    Rumble: Translator of Nightmares
    2008-05-24 16:53:54
I read hundreds of articles and blog entries about Darfur. Few have impacted me as much as this article, covering a book, "The Translator: A Tribesman's Memoir of Darfur" written by Daoud Hari.Daoud Hari is a Dafur tribes man who assisted journalists travelling in his region as a translator. A translator of horror stories.Sleepless during nights of exile in Chad, Daoud Hari stared at cracks in his room's mud walls. The lines formed random shapes that reminded him of drawings from thousands of years ago -- of horned beasts, of women, men and children. He had seen them in the cool mountain caves of Darfur, where he played as a boy. They triggered an urge to sketch scenes of the savagery and starvation he had witnessed in the once-tranquil lands of his childhood.During those uneasy nights, he picked up pencil and paper to turn his torment into tolerable numbness. He drew the woman who had hanged herself from a tree with her shawl because she could not feed her children. Career as a translator
    2008-04-08 23:10:00
English has been the de facto standard for business executives the world over for many decades now. However due to the rise of Asian giants like China, Japan and India this is set to change. Coupled with globalisation and adoption of the internet in all spheres of life this change is further likely to accelerate.A quick look at the internet users shows that only 36.5 per cent of user demand English as the medium of communication on the information highway in 2005! While no recent statistics are available the author is fairly confident that internet would have only gotten better for non-English speakers in the meantime.Which language pairs must I choose?A quick look at the report from Google further strengthens the argument that this will be a century where CJK (Chinese, Japanese, Korean) and FIGS (French, Italian, German, Spanish) dominate the internet in general and business communications specifically.Opportunity for Indian linguistsThe emergence of newer centres of "language gravit

    Certified translator in the US?
    2008-01-02 00:23:49
In the US, there is not currently a certification required to be a translator or interpreter. In the US, a translator does not need to be “certified” in order to provide a “certified translation. If you want a certified translation, you can get your statement translated and signed by a translator and see a Notary Public to notarize it. Many translators and interpreters start their business by submitting their resumes and sample of their work to several employment agencies, marketing their business in different ways in order to be known and to build a list of clients. Some translators have degree in foreign languages, some have certification, others have overseas work experiences ... Translators and interpreters have different backgrounds, different experiences, different paths ...In America, contrary to some other countries, you don't have to be certified in order to be a translator and an interpreter. There are many excellent, experienced translators who are not accredited or cer

Getting Started as a Freelance Translator
    2007-12-21 20:17:56
by Corinne McKayBackgroundI became a translator via a series of happy accidents. After taking French in school since seventh grade, I studied abroad at the University of Grenoble, France, for my junior year of college. There, a professor recommended me for a part-time job as a trainee translator at the University's graduate school of business. This ended up involving work on an international marketing textbook that was subsequently published by Prentice-Hall. Back in the U.S., I taught high school French for 8 years, did a few translations on the side when people asked me, and earned an M.A. in French from Boston College. After relocating to Colorado and having a child, I wanted to find a career that would allow me to use French and work from home, so I decided to try to make a go as a professional translator. Several years later, I'm certified by the American Translators Association and happily employed by a growing list of regular clients. I hope that these tips will be helpful to as
