| Using Long Tail Searches as Blog Topic Inspiration | | 2008-08-22 13:07:51 | |
We've talked about this before, and it recently came up again, after reading Hubspot's blog about asking other people for inspiration. what to blog about.
The long tail is a valuable resource for blogging, you can find unusual keyword phrases, perhaps a local variation that you haven't optimised for (like our SEO Portsmouth example).
Measuring the size (length?) of the long tail is also a good metric for working out the success of your SEO campaigns, it is one of the KPIs that we use in-house to monitor the progress of a campaign over time.
So if you look at your long tail results, you should find something that you can blog about. It doesn't matter if you use long tail keywords from a PPC report or an SEO one, either can be used as a source.
So here are a few interesting ones I have picked out of our long tail - I especially like the question ones as they create something that is answerable in the blog format.

Also, and please may Big Cat Country not be your reminder, but it's Mothers Day today. This website and my passion for football wouldn't exist were it not for my Mother's persistence. You see, there's been a little bit of drama recently about bloggers and sports journalism , a meta discussion that I've avoided here at Big Cat Country. Frankly, there's nothing more boring than bloggers talking about blogging, and I refuse to put you through it.
One of the names that popped up in the discussion is legendary sports writer and author W.C. Heinz. The article I've posted here is called "Death of a Racehorse", which is one of the most fantastic pieces of writing ever published.
It's also very appropriate, with the events of the Kentucky Derby and the ill-fated Eight Belles.

The prospect of a pardon has become so sensitive inside the West Wing that top aides have been kept out of the loop, and even Bush friends have been told not to bring it up with the president. In any debate, officials expect Vice President Cheney to favor a pardon, while other aides worry about the political consequences of stepping into a case that stems from the origins of the Iraq war and renewing questions about the truthfulness of the Bush administration.
