    Carpal Tunnel Surgery
    2008-08-15 21:46:00
Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) or median neuropathy at the wrist is a medical condition in which the median nerve is compressed at the wrist, leading to pain, paresthesias, and muscle weakness in the forearm and hand. A form of compressive neuropathy, CTS is more common in women than it is in men and has a peak incidence around age 42, though it can occur at any age. The lifetime risk for CTS is around 10% of the adult population. Most cases of CTS are idiopathic (without known cause). Repetitive activities are often blamed for the development of CTS along with several other possible causes. However, the correlation is often unclear. It is a multi-faceted problem and can therefore be challenging to treat. Still, there are a multitude of possible treatments: treating any possible underlying disease or condition, immobilizing braces, prioritizing hand activities, and ergonomics. Recent studies have shown that medications have not been able to modify the extent of the disease. Ultimately, car

Then you might have a condition called Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. This is a medical condition in which the median nerve is compressed at the wrist, leading to pain, weakness, and numbness on the forearm and the hand. There is no known cause for this condition although it is somewhat attributed to excessive hand use or activity. So if you're one of those people who rely on their hands too much to make a living, or if you're a blogger who loves to spend long hours in front of the computer blogging about life, events, or whatever, then you're at risk! There has been much discussion as to the most effective treatment for CTS. CTS is a problem that is challenging to treat from a doctor's perspective. Starting therapy early is associated with improved long-term results. But why wait to have the condition when we can all prevent it. They say that prevention

Opinion: More than a tunnel to Morocco...
    2008-08-07 23:53:00
Mohammad el-Ashab, writing in Al Hayat, takes a look at the proposed tunnel between Spain and Morocco and says it is going to be far more than just a bridge between the continents - it will be an opportunity for Arab league and the Maghreb Union to build bridges of their own.A Moroccan Bridge to… Andalusia!By Mohammad el-Ashab The descendants of Moroccan general Tariq Ibn Ziyad and Spanish King Felipe V are trying to once again bridge the gap between the two continents. What nature has achieved with volcanic eruptions, soil erosion and the sea extended between Europe and Africa, humankind now seeks to restore, by binding the branches to the roots.Five centuries ago, Christopher Columbus sailed from Spain across the Atlantic to discover America. At around the same time, Moroccan geographer Al-Sharif Al-Idrisi advocated the spherical shape of the earth. It is paradoxical that Al-Idrisi lived in the city of Ceuta in Northern Morocco, today under Spanish occupation.Today, it looks as

Magnificient Guoliang Tunnel Road in China
    2008-07-07 03:13:00
Road that does not tolerate any mistakesHave you seen dangerous roads? How dangerous it could be? The are roads that imperil the lives of motorists, or just make it really miserable. Below are the roads that did not quite make the list, but continued to pop up in conversations around the world. It may not"deadly" as such, but certainly require a keen concentration on driving, as the rock walls in many of them are not known to be a forgiving substance. Whoah!!!Hoho!Just see that cliff...Looks like a cave to me..The road shown here is the Guoliang Tunnel in Taihang mountains (China). It has been built by villagers themselves, which is an inspiring story in itself:"Before 1972, the path chiseled into the rock used to be the only access linkingthe village with the outside world. Then the villagers decided to dig a tunnel through the rocky cliff. Led by Shen Mingxin, head of the village, they sold goats and herbs to buy hammers and steel tools. Thirteen strong villagers began the project. I

World's longest undersea tunnel--The Seikan Tunnel
    2008-06-17 12:26:00
The Seikan Tunnel is a 53.85 km (33.49 mile) railway tunnel in Japan, with a 23.3 km (14.5 mile) portion under the seabed. It is the longest undersea tunnel in the world. It travels beneath the Tsugaru Strait — connecting Aomori Prefecture on the Japanese island of Honshū and the island of Hokkaidō — as part of the Kaikyo Line of Hokkaido Railway Company. Although it is the longest traffic (railway or road) tunnel in the world, faster and cheaper air travel has left the Seikan Tunnel comparatively underused. Its claim to the record will be taken when the Gotthard Base Tunnel, another railroad tunnel, is completed around 2018.In 1954, a typhoon sank five ferry boats in Japan's Tsugaru Strait and killed 1,430 people. In response to public outrage, the Japanese government searched for a safer way to cross the dangerous strait. With such unpredictable weather conditions, engineers agreed that a bridge would be too risky to build. A tunnel seemed a perfect solution. Ten years later,

Are you a keen secret holder? or some sort confidante? Do you feel the burden of knowing things others ought not to know? Well, well, this sort of thing is Foolish Boy's forte, but the real big problem is that, lately, many people had been coming and going, just to express their secrets to Foolish Boy. Being a good listener and adviser can be a bad thing sometimes, especially if there are too many people to listen to and too little space to place the "knowledge". With each passing day, holding on to the zippers on his big mouth, the Foolish Boy keep doing his daily routine, fitting in each time a mishap occurred. He felt the pressure of keeping all the "vital" information to himself. If he wanted to make a havoc of the school, he would been able to do so, with just little whispers here and there. But, little did they knew, their secrets/problems keeper had the biggest problem of all, even bigger what they had been telling him.Once, someone did asked the Foolish boy, "You had been heari

There's Light at the End of the Tunnel pt.4
    2008-05-13 01:26:32
"The Locus of the Circle can be determined in many ways..." was echoing inside the small room. The Foolish Boy stared blankly at the white board, while his teacher, which was also as round as the drawing on the board, was explaining to the whole class about Circles. The Foolish Boy wasn't really interested in numbers, let alone calculations and formulas. To him, numbers couldn't do the job of explaining something which requires more of the emotional touch. Numbers can't talk. Nor it can express your feelings. Lucky him, he was not the only one who disliked maths. Some of the classmates were also hating it as much the Foolish Boy did. Every time, when it came to the Maths class, the Foolish Boy would put on his half-spirited face on, to mention the class, how he disliked Maths so much. He was more towards, language, verbal and texts. What could be the best way to express your feelings other than pencils and papers? It was, after all, the beginning for another Social Link between the Fool

    2008-04-27 10:39:33
It was the school mid term holidays, when the Foolish Boy decided to really stay in the school for the rest of his schooling days. What had made him to decide such an important decision? After all, the Foolish Boy disliked the school as much as he disliked the Crowd in there. He never ever despised anyone or anything as much as he disliked the school, not since his hatred for the idea of people who are born in such ways are destined to do such ways. It's bare naked ridiculous. How could you believe in such ways? Well, back on to the main story, the Foolish Boy made up his decision mostly based on one most influential person recently in his life. It was all thanks to the Cool Guy, which had changed his perception towards the Crowd forever. But at the same time, he had already made lots of friends already. The Laughter boy was with him from the start, joined by the Happy Boy, and later by the Talkative Boy, The Loud Boy, The Flexi Boy, and The Bigger Boy and not to mention some of the fr

He can't keep it down, he needs to know when his family is gonna be there. Never mind that now though, since the Foolish boy needed to attend the Students' Orientation. The Foolish boy was feeling afraid this time, since he is going to meet some new people that he doesn't know at all. Why did this has to happen to the Foolish Boy? Poor fellow. Pity fellow. Mustering all the courage he barely had left, the Foolish Boy braved trough the crowd and into the Grand Hall of the school. There, he spotted his friend, th

"I never blamed anyone, why should you?" a good friend of mine spoke. Those words hit me hard on the face and my alter ego that I kept using to pretend I'm just okay."Well, I...had to blame someone..." my words clogged at the end of my throat.I'm ashamed of myself and my deeds to others while I'm still in my school days. I'm a big idiot. The biggest idiot for letting my anger taking control of me, for letting my rage goes uncontrollably, for letting my head set on thinking that it was "him"(someone who used to be my greatest strength to go on with hostel life) to be blamed, and for letting my egos doing all the unwanted attention worth of drama. Flashbacks came and it played inside my inner theater of memories. It had proven so much that I was partly to be blamed as well. I think real deep of what my friend had asked me. He's right. Why would I blame someone who's never really a factor in my fears, who's never been the main character of my drama, and who's I never even bothered before I

Some Light at End of the Economic Tunnel
    2008-04-07 11:19:00
by Suze OrmanI think it's quite possible that things are just a little better than they were a month or two ago.Justifiable PessimismI know that's not what many of you are thinking -- everything seems to be moving in the wrong direction. The price of oil and basic commodities like wheat are way up (any pizza fan knows this), while the value of the dollar, our homes, and our stock investments is falling. It's so bad that we're worrying whether our money is safe in our banks and brokerage accounts. No wonder a recent survey of consumer expectations about what's on the financial horizon registered a low confidence score not seen since 1973.I understand that many of you are pessimistic about the future. You have good reason to be. But I think some recent events qualify as at least a glimmer of hope in what has been a very dark start to 2008.Moving Away from Doom and GloomAt the start of March I was firmly in the doom-and-gloom camp. Bush, Manmohan, Aishwarya Rai and Sonia are traveling in a train. The train goes through tunnel and it gets completely dark. Suddenly there is a kissing sound and then a slap! The train comes out of the tunnel. The women and Manmohan are sitting there looking perplexed. Bush is bent over holding his face, which is red from an apparent slap. All of them remain diplomatic and nobody says anything.Sonia is thinking: "These Americans are all crazy after Aishwarya. Bush must have tried to kiss her in the tunnel. Very proper that she slapped him."Aishwarya is thinking: "Bush must have tried to kiss me but kissed Sonia instead and got slapped."Bush is thinking: "Damn it. Manmohan must have tried to kiss Aishwarya. She might have thought it was me and slapped me."Manmohan is thinking: "If this train goes through another tunnel I will make another kissing sound and slap Bush again!!"

    Burro Schmidt Tunnel
    2007-12-14 18:46:00
Burro Schimidt labored for thirty two years digging the 2000 foot tunnel through Copper Mountain. His dream was to haul ore through the tunnel to the smelter in Mojave. Before the tunnel was finished a rail line extended from Mojave making the tunnel obsolete. The Burro Schmidt Tunnel is listed on National Register of Historic Places and is located in Kern County, California near Garlock. GPS 35°24.62′N, 117°52.55′W. Directions to Burro Schmidt’s Tunnel and the cabins. Drive about nine miles up a dirt road that intersects Highway 14 north of Red Rock Canyon State Park, about 35 miles north of the community of Mojave. Watch closely there is a sign pointing out the start of the dirt road. High clearance vehicles recommended.

Austria, Italy agree on funding for railway tunnel through Alps
    2007-07-10 23:59:00
The agreement was included in a memorandum of understanding signed by the Austrian transportation minister, Werner Faymann, and his Italian counterpart, Antonio Di Pietro. The memorandum also foresees 2022 as a completion date. The Brenner Base Tunnel will have a length of about 56 kilometers (35 miles) — or 62 kilometers (39 miles) including a detour around the Austrian city of Innsbruck — and will link the north of the continent to its Mediterranean south.

Is There Any Light At the End of the Tunnel?
    2007-07-01 22:51:00
The topic below was originally posted on my blog, the Intrepid Liberal Journal as well as the the Independent Bloggers Alliance. Typically, I’m not one to post rants. It’s just not my style. Instead I enjoy reading the skilled rants of others. Maryscott O’Connor’s rants on My Left Wing for example are a touchstone for my own emotions about the state of the world. Nobody cuts to the chase like Maryscott.Expand the whole post.Another who inspires me is Bob Higgins of Worldwide Sawdust. There is an old cliché that laughing is better than crying and Bob has the singular ability to help me laugh at the absurdity we’re surrounded by on a daily basis. When it comes to rants I leave it to the professionals and stick to my strengths. Yet today I’m compelled to express my despair and feeling of utter helplessness. The Supreme Court’s recent rulings were a kick in the groin.Granted, these rulings are hardly a surprise.
