    Tobacco Free Sport.pdf
    2008-07-06 08:57:16
The Western Pacific Region of the World Health Organization has developed a tobacco free sports strategy with the overall aim of promoting a healthy and tobacco-free lifestyle through sports. The strategy aims to ensure that sports will promote best practice tobacco free sporting events at all opportunities. They will remove tobacco marketing and advertising from any association with sports and also ban the sale and consumption of tobacco. This Tobacco-Free Sports Manual supports the Regional strategy. It has been produced to encourage support from health, education, sports and other organisations representing the government and non government sectors. I commend it to all those who are serious about addressing the tobacco epidemic and breaking the unhealthy connection between sports and tobacco. Contents: 1. why tobacco hasn't been banned
    2008-05-26 04:02:11
by andy bradleyWhen i decided to write an article stating the main reasons why people should give up smoking, a million and one reasons came to mind, but then i thought on, anyone can write a list as long as my arm on the dangers of smoking. The point is that even though 99% of smokers out there, know that its harming there body, It still don't stop them from waking each morning and reaching straight for the cigarette and lighter. Why? is it cos people are afraid to quit? is it cos they decide to turn a cheek to the truth, that smoking is slowly killing them? or is it simply that they just keep putting it off till another day? not realizing until its too late. Whatever the reason people decide to carry on smoking, shouldn't someone be doing something? saying something? Well as i found out, after been a smoker of 13 years myself, the reason nobody doe's anything is because if there was no smokers, no cigarettes been made! There would be one hell of a hole in the governments pockets. `An

States Look to Tobacco Tax for Budget Holes
    2008-04-21 02:24:33
By KEVIN SACK To keep the state’s landmark universal health coverage plan afloat, Massachusetts lawmakers are looking to tap an increasingly popular source of financing for health-related initiatives: tobacco taxes. If the state raises its tax by as much as $1 a pack, it will join New York — and possibly a number of other states [...]

Smokeless Tobacco Continues To Cause Tooth Decay And Mouth Cancer
    2008-04-20 05:09:00
Many articles have been published detailing the danger of smokeless tobacco. Yet there are those people that still hold to the false belief that tooth decay and mouth cancer can be stopped by good dental hygiene. According to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, a government agency dealing with oral health, "there is no evidence that brushing and flossing will undo the harm that dip and chew are doing to your teeth and gums." Spit tobacco can be many different forms. It may be in powder form such as snuff. It could be "chew" tobacco in a leaf form, loose or twisted, dry or moist. But whatever the name, it is still tobacco. The tobacco industry prefers to call it smokeless tobacco. The name gives lulls you into the feeling that this type of tobacco consumption is not as bad as cigarettes or other types of tobacco smoking materials. Do not be fooled. This type of tobacco can be devastating to not only your dental hygiene, but also your health in general. Consider

Your baby's brain on drugs (and alcohol and tobacco)
    2008-04-07 15:13:32
Although behavioral studies clearly indicate that exposure to drugs, alcohol and tobacco in utero is bad for a baby’s developing brain, specific anatomic brain effects have been hard to tease out in humans. Often users don’t limit themselves to one substance, and demographic factors like poverty can also influence brain development. read more

Don’t Want Cancer? Tobacco & Obesity are top causes
    2008-03-01 12:47:11
Just read about an interesting conclusion that some scientists have come to after analyzing 300,000 cancer cases. Basically, they are now able to conclusively say that Obesity is a serious cause of cancer. After analysis, they can say that obesity is the cause of 20% of cancer. Which means obesity is beginning to seriously compete with tobacco  (cause of 30% of cancer) for the title of top cause of cancer. Tobacco To Be Used In a Vaccine for Amoeobiasis
    2008-01-18 05:23:00
For many people, tobacco represents a death sentence due to inflicting nicotine addiction, lung cancer, etc. But for the people of Central and South America at risk for amoebiasis, tobacco could instead be a lifesaver. The researchers at the University of Central Florida have been able to produce a protein against amoebiasis, a disease caused by the parasite entamoeba hisolytica, from genetically engineered tobacco plants.According to the researchers, the antigen derived from the genetically modified tobacco plant was found to be more efficient than the other genetically engineered plants.Further development in this method could pave way for low cost oral vaccines. The National Institute of Science and Media is at the forefront when it comes to the information on the advances made in the field of science and biotechnology.Joel Ball, the lead author on various study resources published on biotechnology and science under the NISM name is an established author in scientific and publishing c

    Tobacco: New Resource Of Sugar
    2008-01-18 04:52:00
Fructose is a sweetener used in many food products, primarily as a substitute for sucrose. The main reason for its rising popularity with the food manufacturers is the availability of large quantities of corn starch, which can be enzymatically converted to fructose on an industrial scale. An alternative and a cheap source of fructose production could be fructans, the storage carbohydrates in many plants. Fructans are multiple fructose polymers, which can be enzymatically or chemically hydrolyzed to yield fructose.Tobacco plants which are inserted with the gene of the bacterium bacillus subtilis levansucrase (SacB) are found to accumulate a stable amount of fructan similar to that produced by the microbe. The level of fructan accumulation in these transgenic tobacco plants is quite impressive and ranges between 3-8 percent of the total plant dry weight.Transgenic tobacco plants may pave way for the production of low cost sugar from other crop plants. The National Institute of Science and

    Tobacco Taxes in 1884
    2007-11-14 00:00:00
In recent years there has been much talk of increasing cigarette taxes to raise revenue, to stop people from smoking, and to fund health-care spending. These proposals have ignited debates over "sin taxes," tax-induced crime, the use of narrowly targeted taxes, and the appropriateness of using the tax code to change taxpayers' behavior. While some of these issues seem to belong squarely in the 20th and 21st centuries, the question of how to tax tobacco is not new. As this New York Times article from 1884 shows, policymakers have been grappling with this issue for quite a while (PDF available from New York Times archives):The tobacco representatives in Congress have had frequent consultations of late to devise some means to get the question of taxation before Congress, and it has been decided that the best opportunity will be afforded on Monday, when it will be in order to move to suspend the rules. Gen. Scales, of North Carolina, says that Mr. Hiscock, who is first on the Sp

Formula 1 - EU Presses For End Of Tobacco Ads in F1
    2007-09-01 07:32:00
Only few days ago news came out of China about their planned ban on tobacco advertising. The next anti tobacco drive came out of EUs health comissioner Marcos Kyprianou in his interview with Financial Times Deutschland.photo: f1wolf.com"Formula One is a symbol," he said. "We must limit the advertising of tobacco as much as possible so we can limit the influence on young people."Kyprianou said that the continued allowance of tobacco logos at the grands prix in China, Bahrain and Monaco was undermining the EU's ban on cigarette advertising. He met with Prince Albert of Monaco to discuss the matter earlier this week and plans to meet with Chinese officials next week."If European citizens still see tobacco advertising during races, it undermines the purpose of our legislation," he said."Formula One drivers are extremely popular: they can become models. If they carry the name of a tobacco company on their chest then that sends the wrong message straight to young people."He also wrote a let

OK, it is not going to happen overnight, but it looks like the biggest tobacco market is ready to make some steps to rein in smoking. The Chinese news report today (The Beijing News)that China, the world's biggest cigarette producer and consumer, will ban all tobacco advertising by 2011. The Shanghai F1 race contract runs only through 2010. It will be interesting to see what will Bernie come up with when negotiating new, tobacco free one :-)

Senate Finance Committee Approves SCHIP Expansion Legislation That Would Increase Tobacco Tax
    2007-07-20 15:00:00
Senate panel OKs $35B increase for kids' health care By Richard Wolf and David Jackson USA TODAY WASHINGTON — The biggest expansion of health insurance likely to emerge from Congress in the next two years cleared its first hurdle Thursday but remains on a collision course with President Bush's threatened veto. The Senate Finance Committee voted 17-4 for a five-year, $35 billion increase to the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP), which now enables health coverage for 6.6 million children. An estimated 3.2 million more uninsured people could be covered under the plan. It would be paid for by raising the 39-cent federal tax on a pack of cigarettes to $1. The plan attracted six of the panel's 10 Republicans, along with all 11 Democrats. Committee Chairman Max Baucus, a Montana Democrat, confidently predicted Senate passage before Congress adjourns for its August recess. "It's clear to me this will not be filibustered" or blocked by Republicans, he said.Abridged read it all he

Legislators Pit "Big Tobacco" Against Children
    2007-07-18 07:00:00
Using rhetoric that is almost laughable, in the battle over S-CHIP, some on the Senate Finance Committee have decided to pull out the big-tobacco-versus-children argument. From the Washington Post:As a Senate committee prepared to approve an additional $35 billion for children's health insurance, the Bush administration spelled out its objections to how the increase would be paid for-a 61-cent increase on the excise tax for a pack of cigarettes."Ironically, the proposed legislation would increase taxes on low-income taxpayers as a way to fund health coverage for low-income individuals," Health and Human Services Secretary Mike Leavitt said Tuesday in a letter to Sens. Max Baucus, D-Mont., and Charles Grassley, R-Iowa.Baucus replied with his own letter to Leavitt. "When given the choice between standing with big tobacco companies and standing with kids, I stand with America's children," said the chairman of the Senate Finance Committee.Legislators must realiz

Tobacco Taxes Fastest Growing Tax from 2000 to 2005
    2007-05-16 07:00:00
The growing trend in recent years has been to raise revenue in ways that are politically feasible, which is why new Census data shows that the fastest growing tax at the state and local level has been tobacco taxes, despite rapidly growing property taxes. Raising taxes on tobacco products is an easy political sell because tobacco tax revenue benefits all taxpayers but only a minority of people must pay any significant amount of the tax.The following table shows the percent change in tax revenue combined at the state/local level by type of tax from fiscal year 2000 through fiscal year 2005. The figures are not adjusted for inflation, and are therefore nominal. Of the big tax sources (property, income and sales), property taxes have risen the most, followed by general sales. Knowing what we know generally about the incidence of these taxes, it appears as if those tax sources that are growing more rapidly are the more regressive taxes like general sales, public utilities, and tobacco (and

Hippocratus, Alcohol, Tobacco, DNA Aging, Chemotherapy and Cancer
    2007-02-19 09:09:00
Hippocrates described several kinds of cancers. He called benign tumours oncos, Greek for swelling, and malignant tumours carcinos, Greek for crab or crayfish. The most consistent finding, over decades of research, is the strong association between tobacco use and cancers of many sites. Hundreds of epidemiological studies have confirmed this association. Lifestyle choices cause cancer: tobacco, diet, exercise, sex, alcohol, and tanning choices are the major risks. Most cancers are related to known lifestyle factors.Cancer can be treated by surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, immunotherapy, monoclonal antibody therapy or other methods. The choice of therapy depends upon the location and grade of the tumor and the stage of the disease, as well as the general state of the patient (performance status). A number of experimental cancer treatments are also under development. Complete removal of the cancer without damage to the rest of the body is the goal of treatment.Much of the promise
