    A Disastrous Translation
    2008-07-29 13:52:31
I was curious one time to find out how the Yahoo Babel translation works. I scanned over list of languages. I had one language in mind, the Chinese language. Since China has the largest population among countries and it’s showing a huge number of internet savvy. especially among its present generation, I thought then that it’s a good sign of setting my interest on Chinese traffic. I got one Chinese blog and to have a better understanding of the words and images, I sought the help of Yahoo Babel, but to my dismay, I got a disastrous translation.Chinese Grammar Construction After searching about Chinese language, I came to understand that Chinese grammar has a very different grammar construction with that of English. Chinese is considered to be a topic-prominent language where the topic of the sentence takes precedence in the sentence as compare to English which usually follow the normal subject-first word order. Ex. English – A car is parked in the front gate

Afghanistan: Death penalty call for man who spread Koran translation
    2008-06-24 10:05:00
An Afghan journalist accused of distributing an unacceptable translation of the Koran should be put to death, says former Prime Minister Ahmad Shah Ahmadzai. Ahmadzai, who ran in the 2004 presidential election against current President Hamid Karzai, told Adnkronos International (AKI) he supported the death penalty for Zalmay. "Today Afghanistan is full of vices. Several Afghan restaurants serve liquor, despite it being illegal and on top of it, such material is distributed," Ahmadzai told AKI. "I am in favour of his death."Muslim scholars in Afghanistan reportedly said that the new version of the Koran misinterpreted verses about alcohol, begging, homosexuality and adultery. They also complained that this version was not accompanied by the original version of the Koran in Arabic.Ghows, 50, is reportedy in jail after being accused of blasphemy and his lawyers say he risks the death penalty. He is expected to face charges in an Afghan court within the next week.

Do you remember the horror game released by Sony for its PlayStation 2 system a couple years ago...I didn't think so. Although the game featured some new ideas such as Enemy point of view camera(namely SightJacking), but it ultimately failed because of bad implementations of those ideas. Well, Sony thought the game deserves another chance, with better graphics, a new American character and perhaps with better working game mechanics(no sightjacking please). Well, with all things said, here is the premiere video of Siren: New Translation.

    ಭಾಗ್ಯದ ಬಳೆಗಾರ (Bhagyada Balegaara) Lyrics & Translation
    2008-01-12 23:02:00
Bhagyada Balegaara is a beautiful kannada poem written at a time when there was no telephones and emails for communication and people travelling from one place to another were the sole medium through whom news could pass from one place to another. In this folk song a women who is newly married asks the Bangle seller (Bangle seller used to keep travelling across the land selling his bangles) to visit her parents house and convey the message that she is fine. Bangle seller says he doesn't know where is her parents home or how to get there. The women describes in poetic lines how to get to her parents home. I found that lyrics and translation of this song is not available anywhere on net (atleast I couldn't search it out) so took trouble and writing on my own. Read on. ಭಾಗ್ಯದ ಬಳೆಗಾರ ಹೋಗಿ ಬಾ ನನ್ ತವರೀಗೇ, ಭಾಗ್ಯದ ಬಳೆಗಾರ ಹೋಗಿ ಬಾ ನನ್ ತವರೀಗೇ, ಭಾಗ್ಯದ ಬಳೆಗಾರ ಹೋಗಿ ಬಾ ನನ್ ತವರೀಗೇ,ಭಾಗ್ಯದ ಬಳೆಗಾರ ಹೋಗಿ ಬಾ ನನ್ ತವರೀಗೇ, Woman: Bhagyada baLegaara hOgi baa nan tavarige (Dear Bangle seller, please go to my hometown.) ನಿನ್ನ ತವರೂರ, ನಾನೇನು ಬಲ್ಲೆನು,(2) ಗೊತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ ಎನಗೆ, ಗುರಿಯಿಲ್ಲ ಎಲೆಬಾಲೆ,(2) ತೋರಿಸು ಬಾರೇ ತವರೂರಾ..Bangle seller:Ninna tavaroora naanEnu ballenu, goththilla nanage, guriyilla ele baale, tOrisu ninna tavaroora (How am I supposed to know which is your parents' home? How to set your translation rates by using objective information
    2007-12-29 12:36:06
Copyright 2007 by Corinne McKay Setting your translation rates Possibly the most anxiety-provoking aspect of launching your translation business is deciding how much to charge. Charge too much and you'll be priced out of the market; charge too little and you'll be working overtime just to make ends meet. The easiest way to remove the anxiety from this decision is to gather some objective data such as how much money you would like to make, and how much it will cost you to run your business. As we've discussed before, every language combination and specialization has a range of rates; for example, translators of Asian languages into English will almost invariably earn more than translators of European languages. In addition, how much you need to charge depends on your cost of living. An English to Spanish translator living in rural Mexico can afford to work for much less money than his or her colleague who lives in Manhattan. Some translators get very angry about these global outsourci

How to find your first translation clients?
    2007-12-28 13:59:55
Copyright 2006 by Corinne McKay.Where to begin? I receive a lot of inquiries from people who would like to become translators, and most of these e-mails have something to do with finding those first few elusive translation clients. If you ask 100 translators how they got started in the business, you'll probably get at least 50 different answers. Some picked up the phone and started cold-calling, some turned an old business connection into a client, some volunteered, some went back to school, some were just in the right place at the right time. Following are some tips on how to break into the translation industry, depending on your interests and level of experience. As a freelance translator, your two basic categories of clients are translation agencies, companies that serve as a middleman between an end client and various freelance translators, and direct clients, where you work directly for the translation buyer with no middleman involved. Each of these approaches has its benefits a

    Formula 1 - Lost In Translation ?
    2007-09-01 05:27:00
Few days ago I published a post "Interesting Quote From Fernando Alonso On His Future". One reader, unfortunately Anonymous, left not too happy comment on the accuracy of the article. I have no intentions to make up stories or distort the facts, so I am very happy that this reader engaged in the constructive discussion with me and he gave me the link to the original Spanish article. This is the Anonymous reader of this blog had to comment:Here you have the link, if you keep the first sentence it is close to what English speaking media says "No sé donde voy a correr el año que viene. Es imposible saberlo. Lo único que sé es que tengo contrato con McLaren y que aquí sí que puedo correr"But close to the end you have this "Tengo contrato con McLaren y aquí voy a correr, si no pasa nada raro. Es lo mismo que la guerra entre nosotros dos. Está bien escribir todo acerca de a ver adonde puedo ir, hacer encuestas y todo esto. Pero a día de hoy tengo contrato aquí y voy a correr aquí.

    English Translation
    2007-05-28 06:02:25
My apologies ahead of time to those who use the translator in the sidebar to read this site in a language other than English. Today’s post will probably seem like gibberish to you. Not that it doesn’t happen most days anyway. I love Babelfish. It’s quite handy for communicating with someone in their own language, even if you don’t speak or read it. I found Hamlet Hamster when he linked to my site. So I posted a video I found there on Neatorama. He thanked me, so I wanted to leave a comment. In German. This is the comment: It was my pleasure! If you link to me, you become a source. Babelfish gave me this: Es war mein Vergnügen! Wenn Sie mit mir verbinden, können Sie hervorquellen werden meine Quelle. After posting, I re-translated that back to English: It was my pleasure! If you connect with me, know you will out-pour my source. That now sounds like a pickup line. Oh well. The Smiley Interv

What’s theuse of old and frozen thought? I wanta howling hurt. This is not a treasurywhere gold is stored; this is for copper. We alchemists look for talent thatcan heat up and change. What do you find out if you search for a translation of a German word ?
    2007-05-03 16:59:45
After Ben asked here if “square” and “Spießer” have the same meaning, I asked some online translation services. The translation of the German term “Spießer” revealed following: I present the not-winners of the day for this specific term (I do not use term loser with purpose): IATE (result) Google Translator (result) and Babelfish (result) (or could be said following [...]
