| | Philippine lanterns illuminate Vienna Advent Festival | | 2007-11-26 18:26:00 | | VIENNA - The official lighting of lanterns from Pampanga province in the Philippines took place on November 19, 2007 in front of Vienna's City Hall. The San Fernando City government, through the initiative of Mayor Oscar Rodriguez, donated 60 San Fernando lanterns to the Philippine Embassy in Vienna. The lanterns decorate one of 11 trees in the Rathausplatz in the Christkindlmarkt grounds, one of the biggest and most popular Christmas markets in Europe. Hundreds of stalls on the vicinity of the city hall were being installed. The stalls offer European and exotic foods, drinks and a lot of Christmas souvenirs. Indeed, it was a "tiangge"-like atmosphere. The Vienna Christkindlmarkt runs for six weeks from the third weekend of November to Christmas Day. It attracts an estimated three million tourists from Austria and neighboring countries. The simultaneous lighting of the Philippine lanterns was officiated by Ambassador Linglingay Lacanlale and Dr. Elisabeth Vitouch from the Vienna city government. It drew admiration and applause from the audience, composed of diplomats from different Association of SoutheastAsian Nations member countries, the Philippine Honorary Consuls in Austria, officials of the Vienna City government, Austrian media, the Filipino community as well as the promenaders and visitors of the Christkindlmarkt. "In the name of the Vienna city government, I wish to express my heartfelt thanks the Philippine Embassy here in Vienna for the wonderful lanterns decorations. These unique lanterns from the Philippine add more color and festivity to our Advent Festival here in Vienna," said Dr.Vitouch during the lighting ceremony. She was the representative of Vienna Mayor Dr. Michael Häupl. Ambassador Lacanlale and Dr. Elisabeth Vitouch Ambassador Lacanlale expressed her gratitude for giving the Philippines the opportunity to exhibit these lanterns. "We are very proud to share with you not only a glimpse of Philippine Christmas but also the artistry and talent ... | | By: Angat ang Pinoy | | |

| | VIENNA: OPEC Likes American Currency, European Banks | | 2007-06-16 21:02:00 | | The oil-producing countries keep their money predominantly in Europe. According to the Bank for International Settlements, business, banks and central banks in those countries have about $1 trillion in bank accounts.Of that amount, 71 percent is in Europe, 15 percent in the United States, 12 percent offshore and 2 percent in other parts of the world. Europe's share in that division is growing steadily. In spite of common opinion, the dollar is not waning as a reserve currency. There has been no reduction in deposits in the U.S. currency in the last eight years, the BIS also says.In the U.S., the dollar accounts for nearly 100 percent of deposits, as well as for over half of all deposits offshore and in Europe. Several countries have even expanded their dollar assets. In spite of political declarations by Arab leaders, the portion of deposits held in dollars from OPEC countries has increased considerably. It was 50 percent in 2001-2003, and increased to 75 percent by 2006. | | VIENNA: Drive on biofuels risks oil price surge, OPEC | | 2007-06-07 11:50:00 | | OPEC has warned western countries that their efforts to develop biofuels as an alternative energy source to combat climate change risked driving the price of oil "through the roof". Abdalla El-Badri, secretary-general of the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, said the OPEC was considering cutting its investment in new oil production in response to moves by the developed world to use more biofuels. The warning from OPEC, which controls about 40 per cent of global oil production, comes as the group of eight leading industrialised nations meets today with climate change at the top of its agenda. The US and Europe want to use biofuels to combat global warming and to strengthen energy security. OPEC has previously expressed scepticism about alternative energy but Mr El-Badri's comments mark the first clear threat that the OPEC might act to safeguard its interests in the face of a shift towards biofuels. "They are really concerned," said Julian Lee of the Centre for Glo... | | By: energy BLOG | | |
