My heart goes to the love ones and victims, to all people especially the poor children who have suffered or lost loved ones on the May 3 devastating cyclone that hit Myanmar, a country in southeast Asia, formerly known as Burma. (According to Wikipedia, the name of the country was changed in 1989 and and this change of name has been officially recognized by the United Nations). Published reports says the death toll gone up to 34,273. It also said Tuesday that the number of missing now stands at 27,838. According to United Nations, the actual death toll could be between 62,000 and 100,000. Good God!My deepest sympathies to the families who have lost their beloved members. My thoughts and prayers.

Darlington claims its victims in Friday practice
    2008-05-09 17:12:19
DARLINGTON, S.C. -- The recently repaved Darlington Raceway proved to be just as tough on machinery as its former incarnation. No fewer than four drivers were forced to backup cars after incidents in Friday's two practice sessions, including defending Cup champion Jimmie Johnson.Johnson had just turned his quickest laps of the early session when he lost control of his No. 48 Chevrolet and hit the wall (watch video)."I hit the wall in Turn 1," Johnson said. "We worked hard over the night to make some gains and we ran two of the fastest laps and unfortunately I crashed on my third."I'm still trying to understand why we lost it. I lost it early on the straightaway before the corner, so something happened up on the straightaway."Johnson spun the backup car in the second session, damaging the left-front fender and splitter, but it appeared the team would be able to repair the damage in time for qualifying. Johnson said he couldn't remember crashing two cars in one day."Hey, we don't race un

Biggest settlement in RP aviation historyDALLAS, TEXAS—Insurance companies have agreed to pay $165 million to settle lawsuits brought by relatives of those killed in the crash of an Air Philippines Boeing 737 on Samal Island in 2000, said to be the biggest settlement in Philippine aviation history. The families of about 100 of the 131 people killed in the crash sued the United States companies that owned the plane and leased it to Air Philippines, accusing them of providing a worn-out plane in need of constant maintenance that the airline was incapable or unwilling to do.After legal fees of about one-third of the award, the families will get on average more than $1 million each, according to Donald J. Nolan, whose Chicago law firm took the lead in the case. The judge must still approve disbursements from a trust fund to individual families, which will receive varying awards. The lawyer said Air Philippines, owned by beer and tobacco magnate Lucio Tan, offered the families about $20,000

U.S. Catches Criticism For Its Treatment of Katrina Victims

Rapper Kanye West once suggested that the U.S. government dissed Hurricane Katrina victims because President Bush doesn’t like Black people. Now, the United Nations is looking into whether the United States actually violated a treaty on racism based on the way the government is treating survivors of the killer storm of 2006. On Friday, a U.N. panel – egged on by two advisers who have called the U.S. government’s decision to raze a swath of ramshackle low-income homes in New Orl

    Helping Accident Victims Needing Compensation
    2008-03-09 14:48:54
I think that it is only proper that a person receives compensation for an accident which was not the person’s fault. It is bad enough that a person has to live with the emotional & physical scars from an accident. At least with Accident Compensation, the money can help the person pay for medical treatment of the new injury felt now & in the future. It seems cruel for another person to be the cause of an accident & run free from responsibility of the damage done especially to other people. Keypoint Legal Services can help the folks in need of compensation. The legal firm can be contacted via phone; number is available on the website, snail mail; address available on the website too; & of course via email using the provided contact form on the website.Keypoint Legal Services are Personal injury & industrial disease specialists & help recover compensation for its clients. FEMA Will "Relocate" Katrina Victims Instead Of Kicking Them Out On The Street Like They Deserve
    2008-02-14 16:50:23
I'm getting sick and tired of coddling these "victims." Katrina was a tragedy, and no one is denying that. However, it was a tragedy that happened in August of 2005 ... two and a half years ago! Not only should every one of these people be back in the work force, and at a bare minimum renting apartments of their own, but there is countless cases of fraud being committed by these "victims." It is not them but us, the taxpayer, who are the real victims here. The reason there is formaldehyde in these trailers is because they are not meant to be lived in for extended periods of time. Everyone involved knows this and has chosen to ignore it in an effort to sacrifice themselves, and their children's health so they don't have to work. Then they can sue the government for more money. This is a classic case of sacrificing longevity for wealth and comfort.FEMA is not off the hook here either. They are so worried about the public's negative perception of them that they are refusing to do

British consumers victims of credit card fraud in India
    2007-12-11 04:29:00
For the second time in six months, hundreds of British citizens have become victims of international gangs who manage to clone credit card details here and withdraw money from their accounts in India, Philippines, Australia and Canada. In the latest instance, hundreds of villagers of Houghton on the Hill in Leicestershire have fallen victims. Their card details were reportedly cloned at a petrol station in the village, and soon found money being withdrawn from their accounts world-wide.In April, a similar scam was discovered in Buckinghamshire from where credit card details were cloned at a petrol station. A Sri Lankan embassy spokesman here had alleged when the scam was unearthed that it was linked to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) to fund its violent activities.Reports from Leicester say that in the latest instance, international gang members managed to install a fake card reader at the till inside the Houghton Garage, in Houghton on the Hill, and used it to clone custome

Victims respond to Sacramento Bee's pre-emptive attack on basic human rights
    2007-12-04 08:56:00
[UPDATED]In this article in the “Sacramento Bee”, a former US Ambassador to Burundi, Robert Krueger, urges that Burundi’s war criminals be awarded immunity from prosecution. Comments critical of this view have been posted in response, one of which has now been published. We reproduce it below:My sister Charlotte Wilson was murdered in Burundi on December 28th 2000, with her fiancé Richard Ndereyimana and 19 others, including a number of children. The killers were Hutu-extremists seeking “retribution” for the atrocities of the Tutsi-dominated army - and seeking, of course, to advance their own power. The families of the dead, and the survivors, want those responsible to be prosecuted as war criminals, fairly and impartially under international standards. We want this because we want action to deter future killings and prevent others from suffering as we have; a TRC alone simply will not work. To characterise this as a desire for “retributive justice” is a cruel form of bullying, which seeks to create a moral equivalence between our cherished hope of justice and the killers' twisted desire for revenge. We want justice, not vengeance, and it is our basic human right under international law. Amnesty and Human Rights Watch support us. Please don't deny us our rights, Mr. KruegerTake action - Fax your MP!Take action - sign the Gatumba petitionBurundi, human rights, Current Affairs, Politics, Africa

Burundi's victims want justice - An open letter to the Sacramento Bee
    2007-12-01 00:30:00
Dear Sir/Madam,As someone who has been personally affected by the conflict in Burundi, I found it ironic that Robert Krueger’s argument for "Truth and Reconciliation" was premised on a such a grotesque distortion of the facts.Mr. Krueger’s claim that “Burundi has already seen too much retributive justice without the UN adding more” is bizarre and misleading. If by “retributive justice” Mr. Krueger means the prosecution, under fair and impartial international standards, of those suspected of crimes against humanity, then it simply isn’t true that Burundi has seen “too much” of it. As readers can see for themselves by reading the excellent reports of Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, the defining feature of Burundi’s conflict has been the wholesale denial of justice to all but a handful of victims. Both groups argue compellingly that Burundi urgently needs more justice, not less of it, if peace is to be sustainable. “Retributive justice” is a derogatory term, which demonises as vengeful advocates of “retribution” those who simply seek to uphold their right, guaranteed under international law, to “an effective remedy by the competent national tribunals”. Burundi’s victims want justice, not vengeance. I would urge Robert Krueger to support them.Richard WilsonTake action - sign the petition for an end to impunity in BurundiBurundi, human rights, Current Affairs, Politics, Africa, Robert Krueger

Virtual flowers offered to Glorietta mall blast victims
    2007-10-24 20:00:00
By Erwin OlivaMANILA, Philippines -- Filipino blogger Ding Fuellos thought nobody would notice his simple act of extending his sympathies to families who have lost their loved ones in last week's mall blast that killed 11 people. "Everyone seems to be blogging about what happened, to the point of pointing fingers at every possible suspect in the country. Everyone is busy trying to know what the cause of the blast was. Every blogger is interested on the political angle, and its repercussions, too mechanical, too cognitive. But no one is paying attention to the mourners themselves. I would have written my own blog about this incident but what counted more was the fact that there seems to be no one expressing their sympathy to the families of the victims," Fuellos said in an e-mail interview. Fuellos, author of the Inkblot: Life Unravaled blog, has urged bloggers to offer their prayers and post a photo of a flower in their blogs. Initially, the response was not very encouraging. He dec

The recent response of some group of Japanese conservative politicians in response to US Congress has to this day in the twilight of their years has reaped upon the WW2 comfort women more abuse and insult. Not content with the harrowing experience they have subjected these women they have labeled them as prostitutes is the most despicable ignorance I have encountered. Could it be that to this day

Victims of Imperialism Need Remembrance Too!
    2007-06-18 19:59:00
As if the memorial to the Victims of Communism wasn't bad enough. Communists in Ukraine and Russia have decided to enter the battle over memory. In response to the Victims of Communism groundbreaking last week, Leonid Grach from the Ukrainian Communist Party has proposed "establishing a museum commemorating victims of U.S. imperialism." "American imperialism, from the extermination of native Americans to war crimes in Vietnam, Yugoslavia, Afghanistan and Iraq," Grach added, "has caused substantially more deaths than the 'orange forces,' along with their masters over the ocean, blame Communism for." Grach also asserted that the the Victims of Communism Memorial would certainly please the U.S.'s "vassal" Ukrainian president Viktor Yushchenko, whose government has sought to have the 1932-33 Ukrainian Famine declared a genocide.Grach's hasn't been the only response to the Victims of Communism Memorial. Russian Communist Party chief Gennady Zyuganov called President Bush "a sy

    Victims of Communism Remembered
    2007-06-12 21:50:00
The consecration of two memorials, one in the US the other in Russia, caught my attention as I was perusing the Russian news. The first is the so-called Victims of Communism Memorial which was dedicated in Washington DC today. The Memorial is the work of the Victim’s of Communism Memorial Foundation which seeks “to commemorate the more than 100 million victims of communism; to honor those who successfully resisted communist tyranny; to educate current and future generations about communism's crimes against humanity; and to pay tribute to those who helped win the Cold War.” As a whole the Foundation seeks to make combat the “moral blind spot” and “moral failure” of “free societies” to not equate Communism with Nazism. The Foundation’s origins date to HR 3000 which was sponsored by US Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, Senator Claiborne Pell, and Senator Jesse Helms and passed unanimously 17 December 1993 and then renewed in October 1998. The bill charged the National Ca

Debate on Virginia Tech Muslims Students' Mailing List Concerning Permissibility of Praying for Mercy for Non-Muslim Victims
    2007-04-25 13:40:00
The liberal Arabic-language website Aafaq reports that a Muslim student set off a debate when she sent an email to the mailing list of a Muslim students' association (rabitat al-tullab al-muslimin) at Virginia Tech asking the students to pray that Allah have mercy on those killed and wounded in the shooting attack at the university. According to Aafaq, the dean of student affairs at American International University, Abu Hamza Hijji, responded, writing that Allah the Most Merciful forbids praying for mercy for the non-Muslim dead, or even for the non-Muslim living, and that it is only permitted to pray that they be rightly guided. He added that what happened was a sad occurrence, but that does not give Muslims the right to transgress the laws of Allah the Most Merciful.More

Afghan government votes to deny justice to victims of war crimes
    2007-02-03 02:09:00
Afghan Council Urges War Crimes AmnestyKABUL, Afghanistan (AP) - Parliament has voted for an amnesty for leaders accused of war crimes during a quarter-century of fighting, arguing that it would help heal the deep divisions in Afghanistan. The amnesty resolution, passed in the lower house Wednesday, covers the mujahedeen leaders who led the resistance against the Soviet occupation of the 1980s and later turned their weapons on one another, plunging the country into civil war. Lawmaker Sayed Mustafa Kazmi, who backed the resolution, said it was aimed at fostering national unity. But rights activists have called for Afghanistan's factional leaders and warlords to face prosecution for the massacres and torture they allegedly committed in their struggle for power, especially during the 1992-96 civil war. Only justice, the rights advocates say, will heal the wounds of Afghanistan's traumatic past. But justice for the warlords would come at a political price. Several of the accused hold prominent positions in parliament and in the government of U.S.-backed President Hamid Karzai, who has shown little enthusiasm for charging them with war crimes. The resolution called for ``respect and honoring those who have participated in the holy war and resistance.'' Taliban and other militants who have laid down their weapons and joined the government should also be pardoned, it said. The United Nations reacted coolly to the amnesty. For national reconciliation to succeed ``the suffering of victims must be acknowledged and impunity tackled,'' the U.N. mission in Afghanistan said. ``No one has the right to forgive those responsible for human rights violations other than the victims themselves.'' The resolution follows a report from New York-based Human Rights Watch calling for Afghan officials - including Vice President Karim Khalili and Army Chief of Staff Abdul Rashid Dostum - to face trial before a special court. Human Rights Watch also listed Energy Minister Ismail Khan, p

International pressure can work: Drama as Burundi court acquits key figures in fictitious coup plot - Torture victims vow international legal action
    2007-01-20 03:25:00
Pressure forces acquittal of Burundi coup plotters - SA Mail and GuardianPressure from the international community, NGOs and civil society led to the acquittal recently of five alleged coup plotters imprisoned in Burundi in August this year. The men were arrested and charged with plotting to overthrow the government, but the accusations were widely believed to have been fabricated by elements in the government. Well-placed sources in Burundi said the judge’s decision to acquit five of the accused was a “political decision due to international pressure.”Five of seven alleged coup plotters, including ex-president Domitien Ndayizeye, were found not guilty of plotting to overthrow the government and were released after spending the past six months in jail. “It is a positive development which was very urgently needed,” Jan van Eck, a Burundi analyst told the Mail & Guardian. Van Eck says the alleged coup plot had been “destabilising the country, creating the impression that the government was becoming undemocratic, oppressing the opposition and not honouring the election promise to apply good governance”. This is “a step in the right direction,” he added. In 2005 the government of President Pierre Nkurunziza was elected in a landslide victory in the country’s first election since the end of a civil war that destabilised the country for over a decade. Explaining the decision, the spokesperson for the supreme court, Elie Ntungwanayo, said: “The court judged that the accusations lacked foundation. [Information was] based on testimonials by Alain Mugabarabona and Tharcisse Ndayishimiye, and [we] could therefore not rely on their sole testimonials as no other proof had been found.” Mugabarabona, a former rebel leader, and Ndayishimiye, who were imprisoned on the same charges, received hefty sentences of 20 years and 15 years in prison respectively, allegedly because they had confessed to planning a coup.“Since the two accused have confessed to having

Justice for the victims of the December 28th 2000 Titanic Express massacre
    2006-12-27 01:46:00
From WikipediaThe Titanic Express massacre was an event which took place on 28 December 2000, in which 21 people were killed in an attack on a bus, the “Titanic Express”, close to the Burundi capital Bujumbura. The passengers, who had travelled from Kigali in Rwanda, were robbed of their valuables and then separated according to their ethnicity. Hutus and most Congolese were released unharmed. The Tutsis on board, and one British woman, Charlotte Wilson, who was traveling with her Burundian fiancé, were forced to lie face down on the ground and then shot. According to news reports, one of the Hutu passengers had been told to "tell the army we're going to kill them all and there's nothing you can do."The attack took place in the province of Bujumbura Rural, a stronghold of the Hutu-extremist group Palipehutu-FNL (commonly known as FNL). The group is known for its hostility to the Tutsi ethnic group, and is believed to have carried out dozens of similar attacks in the same area. Although the FNL has denied responsibility for the "Titanic Express" attack, the Burundian authorities and a number of human rights groups have publicly blamed them for the massacre. In May 2001, the International Crisis Group attributed the Titanic Express attack to "troops under the order of... Agathon Rwasa". In January 2004 the Sunday Times announced the discovery of a document which appears to be an FNL report, signed by a senior commander, detailing how the Titanic Express massacre was carried out. In June 2006, detailed eyewitness accounts of the attack were published in the book 'Titanic Express: Finding Answers in the Aftermath of Terror'.Take action - Fax your MP!Take action - sign the Titanic Express petitionBurundi, human rights, Current Affairs, Politics, Africa
