| | VLC with Unicode Subtitle | | 2008-04-19 08:31:00 | | I've been thinking for an idea to written here and finally just got one after struggling with my VLC.I guess you're already familiar with the player, right? most handy media player without need of any codecs. I was playing an Jdorama SP (Special episode of a particular Japanese drama series) with softsub subtitle, separate srt file, but wondering why the player displays array of squares instead of Japanese characters as written in the sub file.Somehow I found the fix for it. Perhaps you already noticed the default VLC subtitle font is Arial. You may not know that this font does not support Unicode character such as Japanese, Chinese, Korean characters. I change the default font to Arial Unicode, which is the extended version of Arial, the characters are then displayed properly now.[ VLC Settings » Preferences » Video » Subtitles » Text Renderer ]I was thinking whether I can use any other fonts other than Arial Unicode that also supports Unicode, since I find Arial "has pretty stand | | By: Because Finding Useful Things are not always Easy | | |

| What is Unicode and why was it introduced? | | 2008-03-25 00:40:56 | | In order to understand the concept of Unicode we need to move little back and understand ANSI code. ASCII (ask key) stands for American Standard Code for Information Interchange. In ASCII format every character is represented by one byte (i.e. 8 bits). So in short we can have 256 characters (2^8). Before UNICODE came in to picture programmers used code page to represent characters in different languages. Code page is a different interpretation of ASCII set. Code pages keep 128 characters for English and the rest 128 characters are tailored for a specific language. Below is a pictorial representation of the same. There are following disadvantages of the CODE page approach:- √ Some languages like Chinese have more than 5000 characters which is difficult to represent only 128 character set. √ Only two languages can be supported at one time. As said in the previous note you can use 128 for English and the rest 128 for the other language. √ The end client should have the code page. | | By: Dotnet Interview Questions, ASP.NET, ADO.NET, AJAX | | |
| | | Unicode and MARC | | 2007-12-06 13:10:55 | | News from LC.The revised Character set specifications are now posted on the MARC site. They take into account the use of the full Unicode repertoire, as opposed to only the MARC-8 subset of Unicode, and also include the loss-less and lossy techniques for converting full Unicode to MARC-8 repertoire that were approved this year. The MARC-8 specifications are still part of the document and the MARC-8 character code tables and mappings have some improved formatting, but no changes have been made to the MARC-8 to Unicode character set mappings. The XML (all MARC-8 repertoire) and comma-delimited (East Asian MARC-8 only) files are still downloadable, but we plan to improve the XML file in the near future. We are interested to know whether the comma-delimited file is used, as we may only need to offer the XML for download. | | By: Catalogablog | | |
