hamid Karzai, the Afghan president, also accused the Taliban of hanging a 15-year-old boy above a gas stove and lighting the flame beneath him, burning him alive, but it was unclear if he was referring to th

    Taliban Resurgent
    2007-11-26 01:25:28
From Reuters: Resurgent Taliban closing in on Kabul: report The conflict in Afghanistan has reached "crisis proportions," with the resurgent Taliban present in more than half the country and closing in on Kabul, a report said on Wednesday. If NATO, the lead force operating in Afghanistan, is to have any impact against the insurgency, troop numbers will have to be doubled to at least 80,000, the report said. "The Taliban has shown itself to be a truly resurgent force," the Senlis Council, an independent think-tank with a permanent presence in Afghanistan, wrote in a study entitled "Stumbling into Chaos: Afghanistan on the brink." "Its ability to establish a presence throughout the country is now proven beyond doubt," it said. "The insurgency now controls vast swaths of unchallenged territory including rural areas, some district centers, and important road arteries." Senlis said its research had established that the Taliban, driven out of Afghanistan by the U.S. invasion in late 2001, h

Al Qaeda and the Taliban's Pakistani insurgency
    2007-10-03 17:41:00
The Taliban are attacking President Pervez Musharraf's hold on political and military power in Pakistan. The Taliban is also working to weaken the resolve of the police, military, and civilians in the Northwest Frontier Province and beyond. The Taliban and al Qaeda have struck Pakistani military bases in Dargai, Kharian, Dera Ismail Khan, Hangu, and North and South Waziristan. Military convoys have been repeatedly hit by suicide attacks, improvised explosive devices, and ambushes throughout the Northwest Frontier Province. The Bannu suicide attack is the latest in series of Taliban suicide strikes at civilian, police, military, and governmental targets inside Pakistan. The tribal agencies have long been recognized as the nexus for al Qaeda and the Taliban's suicide campaigns in Pakistan, Afghanistan and beyond. The Pakistani Ministry of the Interior has repeatedly accused the powerful South Waziristan Taliban leaders Baituallah and Abdullah Mehsud of carrying out the suicide campaigns inside Pakistan. Over 80 percent of Afghanistan's suicide attackers "pass through recruitment, training facilities or safe houses in North or South Waziristan en route to their targets," a Taliban commander told the United Nations. The 2005 London Tubes attacks, the 2006 London Airline plot, numerous suicide attacks and bombings in India, and other plots have been traced back to the Waziristan agencies.

The newspaper said the Constitution of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, written in Pashto and Dari languages, says, “Every Afghan has the right to express his feelings through his views, writings or through other means in accordance with the law,” but also warns violators of Islamic thought “will be punished according to Sharia.”"The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan wishes good working relations with all the neighboring countries and specially those who have supported the Afghan nation during jihad," the document says. The Taliban is Alive and Well in Ohio
    2007-08-02 22:17:00
From Common DreamsWell, this is really weird. I, for one, believe that fathers should have some sort of say in whether a woman gets an abortion or not, even if it has no power beyond an idea logged in some karmic court. I mean, ideally everyone could just talk about the matter and sort things out... but we all know how well that works.Giving the father sole veto power seems just a touch patriarchal and as one-sided as allowing solely the mother to make the decision. But it is her body after all. And personally I'm tired of The Father being the head of household and supreme familial dictator (rarely benevolent). Maybe some form of arbitration (Anyone want that job?)? If a father wants to accept sole responsibility for the child's well-being and agrees to support the pregnant mother at least until birth if not until the child is finished nursing then why should the mother be allowed to make the decision by herself? Indeed, it is her body and don't get me wrong, I am 100% pro-choice, having experienced abortion from the male end of the proverbial stick no less than three times myself and grateful for it every time. But we talked about it, twice before, once after (that one felt a bit different)... it's just such a murky subject... Let whichever being you call God be the judge, I suppose.Who am I to tell any woman what to do with her body? But, then again, who are they to abort a life that doesn't just belong to them without first checking with the father of the unborn child? I'm fine with consensual abortions and abortions where the father is not present and thusly not asked. But when the father is present and wants the child and the women denies him that by aborting the child? Not so down... Thanks to Fern for pointing this one out. Damn. Makes me queasy too. I definitely don't think there should be legal repercussions involved. This stinks of a right-wing plot if you ask me. No one else can come up with such gaping plot holes.Wow. I just changed my own mind ni

    Taliban moving closer to Kabul
    2007-07-25 21:48:00
Recent kidnappings and other attacks indicate the Taliban insurgency in Afghanistan is moving closer to Kabul. The Christian Science Monitor reported the kidnapping of 23 South Korean aid workers occurred on one of Afghanistan's major highways between Kabul and Kandahar. The insurgency, which resumed in areas bordering Pakistan, is spreading inland. The South Koreans were abducted in Ghazni, which has no border with Pakistan. The Monitor quoted Joanna Nathan, a Kabul-based security analyst for the International Crisis Group, as saying, "Ghazni is important as the gateway to Kabul, and control of that road is very important, both symbolically and practically."Taleban says hostage talks in sensitive phase

Taliban Fighters Seize South Afghan Area

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan (AP) - Days of fierce fighting with NATO and Afghan forces left Taliban militants in control of one southern Afghan district and battling to take over another Tuesday, officials said. Taliban fighters seized Miya Nishin district in Kandahar province late Monday, provincial police chief Esmatullah Alizai said. Authorities were planning to retake the remote area. WTF?? Iran Caught Red-Handed Shipping Arms to Taliban
    2007-06-07 04:39:22
NATO officials say they have caught Iran red-handed, shipping heavy arms, C4 explosives and advanced roadside bombs to the Taliban for use against NATO forces, in what the officials say is a dramatic escalation of Iran's proxy war against the United States and Great Britain. "It is inconceivable that it is anyone other than the Iranian government that's doing it," said former White House counterterrorism official Richard Clarke, an ABC News consultant. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates stopped short earlier this week of blaming Iran, saying the U.S. did not have evidence "of the involvement of the Iranian government in support of the Taliban." But an analysis by a senior coalition official, obtained by the Blotter on ABCNews.com, concludes there is clear evidence of Iran's involvement. "This is part of a considered policy," says the analysis, "rather than the result of low-level corruption and weapons smuggling." moreWell that is confirmation of what we already suspected. The

Taliban uses weapons made in China, Iran
    2007-06-05 16:14:00
Sophisticated new weapons, including Chinese anti-aircraft missiles as well as items made in Iran, are reaching Taliban forces in Afghanistan, according to government officials and other sources. Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates said during a visit to Kabul yesterday that there was no evidence as yet that Tehran government officials are involved in shipping weapons to the country for use against U.S. and NATO forces. He did not comment on the appearance in the country of Chinese anti-aircraft weapons, evidence of which was provided to The Washington Times. A set of photographs was provided depicting Taliban insurgents showing off new supplies of Chinese-made HN-5 shoulder-fired missiles. The weapons, similar in design to Russian Strela-2 missiles and in use with China's People's Liberation Army since the early 1990s, are limited in range, speed and altitude, but effective against helicopters and low-flying airplanes. Taliban Military Leader Is Killed
    2007-05-15 06:53:27
From the WaPo:ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, May 13 -- Mullah Dadullah was the face of the Taliban movement in Afghanistan as it used suicide bombings, videotaped beheadings and targeted assassinations to escalate its insurgent campaign over the past two years.Dadullah periodically turned up on television to taunt the Afghan government and U.S.-led international forces with threats of ever more ambitious attacks. On Sunday, his face was on display again, resting on a pink sheet, bloody and lifeless. How to Torture a Taliban
    2007-04-29 18:35:00
Allegations of possible torture of Taliban prisoners over in Afghanistan continue to dominate the Canadian news scene, and as usual, the focus is more on the well-being of terrorists (who, given the chance, wouldn't hesitate to slit every Canadian's throat) than the possible valuable information obtained from them. When it comes to the scum called Taliban, I wouldn't care if every single one of them were tortured to within one inch of their meaningless little lives. That being said, here's the top ten ways to torture a Taliban:10. Endless hours of the CBC.09. New cellmate: Conrad Black.08. Make him use a toilet.07. Make him use a shower.06. Tell him ‘they ain’t virgins no more!’05. Rosie’s replacement on the View.04. Make him wear ‘Jesus Rules!’ t-shirt.03. Only reading material in cell: Gay porn.02. Always call him ‘Mary’.01. A nice, clean shave!

    IIPM-Press:- DIDN’T WE DEFEAT TALIBAN?
    2006-08-21 09:41:00
TALIBAN MIND-SET UNDEFEATED..The helplessness that marks the ‘eyes’ of the woman photographed twice in the span of 17 years by National Geographic remains the same even after the time lag. Aptly reflected in them is the unaltered position of women even in post-Taliban Afghanistan. They remain as humiliated as before, with their honour compromised and their socio-economic positioning fragmented. According to the UN and the Human Rights Watch, the attacks on girls’ schools have increased considerably post-Taliban, reducing the female student intake in secondary education to 5% in comparison to 20% of boys. The UN contends that about 300 schools educating girls were burned down post-Taliban. In another incident in May 2006, a female legislator, Malalai Joya, was attacked by her colleagues for ‘daring’ to participate in the male domain – Parliament! That Parliament, mind you, was formed after decimating Taliban! The Afghan Independent Human Rights Commission even contends that
