| Montezemolo named head of Formula One Teams Association | | 2008-08-06 04:59:00 | | When the Formula One teams met last week at the Ferrari factory in Maranello, they had yet to announce who would take over the helm of their newly-formed Formula One Teams Association. The group was formed to effectively negotiate on behalf of all the teams on a new commercial deal with Bernie Ecclestone's Formula One Management and on new regulations with the FIA. Reports now indicate that Luca di Montezemolo will act as the group's leader and spokesman. Now if you're thinking that Montezemolo isn't a team principal, you're right. In fact, he hasn't been actively responsible for the Scuderia in decades. The hereditary Marquis de Montezemolo is president of Ferrari and chairman of the entire Fiat Group, and recently finished his term as chairman of industrial association Confindustria. Certainly a heavy hitter, well above to pay-grade of Scuderia Ferrari chief Stefano Domenicali. The top-level appointment certainly lends a great deal of weight and credibility to the new association.[Sou | | By: Car News | | |

| F1 teams meet, form new association in Maranello | | 2008-08-01 11:57:00 | | In the highly competitive world of Formula One racing, the only thing teams can agree on is money -- they want more of it. To that end, they've set up the new Formula One Teams Association.Unlike the previous Formula One Constructors Association – which represented only the independent teams and came, somewhat ironically, to be dominated by Bernie Ecclestone and Max Mosley when they were team owners – the new group has the backing of all the teams (both independent and manufacturer-owned). The association was founded this week in a meeting of team representatives at Ferrari headquarters in Maranello, also including the participation of Formula One rights holders Bernie Ecclestone and Donald McKenzie. The Formula One Teams Association will represent the interests of the constructors (grand prix-speak for teams) in negotiating the final terms of the new Concorde Agreement, which determines profit sharing among the parties involved in the sport. Speaking with one voice, the teams sure | | By: Car News | | |

| Managers and overachieving or underachieving teams | | 2008-05-28 16:59:00 | | One thing that has bothered me for several years is how much of an impact some people think a manager can have on his team. Those who argue that it is probably only a couple wins or losses are at least being rational about it. Those who argue it’s 10 or 15 or even more can only be making it up as they go along. The obvious answer to how much a manager truly affects his team is that we simply don’t know. We never have and we probably never will.
There are far too many things that would have to be accounted for to reach a conclusion that this manager is worth this many wins. What we do know is that the players get paid big bucks to help their team win games. I can’t recall the exact value of a win, but it’s around $5 million, maybe more, and increases each season. General managers probably don’t use the same formulas we have, but each of them are aware of what one additional win is worth because it’s t | | By: Another Cubs Blog

| Better Know a Jaguars Coach: Special Teams Coordinator Joe DeCamillis | | 2008-05-22 13:00:25 | |
Although regularly overlooked by the common fan, special teams consistently has been a hallmark of quality football teams, and can literally make or break a game. DeCamillis has been nothing short of a godsend for the Jags. He started his career at Denver, and moved to coach special teams under his now father-in-law Dan Reeves in NY. Afterwards, he jumped to Atlanta where he presided over a special teams monster for the better part of a decade. This man can flat out coach, and he’s got a reputation for doing so.
So back to the special teams part. First, when I did a big feature a few years ago on coverage and return units, breaking down all the aspects of special teams that go overlooked, even I was overwhelmed at how much there was to know. And of the six or seven coordinators I talked to, the two who impressed me the most were Harbaugh and Joe DeCamillis, who is now with the Jaguars. Both guys sounded like head coaches. | Volvo Teams with Pet-Safety Site | | 2008-04-08 19:35:00 | | Volvo has teamed up with pet-friendly Web site BarkBuckleUP to promote in-car pet safety. Christina Selter, the founder of BarkBuckleUP, and Volvo hit the recent New York auto show armed with facts about the dangers of driving with unsecured pets. Most people buckle up in order to save lives, Selter says, but not much thought is given to traveling pets. “In fact, less then 2 percent of American pet parents actually utilize a pet restraint system. After an accident, first responders often have little time to access injured occupants and pets pose a unique set of problems we never thought about,” Selter said in a release. BarkBuckleUP says the possible injury to the pet is just the most obvious pet safety issue. Pets, like people, become projectiles in an accident; a larger dog in the car with you can transform into about 3,000 pounds of deadly force, enough to kill it and a human passenger. I have asked 100 percent to come up with a logo, and when it is done I will add it to the MHR Mock Draft database. I encourage you to create diaries at sites for other teams in order to get feedback from their fans. Even if you are the person "responsible" for a team's pick, get feedback. | The Value of Special Teams | | 2008-03-18 00:09:49 | | Many of Miami's offseason moves have been with the sole purpose of improving this team's special teams units. But what we haven't done yet is really look at just how important special teams are as well as talk about just how bad the Dolphins' special teams play was in 2007. So let's look at the value of good special teams play in terms of offensive production. Last season, the Dolphins were 29th in the NFL in kick return yards, averaging just 19.9 yards per kick return. On the other hand, Dolphins' opponents averaged 25.3 yards per kick return, which places the Dolphins 30th in the NFL. Now that looks bad, but it's hard to quantify just how bad. Consider this. The Football Outsiders tell us that the Dolphins average starting field position was at their own 27.67 yard line, which is the 2nd worst average starting field position in all of the NFL. The 2nd thing to consider is that the Dolphins were surprisingly effective in the red zone in 2007. They scored a touchdown on 51 | | By: The Phinsider

| Kenya in dilemma over transfer of Teams shares to private investors | | 2008-03-17 03:15:03 | | The Kenya government is in a dilemma over how to transfer billions of shillings’ worth of shares in the state-funded fibre-optic operator Teams Ltd to private companies when the multimillion-dollar cable comes into commercial operation in June next year. Teams Ltd is a government-owned special purpose vehicle created to develop a fibre-optic sea cable connecting the East African region through Mombasa to the world’s fibre-optic communications backbone via Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates. The shares of the company are to be sold to users of the cable when it commences commercial operation in July next year. The EastAfrican has learnt that the Ministry of Information and Communications (which, together with the Communications Commission of Kenya, is managing the project on the government’s behalf), has sought direction from the Treasury on whether to subject the sale of shares of the SPV to the new and lengthy but more transparent Privatisation Act, or to transfer the shares to | | By: Indonesia Type Approval/homologation/Compliance ce | | |

| The Wednesday Wrap: Gunners Grand In CL As English Teams March On | | 2008-03-04 23:47:00 | | Arsenal pulled off a huge coup at the San Siro yesterday, notching two late goals to oust AC Milan from the Champions League. Gunners were at a disadvantage going into the game, with the teams having played a scoreless first leg at Emirates. But Arsene Wenger's side outplayed their Italian opponents a fortnight ago and they did so again today. Cesc Fabregas and Emmanuel Adebayor (on a brilliant assist by Theo Walcott) scored for the visitors. It was a very strong effort by Gunners after a pair of subpar performances in the Premiership (ties with the Birmingham clubs on back-to-back weekends). As for Milan, the defending champs never really found their form this season after a disastrous start and this was the logical outcome. Yes, they won the Club World Championship, but does anybody outside Northern Italy and wherever it is that Berlusconi is holed up truly believe this is the best team in the world? Hard to fathom. | Financial Commitment to Top Picks Handcuffs Teams | | 2008-02-25 12:39:21 | | [editor's note, by Brian Galliford] MARVelous' latest diary takes a look at some comments made by Bill Polian in regards to the crippling effects of rookie salaries. Great work, Marv. End Note A story I saw today with quotes from Bill Polian, GM of the Colts (and formerly of the Bills), gives insight into a feeling I have had on the NFL draft since the late '90s and is now getting ridiculous. That is, that the financial commitment of top 10 picks, especially top 5, is so severe it makes it real difficult for struggling teams to turn their franchises around. Last year, JaMarcus Russell, received $29 million in guaranteed money - before he ever took a snap! Salaries Crippling Poor Teams Now, some will say, "MARVelous, why are you sitting there complaining about the salaries, because everyone in the NFL is making plenty of money?" Well, a team that drafts in the top 5 has enormous pressure in selecting a player that will pan out, and then gets the gift of giving him whatever h | | By: Buffalo Rumblings | | |

And the American League is the toughest. And we've got as good a chance as anybody to win it this year. It doesn't mean were going to, but we're certainly going to give it a try. | Teams Stalking Euros Instead Of Rentals As Trade Deadline Nears | | 2008-02-05 15:38:00 | | This hot piece of Euro tail is Fabian Brunnstrom. Who? I don't know who the hell he is, either, but he's apparently the second coming of Swedish Jesus (the first was Peter Forsberg). Brunnstrom is 23 and was never drafted, but he represents the NHL's alternative to throwing away draft picks and valuable utility players on under-performing rental players at the trade deadline. All a team has to do to get Brunnstrom is get him to sign a contract and get a passport. No more betting the farm (literally) on some off-and-on veteran with a bloated salary. F' you Marian Hossa. You can suck it.The Avalanche already pulled a stunt like this by signing Czech league stud Jaroslav Hlinka during the off-season. His six goals and 22 points in 50 games might seem pretty lousy, but at least Colorado didn't lose any draft picks acquiring the guy.Euro poaching.
