| | Hangover From the Unity Party | | 2008-06-29 16:06:20 | | The too-muchness was overwhelming–too many smiles and hugs, too much arm-waving, too much cheering–above all, too much calculated color in a sequence out of a 1930s’ movie in the early days of Technicolor.
For Gail Collins, it evoked her generation’s “Field of Dreams”: “The symbolism was obviously supposed to stretch way, way beyond mere unity. Think [...] | | By: Free Shared Mobile

| Picture This: Unity | | 2008-06-27 12:22:01 | | Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama boarded a plane in Washington, DC this morning heading to their first public event together since Clinton abandoned her presidential bid earlier this month. The two will appear at a campaign rally in, appropriately, the small town of Unity, New Hampshire, this afternoon.

Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton campaign together for the first time ever.

I was so furious and upset with the eventual outcome of the Democratic Party primaries. Since taking a backseat to debating politics, and blogging about politics I have been able to calm down and think rationally about whats going to happen leading up to the general election in November. Both Barack and Hillary claim that our party will be unified come the general election, but it's easy to see that it's not going | | By: The Political Point

| | Unity 08 Closes Shop | | 2008-01-11 00:27:46 | | Unity08 announced today that its closing the doors on its current incarnation due to a shortage of both members and money. From Unity08.com The past year has taught us that it's tough to rally millions to a process as opposed to a candidate or an issue. In the past, third party movements that have broken through the monopoly of the established parties have always been based on a person (Teddy Roosevelt in 1912 or Ross Perot in the last decade) or a burning issue (slavery in the case of the insurgent Republican party in 1860). Stirring people and moving them to action about a process change - replacing the quirky primary system that tends to drive candidates to the extremes with something more inclusive and sensible - has proven to be a lot harder than we expected. And the Federal Election Commission hasn't helped. The Commission has taken the position that we are subject to their jurisdiction (even though two United States Supreme Court decisions hold exactly opposite) and, therefore, that we are limited to $5000 contributions from individuals (even though the Democrat and Republican Parties are able to receive $25,000 from individuals). Needless to say, this position by the FEC effectively limited our fundraising potential, especially in the crucial early going when we needed substantial money fast to get on with ballot access and the publicity necessary to build our membership. We were caught in a peculiar catch-22; we wanted to break the dependence on big money by getting lots of small contributions from millions of members, but needed some up-front big money to help generate the millions of members to make the small contributions. And the FEC (in effect, an arm of the parties) didn't let that happen. We have challenged this ruling in the federal courts, but are still awaiting a decision and time is running out. When I first heard of Unity08 I thought it was needed, an interesting proposition, and so crazy that it just might work. Which of course meant that it | | By: Dyre Portents | | |
| | Analysis: Iowa voters want unity | | 2008-01-06 18:55:45 | | If you want to understand what happened to Democratic presidential candidates Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama in Iowa, recall who stood by them on their respective stages Thursday night. For the Republican presidential candidates, the lesson was less obvious, even though former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee slammed former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney with a Chuck Norris-like punch. Iowans offered a roadmap for the nomination and general election fights. This election is about change but not just for change's sake, and Iowans seemed primarily interested in authenticity. They courted but ultimately rejected Romney, a relative latecomer to conservative social positions. They took a serious look at Clinton, the senator from New York but put her claims of 35 years as an agent for change behind the fresh hopefulness of Obama, the senator from Illinois, and the anger of former Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina. Thursday was a very bad day for one-time front-runners like Clinton and Republican Rudy Giuliani, the former New York mayor who finished behind libertarian Ron Paul. That may be he biggest lesson of all. In Iowa, Obama became the most authentic voice for Democrats unhappy with the country's direction and determined to change it. Obama's call to a common yearning trumped the 2008 models of partisan fighters that Clinton and Edwards had come to represent. "We are choosing unity over division and sending a powerful message that change is coming to America," Obama told cheering supporters in Des Moines. The way he took Iowa — winning among independents and women, according to exit polls — predicts strong showings in the next big tests, starting in New Hampshire on Tuesday. There, his appeal to independents could significantly help him in a race where independents make up four of 10 voters. "We had a message from the start that resonated with independents," Obama's Iowa field strategist Steve Hildebrand told me. | | By: PhreQuency Ent. | | |
| | | Why National Unity is so Hard to Achieve | | 2007-11-29 18:28:00 | | by Bobit S. AvilaIn last week’s briefing by the Strategic Studies Group, I was given a copy of the National Security Review, a publication of the National Defense College of the Philippines (NDCP), for the month of August. I was lucky to be sandwiched by Comm. Mariano Sontillanosa (ret.), AFP vice president for research and special studies of this publication, and Dr. Cesar Pobre who wrote a very interesting article, “The Quest for National Identity: An Imperative to Building the National Community.” Dr. Pobre told me that he was also a historian and thus we do have common interests, plus the fact that he is a neighbor of my first cousin, Gen. Rufino Ibay Jr., a retired police director. Dr. Pobre asked me to make objective comments about his piece. However, since it is quite long, I will only make one comment on this piece. So allow me to reprint excerpts of his article. Dr. Pobre wrote: “A nation strongly built is a nation secure. To be strong, it must have unity. In addition, to have unity, it must have, among others, a national identity. Hence the quest for national identity is an imperative to building a strong national community.” I fully agree with his observation; after all, there should be something that ought to unify all Filipinos for as long as everyone is given equal opportunity, as a nation ought to give its citizenry. However, in his chapter about the lack of unifying symbols, Dr. Pobre said, “One such symbol is a common language… we need to have one, which we can speak and write, and by which we can connect ‘our inner selves to the realities of community life.’” This is where I differ from Dr. Pobre’s thoughts. There are many in this country who still insist on having a single national language policy, which groups like the Save our Languages through Federalism (Solfed) or those who belong to that Internet group dubbed Defenders of Indigenous Languages throughout the Archipelago (DILA) strongly believe is detrimental to the | | By: Angat ang Pinoy | | |
| | The Reality of Sex- the Unity of Sex, Love, and Life | | 2007-11-23 15:48:53 | | Sex is like a stick of dynamite; once engaged in, it has enormous emotional and physical consequences. God, in His infinite wisdom, designed sex so that it would be intricately intertwined with love and life. Woe to the one who tries to undo the connections between the three! He makes sex purposeless, with no past and no future. As Chesterton would say, this person truly does not know what he's doing, because he does not know what he's undoing.
The realities of sex, love, and life form a natural trinity that should not be disconnected. Ultimately this is true because our transcendent God is ever so close to the material world. First of all, the material world is good because God created it, and according to Genesis He Himself said that it was good. Matter has a certain value no matter what any mortal's opinion about it might be. Second, with the hypostatic union, Christ came into the world to redeem all the messy, mundane, and physical aspects of man. As God in the flesh He united two disparate worlds, and fully experienced all the joy, tediousness, and pain we experience in life. He has shown us the great importance of the material world. Thus, all areas of man's life are sanctified, especially our bodies. They are not to be transcended when dealing with God. Rather, Christians are invited to enter deeply into the mystery of the flesh and consequently, the mystery of sex and marriage.
The world we live in has a schizophrenic attitude towards the material world. On the one hand it worships the body, bodily pleasure, and external bodily beauty. We can see this with all the money that is spent on giving the body pleasure, and making the body look good with fad diets, anti-aging products and surgeries, and the like. But underneath the surface of this superficial worship lies its true view of creation. Unfortunately, it ultimately disdains the flesh. Some currents of thought suggest that matter is neither good nor bad; it is simply raw materi | | By: Living Catholicism

| | Unity 08 and Law and Order | | 2007-07-11 13:16:00 | | I've spoken before about Fred Thompson and his Law and Order factor. I truly believe that it gives him a leg up simply because he is more recognizable to the common person. Those of us that watch politics like a hobby know all about him, Joe Blue Collar probably doesn't know where all the candidates stand.Of course it is very early, and I think the American populace has yet to garner a huge interest because of the length of time to the elections.Last night, another Law and Order star appeared on O'Reilly. Sam Waterston is now pitching the idea of Unity 08 on cable network news. The idea is pretty simple. Anyone can goto the site and nominate their idea of an ideal Presidential/Vice Presidential combo. The community will then vote their nomination, and those candidates will run as Independents.I have to say I like the idea. This is truly a for the people, by the people scenario, but I just don't see it garnering a whole lot of steam.I think a third party is a good idea, the more choices people have the better than can identify with candidates. My stance is that I'm an old school, founding father style Republican. Not the wishy washy crap we see today. If we would all take the bull by the horns, we could reshape our parties in the way that we want them. For me, the tradition that our party was founded upon. This type of grassroots action can help us all bring our party back to the ideals that it was founded on. | | By: The Dissident Awakens | | |
| | | Unity08 and Bloomberg: Perfect marriage? | | 2007-06-22 03:27:43 | | From The Politico: Few in the political world are more keenly interested in the ramifications of "Mike's Big Move" -- as New York's Daily News proclaimed Mayor Michael Bloomberg's decision to sever his ties with the Republican Party -- than former Carter White House official Gerald Rafshoon. He and his partner, Hotline founder Doug Bailey, are the proud parents of Unity08, a group conceived to offer an alternative to next year's Democratic and GOP nominees by building a "coalition from the middle" through an online convention. And Rafshoon told Politico that Unity08 has been holding secret conversations with three candidates interested in running for Unity08's nomination.(snip)The party's platform has been focused on offering solutions to globalization, campaign finance reform, the national debt, energy independence and terrorism. Bloomberg touched on some of those issues Wednesday when he told reporters at a New York news conference that "the big issues keep being pushed to the | | By: Dyre Portents | | |
| | | Unity is not uniformity | | 2007-06-10 18:38:00 | | Here is a sohbet or spiritual dialogue by Pir Zia Inayat Khan, which focus on the subject of evolution of humanity's understanding of Unity of God. This is a subject that always fascinates me. I found the way Pir Zia put it together simply beautiful and thoughtful. "There's a saying of Pir-o-Murshid Inayat Khan, which I feel is very important, particularly at this time. And that is: "Unity is not uniformity."If one studies history, one finds that prior to the great monotheistic religions, There were polytheistic religions. Their Deities were for the most part interchangeable. The various pantheons of Deities represented the different natural forces. If you went from one place to another, the names and images would be different, but they were translatable. So, there was a kind of universality of religion at that time. And there were no religious wars. It was understood that the names and forms were subjective. But there was something lacking at that time. And that was a sense of the t | | By: Inspirations and Creative Thoughts | | |
| | Red Cord Of Unity & The Shabbat River | | 2007-02-07 22:32:00 | | י"ט בשבט תשס"זI had originally planned to tie my Book Of Shadows (BOS) with a 9 to 10 foot braided red cord. But, I changed my mind and decided to bind my BOS when not in use with a witch's cord, also called in the craft a witch's girdle and a cingulum. Many witches also use the cingulum as a girdle-belt to tie our ritual robes. I will also use mine to embrace my BOS.To make my cingulum, I purchased 3 strands of dark red ribbon-cord each measuring 4 yards (12 feet). Together, the total footage of the 3 strands is 36 feet. The 4 yards correspond to the 4 worlds/universes, the 12 feet to the 12 boundaries [1] of each universe/world, the 3 strands to the 3 lower worlds of creation-formation-making, and the 36 feet to the Essential Unity that still exists between Light and Darkness.I tied 3 ends, one from each strand, together with a "crown" charm bound up in the knot, then tightly hand braided the 3 strands together. | | B'Reishit, The Left Emanation In Unity | | 2007-01-05 22:20:00 | | 'כדאמרינן בראשית ואין ראשית אלא חכמה שנאמר ראשית חכמה יראת הSefer HaBahir, verse 3 excerptTraditional interpretation: It is thus written (Bereshit 1:1), "In the beginning (bereshit) [G-d created the heavens and the earth." BeReishit is Beit Reishit. The word "beginning" (Reishit) is nothing other than Wisdom. It is thus written (Tehillim 111:10), "The beginning is Wisdom, the fear of G-d."With a gematria of 911, Reishit ראשית has a digit sum of 11. The number 11 pertains to the sefirot of the feminine universe of Tohu and the complete rectification of evil [1]. This task is a woman's mitzvah. Consequently, we can see that while "Beit" may pertain to Wisdom, "Reishit" pertains to the rectified feminine Left Emanation. "With Reishit" (B'Reishit) elevates the rectified feminine Left Emanation back into the realm kedushah.
