By SETH MYDANS : KANTHARALAK, Thailand — Hundreds of Thai and Cambodian soldiers faced off at the ruins of an ancient Hindu temple here for a sixth straight day on Sunday, in a modern-day echo of the age-old clash of empires across Indochina. The temple, perched high on a bluff on a disputed patch of border, [...]

Idaho Don and the Lost Crusader Temple Skull Meme: The End!
    2008-07-06 11:00:50
Our story so far: (Ohhh sooo far!) In pursuit of the origin of the 123 Meme, the Lewis and LOBO Expedition has plowed, disked, and harrowed their way through 35 blogs, leaving a trail of overturned topsoil and empty beer bottles in its wake.Identifying themselves as Chelle B at each of the blogs they plundered, our heroes, utilizing survival instincts normally associated with higher level organisms such as lichen, have managed to divert any potential retribution to someone who actually seems to enjoy being offended. After surviving the incredibly tedious 123 meme rapids, which would have stripped the readership of many a better humor blogger, ( Brent Diggs) Idaho Don and LOBO have arrived safely at a peaceful and calm lake. Or have they???As our story continues, LOBO reveals a terrifying truth:"...It's the Cat People!!""Cat People...Sure. Pass me up a beer...Thanks...Cat People, huh? You know LOBO, I've been facing forward for most of this trip. Exactly how many beers have you drank?"

The reason I made the torturous move to wake up at 4am to catch the direct bus to Amritsar was so I could see Sikhism’s holiest temple AND the India-Pakistan border ceremony in one day. Really, it was the latter event which captivated my curiosity, though once I saw the Golden Temple, I [...]

    Rue du Temple, Paris
    2008-07-02 09:30:13
Rue du Temple, Paris, originally uploaded by Rita Crane Photography.Red Lanterns on Rue du Temple!! One more reason to love Paris and France: a country that has accepted diverse cultures for centuries. How delightful to discover this scene as I was wandering around the Marais, on Chinese New Year 2007. I had come to Paris to photograph historic cafes for a series I am working on, and was crossing through the Marais looking for motifs. I wasn't expecting this: Ancient China meets Rue du Temple in Paris!! My dear, lovely, fascinating Paris.....you are full of surprises!

Raiders of the Lost Crusader Temple Skull Meme: New Lands!
    2008-06-29 01:47:47
Our story so far: Having consumed more beer than prudent, our hero, Idaho Don, has vowed to strike deep into the wild bloggosphere to hunt for the elusive origin of the 123 meme. (see here for part 1.)Accompanying him on the trek is his faithful humanoid companion, Crazy Wolf. Master of the low blow; cunning yet surly. Day 1. After carefully selecting the supplies for our mission and loading the boat, we got underway. We started in the familiar waters of The Squib. Evil Genius, and the man ultimately responsible for this blog series, so don't blame me.Amazingly, we quickly left the territorial waters of Grand Humor-Blogwick (Note to self: Must have Mark Rayner's true allegiance checked out)and passed through the extremely literate home of “Enter the Octopus”The day being pleasant, we decided to simply float for a time on the Information Super-River. A mistake, as it happens, as the rocking of the boat and the consumption of some of our supplies caused us both to fall asleep. We aw

Raiders of the Lost Crusader Temple Skull Meme
    2008-06-27 23:00:45
Today I begin an adventure. An adventure that I will be reporting on all this weekend. A grand, exciting, travelogue of strange and exotic locales populated by arcane and enigmatic peoples from all over the world. But first:Housework.I got another meme. This one is at least incredibly easy. It was given to me by Mark Rayner of the fabulously funny blog:The SqwibTo comply, all I need to do is pick up the nearest book and turn to the 123rd page and provide the fifth sentence here.Of course, nothing is that easy with me. I've got two books close at hand and I can't tell which is closer. So I'll do both, because lets face it, this isn't a lot of work.Book one: The Ford Tractor Model 8N Owners Manual:Page 123, sentence 5: "(1) Use a clean, well-banked forge fire, and heat 1/3 of the share point to a cherry red temperature."There, that was easy. And practical too.The other book is Diesel's incredibly hilarious book,Antisocial Commentary.Page 123, sentence 5: "Use a clean, well-banked forge f

Was the Taj Mahal a Vedic Temple?
    2008-04-21 22:41:10
The following is an interesting topic or rather controversy raised following the research done by Prof.P. N. Oak which provided evidences that Taj was a Hindu temple.V shall here post the contents of an e-mail explaining the same..."The Moghul Emperor Shah Jahan in the memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal built the Taj Mahal. It was built in 22 years (1631 to 1653) by 20,000 artisans brought to India from all over the world! . Many people believe Ustad Isa of Iran designed it." This is what your guide probably told you if you ever visited the Taj Mahal" but what about the following....No one has ever challenged it except Prof. P. N. Oak, who believes the whole world has been duped. In his book Taj Mahal: The True Story, Oak says the Taj Mahal is not Queen Mumtaz's tomb but an ancient Hindu temple palace of Lord Shiva (then known as Tejo Mahalaya). In the course of his research Oak discovered that the Shiva temple palace was usurped by Shah Jahan from then Maharaja of Jaipur, Jai Singh. In h

Box temple expands itself to encroach public land
    2008-04-08 09:25:00
There was a small projection to a compound wall in front of one of the houses wherein a Ganesha Idol was kept and few local people worshipping it. Quite a harmless thing. But I happened to notice recently that a small makeshift fence has been set up around this box temple, occupying public land.No wonder, if this box temple will expand itself to occupy 50% of the road in next 6-12 months. Building places of religious worship is an easy way to make money and occupy precious real estate. Due to sensitive nature of the issue politicians and administration often hesitate to take stern action.  Just keeping on record current scenario here, we’ll revisit this post after an year or so to see if the temple has occupied more space by expanding itself. Probably a bigger temple will be built around it with stories cooked up to highlight the historical significance of this place or how powerful this particular god is.Related post: Omkareshwara Temple, Madikeri * Ganesha Festival AftermathBrought

Impression from the 8th Annual Aikido Summit at the Denver Buddhist Temple in Denver, Colorado – March 22nd 2008
    2008-04-07 14:07:00
Edgar Johannsen Sensei's personality and drive is, perhaps, the only reason that the Colorado Aikido Summit has come to fruition once again. It is only because of Edgar's amiable, easy going disposition that he is able to successfully blend with all the diverse personalities in the Colorado Aikido community and bring us all together each year to share in our similarities and learn from our differences. The Aikido Summit is a great place for younger Aikido students to experience a wide array of Aikido styles once they have attained their black belt and created a foundation from which to build. It is also an opportunity for more veteran black belts to get refocused on their own training and decide what aspects to develop on in the coming year. Having attended several previous Colorado Aikido Summits, this year's was in many ways very much the same as years past. Therefore, it was my responsibility to be sure that I took away from it something new and different. The Aikido styles repres

    shinagawa temple torii gate
    2008-04-06 00:00:00
居然な品川鳥居 quiet little place near kitashinagawa station; this temple lies on one of the tokyo temple pilgrimage walking trails that roughly follow the line of the old edo highway (the old, old road connecting Edo (current Tokyo) with Kyoto). two nifty things i'd found out. first: Tokyo's kanji (Japanese representation) is: 東京(都). kyoto's kanji is 京都(府). a long time ago, someone told me that the reason tokyo's kanji and kyoto's look alike has to do with history-- with tokyo's becoming the capital of japan. you see, the kanji "東" means "east"-- so, with a little simplification, "tokyo city" roughly means "eastern kyoto". second, this gate structure marks the entrance to a shinto shrine; the shape is also quite symbolic. consider the kanji 天, which means "heaven"-- apparently, the shape of the torii gate is meant to be the same as that kanji; that is, when you pass through the tori

...now, adjacent the graveyard (previous day) lay another temple that i felt represented "modern japan" in many ways. in yesterday's post, i had to really consider the angle through which i was taking the shot, to avoid having the city of tokyo within the same frame. in this shot, however, i wanted to show the very reality of tokyo: everything is close together; all space is precious. behind this ancient temple is an apartment building still under construction; sometimes i wonder what the residents will think of living so close to the temple-- will they be able to smell the incense on the morning breeze? will they awaken with the sound of this bell being rung?

    2008-03-25 00:00:00
perhaps one of the first books that people read when they come to Japan (or when they're deciding whether to come!) is Dave Berry's commentary on this society. his observations are quite keen-- and i think that his book has one of the most amazing descriptions of how buildings are arranged in japan: that there is no arrangement per se. as a result, we can see unique pairings of structures-- and such isn't limited to tokyo, either: in Kamakura, across from gokurakuji temple lies another smaller temple, shown here. for some reason, this pair really typifies how kamakura feels: both ancient and new. photo location 35°18'34.11"N 139°31'45.23"E

He placed Prince Narissaranuwattiwong, the nation's chief architect, in change of the design and construction. The name Marble Temple derives from the phra ubosot , which is square and completely covered with white marble . In it is enshrined a reproduction of the Phra Buddhachinarat image, which King Rama V had copied from the original in Phitsanulok Province. [ Phra Buddhachinarat image ]In the cloister extending from the north, around the west, to the south of the phra ubosot , there are 52 Buddha images of various styles and periods. In the monastic residence area is a royal ordination hall, which was reconstructed there after having been moved from the Grand Palace. It was in this King Rama V lived when he entered the monkhood. Here’s a little secret: the United States government would rather Americans in search of adventure not travel abroad to join some other country’s army, to fight in wars to which we are not a party, or (worse) fight against U.S. soldiers where we are. Of course, there is a great romantic tradition of revered historical figures doing just that. Think of Ernest Hemingway, or George Orwell. Still, we now live in different times. Luxor East Bank, Amun Temple (Karnak temple)
    2007-12-19 09:21:00
The Amun temple of Karnak (on the eastern bank of the Nile, near the modern town of Luxor in Middle Egypt) is the largest ancient Egyptian temple that can still be visited today. Around 2.000 BC, this was the site of only a modest temple, but the next twenty centuries saw it enlarged and embellished without end. The last major extension came in the 4th century BC, when a new, massive entrance building was constructed: the 1 st pylon. This was incorporated into a mud-brick enclosure wall, 13 meters across at its base, over 20 meters high.1 It defined henceforward the perimeter of the Amun precinct, roughly 500 x 600 meters: an area of 30 hectares (75 acres). For orientating oneself in this huge complex, its ten monumental gateway buildings or pylons offer a convenient means of reference (see the plan on the next page). Their modern numbering however (from 1 st till 10th pylon) is derived from the order in which one would see them during a visit - as we will shortly. It d

    Luxor East Bank (Luxor Temple)
    2007-12-19 09:12:00
The temple complexes of Karnak and Luxor are a little less than two miles apart. The Temple of Luxor was built primarily by one pharaoh, Amenhotep, and is far more coherent than Karnak. King Tut helped complete it, and even Alexander the Great added to it 1000 years later. The temple was the residence of Amun’s consort Mut, and served as a sort of harem. The divine statue of Amun would be brought down from his temple to Luxor to symbolically father the king, and everyone would rejoice. The temple is beautiful, and the central court is spectacular at dusk, when the color of the stone turns to orange. The Luxor Museum houses many of the statues found in the area, protecting them from theft. The black granite statues from the reign of Amenhotep III, discovered in only 1989, are especially stunning. In the temple, I first stopped in the Great Court of Ramses II and looked to me left to find a mosque. This Mosque of Abu al-Haggag, built in the 14th century and dedicated to a local

    Nachiyar temple, Thirunaraiyur
    2007-12-18 01:33:00
About the temple and specialitiesLord Naraiyur nambi and nachiyar thayar preside here in a wedding posture. Special importance is given to thayar in this temple and always the first privilege to given to nachiyar. The prasadam is also first offered to the goddess only and nachiyar leads the procession in hamsa vahanam. There is a statue of garuda here in a separate sannadhi. During Garuda sevai, the number of people required to carry garuda through each of the five prakarams of the temple keeps doubling from 4 to 128 people. Again while coming inside the temple, the weight keeps decreasing and the number of persons carrying keeps reducing by half to final 4 who carry it into the sannadhi. Worshipping Kal Garuda is said to free devotees from naga dosha and bless childless couples. It is the only temple among the 108 divyadesams of srivaishnavas where God Naraiyur nambi has the conch and charka in front of his face. Also, only in this temple, there are idols of the presiding deities of the 108 divyadesams of Srivaishnavas.Another specialty of the temple is only in this divyadesam, there is brahma in standing posture inside the temple. How to reachThe nearest town is Kumbakonam, 10 kms away. temple and cat
    2007-12-09 23:00:00
i saw this cat and just had to take a photo;he seemed more of a temple guardian of sorts than a mere kitty, really. it's weird. i suppose that many people must have a particular idea in mind when they take a photo; everyone asks me what kinds of photos i take. and, although i have been asked this question dozens of ties, i never know how to answer it. most recently, when one of my coworkers asked that question, i pondered for a moment and said: "time." i am still unsure why i chose that particular word, but: i guess that's what i enjoy photographing most-- those small fleeting moments in time when something happens; something about the situation captures your heart or mind. i hope to be reviewing my photo database over the new year break-- i have been thinking of compiling a "temple animals" section or something similar; still don't know.

    path and temple
