| Oak Tree Recovers Via Reiki | | 2008-08-19 11:48:00 | | It's true! Milton Keynes Today reports that an ailing city centre oak tree that responded to no other therapies is showing signs of health after a group of area healers started giving it some Reiki. According to the paper, "The once-mighty oak's decline had left experts stumped for months. They had tried a remarkable catalogue of remedies ranging from tonics and massage to biopsies and even amputation of branches. But nothing failed to stop the tree shedding its leaves and looking more wilted by the day."One local landscaper came, xrayed the tree and said that the problem could be overwatering (which has killed many of my houseplants) or root compression. They will be donating a Terraventing treatment, where they blast air around the roots to create more space. The other people who got involved were a group of local Reiki healers who "held a mass healing session to channel positive energy into its depleted branches. In the rain forest of Malaysia, scientists have found a small mammal, closely related to primates, whose major source of food is a type of beer.""...they have one favorite food source: the bertam palm, whose flowers have a very strong and distinctive smell. "They smell like a brewery," Weins says.In fact, the flower buds function as brewing chambers — they have been invaded by previously unknown species of yeast, which ferment the nectar into frothy alcohol."The maximum alcohol concentration that we recorded was 3.8 percent," Weins says. | Saving the Butternut Tree | | 2008-07-16 21:26:41 | | Ah, the blueberry fields of Maine. I've mentioned how I did seasonal work raking blueberries, and let me tell you, blueberries never taste as good as they do those first moments right off the bush. But I've never mentioned the butternut trees that lined two sides of the fields.I must have gathered a hundred pounds of butternuts in small batches for the weeks I worked in the fields. The nut is shaped like a walnut, and much more segmented on the inside, but incredibly flavorful and buttery, making it worth the effort.I haven't had a butternut since I left Maine. About five years ago, I did a search for butternuts and was dismayed by what I discovered. Butternuts, actually Black Walnuts, are being decimated by a fungus that has wiped out 90% of all butternut trees in the Midwest and Ontario. Forest researchers in Vermont monitored 1,269 butternuts; in 1993 92% were infected and 12% were dead. In 2000, 96% were infected and 41% were dead. Most of us would never know if a particular s | | By: Michaelann Land | | |

| Plant A Tree! | | 2008-06-28 17:20:56 | | When we built the new house the entire lot, all 1.3 acres was clear cut to make way for construction. The biggest reason we cut the entire lot was to level the lot so it was more usable. Fortunately we were able to transplant six large trees. We transplanted one oak tree and five maple trees. I've been amazed that all six trees survived the transplanting considering we did it with an excavator instead of a tree spade. The trees range in size from 3" diameter to 8" diameter.Needless to say six trees are a far cry from the 75 or 80 that were cut down on our lot. So we've been steadily planting new trees around the property. One great way to get some really nice trees is to join the National Arbor Day Foundation. When you join the National Arbor Day Foundation you receive 10 free trees! The cool thing is they have over 200 popular landscaping trees in stock to choose from. So if you're in the market for some new trees and you'd like to help support a great organization then check out the | | By: Helpful Advice for Home Construction Improvement | | |

| Geranium and Smoke Tree – Ruby Tuesday | | 2008-06-10 05:11:45 | | Geranium and Smoke Tree – Ruby TuesdayDoes this Ivy leafed Geranium (Pelargonium peltatum) count as red? You would think that someone who deals with colors professionally might be a little more sure of which color is which. We have been using more Geraniums at work and they continue to amaze me with the different colors and styles available. This was taken at a nursery and I should have bought a couple because the flower was beautiful. This second photo is a Smoke Tree (Cotinus coggygria). Most often they are referred to as Purple Smoke Tree but it is really a shrub. They always make a nice splash of color in the garden and while the ‘smoke’ is nice the foliage is the main show. Every couple of years I hard prune mine to stimulate new color and keep them a little smaller. They are easy to cultivate and will grow on a variety of soils. They are a member of the Cashew Family (Anacardiaceae) something I didn’t know.Sorry for such a short post but the heat has been getting to me a l | | By: Digital Flower Pictures.com | | |

| Arbor Day Look at the Archives: Hawaii's Exceptional Tree Deduction | | 2008-04-24 23:00:00 | | Today is Arbor Day. And to celebrate, we look back at the Tax Policy Blog archives at a post two years ago on one of the wackiest tax laws in the United States: Hawaii's Exceptional Tree Deduction. From former T.F. economist Curtis Dubay: To mark this occasion we bring to you an amusing personal income tax deduction from Hawaii. The ‘exceptional tree’ deduction is as follows, from the Hawaii Personal Income Tax Instructions:You may deduct up to $3,000 per exceptional tree for qualified expenditures you made during the taxable year to maintain the tree on your private property. The tree must be designated as an exceptional tree by the local county arborist advisory committee under chapter 58, HRS. Qualified expenditures are those expenses you incurred to maintain the exceptional tree (excluding interest) that are deemed “reasonably necessary” by a certified arborist. No deduction is allowed in more than one taxable year out of every three consecutive taxable years | | By: Tax Policy Blog | | |

| C-program to check whether a binary tree is a Binary search tree | | 2008-04-23 08:13:17 | | Write a C program to check if a given binary tree is a binary search tree or not?Solution:If the given binary tree is a Binary search tree, then the inorder traversal should output the elements in increasing order. We make use of this property of inorder traversal to check whether the given binary tree is a BST or not.We make note of the latest element that could have been printed and compare it with the current element.Given below is a C function to check it.bool flag=true;void inorder(tree T,int *lastprinted){if(T==NULL){printf("the tree is empty .Hence, it is a BST\n");}else{if(T->left!=NULL){ inorder(T->left,lastprinted);}if(T->data > *lastprinted){ *lastprinted=T->data;}else{ printf("the given binary tree is not a BST\n"); flag=false; exit(0);}inorder(T->right,lastprinted);}}Now check the value of flag to say whether it is a BST or not.If it is not then it is already taken care by the code. I have always wanted to grow one but haven’t gotten around to actually buying one. Long thin burgundy leaves and peaches follow these flowers in the summer. It is hardy to USDA Zone 5 and grows well in containers. I shot this at the nursery and should of bought the tree.Yesterday when I got home from work I noticed my dog (Molly) was lethargic and a bit clumsy. It got worse after a little awhile and by the time I decided to go to the vet she couldn’t walk. We know she has cancer and all the signs were pointing to a bleeding tumor, as her gums were ashen white.I got her to the Vet and lucky he was working late. A quick abdominal tap and blood count test confirmed our fears. Molly looked liked she was on her deathbed. Karen and I were serious contemplating a very difficult decision. | Florals and Home Decor Eucalyptus Tree Store Nashville Indiana | | 2008-04-07 13:08:00 | | Yesterday, my husband and I drove to Nashville, Indiana as we planned to stay there just 1 night to stay in bed and breakfast. Today, we did walk around the town and did some shopping and we stopped by one of great store in Nashville, Indiana is “Eucalyptus Tree” and even in trip advisor site it has good review. I was walking around inside that store while my husband relaxing and eating his snacks as they sell also coffee, tea and pastries. I was impressed at it has wide selections of great home décor, like figurine, frames, chimes, candles, flowers and much more. In addition, they have even nice handcrafted jewelries; they have also variety of hats, shoes, etc. I suppose to buy some but I was thinking I cannot really carry a lot of stuff going back in Florida and I just have decided to buy one of their hats. You can see the pictures here inside in the store which has a lot of home decors and other stuff. | | By: My Trails In Life | | |

| Tree Fruit. | | 2008-03-31 14:25:00 | | The very authoritative British journalist and broadcaster Richard Dimbleby hosted the very authoritative current affairs program Panorama in the 1950’s - it was, naturally, on the BBC – and you cant (or couldn’t, in the 50’s) get any more authoritative than the BBC. On this date in 1957 he reported on the springtime harvest of spaghetti in Switzerland (not such vast spaghetti plantations as in Italy). He described how the growers always had an anxious time in March for fear of frost, which harmed the flavour of the crop, but that thankfully the dreaded ‘spaghetti weevil’ had all but disappeared. He discussed the fact that each strand of spaghetti grew to the same length each year thanks to intense cultivation by growers over many generations. He even showed pictures of the crop being harvested, and the spaghetti strands being laid out to dry. Many viewers were most intrigued by the story of something that was only familiar to them in cans: some rang in to ask where they mi | | By: The Old Foodie | | |

| Moon behind a Tree - Sky Watch Friday | | 2008-03-27 16:12:00 | | Full Moon behind a Tree (Eucalyptus)Sky Watch FridayFor some reason, whenever it came around to Sky Watch Friday, I automatically thought of a day-time sky. It never occurred to me until now that a moon landscape is actually a "Sky Watch" photo as well! So, today I have this photo I took the other night of a full Moon behind my gum tree (see my other moon / tree silhouette). I find the layer of cloud interesting in this picture - it serves to split the picture into two parts horizontally, while the tree splits the picture vertically. Not exactly the rule of thirds - maybe more like the rule of fourths! This photo taken with the Fujifilm S9600 digital camera.

| The Peasant and the Apple Tree | | 2008-02-12 03:49:00 | | A peasant had an apple tree growing in his garden, which bore no fruit, but merely served to provide a shelter from the heat for the sparrows and grasshoppers which sat and chirped in its branches. Disappointed at its barrenness he determined to cut it down, and went and fetched his ax for the purpose. But when the sparrows and the grasshoppers saw what he was about to do, they begged him to spare it, and said to him, "If you destroy the tree we shall have to seek shelter elsewhere, and you will no longer have our merry chirping to enliven your work in the garden." He, however, refused to listen to them, and set to work with a will to cut through the trunk. A few strokes showed that it was hollow inside and contained a swarm of bees and a large store of honey. Delighted with his find he threw down his ax, saying, "The old tree is worth keeping after all." Moral: Utility is most men's test of worth. | | By: Geeks Undercover | | |

| The Glory of the Heavens - Clouds and Tree - Sky Watch Friday | | 2008-02-07 04:13:00 | | Clouds and a Tree in Shadow - Sky Watch FridayI got this shot purely by chance one day. I was outside with the camera getting some nature photos, when I happened to glance up and see this stunning cloud formation aligned perfectly with the top of a gum tree. Had I gone a few steps further in any direction, this scene wouldn't have been as exceptional, as the tree needed to be in just the right position relative to the clouds for this shot to work. As it turned out, I was able to quickly snap this picture. The composition of this shot is almost the inverse of Rembrandt's famous style, where he uses small areas of bright light to draw attention to important areas of the painting. In this photo, the large dark area occupied by the tree draws your attention, and then you notice the bright white cloud in the opposite corner. Then a trailing wisp of cloud brings your attention back in circle to the right, where the dark tree is.Another interesting aspect of this photo is the many different la | | By: David's Nature Photography Gallery | | |

Among all the weird designs around, finally something original! I also liked today's winner, "Snakey Shaky Heart". Nice warm colors and so appropriate for Valentine's (I wouldn't expect anything less from DBH for this occasion).
