Unemployment, crime are HIV fodder in Northeast India
    2008-07-03 11:01:00
New Delhi: Northeast India generally brings to mind two diametrically opposite images — the first, a picturesque region abundant in forest and rivers, and the second, a terrain bludgeoned by bullets, bombs and bloodshed. Geographically knitted to the mainland by a slender land chain called the Chicken’s Neck, the northeast has always remained a politically isolated mass. Inhabited by heterogeneous tribes and sub-tribes of Aryan and Mongoloid origins, the region has been rocked for decades by insurgency, with several terrorist groups either demanding sovereignty or separate statehood. Unabated violence has exacerbated under-development in the region and has fostered socio-economic problems such as unemployment, rising crime rates and drug addiction. The last of the three has, in turn, fostered another alarming situation that the northeast is now being forced to deal with — a rapidly increasing HIV-infected/AIDS population. How serious is the problem? The first case of an intravenous

    Hispanic Unemployment on the Rise
    2008-06-08 22:51:03
IS ANTI-IMMIGRANT SENTIMENT TO BLAME?The latest reports are that unemployment is at 5.5 percent, over-all.  At the same time Latino unemployment reached 7.3%. Is there a connection between immigration reform, hard-line anti-immigration sentiment, and the more recent anti-illegal raids and the higher Hispanic unemployment rates?  If legal immigrants and Hispanics who are American citizens are paying the price for this strange version of national security, isn’t something wrong? What is the bottom line here?  How many of these people are registered to vote?  How many of them voted Republican once upon a time?  How many are going ...

US Fed sees slower growth, higher unemployment this year
    2008-05-21 22:59:00
WASHINGTON - FEDERAL Reserve officials strongly suggested they won't be inclined to cut interest rates further even as they sharply downgraded their forecast for economic growth this year, citing damage from a housing slump, credit crunch and galloping energy prices.Wall Street took a tumble as investors faced the weaker outlook and the possibility that the Fed's rate-cutting campaign was winding down. The Dow Jones industrials plunged more than 200 points. In fact, the Fed's decision to lower interest rates at its April 29-30 meeting was a 'close call,' according to minutes of those private deliberations released Wednesday. The Fed hopes that its series of powerful rate cuts ordered since last September and the government's US$168 billion (S$228 billion) stimulus package of tax rebates for people and tax breaks for businesses will help energize growth somewhat in the second half of this year.Fed officials viewed economic activity 'as likely to be particularly weak in the first half of 2

Forecasters see weak economy, higher unemployment
    2008-05-19 03:49:00
By Jeannine Aversa, AP Economics Writer Forecasters foresee weak economy, higher unemployment even if housing, credit woes ebb WASHINGTON (AP) -- First the good news: The worst of the painful housing slump and the credit crunch might come to an end this year. Now the bad: The economy will weaken further and unemployment will rise. That's the latest outlook from forecasters in a survey to be released Monday by the National Association for Business Economics, also known by its acronym NABE. It will take time for any rays of light to poke through the economic clouds, though.A growing number of economists believe the country is on the brink of a recession or in one already, dragged down by all the problems in housing, credit and financial markets. Now 56 percent of the economists think the economy has started or will enter a recession this year. That's up from 45 percent in a survey in February. If there is a recession, it probably will be short and shallow, economists said.Forecasters dow

    Tyrannosaurus Claims Unemployment Benefit
    2008-02-20 07:30:13
Fulham, London — In a seemingly unlikely scenario, a Tyrannosaurus tore off the roof to a South London Job Centre, snarling and growling at civil servants while waving his P45 around. The Tyrannosaurus, last seen during the Cretaceous period and on the production set of Jurassic Park III, began a tirade of growling abuse [...]

    Outsourcing not causing US unemployment
    2008-02-20 03:57:00
India Inc, which is facing the heat from US Presidential candidates who blamed 'shipping jobs' to China and India for rising US unemployment, has launched a counter-offensive here telling Americans that the industry is creating new work opportunities for them. A full-page advertisement in the Chicago Tribune on Tuesday, by industry body FICCI and the Commerce Ministry, gives an elaborate account of how the legendary Tata Group, along with several others like Ranbaxy, Mahindra USA, Bharat Forge, ITC Kitchens of India and HCL America have created thousands of jobs in America by investing in different sectors of the US economy. The FICCI ad insertion in the leading US paper coincided with Barack Obama, who is engaged in a tight race with Hillary Clinton for the Democratic Presidential nomination, making a strong pitch to Ohio's blue-collar workers with a plan to reward American firms that do not ship jobs overseas. "This is a six-month roll out before the Presidential el

    Less Jobs, Lower Unemployment?
    2008-02-03 18:00:25
It has been reported that 17,000 jobs were lost for the month of January. It was also reported that unemployment fell for the same month. Maybe I'm missing something, but how can unemployment go down if the number of jobs were also reduced? It would stand to reason that if there was a reduction in the number of jobs, there would be an increase in unemployment. Less jobs equals higher unemployment. I have become very suspicious of economic statistics. It just so happens that FactCheck.org just answered a question on unemployment statistics. We hear these statistics all the time, but their accuracy is never questioned. I was surprised to find out that unemployment statistics are determined through a poll of about 60,000 households. Although this number is higher than most national polls, it still represents a small segment of the workforce. I'm not sure of the size of our workforce, but if there were only 100 million workers this survey would represent just .06 percent. I beli

Unsecured loans – Unemployment does not matter
    2008-01-15 01:38:42
Unsecured loans – Unemployment does not matterBy: Ellie KatieIt is a difficult phase of life when you complete your studies and start looking for a job. You may be in need of money in such a situation. There are many lenders who can help you with personal loans despite the fact that you are unemployed.A lender normally requires you to reveal a source from which repayment would be made. It is the main issue that comes up when you apply for a loan as an unemployed person. If you are able to address this legitimate concern of the lender, your loan application may be sanctioned.Being an unemployed person, you can increase your chances of getting an unsecured loan by involving a co-signer in the loan agreement. This way you can increase your bargaining power against the lender. Unsecured loans for unemployed people are special loans and they may attract a higher interest rate than normal. These loans do not require any security and are solely based on your repayment capability and financial standing. When you take a loan that does not require any security, the loan processing is normally fast so that your financial requirement may be met as early as possible. Absence of security means that there are very few formalities involved in the loan transaction and documentation is also less. This expedites the entire loan process and you are able to get loan quickly.Being a UK resident, you have the option to apply online for unsecured loans. Almost all the lenders in the UK have online presence. Lenders include building societies, high street banks, private lenders and sub-prime lenders. There are more than 59 building societies in the UK and you can apply with them for any financial assistance. It is better to apply with several lenders and then compare their loan quotes so that you may get a competitive loan deal. Unemployment Increase Would Increase Pressure For UK Rate Cut
    2007-10-17 01:33:51
The latest UK earnings and unemployment data will be released on Wednesday at the same time as the October MPC minutes. The Bank of England remains sensitive to earnings data given its impact on inflationary pressure. The bank has been concerned over a tight labour market during the past year and is therefore still watching [...]

    A Closer Look at Unemployment
    2007-09-07 13:23:37
All  eyes are on today’s NFP Report. With the markets desperately rooting for a Fed cut, especially after the disappointed ADP Employment Report numbers, today’s BLS release is eagerly awaited. In the past, I have frequently mentioned that I was not a big believer in the headline Unemployment number. Its methodology — the Household self-reported survey — is [...]

    Unemployment rises in Morocco
    2007-05-10 10:40:00
The High Commissioner for Planning revealed in its information sheet on the situation of the job market in Morocco that the unemployment rate has slightly increased during the first quarter of 2007 to stand at 10% against 9.6% in 2006,. Up to March 2007, this rate reached 15.8% in cities while it attained in rural areas 3.8%, the HCP said. This increase most impacts on young people between 15 and 24, women living in urban areas and degree holders. On the unemployed active population, it stood during the first quarter of 2007 at 1.132 million, i.e. a 8.5% increase (8.8% in the cities and 7.6 in rural areas) while the active population over 15 reached 11.2 millions (plus 4.2%) and the activity rate increased to stand at 52%, according to the same source. A combined 369,000 remunerated job positions were created in both cities (57.9%) and countryside, the HCP revealed. Unemployment Discrimination
    2007-04-02 22:32:00
י"ד בניסן תשס"זWell, I just received notice that my claim for an unemployment benefit has been denied on the basis that the nursing facility I formerly worked for told the unemployment adjudicator that I wasn't looking for full time employment, despite the fact that I applied for several full time positions with the facility. Each time the facility chose not to hire me for those full time positions to which I applied. Despite that I reiterated this fact to the unemployment adjudicator, he chose to believe the lie over the truth.Harrassment and discrimination. Now, not only am I a victim of pervasive employment discrimination but I am a victim of unemployment discrimination as well. Of course, this is not the first time a nursing facility has protested my unemployment benefit following firing me for religious-related reasons. The first "protestor" of unemployment benefits fired me for refusing to work on Shavuot. It never ends.Goddess help me! Keep me from utterly and bitter
