It takes a village... (OR- why my 4th of July weekend sucked)
    2008-07-07 12:37:00
Of idiots to ruin my 4th of July weekend. Bah.Let me just say that normally, I am a very tolerant person. I think I'm pretty nice to the people I kind of know, very nice to the people I love (but I do rule with a stern hand- sometimes an iron fist, I must say), and polite and accommodating to most strangers -unless they fall into the idiot category, then it's so on.I think that my polite kindness and my kind politeness may be considered my Achilles' heel, which makes me, in turn, a heel.I guess the best place to start would be the beginning, no? My 4th of July weekend started with me working. Hooray. People need their hot dog combos and popcorn, so I suppose someone has to do it, even if it's a holiday. It was OK though, we managed to work on the monstrosity of a swing set while the kids played on it's re-composing skeleton ( re-composing IT IS TOO a word, get over it), played in the pool and sand box... and I even grilled lunch, almost melting the grill's plastic hood.Anywho, later I

    Paleros Village Beach Resort
    2008-06-01 05:56:00
Located in western Greece the setting for our Paleros resort could hardly be more beautiful. A seemingly land-locked bay is surrounded by mountains and lush gardens. Close to the traditional Greek village of Paleros and the magical Island of Lefkas, it's perfect for action and exploration, as well as simply relaxing.Like all the Greek resorts, Paleros has generally excellent conditions for most watersports. However the often light breezes and exceptionally calm waters of the bay make it especially suited to waterskiing and wakeboarding. Both are offered free of charge.

    Malay Village closed
    2008-05-25 08:00:00
The Malay Village on Geylang Road has closed. I must admit I never visited this place, which has been described by many as a white elephant. Touring dusty exhibits of cooking implements and traditional games obviously couldn't attract enough visitors to make it a viable enterprise. It always seemed a little contrived to have a purpose built kampong as a tourist attraction, although I do find the kampong lifestyle enticing. I would much rather visit Pulau Ubin to get a feel of how Singapore would have been once-upon-a-time.Previously I wrote about the Malay Heritage Museum where there is a small replica kampong upstairs, and this museum is worth visiting. This museum is compact and also in a very interesting area (Kampong Glam) so it actually works in the context of its surroundings. It is important that the Malay cultural history be remembered and valued, so it is a shame that the Malay Village couldn't have been more vibrant and enticing.Did you visit the Malay Village? What are your t

    Spiritual Village In The Press

Woke up to a flux of congratulatory text messages early this morning informing me that Spiritual Village is in the news. Forgetting to wash up and still half-naked, I ran out to the streets to welcome the paper boy, much to his surprise. Grabbed the Sunday Star and flipped through all the pages to see what the excitement is all about. Wow, a two-page spread (p.8 and 9) in the Sunday Metro of Malaysia's leading newspaper, The Star, on my friend Andrew Khor & Spiritual Village.Restoring well-being Sunday May 4, 2008Sunday Metro, The StarStory and photos by GRACE CHENWhile finding ways to heal himself, a former copywriter experienced a spiritual awakening and became a holistic healer himself.THE copywriter who came up with the ‘Malaysia Boleh’ slogan is now a holistic healer who runs a centre to restore spiritual well-being.It was inevitable for this writer to come to the presumption that she would be hypnotised when Andrew Khor, 50, a holistic healer, dangled a pretty rose quartz

Changes Are Afoot in Teton Village
    2008-04-11 13:21:54
Teton Village, Jackson Hole’s premier ski resort, is undergoing one of the largest and most exciting transformations in its 40+ year history. Teton Village’s two iconic landmarks, the Aerial Tram and the Clock Tower, will be replaced this year with a larger, faster tram and an impressive new Clock Tower and Tram dock. In addition, Teton Village is also the home of a brand new, eco-friendly, luxury hotel that opened February 2008 and is also the site of Jackson Hole’s second five star hotel set for completion in 2010.Since Jackson Hole Mountain Resort’s beginning in 1967, no two landmarks have become more renowned than the Aerial Tram and the Clock Tower. The tram, affectionately known as the “little red box,” has given JHMR a leg up on competing ski resorts because of its unique ability to take 45 skiers at a time to the top of Rendezvous Mountain – a vertical rise of 4,139 feet - in just a matter of minutes. From Rendezvous, a myriad of trails and groomed runs can be ac

Newport Village on Monkey Island at Grand Lake in NE OK

Gated subdivision on the shores of Grand LakeNewport Village is a very attractive gated subdivision on Monkey Island at Grand Lake in NE Oklahoma. Cape Cod style homes line the waterfront shoreline and around man-made ponds in a park like setting. The full time caretakers look after your home in your absence, take care of grounds, and manage the upkeep of painting of homes every few years. It really makes a pleasant carefree second home experience at the lake. Most homes have a dock in the community slips. The association has a swimming pool, tennis court, volleyball, basketball, and swing sets for the kids. The area has many mature trees for a very secrene setting where the only rule is "you must have fun". Newport Village built in the 90's is kept in pristine condition and is one of the sought after addresses for lake home ownership for either full time or second home living.Call Aaron Hughes at 918 801-5645 or Joe Neill at 918 640-3300 for more info on Newport Village or o

Awesome 3d animation of a new urbanization proposal in Vietnam. Thank you Vnimation for sharing this reel. There are many ways to present large scale projects, I like the technique used here though, started off with the main feature (the skyscraper) and worked its way through the smaller villas (take note, all animated). And then around 50% into the presentation the feature is mostly concentrated on stills. Which is pretty nice if your able to produce a batch full and make some sort of slide show with it. This was of mixed media, and I find that innovating!

    Village Green Celtic Band
    2008-02-25 20:51:00
Way back in 1989 my good friend Laura Zaerr fiddler Roy Rowland, and Tom Creelan (R.I.P.) and myself were a band called Heather Breeze. We played for a couple of years but babies, careers, relationships and geography kind of got in the way. In 1995 when I was living in Mexico, Laura regrouped with three other musicians to form Village Green. I found out about the band and wanted to be in it but at that time they didn't think they could use me. So I got hired by The Nettles and played high energy dance music with them for five years. Meanwhile Village Green lost their box player and vocal bottom when she moved to Hawaii. After I had parted from the Nettles, Village Green decided they wanted me after all, so for the past 2.5 years we have been reworking the arrangements a few at a time to make some space for a piper. This winter we lost our flute player -- her career is taking off and she just can't spare the time. So Village Green is down to a threesome. That's the three o

The Courtyard Cafe in Johns Pass Village
    2008-02-08 19:42:00
My husband and I went to eat our dinner in my favorite Thai Restaurant again as I felt want to eat in there and my husband do not want to eatn Thai food but I insisted to eat there and he agreed. After we ate our dinner, we planned to buy some pastries in “Courtyard Café in John’s Pass Village. It is located in 13015 Village Blvd. in Madeira Beach and it is just about 5-7 minutes away by car and by walking is about 15 minutes. The cafe is just a new one and I hope it will stay in business. The Café has variety of selections of pastries, cookies, candies and cakes and my husband bought there few hours ago the coconut macaroon, almond cookie, carrot cake and cheesecake. The café outside has some chairs in there if you like to eat and the café is nice inside too. I took pictures while my husband choosing what he likes and you can see the tasty sweet food in here. Which one do you like? (lol)

    The Johns Pass Village
    2008-01-16 17:53:00
My husband and I just did walk around the John’s Pass Village tonight at about 7p.m. This place is a #1-tourist attraction, which many people come here buy some stuff like souvenirs, beach stuff and eat in a seafood restaurant. During summer time, many people come and go in here, as it is very popular as this Johns Pass Village has great restaurants by the water and it is romantic place here, because you can see the view of the nice ocean while eating. When we were here, we found out has a lot of change since we come this place before, it is getting much better as there are new building and they are renovated the old boardwalk. We come here sometimes when we walk on the beach or eat in the Thai restaurant. I love walking around here and see some fish, some pelicans flying around and sometimes when we are just walking and looking into the water we can see dolphins too.

Gstaad, The Romantic Mountain Village In Switzerland
    2008-01-11 18:30:00
Hubby and I last January 22, 2007, we went to Gstaad. We had planned to go up to the mountain but hubby forgot his pocket, so, we have only a little money and not enough to go to up mountain to ride the cable car, so we decided just roaming arround the city.Gstaad is the Romantic Mountain Village in Switzerland. Which is also more tourist to come and look the beauty of the City. and it is also twinned expertly with Cannes – is an odd place. You’d think, from the high profile of its name, that it would be some kind of glittering Geneva-in-the-Alps, a fantastically expensive mountain paradise. Yet although its instant name recognition may effortlessly attract Europe’s royal households, celebrities galore and countless lesser hangers-on, Gstaad is in fact just a one-street village, a rather charming, attractively located place full of restored weathered-wood chalets – even if there is an overabundance of jewellery shops and furriers. Nonetheless, its high-roller status makes it a village like no other. If you fancy being snubbed by the world’s richest people, come here for Christmas week, scene of a heady round of sparkling soirées and lavish banquet-style dinner parties all but barred to ordinary mortals. Glossy magazines may advertise the town as some kind of winter wonderland, but St Moritz steals its luxury-class thunder on this score: Gstaad is really more of a place to spend the odd ten grand renting a hillside chalet and sipping champagne around town than it is somewhere you can get stuck into any serious skiing. Where Gstaad really enters into its own, prosaically enough, is as a centre from which to hike the little-known Saanenland during the summer months.

    Village people
    2008-01-11 06:14:25
Several robbers impersonating policemen have been active in Luxembourg in the last days. They wear dark clothes, baseball caps, and speak French. On the pretext of checking something inside the house (a water meter, for example), they gain access to the victim's houses and steal whatever they can.The police has warned the population about this scam, and reminded that luxembourgish police officers speak luxembourgish. In case of doubt, call the nearest police station, and don't let anyone into your house. If you don't speak luxembourgish (more then 40 % of the residents are foreigners, according to STATEC) always call the nearest police station. This language issue can put a touch of manichaeism into the whole situation: speaking luxembourgish is good; any other foreign language is bad. (PS: Luxembourgish biker cops are easier to identify: think Village People!)Blogging in Luxembourg. In engrish.

Having my Christmas dinner at TKK Restaurant, Teluk Jawa (a.k.a. Megah Ria Seafood Village)(N1°28.606' E103°50.728')The meaning of 'TKK' is Tie-Kong-Kia in hokkien (means son of the god)! Of somebody call it Tan-Ku-Ku in hokkien (means long waiting). :)We ordered a few dishes like : Steam prawn, steam sotong (squid), Thai style slice cockle, vegetables and Hot plate Tofu (bean curd).Among all, I love the steam squid very much! The spice added was just marvelous! The environment is relax and not crowded. As you can see, there are two session in the restaurant.....typical seafood restaurant area and the romantic bridge area especially for couples or family.Live seafoods availableThe total cost of the dinner are MYR78.00. It's quite reasonable price from this good environment restaurant.

    Humor jokes-Village drugstore
    2007-12-11 03:51:29
The proprietor of a small village drugstore was called out one sleepy summer morning, leaving the establishment temporarily under the sole management of a very young, and very uneducated, clerk. "Just answer the phone if it rings, Jim," instructed the proprietor. The phone rang. "Hello," said the clerk."Do you have streptomycin and aureomycin?" asked a voice at the other end.The clerk scratched his head, then said, "Ma'am, when I said 'Hello' I told you everything I know!"

The tragedy at mahavilachchiya E-Village. A well thought out birthday gift for Piribaharan
    2007-12-03 03:32:45
Mahavilachchiya is a village in Anuradhapura, 245 km from Colombo which is surrounded by Vilpattu National Park from three sides and the children of Mahavilachchiya with Founder Mr Nandasiri Wanninayaka CEO of Horizon Lanka Foundation (HLF) are trying their best to make Mahavilachchiya a Model eVillage. The village of Mahavilachchiya got Internet connections before the village got telephone connections thanks to Mesh technology, a project, donated by UNDP. Mahavilachchiya was selected as the testing ground for Mesh technology as it was the village with the highest density of computers. Here farmers read online newspapers at home after a hard day’s work with the help of donated computers and Wifi-zones; children study English and IT after school and soon become computer geeks having their own blogs which has helped them, win laptops from donors.Kumar is a Tamil living in Mahavilachchiya. He was born and bred, and had his primary education in Kalatththewa, Anuradhapura. Guided probably by fate Kumar happened to come to Mahavilachchiya to work at a shop, there he met Mangalika, a beautiful Sinhala village girl, and it was love at first sight. He settled down at Mahavilachchiya with Mangalika and continued to support his brothers and sisters from there.Kumar missed his family, his childhood friends and many other things from his former life. But he could not leave his wife Mangalika, whom he loved dearly. So, for the last 30 odd years Kumar has been living in Mahavilachchiya.Kumar liked reading a lot and he used to read all the Tamil newspapers he could get hold of before coming to Mahavilachchiya. But now it was very difficult to find a Tamil newspaper in Mahavilachchiya. One has to go to Anuradhapura for that. Kumar could not afford to make this trip very often. So even very reluctantly, he had to say goodbye to his favorite pastime, reading newspapers. Then he found the answer, or to be more accurate, the remedy, for his loneliness with the advent of the mesh. His chi

    Italian Village Pizzeria
    2007-11-27 08:27:00
We were actually planning to have Steve and Yael over for dinner last night. I had planned an Asian style meal of Curried Carrot Soup, Beef Skewers on a bed of Fried Rice, Garlic Baby Bok Choy. I was in the middle of cooking when Lon and I started to smell a toxic odor. It turns out that the neighboring apt was staining the floors. We tried opening all of our windows and thought maybe the smell would go away. An hour later, I was developing a headache and Lon was nauseated. I was basically done with dinner at that point but I had to pack it all up so we could take Ice (our Jack Russell) and escape. So last minute, our plan had changed, we were in a cab and on our way to Kasi's (Lon's sister) apt and we had to figure out what to do with out dinner guests. Kasi generously offered to have Steve and Yael over and so we ordered in from Italian Village Pizzeria Italian Village Pizzeria(Kasi and Stephen's regular Italian place).Kasi and Stephen love Italian Village and Yael was really happ

Tower Village Becoming Toys "R" Us
    2007-08-14 18:48:00
I was in Greenwich Village yesterday, and I walked past my old haunt, the old Tower Records store on East 4th Street and Broadway (pictured). It has been empty since last December 22, when the chain officially closed for good. I had been wondering who was going to take over that very valuable piece of real estate. Yesterday I finally found out who will.I saw a sign in the window on Broadway that said that Toys "R" Us will be taking over, and they will be "open in time for the holidays." I would guess it will be up and running by late November, around Thanksgiving.I will definitely check out the new store when it does open. I would also bet it will be one of the more surreal experiences of my life when I do walk in there.I thought Tower would be there forever. I was proven wrong.

    Trunyan Village
    2007-08-09 02:52:08
Trunyan Village is located between Lake Batur and the outer crater rim of Mount Batur, and only accessible by boat. It is a Bali Aga village, inhabited by descendants of the original Balinese, the people who predate the arrival of Hindu Majapahit Kingdom in the 16th century.Trunyan Village is well-known for its Pancering Jagat Temple, but visitors are not allowed to enter. There are also a couple of traditional Bali Aga-style houses, and a large banyan tree which is said to be more than 1.100 years old. In Kuban Village, close to Trunyan Village, there is a mysterious cemetery, separated by the lake and is only accessible by boat.Unlike the Balinese people, the people of Trunyan do not cremate or bury their dead, but just lay them out in bamboo cages to decompose, although strangely there is no stench. A macabre collection of skulls and bones lies on the stone platform and the surrounding areas. The dead bodies don't produce bad smells because of the perfumed scents from a huge Taru Me

After a brainstorming session, members of the Yayasan Pembangunan Sanur concluded with a yearly event to bring the Sanur tourism community and the local community together through a week-long event dedicated to increase the cultural aspects of the area. Hence the Sanur Village Festival was established for the first time in 2006.This year the event will be held from 15 – 19th August 2007 at the Inna Grand Bali Beach and Segara Beach carrying the theme “Fun and Cultural Event”. Various activities allow opportunities for development and showcase of cultural skills as well as competitions to even exhibitions.Designed to be "bigger and better" than last year's inaugural event, the Sanur Village Festival 2007 is being organized by the Sanur Development Foundation - an organization comprised of Sanur Village residents and businesses dedicated to promoting a

Militants linked to al-Qaeda are reported to have staged a military parade in the village of Miqdadiya, in Diyala province north of Baghdad, to demonstrate their viability in the face of a massive US offensive in the area. Despite the presence of 10,000 US and Iraqi troops in the Sunni-dominated province, more than 250 militants took to the streets in a show of force, the news agency, Voices of Iraq, said.
