| Variegated Double Impatiens 'Pink Ice' | | 2008-05-11 05:33:43 | | Variegated Double ImpatiensImpatiens 'Pink Ice'(im-PAY-shuns)This is the Impatiens that I got the 40 flats of yesterday. It is all going to one house. I have never used the Variegated Impatiens on this large of a scale before so it going to be a bit of an adventure. In general I like variegated plants but some are too garish. This Impatiens is really tasteful and dainty so the variegation really works well. I did some other planting including some Japanese Iris ‘Sensation’ (Iris enstata), ‘Magnus’ Coneflower (Echinacea purpurea), ‘Becky’ Shasta Daisy (Chrysanthemum leucanthemum 'Becky'), Tioga Double Impatiens, Assorted Dahlia, ‘Profusion’ Zinnia and a 12 flats of Begonias. As I was planting the Scarlet Begonias the Jerry Garcia song kept going through my head. When I got home I had to put the song on my Ipod. Since I hadn’t listened to the song in a long time the words were a little different than I remembered but it is still a great song. Here are a couple of the vers... | | By: Digital Flower Pictures.com | | |

| Variegated Tapioca | | 2008-02-09 08:02:45 | | Variegated TapiocaManihot esculenta 'Variegata'(MAN-ee-hot) (es-kew-LEN-tuh)A double header from this years archives as I continue to copy and back up the original files. I haven’t grown either of these plants personally so there won’t be a lot of cultivation advice. This first plant I saw growing in a friend’s garden and even though a few of the leaves are going by (it was fall) you can see how nice this plant looked. It is a very tender perennial (USDA Zone 10) that can grow to 4 to 6 feet although in this Westchester County garden it got to about 3 feet. It is a relative to the plant that we get the Tapioca for pudding from. It looks like it would make a nice container plant. Variegated Tapioca was picked as a Texas Superstar and here is a link to more information on the plant: Variegated Tapioca, Texas SuperstarRedflower False YuccaHesperaloe parviflora(hes-per-AL-oh) (par-VEE-flor-uh)Synonym: Red YuccaThis second plant I saw growing at Wave Hill and thought that it must only... | | By: Digital Flower Pictures.com | | |

Pachysandra terminalis 'Variegata'
(pak-ih-SAN-druh) (term-in-AL-iss)
Synonyms: Japanese Spurge, Silver Edge Pachysandra
While cleaning up some leaves I was looking at my Silver Edge Pachysandra and wondered why more people don’t grow it. It is a great groundcover for brightening up shady areas and having something a little different. The one knock against it is... | | By: Digital Flower Pictures.com

Variegated Garden Phlox
Phlox paniculata 'Nora Leigh'
(floks) (pan-ick-yoo-LAY-tuh)
If you are here for Wordless Wednesday scroll down to the next post.
Wednesday again, I can hardly believe it! Of course I feel my timing is off since I have been waiting for it to get cold and instead we have been enjoying record temperatures and summer like warmth. I am not complaining, it is... | | By: Digital Flower Pictures.com

| Variegated Rock Cotoneaster | | 2007-06-21 11:48:00 | | Variegated Rock CotoneasterCotoneaster horizontalis 'Variegatus'(kot-on-ee-ASS-ter) (hor-ih-ZON-tal-is)Rosaceae (ro-ZAY-see-ay)There are only certain types of Cotoneaster that I like and this is one of them. Its delicate habit and colorful leaves are a pleasure to have in the garden. I find a lot of Cotoneasters coarse, prone to insects and maintenance intensive. This one is the complete opposite. Here it is growing with a ground cover I have been using a lot, Golden Creeping Jenny (Lysimachia nummularia 'Aurea'). I like it but some gardeners could find it a little invasive. I planted some with a red Weeping Japanese Maple and it looks nice but then I am a glutton for color. My Golden Creeping Jenny (aka Golden Moneywort) has a lot of flowers on it this year and that has just added a blast of more color. If you haven’t realized it yet I have an affinity for golden and yellow plants. I have also come to love yellow flowers, which took awhile as they were probably my least favorite... | | By: Digital Flower Pictures.com | | |

| Variegated Weigela (Weigela florida 'Variegata') | | 2007-05-26 12:09:00 | | Variegated WeigelaWeigela florida 'Variegata'(wy-GEE-la) (FLOR-id-uh)CaprifoliaceaeJust a quick post for I am off to work today. These are a couple of shots from the Estate’s Weigela Collection. I am not even bringing my camera to work today, as I know I will be too busy to shot any pictures. I have decided to take Sunday off so maybe I will go to Wave Hill or the NYBG for a few snaps. I usually like to have everybody gardens open by Memorial Day but it just isn’t going to happen this year. I should be able to get it done by next week and then I will have some time to concentrate on some of the new work I have on tap. It has been a heck of a season so far. I just wish I had more time to photograph it. The various Weigela have been blooming for a few weeks. It is one of my favorite shrubs because all it needs is a bit of pruning and it is very reliable for blooming every year. This is 'Pink Princess'Here is a short list of the cultivars I am growing (there are others but I can... | | By: Digital Flower Pictures.com | | |

| Variegated Japanese Maple Again (Acer palmatum 'Higasayama') | | 2007-05-07 11:21:00 | | Variegated Japanese MapleAcer palmatum 'Higasayama'(AY-ser) (pahl-MAY-tum)This sure is a beautiful Japanese Maple. I took this picture when I visited a local retail nursery. They had quite a nice display garden and it was filled with among other things some nice Japanese Maples. I was there looking for two 10-12 foot Japanese Maples myself and they had them but wanted $2000 each. They were Acer palmatum 'Trompenburg' which is has a nice rolled leaf and holds its color well during the season (slight bronzing). Since the tree only grows to about 15 feet this were mature specimens. So I think they were worth it as they are for an entranceway to an estate in Ridgefield. ‘Higasayama’ has a unique appearance when the foliage is emerging. It reminded of ten thousand hands unfurling. The color is great especially when the sun was glancing off it. Here is another picture of a tree in the display garden that had a beautiful color. The slight red tinge around the leaves really added a lot... | | By: Digital Flower Pictures.com | | |
