| Tesla Roadster to appear on Top Gear? | | 2008-08-25 08:32:00 | | Top Gear's Jeremy Clarkson has had nothing but bad luck when it comes to testing electric cars. Maybe the problem is that he's never gotten his hands on the right one. Reports are coming in from across the pond that the popular television series has recently procured a Tesla Roadster for Mr. Clarkson to wedge his rather large and surly self into. We have a feeling that Jeremy will like this car -- its performance, after all, rivals that of many gas-powered cars we consider super. Plus, it has British roots, and anybody who has ever watched the show knows that this fact earns brownie points from the three-man crew. When will the test take place? That's a good question. Our compatriots over at AutoblogGreen have contacted Daryl Siry, head PR man at the Silicon Valley EV company, who told us that no specific date has been set. He did assure us, however, that a test will definitely take place. When it does, we sure hope that it goes better than the last electric vehicle test. Seriously, it ... | | By: Car News | | |
| | Clarkson and BBC team up to take Top Gear global | | 2008-08-15 15:43:00 | | A new business deal signed between the BBC on the one hand and Top Gear host Jeremy Clarkson and producer Andy Wilman on the other could see the vast expansion of the Top Gear brand worldwide. The deal involves BBC Worldwide, the international commercial arm of the government-owned television network, taking a majority stake in Badder 6. The latter is a company set up by Clarkson and Wilman two years ago for reasons unknown, but will now act to channel all revenues from the Top Gear brand back to the BBC, Clarkson and Wilman. The deal is seen as a necessity to keep Clarkson happy so he'll remain on the show amidst offers from competing networks and producers for the world's most famous automotive journalist. Badder 6, which now includes three top-level BBC Worldwide executives, will be responsible for managing the marketing of Top Gear around the world, including the magazine, the original British television program, the new program for the United States undertaken by NBC, an additional... | | By: Car News | | |
| | Top Gear USA: Howie Mandel, Melanie B to flog Kia Rio | | 2008-07-27 13:24:00 | | What would Top Gear be without a star in a reasonably priced car? Well... better, for one thing. But that hasn't stopped NBC from porting over the red-headed step-child of Top Gear segments to the imported version of the show. According to Jalopnik, during tomorrow's taping, B-listers C-listers D-listers Howie Mandel and Melanie B (former Spice Girl) will be piloting the U.S.'s own version of a reasonably-priced car – a Kia Rio – around the newly minted Top Gear test track. What can we expect? Nothing good, we thinks. Nor does it bode well that both pseudo-celebs are part of the NBC franchise. Depressed? We thought so. But the taping is tomorrow, so we'll try to remain upbeat until the first reports from inside the studio surface.[Source: Jalopnik]Tag: Kia, Celebrities... | | By: Car News | | |

| Nissan GT-R laps the Top Gear test track in... | | 2008-07-19 08:20:00 | | This Sunday, Top Gear will finally get to test the mettle of the Nissan GT-R on the track. Well, "tracks" to be specific. Clarkson's appetite for tail-out antics wasn't satiated by last week's race against the bullet train, so he headed to a track in Japan to get a feel for the GT-R's capabilities at the limit and a chance to wring out Nissan's super coupe past its nanny-imposed 111 mph top speed.Back in the UK, the Stig finally takes the GT-R around Top Gear's test track and that meant that members of the studio audience got a chance to see the GT-R's lap time. Earlier this morning, we received word that the time had been posted on Wikipedia. We saw it, our jaw dropped and then it disappeared. Wikipedia being, well... Wikipedia, means that we're taking the time with a grain of salt until the show airs on Sunday. While the lap isn't listed any longer, Wikipedia does allow users to view the revisions made to an entry. If you want to spoil it for yourself, feel free, just don't post it i... | | By: Car News | | |
| | By: Quatro rodas e um volante! | | |

| Top Gear sem May e Hammond? | | Tension off-camera? Top Gear pay dustup rumored | | 2008-07-06 13:26:00 | | It should come as no surprise that Jeremy Clarkson is pulling down more cash than his Top Gear cohorts. Not only does Clarkson own a stake of the show's rights, he's more of a figurehead for the series than either James May or Richard Hammond. Clarkson has become nearly an adjective to describe any auto pundit expressing a strong opinion in a certain manner. While May and Hammond seem happy enough with their slightly-diminished status in the show hierarchy, rumors about flat-out contract rejections and threats of departure are flying behind the scenes.James May's people state that they're not looking for parity with Clarkson's £2-million yearly earnings, but they are aiming for the best deal possible. Arlington Enterprises spokesperson, Annie Sweetbaum, has commented that nascent negotiations are progressing, and that the BBC's first offer is never the one accepted. Hamster's people dodged commenting, but we're sure his representation also aims for the fattest checks it can secure. N... | | By: Car News | | |
| | Tanner Foust sheds light on Top Gear USA in blog interview | | 2008-07-02 17:09:00 | | With all our mouths salivating over the upcoming NBC version of the hit BBC program Top Gear, the guys over at Autofiends got a chance to sit down with Tanner Foust. As we revealed a couple of weeks ago, in addition to being a drifting and rallying champion, Tanner will be one of the three hosts – alongside Adam Carolla and Eric Stromer – who will be anchoring the Americanized show. The interview makes for an interesting read, and in the process Foust casts a bit more light on what we can expect from the show. For example, while the BBC's publicly-funded format allows for full-hour shows, the NBC program will run closer to 42 minutes with commercials breaking up the shorter segments. The show's test track – en route to which Foust got lost with Jeremy Clarkson in a Callaway Corvette – is based in Orange County, California. And to the best of his understanding, Foust and his co-hosts will be free to speak their minds about the vehicles they'll be reviewing, which he promises wil... | | By: Car News | | |

| | | First Top Gear Series 11 commercial: Tigers racing Badgers | | 2008-06-11 06:14:00 | | They really are dragging out the introduction of the 11th season of Top Gear, and we don't mean in the tire smoking way, either. But a commercial like this one after the jump helps to pass the time. There is nothing we could say that could best the BBC trio in this first ad for the telly. As for the second commercial, well, you can't win them all. But tigers racing badgers more than makes up for it, so follow the jump to check them out. | | Goodness Gracious: Top Gear magazine asks for a Veyron, gets three instead | | 2008-05-24 08:58:00 | | After the numerous reports we've brought you about the wealth of Bugatti Veyrons to be found in the United Arab Emirates, it should hardly come as any big surprise that when Top Gear magazine turned up in the capital Abu Dhabi, it had no trouble finding one for a photo shoot. In fact it didn't find just one, but three examples of the million-dollar supercar, with reclusive owners willing to hand over the keys to the British magazine.Nor were these any run-of-the-mill Veyrons, either. Any true gearhead would know that the Veyron typically comes in two-tone paintjobs, but a few have left the factory in Molsheim with monotone tints, like the all-red example we reported on previously. That one, or one just like it, was one of the vehicles which the Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority tracked down for TG, along with an all-white example and the extremely exclusive Pur Sang bare-aluminum-and-carbon edition spotted in the emirate previously. It's not every day that you see three Veyrons in the same ... | | By: Car News | | |
Most exciting for me is that we’ve finally come up with another big race - you know, car versus something or other. The last time we did one was a couple of years ago, with the plane against the Veyron, and in hindsight we lost the plot in that one - too pompous, too overblown and preposterous, too much work on the scripting to make it funny. This one is back to basics, more hardcore, mega car, mega opponent, with a solid premise. And a clue for the geeks: we did it in Japan.Elsewhere, we’ve tackled rural issues such as the fox hunting ban and fascist ramblers.... | | By: Quatro rodas e um volante! | | |
| | More info on NBC's plans for Top Gear USA | | 2008-05-17 11:21:00 | | We reported yesterday that both NBC's Fall 2008 and Summer 2009 lineups will not include the U.S. version of Top Gear, but that doesn't mean the peacock network isn't keeping the show as a feather in its multicolor plume. There's a section on NBC's website for primetime shows being developed for the 2008-2009 season, and one page is devoted to Top Gear USA. We found its description intriguing. The show is described as three friends performing outrageous challenges and stunts through the "crazy transformations" they make to their cars. Sure, that's one aspect of the show that Clarkson, Mays and Hammond built, but what about the new car reviews that are hilarious, real and informative, as well as featuring the best cinematography on television anywhere in the world? Also, we find it funny that the U.S. cast of hosts, whoever they may be, are described as being "friends". The British hosts are of course BFF, having done the show together for years now, but we doubt the American hosts will... | | By: Car News | | |
| | NBC passes on U.S. Top Gear for now | | 2008-05-15 21:18:00 | | NBC's dubious attempt to duplicate the unique cachet of Top Gear with a Stateside spinoff has apparently come to a screeching halt. They couldn't even get it together on a cast, so the news doesn't come entirely as a surprise. The newly announced fall lineup doesn't save a seat for "Gear," though room is made in the lineup for that clunker of a retread that is Knight Rider. Seeing how much worse NBC has managed to make the campfest original Knight Rider, we're all better off without a watered-down, sucking-up, entirely neutered iteration of the original. Done before it even started -- we've all been spared by a mild outbreak of sense at a TV network. Thanks for the tip, r4m3n.[Source: Dark Horizons]... | | By: Car News | | |

| | Mercedes CBU plan into top gear | | 2008-02-12 20:35:00 | | Mercedes-Benz Vietnam has won a licence to import complete-built units likely to fuel skyrocketing vehicle ownership rates. Honda Vietnam recently confirmed it would import complete-built units (CBUs) from 2009.Udo Loersch, Mercedes-Benz Vietnam’s general director, said customers would now be able to buy Mercedes-Benz vehicles from genuine sources and felt totally assured of the origins and verification of the cars.He said customers could enjoy post-sale services and spare parts provided by Autohaus Mercedes-Benz, the firm’s agents, nationwide and this would help them avoid the problems facing those who buy imported products from other sources. The firm will import saloons, coupés, SUVs, off-roaders, roadsters and Cabriolets which include the S350 L, S500 L, CLS350, R350 L, ML350, SLK350, GL320 CDI, and GL450 models.Mercedes-Benz Vietnam will announce sale prices by February. | | Top Gear for Photo Enthusiasts | | 2007-10-26 02:26:00 | | So what if you're not paid for your photography? With the right software and hardware you can still make your photos look like a million bucks. But where do you start? Buying professional-grade gear isn't cheap, so you'll want to make sure you invest your cash wisely. It all starts with picking the right camera. Point-and-shoot cameras are good for taking snapshots on vacation or family events, but serious photographers will need to step up to a digital SLR. SLRs, or single lens reflex cameras, direct light toward the viewfinder as you compose a photo, letting you view a crisp optical image while framing, focusing, and snapping the picture. Since you're looking at the actual reflected light and not an LCD approximation, you see a brighter and sharper image, making composition easier. SLRs also tend to have more expensive lenses that produce sharper pictures with better color contrast than point-and-shoot cameras. In the past, buying a D-SLR meant shelling out $5,000 or more—out of reach for most. Today, you can find a decent one that won't drain your bank account nearly as much. The camera featured in this roundup, the Nikon D40, is a great entry-level D-SLR that costs less than $1,000.Once you've got your camera, you'll need the right software to bring the best out of your images. Photoshop CS3 is the go-to app for professional-level image editing. Since this app offers a complete photo-editing solution, you can save money by buying the stand-alone app, without getting the full Creative Suite 3 package.
