| | Holiday Weight Loss - Thanksgiving and Christmas Don’t Have To Ruin Your New Year | | 2008-06-11 18:36:47 | | For many people, trying to diet during the holidays is like trying to find the perfect Christmas gift for Aunt Edna: almost impossible. No diet pill or weight loss program can overcome the irresistible draw of fudge, eggnog and candy canes. So what’s a weight watcher to do? Is there any hope for holiday weight loss, or are we destined to add some more pounds before the inevitable New Years resolution?Conventional wisdom is that most people gain from five to ten pounds of fat during the holidays. Happily, that much at least appears to be false. However, Americans do tend to gain some weight during this time of year: “Previous studies suggested that Americans gain an average of 0.4 to 1.8 pounds each year during their adult lives” (source: nichd.nih.gov). What’s alarming is that although we’re putting on fewer pounds during the holidays than we had previously thought we’re not taking that extra weight back off.“Researchers now say they have some good news for us -- and some... | | By: tips n trick diets success | | |

| | Thanksgiving... Then and Now | | 2007-11-25 21:48:00 | | This year, our family has a lot to be thankful for. For the first time in three years, we were able to spend Thanksgiving at home with family - instead of in NYC for one of Jacqui's surgeries. While we are extremely grateful for Jacqui's amazing surgeon in New York, we are even more grateful to not be in the Big Apple this year. | | President Lincoln's Thanksgiving Day Proclamation | | 2007-11-25 00:58:51 | | "The year that is drawing toward its close has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften the heart which is habitually insensible to the everwatchful providence of almighty God.In the midst of a civil war of unequaled magnitude and severity, which has sometimes seemed to foreign states to invite and provoke their aggressions, peace has been preserved with all nations, order has been maintained, the laws have been respected and obeyed, and harmony has prevailed everywhere, except in the theater of military conflict; while that theater has been greatly contracted by the advancing armies and navies of the Union.Needful diversions of wealth and of strength from the fields of peaceful industry to the national defense have not arrested the plow, ... | | By: Inspirations and Creative Thoughts | | |

| | | | Roasted Pumpkin and Onion Bisque (Soup) - Thanksgiving Appetizer! | | 2007-11-22 13:43:43 | | As we drift into longer and more chillier nights, and await the first snow, our tongues and minds crave for something hot, comforting and tantalizing. And with Thanksgiving round the corner, we are also looking for recipes that would fit the occasion. And this is one time of the year when you cannot ignore pumpkins, which are mainly cultivated in western hemisphere, and are commonly found in North America, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and India. Honestly, I haven't been a great fan of using this in my recipes, maybe because I haven't developed the taste for it. But 3 days ago I tried the pumpkin soup at my cafe and the flavor struck a chord. It was creamy, rich, a bit of sweet with a touch of onions and savored with italian herbs. And the mere look of the bisque was inviting and soothing at the same time. So I thought I have to share this with my other readers who might have shied away from pumpkin recipes just like me and would never realize how wonderful this recipe could be! | | Happy Thanksgiving from Buffalo Rumblings! | | 2007-11-22 07:15:03 | | Turkey is so cliche. Plus, I just like pie better. Mmm... Turkey Day. What more can any football-loving American citizen ask for? Tons of delicious food, a couch (or other comfortable piece of furniture), and a mix of good football to watch (Packers at Lions) and boring football to sleep to (Jets at Cowboys, Colts at Falcons). It's one of America's great traditions, and I fully plan on indulging in it today - and so should you. Therefore, we'll put the Bills bashing on hold and enjoy this national holiday before getting back to business early tomorrow morning. A few "thanks" I'd like to pass out - first, to the brave men and women fighting for my right to pass out at the dinner table today, thank you. Second, to the Detroit Lions, for finally making the early Turkey Day game worth watching. Third, to our Buffalo Bills, for still being in the hunt at this juncture of the season; and fourth, to you all for taking the time each day to stop by Buffalo Rumblings. | | Happy Thanksgiving 2007 | | 2007-11-22 06:37:09 | | Today, Thanksgiving in America, Nov. 22, 2007, I begin my 31st year of sobriety. The best decision I ever made was to quit drinking. From that decision, I was able a few months later to open my heart up and allow God to take dominion in my soul. For 31 years, since 1976, each day I have tried to discern His will for my life. I am going to repost "The Moment That Changed My Life." My hopes and prayers go out to those families and souls that continue to struggle with substance abuse. The easy way is to quit--the hard way is to continue using and abusing. God bless everyone. Each life has defining moments. The moment that changed my life happened in a home for alcoholic women in 1976. I was in a discussion with Lois, another alcoholic from Brooklyn, and she was talking about her life. Midway through her talk, I felt intense warmth toward her and compassion flowed through me. The miracle was that I had had a very sheltered life and she had had a very tough life, but in that moment we were... | | By: Changemaker: Healing Mind, Body and Soul | | |

Jason Kendall in a Brewers' uniform.
From the Trib:
Catcher Jason Kendall and the Milwaukee Brewers reached a preliminary agreement Wednesday on a one-year contract.
The deal, which includes a 2009 option that could become guaranteed, is subject to Kendall passing a physical. Milwaukee made the move one day after trading catcher Johnny Estrada, to the New York Mets for reliever Guillermo Mota.
Kendall hit .270 with 19 RBIs in 57 games with the Cubs after a midseason trade from Oakland. Prior to the trade, Kendall batted .226 with 33 RBIs for the Athletics.
Estrada, who was acquired in a trade with Arizona last offseason, hit .278 with 10 homers and 54 RBIs for Milwaukee last season but was considered a defensive liability.

| | | Thanksgiving Dinner | | 2007-11-20 23:00:59 | | If you’re cooking Thanksgiving dinner, remember the three things I talked about last weekend that are easy to forget: 1. Remove the turkey from the freezer several days before Thanksgiving. If you’ve forgotten til now, well, take it out now. It’s the best you can do. 2. Remove the extra oven rack before you heat the oven. 3. Hell, I forgot the third thing. What was it? Oh well, I hope you have a great dinner anyway. If you are just playing guest and plan to veg out watching the game after dinner, you don’t need my advice. Just remember that the holiday is a great time to count your blessings. | | It will be thanksgiving | | 2007-11-19 02:14:37 | | It will be thanksgiving, and my husband is thinking about camping outside a store where he plans to grab a computer for less. Well, I am not really sure if he can manage. Imagine he has to spend the whole night there for that, ewh! That is too cold for me, and I wouldn't do it...LOL. He might just do that if he is desperate enough...LOL. Anyway, I will surely be busy cleaning the house, and cooking our Thanksgiving Dinner. We will have turkey, yes, we always have turkey each Thanksgiving. That is the norm in America, everyone has got to have a turkey for Thanksgiving. I cook out baked in the oven for a few hours or so. I wish I can deep fried ours for a crispy skin that I would much rather have...yummy! My husband won't let me because I could burn the house down he said, too dangerous, and most people do it outside in the open far from any combustible materials or flammable things. | | Thanksgiving Wine and Chateau Ste. Michelle Gewurztraminer | | 2007-11-17 14:37:00 | | 2006Columbia ValleyWashington StateWill drink again.See Thanksgiving wine discussion below. This was the first time I tried Gewurztraminer. I didn't really care for it the first night I had it. It was reminiscent of cider at first, then some citrus flavor came through in a light finish. But I really enjoyed it more last night with dinner. I had it alone and with dinner (I can't remember what I made but I think it was chicken of some sort) the first night and wasn't that impressed with it. At that point I decided I'd probably not purchase it again. But accompanying last night's dinner it was a different story. I noticed more fruit and less bite - pear with a little nutmeg or similar spice. I sauteed shrimp in sesame oil with garlic and put that over brown rice. I had a cesaer salad (with garlic croutons) and a pumpkin muffin that I'd made the day before. It was SO good with dinner, especially following the pumpkin muffin, leading me to believe that this might be a good Thanksgiving wine with the sweetness of many traditional recipes served (in our house it's parsnips and carrots, sweet potatoes, acorn squash, cranberry sauce, etc.). I think a much drier wine would be completely drowned out by all the sweetness.Speaking of Thanksgiving: What to drink? Thanksgiving is the biggest wine drinking day of the year. Researching this very subject I found the more popular wines served are Beaujolais Noveau for red and Reisling for white. The biggest reason for this combo is the typical diversity of the meal itself. So many different dishes are served in various households. But a large part of the meal is associated with the sweeter tasting foods. Reisling goes well with sweeter dishes, as well as salty - and Thanksgiving dinner also tends to have a lot of natural saltiness. Beaujolais is a lighter red and therefore better accompanies many of the lighter dishes served (mashed potatoes, turkey, and stuffing though heavy weightwise, are on the lighter side of flavor intensit... | | By: What To Drink Tonight | | |
| | How Many Pesticides Make it to Your Thanksgiving Table? | | 2007-11-16 19:02:00 | | Thanksgiving is my all time favorite holiday, and not just because it's a day of fabulous food, friends and family, but it's a great time for reflection. This year in particular, I will be giving thanks for my new found commitment to green living. After years of living blindly to the dangers that lurk in our food, our homes and the Earth, I finally realize that it is so important to the health of our families. Duh. I guess better late than never. This year, we will be hosting the 1st Annual All Natural Organic Thanksgiving! Here are a few ideas for you to keep it chem-free.Step 1: Order an Organic Bird. This can be done at a quality butcher shop, or even a local farm. If you want a really good one, based on a test of 9 turkeys conducted for the New York Times, buy an Eberley (also labeled D'Artagnan) certified organic or an Eberley (D'Artagnan) natural, which is similar except it's not fed organic grain. In taste tests, these turkeys ranked #1 and #2 hands down respectively vs. the other 7, which included a Butterball, a Bell and Evans, a kosher turkey and several wild birds. To order one, call 800-327-8246 and they will ship it right to you. It costs more than store bought, but this is one day to splurge. Or try IGourmet.com; they also offer organic turkeys.Did you know the world famous Butterball brand is injected with the following: vegetable oil, water, salt, emulsifiers (mono- and diglycerides), sodium phosphate, annato color and artificial flavor. Is this supposed to be Thanksgiving or a high school chemistry experiment??Not that I'm Giada de Laurentiis or anything, but I do highly recommend brining the bird the night before in a salt water mixture. This helps the turkey retain its moisture and tenderness. You can find many recipes using this technique at www.epicurious.com.STEP 2: Organic Bread Stuffing. This is an easy one. Buy a few loaves of organic wheat bread ( or mixed varieties) and let them go stale. Not rock hard, just day old. Then cut off the ... | | By: I Dream of Greenie | | |

| | How to prepare turkey menu before Thanksgiving dinner | | 2007-11-14 11:02:00 | | Early November
Choose a menu (we have four great ones to suggest).
If you're ordering a fresh turkey, do it now; if you're buying a frozen turkey, you still have time, but don't wait until the last minute. Remember: It's best to allow four to five days for it to thaw. (For advice on buying, defrosting, and cooking your turkey, see How Big a Bird, and Other Turkey Tips.)
Floral centerpieces finish off a well-set table. Florists are busy this time of year, so order flowers now. Four Days Before Thanksgiving
Start defrosting the frozen turkey in the back of the refrigerator, where it is coldest.
Compose a shopping list, and purchase all non-perishables. Wait until the day before Thanksgiving to buy salad greens, fresh bread, or seafood.
If you're baking pies for dessert, make the dough for the crust, roll it out, lay it into pie plates, and freeze.
Two Days Before Thanksgiving
Prepare the serving pieces, plates, flatware, glasses, etc.
If you're using cloth napkins or tablecloths, iron them now.
Make the cranberry sauce (try our Cranberry Orange Relish); a couple of days in the refrigerator will give the flavors time to develop.
Homemade stuffing often calls for stale bread; cut and cube the bread now, and set the cubes out in a single layer on a baking sheet. One Day Before Thanksgiving
Pick up the fresh turkey from the market.
Prepare the stuffing (try our Classic Stuffing), but leave out any raw eggs until you stuff the bird.
Make the Giblet Stock for the gravy.
Defrost pie dough; assemble and bake pies.
Peel the potatoes, then refrigerate them in a pot of cold water.
Make the vegetables and other side dishes that require baking, such as casseroles, and reheat them tomorrow; or assemble them today, and cook them right before dinner.
Set the table tonight or first thing in the morning.

Traditional celebrationIn the United States, Thanksgiving is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November which usually marks a pause in school and college calendars. Families and friends gather for a reunion, a day of thanks, and a festive meal.Thanksgiving meals are traditionally family events where certain kinds of food are served. First and foremost, turkey is the featured item in most Thanksgiving feasts (so much so that Thanksgiving is sometimes facetiously referred to as "Turkey Day"). Stuffing, mashed potatoes with gravy, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, corn, turnips, yams and pumpkin pie are commonly associated with Thanksgiving dinner. Often guests bring food items or help with cooking in the kitchen as part of a happy, communal meal.In keeping with the holiday theme of giving thanks, during the socializing or meal, people talk about what they are thankful for or tell about experiences during the past year which have caused them to feel grateful.Thanksgiving dinnerThe centerpiece of contemporary Thanksgiving in the United States is a large meal, centered around a large roasted turkey. The majority of the dishes in the traditional American version of Thanksgiving Dinner are made from foods native to the New World, according to tradition the Pilgrims received these foods from the American Indians. | | 5 Tips on Picking Thanksgiving Wines | | 2007-10-18 06:33:00 | | I received this in my email in September from Natalie Maclean and it might be a bit early for this article. Of course, your own homemade wine always goes best with whatever your eating.Five Quick Tips for Picking the Ultimate Thanksgiving WineAuthor/Sommelier Natalie MacLean suggests gobbling good wines at www.NatalieMacLean.comNew York (September 13, 2007) - "No other holiday celebrates the giftof wine like Thanksgiving," says Natalie MacLean, author of thebestselling book Red, White and Drunk All Over: A Wine-Soaked Journeyfrom Grape to Glass. "Wine is a taste of the harvest along with all thedelicious dishes on the table. But actually choosing a bottle can feellike a thankless task, especially with so many flavors to match."Relax. Have a drink. And try some of Natalie's suggestions for greatwines to pair with Thanksgiving turkey and all the trimmings. In Red,White and Drunk All Over, which will be published in paperback nextmonth, Natalie discusses wine and food pairing for Thanksgiving dinner.A new chapter in the book also addresses the five toughest matches forwine: vegetables, spicy dishes, chocolate, cheese, and fast food.Natalie's free online matching tool at www.nataliemaclean.com/matcherNatalie also offers five quick tips for choosing a terrific Thanksgiving wine:1. Start with bubbly. Sparkling wine is a great aperitif to sip whileyou wait for the turkey to finish cooking. It adds a celebratory noteto the meal and goes well with starters like soup and salad.2. Consider the turkey. Unlike most poultry and game birds, turkey meatis very dry in texture. So you need a mouth-watering wine to complementit. Good options are crisp whites like riesling and pinot grigio. Andyes you can drink red wine with white meat: pinot noir, beaujolais andzinfandel all have juicy, berry-ripe flavors that go well with turkey.3. Look beyond the bird. The range of side dishes means that you don'thave to match your wine just to the turkey. Since Thanksgiving dinneris often a ban... | | By: Making Homemade Wine and Beer | | |
