Frustration Mounts As Tigers Topple Rangers Again, 11-3
    2008-08-20 04:08:06
A discouraging callback to last Friday morning’s column: It’s simply unfathomable just how many injuries have befallen the big league squad, both on the pitching side and the hitting side, and just plain depressing to look at the final 40 games on the Rangers’ schedule and realize just how difficult it’s going to be for this [...]

When you have walked among the wildlife, birds, reptiles and raptors in the nature-like environment at the Denver Zoo. For many urban families and children it may be the closest they get to an experience in the natural outdoors. But it is a worthy substitute that should not be missed. The Denver Zoo is not just a zoo. It is an environment that transports you from the metro urban population to a sitting that makes you feel you are truly in the outdoors, in the habitat of the wildlife you are witnessing. The zoo is an educational classroom. It is a place to visit, a place teens and adults can volunteer. When you are there it absorbs you into the sense you are moving from the plains of South Africa to the rainforests of the Amazon to the world’s deserts, the rivers and lakes around the globe and the tundra and frozen artic circle. The realism of the animal and bird environments cast you into a kind of outdoors reality show. One forgets you are in the midst of a metropolitan city. One of th

World Bank to Save the Tigers?
    2008-06-11 06:55:53
Isn't this a bit outside of their mission? From Reuters UK:A World Bank report warned that "if current trends persist, tigers are likely to be the first species of large predator to vanish in historic times." "Just as with many other challenges of sustainability, such as climate change, pandemic disease, or poverty, the crisis facing tigers overwhelms local capabilities and it is one that transcends local borders," Zoellick said. "This is a problem that cannot be handled by individual nations alone, it requires an alliance of strong local commitment backed by deep international support," he added. Zoellick said the World Bank would convene a series of discussions with countries, conservationists and the private sector to mobilize funding for tiger conservation, and launch studies on how better to protect the cats. The World Bank chief said there were examples of where tigers had been brought back from the brink of extinction, such as in Russia and Nepal, but adde

First Top Gear Series 11 commercial: Tigers racing Badgers
    2008-06-11 06:14:00
They really are dragging out the introduction of the 11th season of Top Gear, and we don't mean in the tire smoking way, either. But a commercial like this one after the jump helps to pass the time. There is nothing we could say that could best the BBC trio in this first ad for the telly. As for the second commercial, well, you can't win them all. But tigers racing badgers more than makes up for it, so follow the jump to check them out. Comerica The Beautiful...Red Sox 5 Tigers 1
    2008-05-09 04:12:00
With its smaller than ever outfield dimensions, Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan must be one of Kevin Youkilis' favorite places to play baseball. He hit his fourth home run of the four game set Thursday night to back the solid seven innings of pitching from Josh Beckett. Beckett made some sort of correction in his pitching motion, and it seemed to work - he walked no one. He had this to say...“There’s somebody back home,” said Beckett, “who has been watching me since I was 14 years old and knows me better than anybody. They were the one who saw something. “I’m just trying to get to where I need to be,” he said.Peter here, and he was where WE need him to be last night. He was flat out brilliant, going seven strong and giving up a lone run on six hits. He walked nobody and threw 102 pitches. Craig Hansen followed with a clean eighth inning and Manny Delcarmen surrendered one hit in an eleven pitch ninth. If Hansen can give us a clean inning often, just ONE inning, mind yo

    COMEBACK WASTED...Tigers 10 Red Sox 9
    2008-05-08 04:17:00
You can't win 'em all, but last night's 10-9 loss to the Detroit Tigers really hurt. The Tigers had lost five games in a row and Boston had WON five straight. But when the Red Sox finally went ahead by a score of 9-8 going into the bottom of the ninth, an improbable Boston comeback veered into the realm of a probable victory. But it was not to be, for the Tigers, on the strength (??) of a checked-swing roller, a costly error by Julio Lugo, a sacrifice bunt that traveled no more than three yards and a shattered bat bloop single, scored two vital runs to get the victory. I could go into who hit what when, but you can click on the title of this post for all those details. The Boston comeback was thrwarted by the two unearned ninth inning runs. Oh well, turn the page. It's all we can do, so let's do it! I already have, late last night. Sleep was a tossed and turning trip of dreamlike states. It was a bad night for Clay Buchholz, who went four innings and gave up five runs on ten hits. Julia

    Detroit Knuckles Under...Red Sox 5 Tigers 0
    2008-05-07 04:21:00
When Tim Wakefield pitches the way he did on Tuesday night in the Motor City, it's a thing of beauty and so much fun to watch. He kept pounding the strike zone, walking NOBODY, and threw 98 pitches in his eight full innings of work. Mike Timlin mopped up in the ninth and was just fine. Wakes made a mechanical adjustment with his feet before the game and mixed in many more fastballs. The mix change was suggested by heavy hitting personal catcher Kevin Cash, who has been a tremendous surprise at the plate. Here's what Wakefield and his catcher had to say after the game...“I switched my mechanics from the last two starts, where my knuckleball was good I was kind of all over the place,” he said. “I got more in line with my stride toward the plate. I’m kind of open a little bit so my arm can come down toward the plate, but I think I was too open. I just felt like I was all over the place, looking at the tapes and looking at the feet marks, where they were pointing the wrong way.”W

Red Sox Beat Tigers DESPITE Their Bullpen
    2008-04-11 04:30:00
It was a night of thrills and chills, some of them unwanted ones, Thursday at Fenway Park. The Red Sox were facing the Tigers, and Tim Wakefield was on the mound. He went 5 innings and gave up 2 runs, one earned and only three hits. His control was not there, however. He gave up 5 (ouch!) walks in those 5 innings and his pitch count was 108. That's a ton of pitches for such a short outing, but he earned the victory. The bullpen could have had a better night, though. Delcarmen followed Wakes, surrendering one run in 1 2/3 innings. Not bad, not good. Okajima was called on to finish the 7th and did it with four pitches, but he was pulled before the 8th inning started, opening up manager Terry "Tito" Francona to all kinds of second guessing if something were to happen. And, Heaven forbid, it almost did. Terry said this after the game..."You don't want to use Okajima's bullets when we've got a big lead," said Francona, mindful of the Yankees' arrival tonight with their arsenal of lefthanded

    Canes Complete Sweep of Tigers
    2008-04-06 19:30:00
Miami didn't have an easy time of it this weekend. Despite the fact they swept the series, all 3 games were competitive until the very end. Last night's game was blown open late by an offensive barrage and tonight's game wasn't very different, as the Canes pulled off a 7-6 victory. The bats have been there this weekend, but for some reason our pitching staff has been struggling to get it done. Freshman Chris Hernandez turned in a subpar performance on Friday and Enrique Garcia returned to his early season form yesterday. The starting pitching kept Clemson in the games and we were lucky enough to drive in enough runs to come out of the weekend unscathed. It's nitpicking, but if Miami plans on being a title contender, they have to be consistent against top competition. Clemson is good but nothing special. If you have trouble against their lineup, then how will you fare against UNC or FSU? That's the only downside to Miami's season so far. They haven't really been tested by an elite team ye

Boston Red Sox 6 Hanshin Tigers 5
    2008-03-22 04:40:00
Big Papi David Ortiz hit a mammoth 500 plus foot home run but Clay Buchholz had another too short outing as the Boston Red Sox defeated the Hanshin Tigers by a score of 6-5. Clay "Bee" pitched 3 2/3 innings, throwing 76 pitches, 45 of them for strikes. He said this after his rather rough outing..."Overall, I thought it went pretty well. I left a couple of pitches up over the plate and that hurt," said Buchholz, who pitched a no-hitter last Sept. 1 in his second major league start. "The Tiger hitters stayed back on the ball better than I thought they might."So the Sox finally got to play a game. I worry about this topsy-turvy end of their pre-season, for they are missing out on the normal spring training schedule of games. Until yesterday, that is. They will play another exhibition game later today. All the regular season contests will be on NESN, and ESPN2 (with NESN) will screen the season opener on Tuesday morning. EARLY Tuesday morning. Tigers Top Canes
    2008-02-27 21:05:00
Clemson snapped the Hurricanes' 4 game win streak tonight, 79-69. Since the game wasn't televised, you probably don't know what kind of a rollercoaster ride this matchup became.Miami started off spotting Clemson an early 21 point lead before crawling back late in the 2nd half to take a one point advantage. However, we didn't get much of a contribution tonight from the offense and couldn't keep the rally going. What was good was that Miami fought back and made a game of it. Eddie Rios led us in scoring for much of the contest and finished with 12 points and 6 assists. Great game for the young point guard. However, we were the recipient of some home cookin, with Clemson going to the foul line 34 times to our 13. The disparity eventually was what prevented the Canes from finishing the game off at the end. Miami did well in pretty much every other offensive category. What they didn't do well in was keeping the Clemson offense from scoring. This team really is tough to gauge sometimes. Every t

Conditions are poor, with big cats including lions, tigers and leopards and other large animals including bears kept in solitary confinement in tiny cages. Elsewhere in [...]

I found this great little essay on the explosive nature of Thai women and simply had to share it with all of you. Hopefully it provides a nice filler while I recuperate from my jetlag and the cold I got when we returned back to Farangland and the wonderful -3C temperatures. Enjoy!!! By Andrew [...]

Indonesia seeks ways to save Sumatran elephants, tigers from extinction
    2007-08-31 17:39:00
"There is a very real danger that Sumatran elephants (and tigers) could become extinct in our lifetime if we don't come to agreement at this workshop," said Christy Williams of the World Wildlife Fund. Satellite images show that 8 million hectares of Sumatra island's remaining lowland tropical forest - the animals' primary habitat - were lost to development from 1990 to 2000, conservationists say. They estimate that there are only 2,400 to 2,800 Sumatran elephants left in the world, and no more than 400 tigers.

    Today’s Rangers/Tigers Game In Jeopardy?
    2007-06-27 20:01:36
As of 1:00 PM CST, there’s several large bands of severe thunderstorms moving through southeastern Michigan, including Detroit. Here’s a radar capture as of 12:50 PM: Today’s Rangers/Tigers game was due to start at 12:05 PM. These storms are moving relatively slowly at only 25 MPH, and while there will be a short break after this first band of storms moves through, the second band looks much more nasty. Right now, I think we’re looking at a best case scenario of a 2:30 start, and I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if they didn’t get this game in. You also have to keep in mind that after the storms pass, it’ll take at least 10 to 15 minutes for the groundscrew to prepare the field for play. UPDATE: Today’s Rangers/Tigers game has been postponed and rescheduled as part of a day-night doubleheader on September 11th. I hate to see a rainout and the possibility of it breaking the Rangers’ momentum, but then again, I thought Sunday’s

Tigers Bitten By “The Snake”; Rangers Win Again
    2007-06-26 08:52:28
Kameron Loe’s final pitching line tonight: 7 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 1 K, 0 HR. 15 groundball outs. And yet another win. The Rangers offense continues to roll, even without the services of Hank Blalock and Mark Teixeira. Texas scored four times in the 3rd inning against Jeremy Bonderman with plate discipline, some well placed singles, and a little luck. “The Snake” made the 4-1 lead stand up, with Kam once again leaning heavily on his sinker and breaking pitches to dominate Detroit’s lineup. Obviously, it worked. However, the game still hung in the balance going into the top of the 9th inning, with the Rangers nursing a narrow 4-2 lead. Eric Gagne was warming up in preparation for a third consecutive appearance, something that I certainly did not want to see after his struggles on Sunday night. Thankfully, the bats stepped up yet again, and one Eulogio De La Cruz implosion later, the Rangers had an 8-2 lead. Frankie Francisco made things much more interesting than

Education: Cheetahs, Pumas and Tigers, Oh My: The Two-Minute OS X History Primer
    2007-06-11 16:28:07
Later today we’ll find out what (if any) new secret features made it into Apple’s latest kitty—hopefully a few from our list—in addition to everything we already know. But there were past times, darker times, in the history of OS X—we didn’t always have widgets, Expose, or that rock-solid stability Apple pimps so hard as it blasts that card castle, Windows. Let’s take a trip in the OS X Time Machine (not that one) and reminisce over former feline days of yore. OS 10.0 “Cheetah“ Released March 24, 2001, the first consumer version of OS X left the Classic Mac OS in the dust—though much like Rosetta eased the transition to Intel processors, the Classic environment allowed you to still run older Mac apps. Cheetah introduced the Aqua interface, the Dock, and Mail. But it was also unstable, sluggish (blasphemy in the current Apple canon), and hardware didn’t “just work.” Put another way: It was bad enough 10.1 was re

Game 2: Sox Take Care Of Business With 4-2 Victory Over Tigers
    2007-05-18 12:26:00
***SHEFFIELD CALLS OKAJIMA "The best lefthander I've ever faced."*** What a day! 2 wins over the American League champion Detroit Tigers made for quite a sweet May 17th. In the opener, a 2-1 Sox win, Julian Tavarez pitched 7 strong innings and the Darkman, Hideki Okajima, threw a quick 8th, leading to a 10 pitch save for Paps. In the nightcap, Curt Schilling was off his game but managed to labor through 6 innings, throwing 118 pitches. I hope he's OK. That's 2 uninspiring starts in a row. Donnelly and Lopez combined to pitch a clean 7th and 8th and then it was time for the Darkman again. And Oki was up to the challenge. He earned the save with a 15 pitch 9th. He has been simply amazing, and after whiffing Sheffield, the hated (by us, at least) slugger called Okajima, our Darkman, "the best lefthander I've ever faced." WHERE ARE THOSE OKAJIMA T-SHIRTS?? Ya gotta love the guy!So the Sox go to a hairaising 28-12 as they prepare to face Atlanta. And as Ian mentioned yesterday, somethin

    GAME 1: Red Sox 2 Tigers 1
    2007-05-17 21:27:00
FINAL!!!! Tavarez for 7 strong, Okajima, our Darkman for 1 huge, and then there was Paps! The Boston Red Sox move to 27-12, and the hated Yankees are losing 4-0 to the OTHER Sox, the White ones. Tonight, Schill goes for the victory against Darbin. Things are good! I'll have a full wrap-up of BOTH games first thing on Friday. Great job, Sox pitching....yet again!

    Daisuke Completely Tames Tigers
    2007-05-15 12:27:00
Daisuke Matsuzaka was on last night. His cutter and split finger fastball were effective and his control was precise. Even the manager of the Tigers, Jim Leyland, was impressed. After the game he said this......."I was very impressed with him," Leyland said, a day after profanely dismissing the impending matchup with Matsuzaka. "He had composure and he had good stuff. He knows what to do with it. He's the real deal. He's good.""He's good" might be an understatement, at least last night. As Steve Buckley of the Herald wrote this very morning....."......he’s looking more and more like an old baseball soldier, wise to the ways of big league hardball, clued in to each batter’s likes and dislikes, his strengths, his weaknesses. Put another way, the work in progress is becoming poetry in motion. He was so smooth in pitching the Red Sox to their 7-1 victory against the Detroit Tigers last night at Fenway Park that by the middle innings, the masses knew, just knew, the Dice Man woul
