A dwarf form of the Doublefile Viburnum it has attained about a 4 foot by 4 foot size after 10 years. It is a reliable bloomer that has great fall color. It takes one of the most annoying characteristics of Doublefile Viburnum out of play, which is they often get way too big for where they are planted. When a Doublefile is planted in the wrong place it requires a lot of pruning, which ruins the arching graceful shape of the branches. I am on a big planting job in Westport (I’m actually a sub-contractor on this job) and they planted 7 or 8 huge Doublefiles along the road two years ago. Of course they were too close to the road and had to be pruned. Tomorrow I have to rip them out because they had completely lost their shape. The Viburnums and Elders (Sambucus) are two of the main shrubs in the family. I have been growing Burkwood Viburnum for a long time and it has seldom, if ever, disappointed me. They like a humusy, rich, moist soil and can grow in sun or part shade. I have seen them grow nicely on the north side of the house in a little more than part shade. It does to better in full sun as the foliage is a little glossier and there are more flowers. The main reason for growing this plant is the wonderful fragrant flowers. They bloom early in the spring (here) and can often perfume an entire garden area. There are several other attributes that make growing it worthwhile. The foliage, which is a lighter color underneath, is nice with some of the leaves exhibiti... | | By: Digital Flower Pictures.com | | |
