| Today is One Year Anniversary of Virginia Tech School Shooting | | 2008-04-16 12:29:28 | | One year ago today, a mentally disturbed young man by the name of Cho Seung-Hui was able to purchase a gun and walk into this college and kill 32 people.
Today I will not dishonor the family and friends of those who lost their lives by listing the "what ifs" on this day of deep sorrow and mourning, but I WILL hope that we would have learned by this devastating tragedy so that it will never happen to any of us ever again.

| | [Wikipedia] April 16: Virginia Tech massacre | | 2008-04-15 23:01:37 | | The Virginia Tech massacre was a school shooting comprised of two separate incidents about two hours apart on April 16, 2007, on the campus of Virginia Tech. The shooter killed thirty-two people and wounded twenty-three others before committing suicide, making it the deadliest shooting in U.S. history. The perpetrator had been court ordered to seek treatment at the university's Cook Counseling Center seventeen months earlier, but the order was neither obeyed nor enforced. Additionally, the university's administration had failed to heed warnings from the shooter's professors on numerous occasions. The incident sparked intense debate in the U.S. and globally about gun violence, gun laws, gaps in the U.S. system for treating mental health issues, the perpetrator's state of mind, the responsibility of college administrators, privacy laws, journalism ethics, and other issues. The incident prompted immediate changes in Virginia law that had allo | | By: Gopal's Blog | | |

| | | Clemson Virginia Tech Preview | | 2008-03-07 13:38:48 | | Virginia Tech @ Clemson SunOne of these teams is pretty sure they are in; the other one thinks they are in, but a win would ease their nerves. Both Clemson and Virginia Tech will have winning ACC records, but would like 1 more conference win just to cement their status. No team with 9 ACC wins has ever been left out of the NCAA Tournament, but the Hokies weak non conference schedule could put them at risk if other conferences have a lot of upsets in their tournaments. So on to the game...I like Clemson's rebounding ability in this match up at home where they have been very good this year.Prediction: ClemsonClemson Virginia Tech line spreadThe Tigers should be around -200 on the moneyline and 6-8 points on the spread.Season: 66-20 (77%)ACC: 34-12 (74%) | | By: ACC SEC Blog | | |
| | Georgia Tech Virginia Tech Weather Watch 2008 | | 2008-02-22 22:10:33 | | si.comGeorgia Tech @ Virginia TechI would think Paul Hewitt has a right to be mad. In his team's last game they turned the ball over a season high 22 times and lost by 1. Then on Thursday, a home game with Virginia was canceled due to a leaky roof. Nevermind that Georgia Tech is paying their former football coach $1M per year for nothing. The Hokies have a distinct honor in the ACC; they are the only team to lose to Tech in Atlanta. The Yellow Jackets have been very good on the road though. Virginia Tech needs good wins like they had against Maryland and more importantly must hold serve at home. For Georgia Tech to win they need to take care of the ball (15 or less turnovers) and play good perimeter defense where they have lacked most of the season. Logic would say Virginia Tech is the better team and they are at home, but I like Georgia Tech to pull this one off on the road.Prediction: Georgia TechVirginia Tech Georgia Tech lineThe Hokies will be the favorite in this game and w | | By: ACC SEC Blog | | |

They have one of the best defensive ends in Chris Long who ranks 5th nationally in sacks. The other 10 guys are also getting it done – the defense ranks 10th nationally in scoring defense and 20th in rushing defense. The Hokies are no slouches on defense either. Virginia Tech is coming off a last second, heart breaking loss to Boston College last Thursday, while Georgia Tech was off last week and dismissed Army the previous week. Both teams are still in the hunt for a Coastal Division title, but the Hokies are in a much better position with just 1 loss to Georgia Tech’s 3. The Yellow Jackets have to win out and have a lot of help to make it back to Jacksonville for a second straight year.Key Matchups:Virginia Tech QBs vs Georgia Tech Pass RushTrue freshman Tyrod Taylor injured his ankle against Duke a few weeks, but has his cast off and has been practicing all week. | | Report Claims Virginia Tech Officials at Fault for Not Alerting Students | | 2007-08-30 23:59:24 | | On the day of this horrible, horrible event, as soon as I heard the details on the news, I immediately condemned the school officials for their lax response in notifying the student body.
As I had said in my blog post right after the shooting, there is a service called Lockdown Alert, where parents can receive a school lockdown notice on their cell phone or via email by using this free service.
My heart goes out to the families and friends of the people who were killed and are reliving this devastation again.

| | Debate on Virginia Tech Muslims Students' Mailing List Concerning Permissibility of Praying for Mercy for Non-Muslim Victims | | 2007-04-25 13:40:00 | | The liberal Arabic-language website Aafaq reports that a Muslim student set off a debate when she sent an email to the mailing list of a Muslim students' association (rabitat al-tullab al-muslimin) at Virginia Tech asking the students to pray that Allah have mercy on those killed and wounded in the shooting attack at the university. According to Aafaq, the dean of student affairs at American International University, Abu Hamza Hijji, responded, writing that Allah the Most Merciful forbids praying for mercy for the non-Muslim dead, or even for the non-Muslim living, and that it is only permitted to pray that they be rightly guided. He added that what happened was a sad occurrence, but that does not give Muslims the right to transgress the laws of Allah the Most Merciful.More | | By: THE NEW BABYLON TIMES | | |
| | Could Antidepressants Explain the Virginia Tech Massacre? | | 2007-04-24 18:28:00 | | A variety of news sources have reported that Cho Seung Hui, the Virginia Tech shooter who killed 32 students and faculty members in a shooting rampage, was taking antidepressant drugs.Antidepressants have also been used by the perpetrators of previous and similar acts of violence, including the shootings at Columbine High School eight years ago. There are known links between antidepressants and violent acts. Research on the drug Paxil found that more than twice as many people taking it experienced a serious "hostility event" as did those taking a placebo. In the United States, labels for all antidepressants note that anxiety, agitation, panic attacks, irritability, hostility, aggressiveness, impulsivity, and mania are all possible side effects.Part of the cause may be the disconnect with reality these drugs sometimes reportedly cause. In another study of the links between antidepressants and violence, a 12-year-old boy who killed his grandparents while he was on a course of antidepressa | | By: Full Time Income From Home | | |

| | Virginia Tech Through Russian Eyes | | 2007-04-18 22:31:00 | | As I’m putting finishing touches on a chapter on the legacy of the Russian Civil War in the Komsomol, I couldn’t help pausing for a moment to reflect on the Virginia Tech massacre. The move is in line with my current work since I am looking at the effects of war trauma and violence on Komsomol youth. Events in Virginia are probably already well known to most, so I won’t bother recounting those. And I’m sure the army of psychologists, law enforcement experts, gun control advocates, social critics, and pundits will do well to peel the layers of this incident in hope to make some sense of it. In my view, there is something awry in American society. Sure some may dismiss America as a source for the tragedy. After all, they will say, Cho Seung-Hui was a South Korean national, not an American. But his rampage did not happen in South Korea and calculating the metrics of how much he was “assimilated” into American society will not provide many answers. Maybe I was just slow in receiving the news today, but I didn’t find out about this until 3-ish. All I could think when I was reading it was this probably isn’t my teachers mean when they say we’re watching history in the making. What’s more chilling is that I have no doubt that someone’s going to break this record because this is how things work; even if we don’t want it.
To a very superficial level, I can sort of understand the feeling that you have to lash out at everyone–anyone– because of all the rage and hurt that’s been bottled up. You want to hurt someone and anyone will do and since you’re going to kill yourself, you might as well inflict harm to as many people as possible, right?
