    Vegetable Tamago Rolls
    2008-08-11 12:23:00
Last night, we threw together a bunch of things for dinner but it seemed so carb-heavy. I tried to conjure up a way to add protein and veggies to our meal and somehow this idea came to mind. I loved it so much that I decided to make it again for lunch, tweaking the recipe just a bit to make the rolls a bit smaller, and therefore easier to eat.Vegetable Tamago Rolls~2 appetizer portions or 1 lunch portion2 eggs1/2 teaspoon mirin1/4 teaspoon soy sauce1/4 teaspoon sugar2/3 cup julienned carrots, blanched and cooled2/3 cup seeded and julienned cucumbers6 tablespoons seaweed sesame stuff *see pics belowLet's talk about the ingredients first: The measurement for the julienned veggies (matchstick size) is a very rough estimate. It's hard to measure that shape.I also want to apologize for having an ingredient called "seaweed stuff". We bought this mixture of seaweed, sesame oil, sugar, sesame, and salt at M2M and it doesn't have an English name. The packaging is covered in Korean. Can someone

    Skirret - everlasting vegetable
    2008-07-10 17:59:00
As more and more of our vegetable needs have been met with visits to the green grocers, costermongers and supermarkets more cottage garden vegetables have been lost to us all. An old and useful vegetable that would benefit everyone is skirret. Skirret is a root vegetable ... to best describe its flavour would be to imagine a cross between a parsnip and carrot. Once a skirret plant in the garden then it's there forever as they are said to be everlasting. As with carrots and parsnips they have green foliage on top but then they produce a multitude of roots or root tubas and as the roots or tubas are broken off for use then more grow in their place. Skirret can be used in stir frying, soups, stews, casseroles, baking, chipping ... in fact, it is a welcome addition or substitute to any other root vegetable and therefore can be used to vary old favourite recipes. This lovely, Elizabethan vegetable is worth a place in anyone's garden or back yard. It can be grown from purchasing a small

Is a tomato a fruit or a vegetable?
    2008-05-26 00:00:00
The confusion about 'fruit' and 'vegetable' arises because of the differences in usage between scientists and cooks. Scientifically speaking, a tomato is definitely a fruit. True fruits are developed from the ovary in the base of the flower, and contain the seeds of the plant (though cultivated forms may be seedless). Blueberries, raspberries, and oranges are true fruits, and so are many kinds of nut. Some plants have a soft part which supports the seeds and is also called a 'fruit', though it i

    Starting A Vegetable Garden
    2008-03-18 23:38:43
Fresh lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers and radishes, this is what you get by starting a vegetable garden. When you can't find fresh vegetables locally, try growing your own, starting small and planting what you like to eat is the first step. Make sure that all your plants need the same growing requirements and not needing more time and attention that you can give them. If you are starting small, don't start with a large variety, more of the same will be best if you won't always have the same amount of time to devote on your garden.Planting on a cool day (if you can) as opposed to a hot sultry one will cause less stress on you and your plants. Water your plants in the pots they came in the day before you plan to plant them and never leave them in the pots in the sun, they will Dry Out. Loosen the roots before planting, this gives them room to spread out and grow when transplanted into the ground. Plant the plant at the same depth as the pot it came out of, not to high or the roots will show

Mix-Vegetable and Coconut Milk Soup (Healthy and Wholesome)
    2008-03-03 18:35:58
When it comes to soup recipes, we tend to go after the tried and tested combinations more often than not. Even I used to do the same, because some recipes and flavors just stick with us and we don't feel the urge to try something new. But this time around, as I mulled over the idea of a wholesome vegetarian soup, there were quite a few ideas that played in my head. I wanted it to be thick and creamy, yet without all the fat that heavy cream brings with it, and I wanted it to be flavorful as... Please Click the Title for the Full Post

They are so named because of their distinct resemblance in shape to the Timbales instrument. In fact, it is an excellent Appetizer with a Soup, or goes perfectly well as a side dish too! This recipe is an inspiration from a similar one I found in a cookbook called "The Food of the World" (pic attached below)Ingredients1 cup carrots- shredded1 cup peas - boiled and mashed1 cup red capsicum - chopped finely1/2 cup whipping cream3 egg yolkspinch of nutmegsalt and black pepper - to tasteMethodPreheat oven to 160 deg. Steam the carrots or boil them so they are fully cooked. Wash and boil the peas too and mash them. Chop the caps

    Vegetable Stock
    2007-08-31 11:02:00
With the exception of cabbages (which include broccoli and cauliflower), which can overpower the flavor of vegetable stock, you can use all kinds of vegetables for this stock. The flavor will vary slightly, depending on the mix you use. Tomatoes can also overwhelm stock flavor, so while I do use them, I keep the amount small (unless of course, you want a strong tomato flavor). Some people feel that asparagus also overwhelms the stock. I personally don't agree, and find that asparagus adds a depth and richness to vegetable stock. Making vegetable stock is a great way to clean out the refrigerator of food that is less than fresh, don't limit your stock making ingredients to whole vegetables. Start saving peels (well washed, of course) and trimmings while you cook. Your stock will be strained before being used, and all those unattractive peels will be gone, but they will have imparted a lovely flavor to your stock. Some excellent vegetables (and vegetable scraps) to use are: onions, gar

    Goya..the vegetable,not the painter
    2007-08-27 00:53:00
Goya is a bitter gourd like vegetable that originally comes from Okinawa. Its becoming increasingly popular and a common sight this time of year in supermarkets and on green grocery shelves. In Okinawa, goya chanpuru,a stir fried dish with pork and tofu is a common way of serving it.Other ways of eating it include goya tempura, goya sweet and sour and goya soaked in brown sugar.Personally I slice it up,quickly boil it and then fry it in a little oil, soya sauce and sugar to lessen the bitterness.Goya is rich in vitamin C and is reputed to help beat the summer heat.Products such as goya juice and goya tea can be found as thirst quenchers. As well as being held up as one way of fighting heat its also said to stimulate the appetite and moderate blood pressure. And despite its lumpy, warty outward appearance it is said to be good for your skin as well.

    Vegetable Confectionary.
    2007-08-22 21:42:00
Today, August 23rd … A newspaper article on this day in 1943 described the “bright new future for the sweet potato”. Professor Ware of Alabama Polytechnic had given a demonstration of a “surprising array of new concoctions” made from the vegetable. One of these concoctions was Alayam (an intentional anagram of Malaya? If so, why?), a sweetened, dehydrated product that was 48% sugar (making it no surprise that it tasted ‘like caramel taffy’). This basic product was then used to manufacture a number of other foods, such as breakfast cereal, pie-crust, and a sort of candy made in the form of pretzel-like sticks flavoured with (depending on which report you read) with ‘peanuts, pecans, coconut or pineapple’, or ‘oranges, nuts, or macaroon’. The professor hoped (or expected) that his invention would become a regular food after the war, but the world seemed to have been underwhelmed by the idea, and it did not happen - unless we are all eating it unawares in th

    Asparagus - A Vegetable
    2007-07-24 07:00:00
Mercury newsLook around your vegetable garden: Are not some of these plants pretty enough to be grown as ornamentals, perhaps in the flower garden or shoulder-to-shoulder with shrubbery? Imagine, if you will, a twining vine with sprays of scarlet flowers poking out from lime-green foliage. The plant, scarlet runner bean, is so attractive that you might consider the edible pods as merely incidental until you taste their rich, meaty flavor. Asparagus is another vegetable as pretty as it is toothsome. The feathery leaves provide the perfect backdrop for bright flowers - red geraniums or deep-blue delphiniums, for example...
