| | Celtel Uganda licence to be renewed | | 2008-03-03 00:22:14 | | THE Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has okayed the renewal of the Celtel’s licence that will expire in September, the UCC executive director, Dr. Patrick Masambu, has said.“The UCC intends to recommend to the information and communications technology minister to grant an extension of Celtel’s licence under the new licensing regime unless there are valid objections to the proposed extension,” Masambu said. He said under the new framework, Celtel would be given two licences that include the Public Infrastructure Provider Licence for 15 years, which is renewable for another five years.“The second is the Public Service Provider Licence for a five-year term and it is also renewable subject to successful compliance with the licence provisions,” Masambu said at a public hearing about the renewal of the licence at Hotel Africana in Kampala. | | Uganda Safari Featuring highest Number of Primates in Africa | | 2007-11-23 11:54:00 | | With a belief by some historians that human kind started and evolved in East Africa, it’s not surprising that Uganda, a destination in this region is prominent for being a habitat to the great primates.By description, Primates share with humans, flexible arms and legs, skilled fingers (and sometimes toes), and relatively big brains. The many species of apes, monkeys, and lemurs are among the primates. The chimpanzee for example is known for its being the closest living relative to humans. Half of the remaining Mountain gorillas in the world can only be seen in Uganda. Uganda, besides the other East African countries has grown into a well recognized safari destination for tourists because of its moist climate and the enormous amount of rich, dense forests, that have made it a home to these species. Over 300 mammals, 20 of which are primates, both diurnal and nocturnal have been recorded and can be traced on a tour to Uganda through the Uganda safari companies. Uganda’s primate inhabited forests are under threat of destruction, yet a number of species living in tropical forests is much higher than elsewhere making it hard for the primates to survive. A holiday to Uganda will give you an opportunity to see the great apes, chimpanzees, mountain gorillas and different species of monkeys. Most rare of the primate is the mountain gorilla which inhabits Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga National Park in southwestern Uganda. Thousands of visitors travel to Uganda on Gorilla Safaris for a stunning experience with the Gorillas, the largest of all the primates. The Chimpanzees, slightly smaller in size share 98% of human’s DNA and are found to be incredibly intelligent with the ability to understand and peak sign language. They inhabit most forest in western Uganda. You will have a chance to associate with them if you take a Uganda tour to Kibale National Park, Kuniyo Pabidi forest site near Murchison Falls National Park, as well as Ngamba Island chimpanzee S | | By: The Professional Travellers | | |

| | | | Struggling Flower Industry in Uganda | | 2007-07-21 07:00:00 | | All AfricaUganda's flower industry needs government incentives and preferential European Union (EU) access to succeed, say members of the east African nation's floricultural sector.
Uganda is Africa's fifth-largest flower exporter, dealing solely in roses and chrysanthemum cuttings. The industry earns over 30 million dollars annually in revenue from over 7,500 metric tons of exported flowers. Some 142 hectares of roses and 32 hectares of chrysanthemum cuttings are currently under production... | | By: The Flower Expert - Flowers Encyclopedia
| | Improving Soil, and Saving Money, in Eastern Uganda | | 2007-06-04 04:18:00 | | DownloadThis is the VOA Special English Agriculture Report.Sorghum farmers in eastern Uganda, working with scientists, have tested some lower-cost ways to improve their soil. Little rain and poor soil fertility are problems in that area, as in other parts of southern Africa. Experts from the Kawanda Research Institute in Uganda and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in the United States did the research. They say much of the soil lacks enough phosphorus and nitrogen. But for many small farmers, the cost of treating the soil is more than they earn from their crops.SorghumSo the researchers suggest five methods that could decrease costs and increase production of sorghum. Sorghum is an important food grain in southern Africa. The methods involve soil fertility management as well as reduced tillage. Tilling is breaking up and turning the soil to prepare the ground for planting. They say one way to renew the soil is to use a plant called mucuna. Mucuna is a herbaceous vegetable. Its seeds can | | By: Giang Day Truc Tuyen - Teaching Online | | |

| | Uganda Targets $200 Million in Flower Exports | | 2007-01-10 07:00:00 | | All Africa
Earnings from Uganda's flower industry are set to double in the next five years. Currently, the industry produces 7,300 tonnes worth US$65 million for export annually. But officials in the floriculture sector say for the industry to expand and more than double, more local and foreign investors are needed to give this boost.
But luring these investors to Uganda will only depend on how fast the government can act on promises of providing support and incentives to the industry. Just last year, Uganda lost $30 million in flower investments to Ethiopia... | | By: The Flower Expert - Flowers Encyclopedia
