    2008-06-20 15:12:23
A few days ago I was at a very large grocery store waiting in the checkout lane. A customer in front of me was complaining loudly to the poor checker that she had recently bought a box of cookies (at that store) and she did “not enjoy” the taste but the store would not [...]...

Vasili's Tasting Notes For Wednesday's Tasting
    2008-04-21 18:35:00
Vasili was kind enough to provide some insight into the beers we'll be pouring on Wednesday, April 24th. The following was slightly edited for readability, but otherwise everything is straight from the horse's mouth.Redrum (7.2%abv, 25IBUs): This beer debuted at Portland’s Cheers To Belgian Beers 2008. Made with wort from the Jeremiah Red and fermented using the famed “La Chouffe” yeast strain. Nice and spicy with dark fruity flavors.Grand Cru 2008 (10%abv): A spiced tripel, modeled after our champion Belgian strong ale from 2002. This batch fermented faster than any beer I’ve ever brewed, but without the “higher alcohols” known for causing headaches.Enfant Terrible (~7.8%abv): This brew began life as the unblended base beer from our 2007 OBF entry which was racked into clean whiskey barrels and fermented with a lambic yeast/bacteria blend. It’s well attenuated and has become quite funky over the last year.IPA (~7%abv): I like to make drastically different IPA’s ev...

    Puglian equivalent to wine tasting
    2008-03-08 04:07:00
Surrounded by olive groves and vineyards, Kath Freer savours a taste of paradise in as-yet-undiscovered Puglia.Olive oil is considered as much a delicacy as fine wine here, as this region of Italy is one of the world’s biggest producers of both.As general manager of hotel Masseria Bosco, Stefano works with the De Padova family who have been olive oil producers for four generations. His tour of the 100-acre grounds includes a visit to the oil mill, where ancient traditions, such as shaking trees to free the olives, meet with the very latest machinery. ...

Bali coffee tasting at Seribatu village
    2007-09-23 12:13:17
Besides rice, Bali grows various kinds of plants ranging from flowers, spices, fruits, and coffee. If you tour to Mount Batur, you will pass a village called Seribatu village (ca 15 kms from Kintamani). The villagers here, instead of planting rice, plant coffee, chocolate, cloves, vanilla, jackfruit (not johnfruit), snake skinned fruit, durian, and pineapple. You can stop here briefly and have a...

With plans for a number of limited-edition 22-ounce brews each year, Hop Harvest Ale is just the first of a series of new and innovative, big brews from BridgePort. The Brewery will celebrate hop harvest, its new limited-edition 22-ounce brews and share a taste of its 2007 Hop Harvest Ale on Wednesday, September 26th from 7 p.m. - 9 p.m. at the BridgePort brewpub + bakery. With only 120 barrels of BridgePort's Hop Harvest Ale being made, beer enthusiasts and 'hop heads' won't want to procrastinate. Starting September 26th, BridgePort's Hop Harvest Ale can be found on tap at BridgePort brewpub + bakery and BridgePort Ale House and in 22-ounce bottles at finer grocery retailers in the Portland area.About Hop Harvest and BridgePort's Hop Harvest AleBridgePort's Hop Harvest Ale uses fresh green hops right off the vine, yielding incredible, fresh hop aromatics. Starting early in the morning, BridgePort's brewmaster, Karl Ockert, heads to the hop farm 30 miles south of Portland. Hops are cut from the fields, picked from the vines, and before the usual drying step occurs, green, wet hops are put into large 50-pound bags and taken back to the brewery. Upon arrival 300 pounds of green hops are added to a unique Hop Jack Tank that has already been brewing for several hours. As the hops steep, the Pearl District surrounding BridgePort Brewery is filled with intense hop aromas that result in a distinct brew unlike any normally hopped ale.The harvest for each variety of hops is limited and lasts only two to three days, making BridgePort's Hop Harvest Ale even more unique due to its special brewing process and limited availability.BridgePort's Hop Harvest Ale Stats:IBU's: 70 ABV: 7.0% Color: Deep GoldenIngredients: Pate, Wheat and Carmel Malts. Oregon Nugget, UK Golden, Centennial and freshly harvested Centennial Hops.Description: This triple hopped ale is a bottle conditioned Imperial Style Ale. The fresh green Centennial Hops add floral overtones reminiscent of tropical fruits. This makes me hoppy, I mean happy!...

Wine Tasting Wednesday June 6, 2007
    2007-06-06 00:22:00
Stop on by tomorrow and sample a range of fine wines from India. Yes, India. It's not a country traditionally associated with wine, but the huge land mass has an incredibly varied topography and micro-climates that mimic the best growing regions in the world. The wines we'll be sampling come from Grover Vineyards, a rather new vineyard with the knowledge and skill of master wine consultant Michel Rolland guiding them. Check the link to learn more about Mr. RollandI'm not entirely sure what the sales rep will bring, but I know they're bringing two different versions of a Cab-Shiraz blend from 2003. The harvest was split into two batches, one aged in oak barrels and the other in stainless steel tanks. If you've ever wondered what character is imparted by oak-aging vs. stainless-aging this is an excellent opportunity to sample the exact same "base wine" treated in two different ways. The tasting will be held in our BierCafe tomorrow night from 6 to 8pm and will be hosted by Rupe...

Midnight Sun Tasting @ the Horsebrass review
    2007-04-11 20:23:00
I was at the Horsebrass Pub for the first night of the Midnight Sun Brewing tasting. It was the night before Belmont Station partook in the festivities. From Thursday, April 5th, 2007The air at the Horsebrass was thick with enthusiasm and secondhand smoke. People were bustling with excitement to get their hands on and palate around the hardy offerings of Midnight Sun, an Anchorage, Alaska based microbrewery. Perhaps the most highly anticipated libation of the night was the Midnight Sun Conspiracy, brewed in conjunction with acclaimed former Pelican and now Hop Urban Brewery (H.U.B.)head brewer Ben Love. Centered in the row of tables on the pub's west side were an entourage of beer zealots clad in black, sporting the logo of Conspiracy--two pistols conjoined upward beneath the beer's name in a stylish red cursive font. Centered amongst these folks was Midnight Sun head brewer Gabe Fletcher. Fletcher, a tall and boisterous figure, I perceived from afar as mighty with an aura that...
