Do Vegetarians Have Stronger Immune System?
    2008-06-23 09:29:00
Rev up your immune system by eating all kinds of fruits and veggies. Plant foods contain a vast amount of compounds that can boost immunity, including vitamin C and beta carotene.A study at the German Cancer Research Center compared the blood of male vegetarians and meat eaters. They found that vegetarians' white cells were twice as deadly against tumor cells as those of carnivores. This means vegetarians needed only half as many white cells to do the same job as meat eaters did. Why vegetarians' white cells are more deadly is not clear. Researchers speculated they may yield greater armies of natural killer cells or more feroious (natural killer) NK cells. Not surprisingly, the vegetarians also had much higher levels of carotene in their blood. Beta carotene from fruits and veggies is a documented friend of your immune system.Eat spinach and carrots and other fruits and veggies rich in beta carotene. Studies show carotene boosts immune defenses against both bacterial and viral infection

Kids with high IQs grow up to be Vegetarians
    2008-04-25 04:29:20
As a child's IQ rises, his taste for meat in adulthood declines, a new study suggests.British researchers have found that children's IQ predicts their likelihood of becoming vegetarians as young adults -- lowering their risk for cardiovascular disease in the process. The finding could explain the link between smarts and better health, the investigators say.Recent studies suggest that vegetarianism may be associated with lower cholesterol, reduced risk of obesity and heart disease. This might explain why children with high IQs tend to have a lower risk of heart disease in later life."Children who scored higher on IQ tests at age 10 were more likely than those who got lower scores to report that they were vegetarian at the age of 30," Gale said. The researchers found that 4.5 percent of participants were vegetarians. Of these, 2.5 percent were vegan, and 33.6 percent said they were vegetarian but also ate fish or chicken. There was no difference in IQ score between strict vegetarians and t

Lower rate of Obesity and Diabetes in Vegetarians
    2008-04-16 00:28:49
Approximately 65% of the U.S. population is overweight and 31% is obese. Vegans have much lower rates of obesity, and on average weigh 10% less than non-vegetarians. In addition to looking slimmer, being lighter reduces the risk of a myriad of health problems including respiratory problems, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. In a study of over 25,000 Seventh Day Adventists, vegetarians were found to have significantly lower rates of diabetes. Among men in the study, risk for diabetes was a whopping 80% higher in men who ate meat, after adjusting for weight.

    Vegetarians have higher childhood IQ
    2008-04-11 05:46:05
Vegetarians have higher childhood IQ, .although a third seem to suffer from conceptual problems! A paper published in December 2006 by the British Medical Journal reported that children with higher IQs tend to go on to become vegetarian.Adults who classified themselves as vegetarian tended to be five points higher in IQ when they were tested at age 10.Interestingly, the results remained stable after education and social class were controlled for. However, a third of people who classified themselves as vegetarian ate chicken or fish, suggesting most people work with a reasonably flexible definition. This study is from a research group in Southhampton who are looking at the link between childhood factors and adult brain development.

    Quotes from Famous Vegetarians
    2008-04-08 04:39:34
I don't have any understanding of a human being who doesn't respect the beauty of life and that goes for all creatures that have thoughts, feelings and needs. -Alicia SilverstoneThe American fast food diet and the meat eating habits of the wealthy around the world support a world food system that diverts food resources from the hungry.A diet higher in whole grains and legumes and lower in beef and other meat is not just healthier for ourselves but also contributes to changing the world system that feeds some people and leaves others hungry. -Dr.Walden BelloThe fact is that there is enough food in the world for everyone. But tragically, much of the world's food and land resources are tied up in producing beef and other livestock--food for the well off--while millions of children and adults suffer from malnutrition and starvation. -Dr.Walden BelloWhen you see the golden arches you are probably on your way to the pearly gates. -William Castelli,M.D.Our food system takes abundant grain,

    Why Do People Become Vegetarians?
    2008-03-31 15:33:12
OK that’s a rhetorical question and we both know that. However, there is a point here that I want to make. I am a born vegetarian (never eaten meat in my life) and owing to that, I have had several conversations (dozens, no hundreds, hey, may be even thousands, yes I AM that crazy of [...]

    Vegetarians and Bodybuilding
    2008-01-03 17:32:00
A lot of people are talking about vegetarians and bodybuilding and the general belief is that vegetarians simply can not be good bodybuilders because of the high quantity of protein that can be found in meat. Keep in mind that simple is better when it comes to bodybuilding. If you do not get enough protein in your daily diet then your body can not repair itself and results are not achievable. Keep in mind that this is not about people that want to compete in bodybuilding. We are talking about regular individuals that simply want to obtain the best possible results in this sport, while being vegetarians and without risking their health. There are actually different types of vegetarians. Some will eat no eggs, meat fish or poultry while others will not consume byproducts and animal products. Most vegetarians that practice bodybuilding are actually people that do natural bodybuilding. They do not want to become the next Ronnie Coleman and they simply want to look good. A natural diet is a key element in natural bodybuilding and the truth is that meal can be replaced with other ingredients and foods. You can also include special soy protein drinks in your daily diets. Believe it or not, soy based products are quite cheap and adding fruit and plain yogurt is again very good. The good news for vegetarians that practice bodybuilding is that most natural food stores will hold meat replacements. Veggie burgers, nuts and beans are just examples of what you put in your vegetarian bodybuilding diet and be successful. Don't forget to drink plenty of water as this is very important. The topic of vegetarians and bodybuilding must be looked at as individuals that want to be healthy. You can lose weight without low carb diets. Put in slow burning carbohydrates like yams, brown rice and oats and it is always healthier to eat ingredients from a variety of food groups. There are also many good restaurants that have vegetarian meals and do not focus on what you can not eat! Think about w

A lot of people have asked me "How can you live without eating meat? how do you get your proteins and other nutrients? Isn't it tough being a vegetarian?" And I've always answered "Frankly, it's not at all tough, and there are a hundred things you can eat to maintain a healthy balanced veggie diet!" I'm not against any of those who eat meat:) it's part of the Food Chain, and helps maintain the balance. But here is a list of just 10 foods, or rather Superfoods, which will help you live a healthy life without meat, eggs or poultry. So compare your diet to this healthy-food checklist and see if you need to add something to your daily diet!! October is the Vegetarian Awareness Month, and click here for joining in the fun!CARROT - They may make your salad more crunchy and tasty, but the powerful beta carotene that they contain, aids in reducing your risk of stroke. It also helps improve your vision, upto a certain extent, and when fed right from childhood.SPINACH/BROCCOLI/CABBAGE - These green leafy veggies are high in potent anti-cancer compounds like sulforaphane and quercitin. Spinach is loaded with fibre and cancer-fighting substances, it can also improve your eyesight. Cabbage is exceedingly rich in fibre and has almost 50% of the recommended daily allowance of vitamin C. Broccoli is packed with antioxidants, which help fight against heart disease, strenghten the immune system and lower the risk of cancer and infection.APPLE - Often losing out in publicity to its high profile colleague-the orange, recent studies have shown that apples can reduce the risk of asthma and may help prevent lung cancer. Yeah, there's some truth to that popular saying, after all! It helps contribute to increase in haemoglobin too in the blood, and boost immunity.CITRUS FRUITS (ORANGE) - One of the easiest ways to get your daily dose of vitamin C is eating a lemon or Orange. Vitamin C is an important aid to fighting stress and disease by fighting the growth of free radicals in your body. Citrus juice contains flavonoids, a phytonutrient that lowers the body's production of cholesterol, inhibits blood clot formation and boosts the bang of vitamin C. Citrus fruits are also loaded with soluble fiber which lowers cholesterol, maintains healthy blood sugar levels, and helps you to manage your weight. They also contain limonene, an oil found in the peel of the fruit that might inhibit a variety of cancers.TOMATO - Tomatoes are an abundant source of lycopene, a powerful antioxidant that helps in the fight against cancer and heart disease, and are also packed with vitamins A, C and E. Lycopene is also believed to fight cancer and promote heart health.BERRIES - Berries ahve rightly been called the "Food for the brain!" Research proves that berries slow and reverse many of the degenerative diseases that can affect the brain as we get old. Blueberries contain an additional antioxidant to fight against cancer. They're high in vitamin and fiber content. They're an excellent source of antioxidants, compounds that protect our bodies from the stress of day to day living. They also help boost your memory. Fresh berries are a must for weight-loss plans as they are high in water and low in calories.BEANS/LEGUMES - Beans of all kinds-kidney, black, pinto, chickpeas, and soybeans - help reduce cholesterol, and are full of proteins, antioxidants, folic acid and potassium. They also contain significant amounts of calcium, iron, potassium, zinc, and complex carbs. Most legumes also contain protease inhibitors, which can suppress cancer cells and slow tumor growth.WHOLE GRAINS - Wholegrains include a whole range of foods such as breads, cereals, pasta and rice. They contain valuable antioxidants not found in fruits and vegetables, as well as lots of vitamins, iron, minerals and fibre. Research shows a diet high in whole grains may help prevent heart disease, some cancers, obesity and diabetes. Oats and Barley can help stabilize blood sugar, and assist in hunger management.ONION/GARLIC - These foods which are responsible for so much flavor in our food, also act as a powerful anti-fungal, an anti-viral and an anti-bacterial nutrient. Studies have shown that consuming crushed raw Garlic lowers cholesterol and blood pressure. They contain diallyl sulfide and saponins, compounds that add distinctive flavors to our recipes and fight cancer and heart disease at the same time.NUTS/SEEDS - Although high in calories, nuts often enable people to maintain or lose weight. Vegetarians Should Eat a Balanced Diet
    2007-10-02 03:41:39
CNN has an article about vegetarianism, how vegetarians should eat a balanced diet, and how protein is a “real concern” for vegetarians. I am glad to see that a somewhat positive article about vegetarianism making the headlines. It was also nice that they chose to highlight my favorite vegetarian restaurant in Atlanta, The [...]

    Are all vegetarians Nazis?
    2007-07-01 09:11:57
Should atheism should be blamed for the disasters of state communism, namely, that the Soviet Union (an avowedly and officially atheist state), had an unmatched record for brutality and mass extermination on a horrific scale? Well, in a word, no! This statement, in fact, displays a remarkable lack of understanding about atheism and Marxism. The fact that the Soviet Union was atheist is no more reason to think that atheism is necessarily evil than the fact that Hitler was a vegetarian is a reason to suppose that all vegetarians are Nazis. It is certainly an historical refutation of the idea that atheism must always be benign, but it is a very naive atheist who thinks that it is impossible for atheists ever to do wrong. Christian critics who also think that the Soviet Union provides some kind of refutation of theism would, by their own logic, have to accept that atrocities such as the crusades or inquisitions refute Christianity. If the history of the Soviet Union is to be used

    Vegetarians Flying the Friendly Skies
    2007-04-13 21:03:00
Fewer and fewer airlines are offering passengers meals. However, some flights (usually the 6+ hour flights) still provide this service. Generally, the meals include a sandwich with a slice of meat and cheese along with cookies. If you're vegetarian, vegan, have specific dietary limitations (ie: lactose intolerant, peanut allergy, etc.), or are simply looking for a healthier alternative, you'll want to request a vegan meal in advance. Either call the airline after you've booked your flight, or request one during your online checkout process to ensure that you'll receive a vegan meal during your flight. These meals are not only much healthier for you, but they also look and taste better than the standard meal. Many times, once other passengers see our vegan meals, they wish they had requested one for themselves (even if they aren't vegetarians!).
