| Violence at Poolies Billiards! | | 2008-07-02 16:50:14 | | Just read an interesting piece of billiards-related news from Florida Today.com. It concerns about the police responding for a total of 22 times to Poolies Billiards on Palm Bay Road and 25 times to the Motel 6 on Malabar Road. And that was just in June 2008! And I kid you not! Talk about a one-of-a-kind news! More of the story here: Officers are called so frequently to several businesses, along with some residences, that Palm Bay Police Chief Bill Berger and City Manager Lee Feldman say they want the city's criminal hot spots to start paying up for excessiveresponses. "Certain locations -- businesses and residents -- are draining resources, to the point where you're continually having to send officers to that location," Berger said. "If they're monopolizing our services, they should be paying their fair share." The Palm Bay City Council will vote Thursday night on a proposed "Chronic Nuisance Premises Ordinance," which would allow the police department to charge per call for any | | By: The AnitoKid Chronikos | | |

| no violence? | | 2008-06-20 08:57:33 | | it was interesting to note that no violence of any real significance happened at the PAD protest today. I was half expecting some shootings and bloodshed on the streets near my apartment. as it were, nothing happened. ..thank god.so, rather than stay home tonight huddled in a corner, I've decided to venture back out to the lobby to hang out with whomever else found the courage to go out to.harrison ford called me up earlier to join him for dinner. but I declined at the time due to my fears of the situation.it is about 9pm now here in bangkok. time to get up, clean up, and make a move to the looooobby.my guess is - the thai baht will weaken a little because of the political events of the last few days. I wonder what it will be? 35 to 1?had a short messenger session with da brain earlier today. he is already to board the plane to come back to bangkok. just a couple of more days to go. moo-ka-tat, moo-ka-tat, moo-ka-tat.gotta go now. it's howdy doody time. | | By: Life of a Lounge Lizard | | |

The school had been criticized for using textbooks which included virulently anti-Semitic and anti-Christian language and teachings. Every now and then The HEADoc finds himself in an undesirable inescapable situation . . .
Last week The HEADoc was trying to forge an alliance with the most delicate of cases; a teenager facing the difficult reality of the first psychotic break of Paranoid Schizophrenia. Failing to make a trusting bond with such a patient could adversely affect his future treatment outcome in many ways. This is the type of case that can truly test the psychiatrist's clinical abilities. As the patient made an effort to let down his psychological walls of defense for the first time, a ruckus was undeniably overheard coming from the front. The situation seemed to be escalating. It was a drug seeker unable to obtain his drug of choice from the local ER after claiming to have unlikely side effects from what he had been prescribed by The HEADoc the previous week. | | Stop Dating Violence | | 2008-05-06 13:09:24 | | 6 May 2008Went to comb the NUS library for some good reads after examination today when I found this interesting booth display at the entrance.Entitled "Stop Dating Violence", the booth highlighted several indicators of an abusive relationship including "being insulted or called names", "hit, grabbed, pushed, slapped, kicked, punched or burnt", etc. It also described what is a healthy relationship and how one can protect oneself from violence.I find the message that the booth sought to convey as rather fresh, apparently deviating from the usual emphasis on promoting awareness of family violence. Now the focus is on BGRs.The Caption "Love Shouldn't Hurt" sums it all up.For more information on Dating Violence (as well as take a quiz to find out whether you are a victim of Dating Violence), please log on to http://www.family.gov.sg/stopfamilyviolence | | By: My Encounters, My Life
| | By: Recensioni Film | | |

Despite many who subscribe to the opposite belief system, I would like you to think about this statement I am making right now...
We don't have to use any weaponry at ALL in order to achieve peace on this planet of ours, as demonstrated by an organization called, Nonviolent Peaceforce which is comprised of a group of nonpartisan, unarmed, trained civilians from around the world.
Isn't this an amazing and exciting proposition?! Just imagine if more groups like these would begin springing up as days go by!!!!!!!!! :D

In response to threats of violence and vandalism, Chrysler boosted security and added police presence at its Belvidere, IL assembly plant Thursday. The rumors have been circulating all week, and are believed to be in response to the elimination of the third shift, which amounts to 1,069 workers being laid off this week, as announced in January. The added Chrysler security staff together with the police on-site are patrolling the plant and parking lots, searching workers’ bags as they enter the factory. These measures are in response to threats that refer to last month’s shooting at the nearby Northern Illinois University, which killed six, according to local media. There have been no reports of any trouble. The Dodge Caliber, Jeep Patriot and Jeep Compass, all of which share a common platform, are assembled at the Belvidere plant, which is one of five at which Chrysler announced it will end a shift. | | By: Auto News: Car Reviews, Car News, Car Shows

| | A History of Violence. David Cronenberg. | | 2008-01-14 07:21:00 | |
There’s something about A History of Violence from the first scene, something about the way the titles become part of the motel exterior. It’s a nice long tracking shot from Cronenberg, with a great (small part though) performance from Stephen McHattie. After the opening, Cronenberg spends a lot of time introducing Viggo Mortensen, Maria Bello and family. They live in a Hollywood-ized version of a small midwestern town (where everyone looks out for one another, where Bello has a son she had when she was eleven)--it’s a never never land, which is fine, because Cronenberg’s dealing with the role of violence in films here. He manages to make all the commentary on it he wants, while never once letting the characters slip from the most important position.
The film succeeds because of Mortensen and Bello. Bello’s good, but Mortensen is amazing. It’s been a while since the last time I read he was finally going to be big and Violence doesn’t show he can be a leading man... it shows he can act beautifully. The interesting thing about how Cronenberg treats Mortensen... he’s never anything but the protagonist. He never loses the viewer’s identification. Even when he’s scaring the hell out of everyone around him, he’s still the good guy. Because it’s a Hollywood movie. It’s not in the sense one could see Brad Pitt in the lead, but Cronenberg knows very well he can’t comment on Hollywood’s approach to violence without making the film Hollywood.
There is some distraction, given the high schoolers all being mid-twenties or later. I’m guessing it doesn’t have to do with Cronenberg commenting on... the Beach Party movies, but rather... well, regular Hollywood casting practices.
Cronenberg offsets the violence and the implications of it and Mortensen and Bello’s respective inner turmoil with a couple fantastic performances. First, Ed Harris. Harris plays a creepy mobster and he’s a joy to watch, but it’s not a stretch for him. Ed Harris doesn | | By: The Stop Button
| | Kenya tourism hurt by images of violence | | 2008-01-11 06:32:00 | | Kenya's game parks usually teem with camera-toting tourists at this time of year. Now they are all but empty after images of deadly clashes that rocked the country were beamed around the world.Operators say pictures of machete-wielding youths battling riot police and of a torched church that evoked nightmares of the Rwandan genocide, have sent some tourists packing and others delaying trips or scrapping planned visits outright.A minority have bravely chosen to see out their holidays."We have never felt like we were in danger," said Debbie Shillito, a Canadian relaxing by the pool of a lodge in the Samburu Game Reserve, the only tourist in sight. "Our biggest fear was that our trip would be cancelled."Protests and clashes following President Mwai Kibaki's re-election have killed 500 people. His rival, Raila Odinga, believes he was cheated of an election win and the controversy has triggered bloodletting displacing more than 250,000 people.Tourism industry players say the violence, which has been in isolated places and usually far away from where tourists stay, has portrayed the whole country as a basket case and no-go zone.Tourism is Kenya's biggest foreign exchange earner and supports about a million people. Many western countries, including Britain -- Kenya's biggest source market -- have slapped travel bans on non-essential visits, meaning insurance firms won't cover anyone going there. As a result, bed occupancy across the country has fallen to around 20 percent, when it would normally have been above 85 percent at this time, the industry's peak season."Phones are not ringing with new bookings. That is the main concern for us," said Peter Mbogua, sales and marketing manager for the Serena Group of hotels. "And the phones will not start ringing until the perception created is changed."Mbogua said the Mara Serena in the Maasai Mara Game Reserve, famous for its annual wildebeest migration, was just 40 percent occupied. Usually in January it would be nearly full. | | By: Most Popular Tourist Places | | |

| | The Machine Girl Movie Trailer - Mindless Violence at its Best | | 2007-12-09 13:19:51 | |
This is so bad, that it’s good. I almost thought that this was a spoof of Tarentino’s Grindhouse and Kill Bill movies, but it’s actually the official trailer for ‘The Machine Girl‘ (Kataude Mashin Gâru), a Japanese exploitation flick.
The movie is about the quest of Ami, a teenage Japanese girl out to avenge her brother’s death at the hands of a crime family. Without giving anything away, the movie trailer has enough Ninjas, Yakuzas, chainsaws and gallons of fake blood to whet the appetites of even the most exacting devotees of the exploitation genre.
The trailer is absolutely not suitable for kids and people with weak stomachs.

Violence is on the rise in Afghanistan; it has been the most violent year since the war began. At the same time we are seeing a decrease in violence in Iraq. We have been told that this decrease is due to the troop surge, but I now wonder if some of that decreased violence is a result of the announcement of the surge. I still find myself troubled by the fact that we announced our military intentions to the enemy. I feel this gave them time to develop a plan to deal with the surge. Is it possible that the enemy's plan was to pull out of Iraq and move their operation to Afghanistan? Some people have commented that having a surge was going to be like playing wac-a-mole. Of course, those people figured the enemy would move around Iraq. With the increase in violence in Afghanistan it is possible that the enemy moved there.Since the invasion of Iraq it seems that Afghanistan has been put on the back burner. A women gets disciplined by her husband. Maybe she was a bitch, maybe she was a slut, maybe she did not fulfill her duties. It’s not our business to know. The husband knows and that should be good enough for us. It’s between him and her. A good woman will always submit to the will of her husband no matter what. The notion of the so called “domestic violence” or “domestic abuse” should not even come up, because in the majority of “abuse cases” we should trust the husband to use his good judgement to despense praise as well as punishment. It is not our right to get involved. The role of a woman in our society is outlined as follows: Be obedient, cheerful, | | By: IBIBO

Morewitz Paperback: 150 pagesPublisher: Springer; 1 edition (December 31, 2002)Language: EnglishISBN: 0306473658Stalking and Violence: New Patterns of Obsession and Trauma provides new perspectives on the prevalence, causes, and effects of stalking in intimate and non-intimate relations. Drawing on the results of a large random survey of restraining orders, this book found that stalking is highly prevalent in a variety of relationships and is a pattern of behaviors that is routinely regulated by the demographic and social characteristics of the victims and offenders. This book demonstrates that it is possible to develop reliable stalker profiles to help better detect and respond to the threat of stalking. These findings differ from previous studies that considered stalking limited to severely disturbed persons. The current government swept to power in a landslide election in August 2005 pledging to restore order.Diallo noted that abuses by Burundi's national intelligence service, the Service National de Renseignement (SNR), had grown significantly worse over the past few months, with its agents carrying out arbitrary arrests and torturing detainees suspected of being allied to Burundi's last active rebel group, the Forces nationales de libération.Bodies foundIn an October report, an international watchdog, Human Rights Watch (HRW), accused the SNR of torture and possible involvement in extrajudicial killings that it said went unpunished."Intelligence agents are believed to have been involved in the killing or presumed killing of at least 38 people over the past year," the report said. "Thirty-one people are currently missing and presumed dead in Muyinga [province in the north] with several bodies and body parts having been found in a local river."HRW said that in July, people in Muyinga told human-rights organisations that family members had been arrested and could not be found. At least seven bodies were recovered from the region's River Ruvubu. | | The Religious Roots of Violence: Islam IV | | 2006-09-04 23:28:00 | | not one of the 70 virgins: his niece is cute (Previously on the LHG: The Religious Roots of Violence: Islam I, II, and III)Osama Bin Laden:This is also where Bin Laden comes in: Osama's dad had a flair for palace building and over the years royal favor turned his family business into the largest construction company in Saudi Arabia and one of the largest in the Middle East. The Bin Laden children were raised and educated with Saudi princes and had contact with leaders of Islamic movements all over the Muslim world. Soon after the Soviet invasion of Afganistan Bin Laden started to raise money for the resistance. By 1984 he had established a guest house in Peshawar to house fighters bound for the front. In 1988 he established a database of all the jihadists and other volunteers who had passed through his camps - giving birth to an organizational structure built around a computer file whose Arabic title Al Qaeda (the [data] base) would become famous later. When Bin Laden returned to visit Saudi Arabia he warned the Saudis that Iraq was planning to invade Kuwait. This embarrased the Saudi government which at the time was on good terms with Hussein. When the Iraquis did invade Kuwait in 1990, Bin Laden offered his fighters to defend the Saudi kingdom. Instead of accepting the offer, the Saudi government accepted US military assistance. This convinced Bin Laden that the Saudi's Islamic credentials were a sham. For him, driving out the Americans is the condition for reclaiming Islam in the peninsula. In 1996 he issued a "Declaration of Jihad against the Americans Occupying the Land of the Two Holy Places: Expel the polytheists from the Arabian Peninsula." And on August 7th of 1998, on the anniversery of the arrival of American troops in Saudi Arabia, two huge explosions rocked the US embassies in Nairobi Kenya and Dar es Salaam Tanzania. | | The Religious Roots of Violence: Islam III | | 2006-08-27 23:20:00 | | better than santa claus(Previously on the LHG: The Religious Roots of Violence: Islam I and II)Saudi Arabia: Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab (1703-1791) and the Wahhabi movement.Al-Wahhab regarded the condition of Arabia of his time - land of Muhammad - as corrupt and idolatrous. He and his followers set out to purge Islam of what they considered impure going as far as to destroy the tomb of Muhammad and his Companions in Mecca and Medina.Wahhab combined religious zeal and military might when he allied with Muhammad ibn Saud, a local tribe chief, to form a religious and political movement. Eventually Saudia Arabia was created: the kingdom merged the political and religious; it was and is led by a succession of kings from the House of Saud with the close support of the religious Wahhabi establishment.Today the Saudis export this extreme and militant version of Wahhabi Islam to other countries and communities. They offer development aid, build mosques, fund and distribute religious tracts and commision religious scholars. And provide financial support to extremist groups who follow militant brands of Islam worldwide. Afghanistan:In December of 1979 the Soviet Union invades Afghanistan; and this provides an opening for Saudia Arabia to retake leadership of the radical wing of Islam. Afghanistan allowed the Saudi government to shield the US from radical Islamic activists, making sure that the Soviet Union would replace the US as their main scapegoat. In the training camps around Peshawar - the capital of the Pakistani NW frontier province where three million Afghan refugees were living - thousands of Islamic radical fighters converged from all over the Muslim world. An international group of Islamic militants, willing to fight worldwide for the sake of their radical understanding of Islam, emerged. They were funded by Saudi Arabia, and the US who provided military support and training.Think about it: you've got three million refugees and Islamic radicals converging in Pe | | By: The Left Hand of God
| | The Religious Roots of Violence: Islam II | | 2006-08-23 23:44:00 | | here's looking at you, kid(Previously on the LHG)To uncover the roots of today's mess in the Middle East, you need to look at the interplay between Iran, Saudia Arabia and Afganistan that began with the Iranian Revolution.Iran:In the 50's and 60's many Muslim states were governed by modernizing rulers who tried to suppress Islam and follow what they understood to be the US's and Europe's secular example. They thought that if they could just imitate the "West" their nations would prosper. They were wrong. Economic progress did not follow the closing of mosques and religious schools, the banning of the headscarf and imitation of Western dress. Opposition grew, and no opposition had greater impact than the 1979 Iranian revolution that, led by Ayatollah Khomeini, overthrew the Shah of Iran and set up a theocracy, an Islamic government run by Islamic scholars which he himself led. Most importantly, however, the Iranian revolution also defined itself in opposition to Saudia Arabia. There emerged a struggle for leadership of the Islamic world. Regimes in Muslim countries viewed the Shah's fate as a lesson, and many of them became ostentiously religious in response. The Muslim world had been under Saudi religious domination since the late sixties: Saudi Arabia claimed to be an Islamic state, was guardian of Islam's holiest sites, had oil and thus lots of money to spread its views around the Muslim world. After 1979, however, the new masters in Iran considered themselves the true standard bearers of Islam. As far as they were concerned, the leaders in Saudi Arabia were usurpers who sold oil to the West in exchange for military protection - a US backed monarchy with a facade for ostentatious piety.(to be continued) | | By: The Left Hand of God | | |
| | Introduction to violence at work | | 2006-08-13 01:02:00 | | Violence is rapidly becoming an everyday reality for many workers, from bus drivers to teachers, bank security personnel, nurses and air crews faced with mounting cases of air rage among passengers. But shrouding it in silence and secrecy is counter-productive. Many remedies exist, including security measures, surveillance, organizational solutions and the training of staff in how best to diffuse potentially violent situations. In most cases, these remedies are extremely cost-effective in terms of reduced medical and personnel costs and improved performance. But they can only be applied effectively once the problem has been acknowledged and brought out into the open. Experience in this and allied fields strongly suggests that the most effective solutions are obtained when the issue is addressed by an active partnership of all the actors concerned.Governments, trade unions and employers are increasingly worried by what is emerging as a major workplace concern. The response at the national and international levels is taking shape. The European Commission is analysing the action to be taken for the prevention of workplace violence in the European Union as part of its current programme on safety, hygiene and health at work. All around the world, further surveys and studies are being carried out to identify the main problem areas. Innovative experiments are underway to assess the feasibility and effectiveness of different solutions to the problem. However, the new information and ideas resulting from these initiatives are only now starting to become available. This introduction to violence at work is intended to provide brief answers to a number of questions. These include: How great a problem is violence at work? What forms does it take? Which sectors and occupations are most affected? To what extent are women particularly vulnerable, with special reference to sexual harassment? What is the cost of violence at work to the individual, the company and society? Do we under | | By: SAFETY AND PUBLIC HEALTH SERVICE INFORMATION | | |
| | The Religious Roots of Violence: Islam | | 2006-08-10 09:40:00 | | somos los piratasExile is the second key story line in Western religion that shapes violent images of God. Notice that the Exodus story is a story about God's liberating violence. But what if instead of defeating your enemies you are always getting your ass kicked? What if instead of living in the Promised Land you are always living under foreign rule? How do you make sense of that? While Exodus is a story in which God uses superior violence to free an oppressed people; exile, on the other hand, is a story where God uses violence to punish the chosen people for their sins. If Exodus was a story of God's liberating violence; then the exile is a story of God's punishing violence. Obey God and prosper. Disobey God and suffer. This theme of exile is key to fundamentalist interpretations of Islam today. Islam was once a great empire, far superior in wealth and culture than Western Europe. How then does one explain why the Islamic empire declined and gave way to domination by imperial, capitalistic, and mostly "Christian" nations? The logic is simple: if fidelity to God leads to historical prominence, then historical decline is caused by lack of fidelity to God, Muhammad, and the Qur'an. As the charter of Hamas states: Hamas "found itself at a time when Islam disapeared from life. Thus, rules were broken, concepts were vilified, values changed, and evil people took control; oppression and darkness prevailed, cowards became tigers; homelands were invaded, people were scattered…When Islam is absent from the arena, everything changes." From this perspective, Israel's occupation is seen as punishment from God for deviations from Islam. Thus independence, development, dignity will be achieved only by a return to Islam, the re-Islamization of societies that have become lax and therefore weak.(to be continued) | | By: The Left Hand of God | | |
| | The Religious Roots of Violence: Judaism III | | 2006-08-08 00:10:00 | | Wishing he was an only child(Previously on the LHG)In 1979 a small group of Jewish women and children from Kiryat Arba crawled through the window of an abandoned hospital in Hebron, occupying it illegally and establishing a a Jewish settlement on the site, Beit Hadassah. In time the settlement grew to more than fifty families with some 450 Jews sequestered in what amounted to an armed fortress in a city of more than 100,000 Muslims. The land is sacred, it is Jewish sacred land, and the Jews must take what is theirs by divine right. A Jewish text records the debate of sages 1800 years ago on why Cain murdered Abel. By naming what drove Cain to kill, each sage meant to identify the source of human violence. According to one, a twin sister was born with Abel and the brothers fought over who'd possess the only available woman. Another sage argued that the brothers agreed to divide everything in the world between them. One claimed the shirt on his brother's back and ordered him to strip; the other claimed the ground under his brother's feet and shouted, "fly." Blows followed, then blood. The third sage, a Rabbi Levi, also said the brothers agreed to split the world. But then, he said, one claimed the land where Israel would reside, the other insisted it was his, and "Cain rose up against his brother Abel, and slew him." The history of fratricide began, said Rabbi Levi, with a fight over the Holy Land.Sources:Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer, Is Religion Killing Us?Gershom Gorenberg, The End of Days | | By: The Left Hand of God | | |
