| Italy: Exploring sun-splashed Venice's city squares | | 2008-07-14 16:52:00 | | I liked going out in the relative cool of the early morning, getting a newspaper, having my first cappuccino at the Bar all'Orologio and watching one of the last authentic neighborhoods in Venice come to life. In the last several decades, rising real estate prices have driven residents out; the population dropped from 171,000 in 1951 to fewer than 62,000 in 2006, leaving the city a tourist ghetto. But you wouldn't know it in this campo, where I watched men with briefcases hurrying to work. Old women pushing shopping carts quarreled at the vegetable stand. Finally, the tourists started coming out, studying maps until they got the idea of looking up at the church. It is one of the most companionable in Venice, with two main facades, one facing the canal, the other overlooking the campo where tourists enter. As the interior restoration proceeds, visitors can watch workers on ladders scour stone moldings and chip away old paint.

| | | Venice | | 2008-06-06 15:13:00 | | 2008-06-07: Updated to include images. We arrived in Venice and shuffled off to our ship, the Princess Emerald, where like we mentioned, we spent a ridiculous amount of time trying to get wireless service to our laptop. By the time we were done calling our travel agency at American Express, we were starving and rushed off to find a dining room. Luckily, we were seated quickly. We were both in a bad mood, deeply regretting our decision to book our honeymoon through TheBigDay.com. (BTW, I just paid over $50 just to post the last two posts because of the spotty service, and I can't even get more than 1 picture to load right now because of how bad the internet is here.)The first thing I noticed was that their menu included many "lotus spa" healthy choices. It's nice to know you can attempt to stay healthy on a cruise. Yet, I chose the Seafood Terrine to start, not one of those "healthy items". It was presented nicely and pretty good for a seafood terrine, which is actually not something I u | | By: FoodMayhem | | |

| | Rumble: When you think of Venice: Food... | | 2008-05-08 16:34:49 | | Many visitors to Italy will appreciate the food. Not the usual spaghetti or pizza, but the real Italian food: Italy excels in simple but real tasty food. I sell my soul for the sea food, prosciutto (raw ham), the cheeses,...Visiting Venice last weekend, reminded me that this town has its own traditions. Some of it, is embraced into Italian traditions, like tiramisu (which was 'born' in this region). Some say "gelato", Italian ice cream is better in Venice than anywhere else in Italy:.But the pastry shops, while not as abundant as those in Vienna, in the quality, taste and variety, are not to be found anywhere else in Italy: View the slideshow of all my Venice pictures.Check out other posts on the Road about Venice.

| | Rumble: When you think of Venice: Glass art | | 2008-05-08 16:19:17 | | One more think many people think of, when talking about Venice: Venetian glass..!Venetian glass making tradition goes way back, but only got really known when the Venetian Republic, fearing fire and destruction to the city’s mostly wood buildings, ordered glass makers to move their foundries to the island of Murano, in the Venetian archipelago in 1291. Murano's glass makers were soon the island’s most prominent citizens. By the 14th century, glass makers were allowed to wear swords, enjoyed immunity from prosecution by the Venetian state and found their daughters married into Venice’s most affluent families. The catch was that glass makers weren't allowed to leave the Republic.Murano’s glass makers held a monopoly on quality glass making for centuries, developing or refining many technologies including crystalline glass, enameled glass (smalto), glass with threads of gold (aventurine), multicolored glass (millefiori), milk glass (lattimo), and imitation gemstones made of glass | | By: The Road to the Horizon | | |
| | Rumble: When you think of Venice: Carnival | | 2008-05-08 16:03:34 | | What else do you think of when hearing "Venice"? Pumuckl commented in a previous post saying: "Carnival"!And she is right! The carnival of Venice was first recorded in 1268, and has been a long tradition since then. Strolling through the alleys of Venice, we came across many shops where they sold the typical Venetian masks, made in leather or with the original papier-mâché technique. The original masks were rather simple in design and decoration. They often had a symbolic and practical function. Nowadays, most of them are made with the application of gesso and gold leaf and are all hand-painted using natural feathers and gems to decorate.A photo impression:View the slideshow of all my Venice pictures.Check out other posts on the Road about Venice.

| | | | Rumble: When you think of Venice: Gondola's and water | | 2008-05-05 16:56:52 | | Ok, unraveling of the secret: we were in Venice last weekend. ;-)Matt, one of the readers of The Road, commented a while ago that my blog was listed in the "travel" category of one of the blog directories while it seems more like a political blog.I agree that lately I have been posting more news flashes (often with a bit of political cynism, I admit). But in essence, this blog is neither one or the other... I write about things that happen around me. Sometimes I am in a critical mood, sometimes I am involved in my daily (aid) work environment, and sometimes I am travelling. So the contents of the posts change as my life changes. ;-) The next few posts will be about travelling. Promise!So.. Venice... OK.. Here is a question for you. When hear "Venice", what do you think about? I bet the first thing would be "gondola's" and water. Rightfully so.It is originally built on the mudflats, an archipelago of 118 islands formed by about 150 canals in a shallow lagoon. The islands are connected b | | By: The Road to the Horizon | | |

| | Homeless in Venice III | | 2007-09-26 08:30:00 | | The ConclusionIt is not hard to find a lot of them. When you get to an offramp, on the sidewalk, in the park, there's always someone with a piece of cardboard with a handwritten note on it begging for some change, some begging for food. With those ragged clothes that look like it hadn't been washed for a year, with weary faces who look like they had given up on everything, and that confused hungry look, you wouldn't fail to at least notice them. One time I saw a man who is obviously homeless. He sits on the curb just outside the Chinese restaurant where I was about to eat. I went back to my car to grab some few loose change then grab a couple of dollar bills. I was about to give it to him when he said no. I was surprised. He looked like he needed it but he refused. I just shrugged my shoulders and went my way. After I finished my quick dinner, I ordered another meal to go. I gave it to the same man I saw on my way in. This time he readily accepted and thanked me for it. | | Homeless in Venice II | | 2007-09-26 07:08:00 | | (2nd part of a series) Being homeless at all is no feat. That's why I was surprised why anyone would choose to go homeless when he has a home he could go to. The streets are not safe and oftentimes mean. You could get mugged anytime, killed if you're unlucky. But Sarge, like some homeless veterans, has a more serious problem than being homeless. He is suffering from a post-war syndrome. I don't know exactly the technicalities and other issues about it, but a lot of them had that seemingly unreal perception on things. There's also this one man who I refer to as simply the Rainman. You could ask him about any mathematical problems and he'll give you an absolutely correct solution. He would provide you with calculations like an age-old university professor except that you would notice that his eyes are looking through you. He hears you but he doesn’t see you. You ask him about where he came from or anything, he's gone. And then there's this old couple from Hawaii who were wanderin | | By: Literary Exex | | |

Contrary to the eclectic impressions a tourist might have during the day, the nights have a small-town feel to it. On any given day you will find lots of characters along the speedway by the beach. Artists both new and old hand displaying their latest work and willing to do your portrait for a fee, street performers showing their talents for a chunk of change, well-tanned bodybuilders showing off their enormous muscles, surfer kids waiting for a swell, skater boys challenging each other for new moves, and some simply enjoying the shows and whatever the place has free to offer. In Venice, everyday is a day on the beach. But at night it is different. | | Venice Film Festival 2007 | | 2007-08-29 03:52:00 | | The Mostra Internazionale d'Arte Cinematografica, better known internationally as the Venice Film Festival, is by far the oldest film festival still in existence today. Screenings take place in cinemas all over the city, but the centre of the action is the Lido area. The festival was established in 1932, and even in the prevailing cinematic climate of fascist propaganda films and imitations of Hollywood comedies ("white telephone" comedies, named after that undying symbol of elegance and opulence), it upheld the values of cinema d'auteur, transcending national boundaries. The 64th Venice International Film Festival kicks off on Wednesday 29 August. The opening ceremony is to take place in the Palazzo del Cinema at 7.00 p.m., hosted by the Italian actress Ambra Angiolini. This will be followed by Antonello Sarno's documentary, Venezia 75, and by the first film screening in competition, Atonement by Joe Wright.More information here.64th Venice International Film FestivalAugust 29 - Sept | | By: Travelling Italy
| | The Ambiance of Venice | | 2007-08-26 02:46:00 | | Ahhh, Venice..sounds of Andrea Boccelli resonating from open balcony windows. Two young lovers comfortably embraced while savoring a nice gondola ride through a quaint canal. Couples strolling down the narrow cobblestone streets mano-a-mano. Romance is in the air. And there's no better place for romance than a trip to Venice.Venice's main waterway is the Canale Grande (Grand Canal) which snakes its way through the city for approximately 2 miles. Other canals will feed into and out of this one. The Grand Canal is the "Main Street" of Venice.A good vantage point to see the Grand Canal and its activity is from the Rialto Bridge (Ponte di Rialto). The Rialto Bridge is one of only three bridges to cross the Grand Canal. The original wooden drawbridge collapsed and was rebuilt a few times culminating with its current day stone structure in the late 1500's.Piazza San Marco is really the heart and soul of Venice. This is the main tourist focal point of the city. It is a place where people (and pigeons) congregate to people-watch. The place to be seen sipping some cappuccino or to people-watch outside one of the cafés overlooking the piazza. On the Eastern side of the Piazza lies the Doge's Palace (or Palazzo Ducale). This was the seat of the government during the glory years of Venice. Housed inside are artistic treasures and masterpieces by the famous renaissance artists Tintoretto and Veronese, among others.Next to the Doge's Palace lies a former prison. From here, prisoners were led across the Bridge of Sighs (or Ponte dei Sospiri), as a final walkway prior to their execution. Today, the bridge is used in another manner young lovers are promised eternal love if they should kiss in a gondola underneath the Bridge of Sighs. I told you Venice was a romantic city! Where else can a grim bridge connotate romance?Murano glass-making, craftsmanship and artistry that dates back to the 13th century, was originated and perfected in Venice. It is definitely worth it to see these craftsmen at work. They usually have tours where you can see them in action. There are hundreds of shops, particularly on the island of Lido.A discussion of Venice would not be complete without discussing the pre-Lenten festival of Carnevale. Carnevale, from the Latin meaning "farewell to meat", is Venice's version of masquerade balls, costumes, parades, grandiose events, etc. The idea, of course, is similar to the Mardi Gras in New Orleans or the Carnevale of Rio de Janeiro, where Christians celebrate one last "hurrah" prior to Lent.Another famous Venetian tradition is to visit a "cicchetteria", a little restaurant-bar establishment usually hidden in many of the alleyways of Venice. On Saturday mornings, prior to lunch, you will see Venetians visiting the "cicchetterie" to sample "gli spuncioni", or hors d'oeuvre type appetizers. Similar to the tapas used in Spain. Don't forget to wash it down with some refreshing "cicchetti", or the local wine (red or white) served in these establishments. If you like to gamble, Venice has the most renowned casino in all of Italy. There are actually two that operate alternatively at different times of the year. You will usually find one of them open, except for holidays.Despite the above, Venice is not problem-free. Flooding and polluted canals have been a concern for some time. Some of the world's brightest engineers have been working on a system to alleviate the "acqua alta", or flooding that can occur after a heavy rain or during an extraordinarily high tide. Piazza San Marco has been known to be flooded for a few hours at a time. And of course, during the summer tourist season, Venice can become quite crowded. It is best to make your plans well in advance. However, Venetians are very resilient. The town was basically built by trying to defy Mother Nature's sea. It is this resilience that has served the people well for many centuries. Venetians are a special breed that live life to the fullest. They are a people that know how to perservere. And persevere they will for many more centuries to come.A trip to Italy would definitely not be complete without considering Venice on your agenda. It is easily accessible by train (about 4 hours from Florence) or just a quick flight from Rome. Ciao!Author: Larry Aiellovia articlesbase.com | | By: Travelling Italy | | |

I woke up this morning with the realization that me and my New Zealand girl would part. I’m on a five hour train to Venice that is filled with reserve seats, therefore, I’m on a small seat in the aisle for the first time. I’m slightly worried about getting a room at a hostel in Venice, but not really either. As I was waiting for the train to leave, I think I spied a pickpocket attempt, though I can’t be sure. The guy new I saw him, and retreated, whether or not he was a robber. When I got to Venice, I made the amateur mistake of not calling ahead to the hostel. Instead, I took my backpack and went on a two hour journey around Venice, only to find out that the Ostello Venezia was full. This turned out to be a good thing. It had a nice view, but it was on an island, and I’d need to be back by 9:30 PM (the last vaporetto).
So I went to my second choice, a hotel two minutes from the train station. There, I immediately met Beth (Canadian | | By: GoBackpacking

The following journal entry was written Friday, July 24, 1998:
With no air conditioning, and five people in one room, last night was hot and uncomfortable. I slept well, especially after taking some cold medicine procured at a local pharmacia. Today, I learned our stay in Venice would only last two nights. For this reason, I set out to see some major attractions. But first we needed to find a cheaper hotel/hostel to stay in. After a failed attempt at this, we returned to the Hotel Leonardo and got ready to check out. As we dropped the key off, we decided to bargain, by quoting the 29,000 lire price of a room we didn’t have. Since the guy knew he was ripping us off already, it didn’t seem hard to bring the price down to 28,000 lire per person, for one room (down from 40,000 lire).

According to Reuters, officials in Venice announced on May 4, 2007 that they will deploy stewards in St. Marks square in order to restore cleanliness and decorum to one of the world’s biggest tourist attractions.
"Six stewards, men and women, will explain to tourists that it is not a good idea to eat, camp out, lay down or walk around the city bare-chested," said the deputy mayor, Michele Vianello.
The stewards will not be handing out fines. They are only trying to keep a piazza that Napoleon once dubbed "the drawing room of Europe” from looking like a Walmart parking lot.
In a further move they are trying to ban fast food altogether from being sold on the square since this is apparently the main culprit in the sullying of the city, a protected UNESCO Wor | | By: Travelista
| | Gentrification of St Marks Square Venice | | 2007-05-09 12:10:51 | | The authorities in Venice have had enough of bare chested, napping, takeaway munching, litter dropping tourists. They’ve employed six stewards to maintain respect and decorum at the much visited square. The authorities are discouraging cafes from offering takeaways and would prefer visitors to sit at cafes or restaurants.

I can understand why the authorities want to clamp down on what they consider to be anti-social behaviour. However it is a bit difficult to be such a tourist magnet and only attract the “right type of tourist”.
I visited Venice for the day on a cloudy, cold Tuesday one February. It was still really full of tourists. It is a wonderful city and I’m glad I’ve been there. I would recommend that you stay somewhere close to Venice, such as Treviso. In Treviso you’ll feel as though you are in the real Italy and you can easily reach Venice for a day trip.

The following journal entry was written on Thursday, July 23, 1998:
When we arrived in Venice, I was still feeling ill. It was about 9 AM, and we had a full day ahead of us. After mulling around the train station a bit, we decided to find a place to stay right away. A man approached us from the Hotel Leonardo, who said he had a room for five people. Since it was only 10 minutes from the station, we decided to take it. When we got there, we found out our room was merely a double bed, with three single cots/mattresses wedged in. There was no room to walk. There was also a sink and a pisser in the room. Immediately after opening the window shutters, an Italian man across the alley from us began shouting at us. Apparently he didn’t like Americans. Since none of us knew what the hell he was saying, we just ignored his adamant rants.
We got ready to go to the beach. Our first mistake was buying a 35,000 lire ($20) vaporetto (water bus) pass. They never checked us (or anyone else). Thi | | By: GoBackpacking
