What is surprising is the NHTSA's stubborn attitude about accepting outside suggestions. The proposal is simple enough; the IIHS recommends that trucks and cars use the same bumper standards for greater crash compatibility. Being cynical and following the money does lead one back to the fact that such a change would save the insurance industry a large sum, but so what? The seller, for his part, bills it as a "Cruck." With the careful adaptation of a Datsun Pickup liftgate, this cut and restyled 1989 Prelude Si was possibly a prelude to the atrocity wonder that would eventually be known as the Honda Ridgeline. It is said to feature a four-cylinder with an automatic, and able to get 38 mpg. Thank goodness it "was built under professional supervision of experienced body technicians," as we'd hate to think that any average schmo cut and pasted this Prelude. The work must be halfway decent, as it serves as daily transport for the seller and still features such luxuries as "power windows, sunroof, heat and a/c, cd player, power steering and functional tailgate." As it sits it's a fitting testament to ingenuity and another answer to a question nobody asked. Only $2,500 though. Thanks for the tip, Tom!

Those shopping for an SUV will even get an extra grand. | Ford to make less vehicles in 2008: more cars, fewer trucks | | 2008-05-24 08:02:00 | | Ford issued a press release this morning detailing its plans for the remainder of 2008, and considering the current price of gasoline, weak U.S. economy and rising cost of raw materials, the changes are exactly what you'd expect. Ford will now be producing 690,000 vehicles during the remainder of this year's second quarter, down 20,000 units from its previous estimate and 15% below its total for Q2 2007. Production levels in Q3 will fall to between 510-540,000 units in Q3 2008 (down 15-20% from Q3 2007) and between 590-630,000 units in Q4 2008 (down 2-8% from Q4 2007).Though it will be producing fewer units overall, Ford will increase production of hot-selling cars and CUVs like the Focus, Edge and Escape, Mercury Milan and Mariner, and Lincoln MKZ and MKX. Production of trucks and SUVs, however, will drop sharply because potential customers are walking away from these relative gas-guzzlers in droves. According to the NHTSA, about 605,000 2005 and 2006 model year Ford F150 and Lincoln Mark LT trucks equipped with the 3-valve 5.4-liter V8 will receive a hose replacement free of charge. The problem hose supplies the brake booster with engine vacuum, and could swell over time and eventually become disconnected. While the hydraulic braking system will function without the power assist, pedal effort will be significantly increased, and if drivers are taken off-guard by the problem an accident could occur. Ford will start notifying owners in June, and the recall campaign will kick off in July. According to FoMoCo, there have been 11 minor accidents related to the issue. With rising fuel prices and growing environmental concerns, most automakers are beginning to offer more compact cars, smaller engines, and crossover SUVs that are more like wagons and less like trucks. One segment that hasn't seen too much downsizing so far is the pickup truck market. But that might be about to change, says Chrysler's Jim Press. Earlier this month at a roundtable meeting with journalists, Mr. Press said he sees an emerging market for "very small, very fuel efficient" pickups, according to PickupTruck.com. Press joined Chrysler in September 2007, after working for 37 years at Toyota. His former employer used the Detroit auto show this year to roll out the small A-BAT concept truck, while American automakers were busy launching their largest trucks — the 2009 Dodge Ram and 2009 Ford F-150. In recent years, we can think of only one compact pickup from a Chrysler brand — the Dodge M80 Concept (pictured). If Mr. Press gets his way, might we see a vehicle like this produced in the coming years?
