    destination tokyo: aka heaven
    2008-08-14 13:36:00
I just came across Nozomi Ishiguro and fell in love. Hard. It's no surprise though, seeing as he worked for my favorite house, CDG. I'm kind of sad he's not as successful as the CDG breakout designers, because he truly deserves the hype and seriously... what the hell is not perfect with every. single. piece?I need this dress please give it to me please and thank youIt's so fun and childish and I want those leather pants and pretty much every piece right nowwww.NOZOMI ISHIGURO GOLD 2008-2009 AUTUMN/WINTERArt as fashion. Pattern pattern textures structure OH THE AESTHETIC IS SO PERFECT AHHHHH.Susie could explain this designer's work or at least a literate opinion of it so much better than me, but I'm lazy and I trust you all to gather your own opinions. The reason I fancy designers such as Nozomi is probably because I have a vastly different style. I'd love to experiment with fabrics and textures in outfits like the ones Nozomi creates, though. No limits = best results.

Japan's Apple fans begin camping out in Tokyo for iPhone 3G launch on Friday
    2008-07-11 04:33:20
Hiroyuki Sano, a graduate student who turns 25 this week, couldn't think of a better way Wednesday to celebrate his birthday than being the first person in Japan to own an iPhone. So he ditched class in Nagoya and headed 160 miles north to Tokyo's trendy Omotesando district, home to mobile carrier Softbank Corp.'s flagship store. Sano arrived at 6 a.m. Tuesday, grabbed the first spot in line and prepared to wait three days and one hour until Apple's much-hyped handset goes on sale Friday at 7 a.m.A longtime Apple fan, he brought along his MacPro laptop and iPod, as well as a change of clothes, an umbrella, snacks and a folding chair. He even got permission to skip school."My professor is a big Apple fan, so when I told him I wanted to come line up for the iPhone, he told me to go for it," Sano said after a fitful night of sleep in his chair. "My mom told me I was crazy."About 15 other iPhone enthusiasts had joined Sano in line as of Wednesday morning, eager to get their hands on a devi

    Tokyo's Rush Hour
    2008-06-23 08:20:00
I have never imagined that a typical rush hour in Japan could somehow endanger your life. One morning I hurried towards the train platform in Chuo Line and it was already jam-packed with people. To intensify my suffering, the train which arrived, was already also full of people coming from previous stations. It was really awful. Getting inside was very difficult. A lot of people are squeezing themselves in between narrow spaces. I once worked in Manila and often ride in the MRT along EDSA during rush hour but when people see that the train is already crowded, they don’t force themselves to squeeze inside the train. But here, even if they see that the train is already full, they still push people within the doors just for them to get in. This was the real rush hour incomparable with Metro Manila’s railway. One tragic experience of mine was positioning in a wrong area of the car. I used to position in the middle of the car, standing along with my laptop bag. This proved, in many occa

JAPANESE 'CANNIBAL NERD' WHO PREYED ON CHILDREN EXECUTED IN TOKYO
    2008-06-17 14:26:05
Tuesday, June 17, 2008By Leo LewisTOKYO — Japan’s most reviled serial killer – a “cannibal nerd” who preyed on primary-school girls and drank their blood – has been executed in Tokyo. The hanging of 45-year old Tsutomu Miyazaki brings to 13 the number of death-row inmates who have faced the gallows since last August: a pace that has provoked rising criticism of Japan’s new justice minister, Kunio Hatoyama. But even amid growing public discomfort in Japan over the continued use of the death penalty, the hanging of Miyazaki raised very little in the way of condemnation. His crimes may have taken place two decades ago, but the mere mention of Miyazaki’s name remains sickening for many Japanese. Unrepentant throughout his long run of trials and appeals, Miyazaki entered Japan’s public consciousness as one of the worst monsters the country had produced.A voracious sexual predator, he kidnapped girls aged between four and seven years old, molested and murdered them. as an amateur photographer, i do consider myself to be a bit of an artist. nevertheless, i try to photograph the world as it appears to me-- and as such, the only editing i tend to do via photoshop is to balance the tones and colors after i scan. however, just as some photographers may use photoshop to selectively retouch a scene, i was reminded by this chap that painting was the original way of selectively editing things. i find it intriguing as to how and why painters select a particular subject to place onto their canvas; it's interesting, too, that some choose to capture the quieter elements of the scene rather than the bustle.

well-- at first glance, this particular shot seemed to have some major problems for me: the blossoms were perfectly exposed but the temple doors and wall were way, way underexposed. and then, for whatever reason it dawned on me: that's what had struck me about this particular shot in the first place: the blossoms had seemed so brilliant as to be on fire, emitting a brilliance that dimmed everything around.

Sox Open With a Win in Tokyo
    2008-03-22 12:22:00
The Red Sox opened their four game jaunt in Japan with a win on Saturday afternoon (Friday night/Saturday morning in the Eastern US) with a 6-5 win over the Hanshin Tigers in the Tokyo Dome. A raucous, sellout crowd saw the Sox score four runs in the first on a David Ortiz home run and a three-run shot by J.D. Drew. The Tigers are very similar to the Red Sox in that they have probably the most knowlegeable, rabid and passionate fan base of any team in Japan. They follow the team all over Japan, and sometimes outnumber the home team's fans. (Sound familiar?)Clay Buchholz once again struggled this spring, giving up four runs to Hanshin in the second. In all four starts he's gotten knocked around. Granted, you can't get too high or low when it comes to spring training, but you have to wonder if Buchholz could probably do with some more time in AAA.But the good news is that there were no injuries last night, and the Sox will play Japan's equivalent of the Yankees, the Yomiuri Giants, at the

    Tokyo Bound!
    2008-03-19 05:05:00
It seems that Spring Training has passed quickly this year. After the Toronto game in Florida today (Wednesday), the Red Sox will begin their seventeen hour trip to the Far East. I wish them a safe flight...the Sox players will try to stay awake the entire trip to help with their sleep cycles in a completely different time zone. What a difference a twelve (or is it thirteen?) hour time difference can and will make. This is from the Boston Globe..."The last thing we need is us complaining about this," Francona said. "I hope you never hear an excuse about [not playing well] because of this trip."It is not a competitive advantage. Hopefully we'll be going as a very good representative of major league baseball, and we'll win some games."It will not and cannot be a win-at-all-costs mentality, however. For instance, Coco Crisp and Bobby Kielty, who have been battling injuries, learned yesterday they would make the trip, but most likely would see action only in the two exhibition contests.Eps

coming of age day, tokyo, 2008
    2008-03-04 23:00:00
(4:4) I'm not quite sure why, but I think this photo is so expressive of Japanese patience. When the Japanese reach age 20, they are considered adults; they can finally legally have a beer, drive, and enjoy all of the other benefits of adulthood. Often, to signify this rite of passage, women will dress in these kinds of elaborate kimono, head to a ceremony at the local town hall, and then head off to the pub or to karaoke with their friends. Older people, and men in particular, love this holiday as it lets them exercise their photography skills. Female photographers will often approach these kimono-clad women and ask for their permission to take a photo; afterwards they have a bit of a chat. Male photographers, on the other hand, seem to feel assume the role of director for one day, and seem to just walk up to random women and start posing them for a photo. Odd, I thought; but it's a funny thing to watch

    Fiat 500 Tokyo Launch
    2008-02-23 12:56:00
The new Fiat 500 had made the Euro/UK launch months ago, today, the Fiat 500 Japan Launch went off at Tokyo's Italian Institute of Culture, in Chiyoda.Fiat Japn rolled out the new 500 in textbook Japanese style, the girls clad in traditional wakufu kimonos, even the cherry blossom. And Tokyo’s motoring press turned up in numbers. They invited 500; more than 1000 actually arrived, many of whom had to be refused access to the Institute’s Umberto Agnelli auditorium. The 500 is big deal for Fiat Japan. The firm’s distribution outfit is a fairly small one in comparison with Fiat UK.It sells 6000 cars a year right now, whereas Fiat UK turns around probably six times as many. The 500 is a car, it’s hoping, that can effectively double its sales, up beyond the 10,000 cars mark for 2008, and beyond that for 2009.And driving around this city, it’s easy to see why. Contrary to what you may expect, Tokyo’s is actually quite a staid, unimaginative automotive landscape – but it’s also

Based on Porsche's newly-facelifted 957 Cayenne, the X-treme is a 'Swiss Extravaganza' with distinction fitted as standard. An aggressive aerodynamics package, available on all new Cayenne models, complements substantial upgrades to the car's powertrain and a more diversified cabin specification. Rinspeed of Switzerland have designed the X-treme to markedly differentiate itself from Porsche's Cayenne, putting dynamism and a distinctive character at the forefront of its brief. Larger front air intakes, with fins and front splitter, air fatter brakes and a higher-output 600 hp engine. The gaping front, much like beefier wheel arches, gives the impression of a wider, more dynamic vehicle, while a 35mm lowered ride height brings with it a more poised stance. The side skirt elegantly and unobtrusively integrates into the body and its larger arches, while understated

    Supersonic sightseeing in Tokyo
    2008-01-25 08:23:00
We arrived in Tokyo on Sunday and we were leaving on Tuesday morning. We’d planned to do some sightseeing during the day and attend the Bon Jovi shows at night. But once we got to Tokyo we found out that the concerts started at the insanely early time of 17:00! And I had to pickup my fanclub tickets a couple of hours before the show, which meant I had to be back at the Tokyo Dome around 14:00 on both days. Well, seeing as we arrived after 12:00 on Sunday there wasn’t much time for us to go roam about an unknown cosmopolitan, so we decided to chill in the Tokyo Dome vicinity. After the concert, it was simply too cold to voluntarily be outside so we hung out in the hotel bar instead. But we didn’t come all the way to Tokyo to not see anything in this huge city, so we decided to get up (uncharacteristically) early on Monday and play tourist for a couple of hours in Tokyo.First of all, I really wanted to see the huge crossing they show at the end of the movie ‘Lost in Translation

    Lining up in Tokyo
    2008-01-23 20:03:00
So about two weeks ago I went to Tokyo (for the first time ever) to attend two more Bon Jovi concerts. Kristin came along to Tokyo because she’d never been there before either and she wanted to see Bon Jovi as well. So she bought one of my leftover concert tickets and I sold the other one to an Italian girl who read about my ticket surplus on this blog. On Sunday morning we got the Shinkansen out of Nagoya all the way to Tokyo, for the very first time! It’s twice as expensive as going to Osaka (which makes sense because the trip takes about twice the amount of time it takes to get to Osaka) but when Bon Jovi is concerned money matters less somehow. Second expensive decision I made for the weekend was to stay in the Tokyo Dome Hotel, because it was convenient (it’s right next to the Dome as the name implies), and I was sick of my tiny freezer that Japanese people call an apartment and the hotel’s rooms looked so good online…and they were truly excellent! Bon Jovi in Tokyo ~ Tokyo Dome (January 14, 2008)
    2008-01-14 09:01:00
Tonight holds a new record: the highest number of failed pictures I have ever taken at a Bon Jovi concert! So I got over the whole being-afraid-to-take-pictures thing with the printout about the photo contest in my pocket and my fanclub membership card around my neck. Which I never even needed because as it turned out I was seated behind a rather tall guy who not only blocked my view of Richie but also the security’s view of me and my camera. My seat was located somewhere in between Jon and Hugh and just 5 rows from the stage (probably the best seat of all 3 nights), so the distance from the stage wasn’t really a problem either.'Raise Your Hands 'So how did I manage to royally screw up about 95% of my pictures? Well, it seems that when I selected my cute new tiny white camera in the store, I forgot to ask about it’s ability to take pictures of Jon, Richie and the rest in action in the dark (well, it’s hard in Japanese). Tonight, through the lens of my camera, the band members had glaring white skin, and the big video screen had a nasty brown glow about it. I tried and tried and tried, but almost all the pictures seemed to contain fuzzy balls of light with clothes on. I did manage a small number of half-decent-looking ones, but halfway I just gave up. Besides the battery of my camera was almost empty (that’s what you get when you spend the whole morning taking pictures all over Tokyo), and I wanted to save the last of it to record Bon Jovi waving goodbye to the audience. Anyway, I should seriously consider getting a new camera if I’m going to any Bon Jovi shows in Europe, because mine is seriously inadequate. I did manage to record some short videos tonight, just so that I would have something to share on here, and they communicate the atmosphere of the show better than pictures anyway.'Any Other Day' this time without the Tokyo Dome ceilingSo tonight’s show was broadcasted live on Tokyo’s WOWOW TV channel, and it was noticeable in the band’s at

Nissan will vie for the SUPER GT Championship, one of the world's most demanding GT race series, with the new machine built on the same multi-performance super car concept of the Nissan GT-R road car.The new livery resulted from close collaboration between Nissan's design team and NISMO, its motorsports affiliate company, and incorporates feedback from members of the "Club NISMO" fan club. The signature wide "brush stroke" design motif, synonymous with the current Fairlady Z race car, was carried forward into the new GT-R racing car as Nissan's racing fans worldwide could immediately associate with the design. The livery design swipes forward from the rear in bold red and black - the red symbolizes the passion for racing, while the black signifies the high performance of the new Nissan GT-R.Further details of the GT500 Nissan GT-R including technical specifications will be announced on January 31st, as well as Nissan's full range of global motorsports activities for the coming season.Video: Nissan GT-R GT500 Test in Fuji Speedway2008 Detroit Auto Show: Buick Riviera Concept2008 Detroit Auot Show: 2009 Dodge Ram http://del.icio.us/rss/horisly

Bon Jovi in Tokyo ~ Tokyo Dome (January 13, 2008)
    2008-01-13 05:37:00
Tonight holds the record for the least amount of pictures I have ever taken at a Bon Jovi show, the show in Nagoya was the first record holder, but tonight totally shattered Nagoya’s record! The amount of security angrily (at least that is how their faces looked) scanning the crowd was triple the amount in Nagoya, and I could see a security guy’s face every which way I looked, which meant they could also see mine and therefore also see my camera if I held it in front of my face. So that was quite frustrating!! Already frustrated ;)After initially giving up on taking pictures, I spotted two German girls (they had flags that’s how I knew) blatantly taking pictures with a huge zoom right next to a security guard! I wondered if they were some kind of VIPs, but they seemed to have the same thing around their necks as yours truly: just a fanclub membership card. I was fascinated by them and my desire to take pictures flared up again! But I was too scared to be kicked out, so I only took very few really crappy pictures (as you can see displayed in this review). So right after the show ended (unfortunately just after their bow yet again), I hurried over to the German girls and asked them how they managed to take pictures all night without being escorted out. And they told me they were confronted by about 4 to 5 security fanatics at once and they just explained about the contest (they brought a printout) and showed their fanclub membership card, which admittedly does look pretty impressive this year. I’m not sure how hard they had to fight the security, but what is important is that they won! Ow, I love European stubbornness! And these sweet girls actually gave me their printout, so tomorrow it’s picture time at Tokyo Dome for Lou!Jon abruptly moving from left to right repeatedly just before 'Shout'So before I discovered the Germans, I was only thinking about how on earth I was going to take some pictures and it was way too distracting, so I decided to just enjoy

Tokyo Auto Salon, one of the Japanese local tuning shows, will hold from January 11 to 13. And Japanese are mad for individualising their cars, ranging from insane exhaust tip action to the more down-to-earth body kits.At this year's 2008 Tokyo Auto Salon, Nissan is bringing five concepts and two racing cars. The term concept is a bit broad in this case since it mainly refers to a new body kit / suspension / wing etc and not an actual concept study. Nissan has released images of the cars but no details so we have to wait for the nitty-gritty until the show.First in line is the new 2009 Nissan Skyline, both in coupe and sedan guise. The Skyline is piggybacking on the GT-R and seems ready for a sportier package, the aerosports package for the coupe and simply aero for the sedan.Second are the SUV's like the Nissan X-Trail X-tremer and Dualis (or Qashqai) Premium Concept. The X-Trail is tuned in-house while Autech has taken care of the Dualis. Autech also received a Nissan Caravan to pl

    Tokyo Mirage
    2007-12-06 15:05:00

Tokyo 2016: The Bid for the 2016 Summer Olympics
    2007-11-30 23:50:00
I first saw the Tokyo 2016 Summer Olympic Games campaign print ad on Ueno Zoo. And indeed they are battling against Azerbaijan (Baku), Brazil (Rio de Janiero), Qatar (Doha), USA (Chicago, Illinois), Czech Republic (Prague), and Spain (Madrid) to host the 2016 Summer Olympics. If Japan wins for the bid this 2009, then Japan should prepare their entire citizenry to speak English like what Beijing, China did. If Japan restricts VISA to foreign nationals to work for the Olympics, then they should rely on their local workforce. By then, these individuals must be able to speak English in a minimum capacity. This is needed in cases such as tourists will ask for directions, look for places, ask for alternatives, or maybe just have a cup of coffee in a local coffee shop.Well, I hope I am still or will be here in Tokyo by 2016. I want to see the opening and closing ceremonies of this spectacular event. But what the hell, it's 9 years to go and we won't even know who will win the bid until the n

    Missing Filipino Christmas from Tokyo
    2007-11-28 07:39:00
Tokyo's airwaves is filled with Christmas songs and littered with Christmas Trees lighted in different colors. But, as a Filipino, I don't really feel the smell of Christmas. It seemed there is lacking. Well, just today, I saw 4 people in Santa Claus costumes. Two of which in Keio University during lunch time and another two stood in front of Tamachi Station giving Christmas gospel CDs for free. I am sure they are not the ones on Keio because the two Santa Clauses I saw at the station are real foreigners with accent while in Keio University, are Japanese native speakers. So how is Philippine way of celebrating Christmas different from Japan? There are several differences.1. The Philippine celebration of Christmas is more of spiritual and a way for family to reunite, eat and store fat on our bodies and light firecrackers. But in Davao, I think this year is the 4th year that there is a total ban on firecrackers. So it is okay for me here in Tokyo to hear nothing during Christmas and New

The dilemma of the gaijin has sprung up to send money to his native country. The saga continues with his adventure in the outskirts of metropolitan Tokyo. There are so many obstacles that you will face here. First, you can't do any bank transaction such as ATM registration nor cellphone plan availment nor Internet subscription nor anything that has a contract unless you have your FINAL alien card registration. Thus, sending money to Philippines using bank to bank transaction is impossible, unless your officemate does it for you. So what are the options? Western Union at Suruga Bank outlet in Tokyo. Finding this bank for the first time in Central Tokyo is very difficult for the first time. There are a couple of options. You can take the subway or JR train. The subway is the nearest, fastest and easiest way but I tried it using JR to go there. When sending money, please do not forget to bring your passport with VISA and your final alien registration card. If your alien registration card i

The station lies within the central business district of the Chinese community. Here, you can find everything from "toothpick to battleship," a common joke of Chinese traders in Davao City. The first time I went there, I was with our neighbor in Davao, Ryan who also works here, and he toured me to this amazing place. Streets are filled with side-street shops selling very cheap watches, bags, golf and golf accessories, clothes from branded to never-been-heard brands, shoes, bags, toys, lots and lots of food stalls catering Japanese and Chinese goods like manju, rice cakes, tuna rice bowls, okonomiyaki, different kin

Top 5 Annoying Things in Tokyo
    2007-11-19 07:40:00
Here are my first Top 5 annoying things in Japan.1. The bicycle driver and the combined bicycle and pedestrian lanes. Tokyo is a nice place to stroll. Or I guess, everybody is walking since trains (another special mention of the train)are the most efficient mode of transportation here. But sometimes, bicycles along with their sometimes irresponsible drivers are far more dangerous than cars on the road. Why? First of all, bicycles apparently show up anywhere without warning. If you don't want to get surprised in every intersection and street you walk along the metropolitan Tokyo, take a very cautious look on approaching bicycles behind you from time to time. The bicycle lane and pedestrian lane combined is dangerous in my opinion. Thus, the government should implement to all bicycles an early warning of their presence to pedestrians such as horns or bells. Gosh, why haven't they thought of that.2. Black crows and the-like birds of prey. Most of them are too familiar with people where

(And Okie will be pitching in the stadium he called home for a decade before coming to Boston.) Both clubs will also play two exhibition games against Japanese teams there in the two days before playing each other. After the series, both teams will get five days off before both go to Oakland to play two more games against each other there and get the regular season going in the U.S. (Although the Red Sox may play a couple of exhibition games on the West Coast before starting the regular season again
