Skin Care Tips With Vitamin C Skin Care Products
    2008-07-19 00:00:00
Vitamin C is often regarded as a wrinkle fighter or an anti-aging agent. The main function of Vitamin C is to increase the synthesis of collagen which is a structural protein that is found in skin. Collagen, along with soft keratin, it is responsible for skin strength and elasticity, and its degradation leads to wrinkles [...]

Forget The Vitamin D Supplement -- Eat Eggs From Happy Chickens...
    2008-07-18 09:02:00
A new study gives Vitamin D a grade of A+ for prolonging life after colon cancer. Patients diagnosed with colon cancer who had abundant vitamin D in their blood were less likely to die during a follow-up period than those who were deficient in the vitamin, according to a new study by scientists at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. The findings of the study -- the first to examine the effect of vitamin D among colorectal cancer patients -- merit further research, but it is too early to recommend supplements as a part of treatment, say the investigators from Dana-Farber and the Harvard School of Public Health. In a report in the June 20 issue of the Journal of Clinical Oncology, the authors note that previous research has shown that higher levels of vitamin D reduce the risk of developing colon and rectal cancer by about 50 percent, but the effect on outcomes wasn't known. To examine this question, the investigators, led by Kimmie Ng, MD, MPH, and Charles Fuchs, MD, MPH, of Dana-Farber, analyz

Vitamin P For Skin Care Treatment
    2008-07-13 09:08:50
Vitamin P isn't a vitamin per se, but it is classified as a vitamin to speak for a variety of bioflavonoids. Bioflavonoids are not produced by our bodies, so we need a supplement or skin care product to deliver this special component. Vitamin P enhances the action of Vitamin C. As we know, Vitamin C is plays an important role in strengthening our immune system and it helps the skin repair and renew. This is one of many reasons that we need bioflavonoids in our diet or skin care products. Bioflavonoids have a variety of benefits for our bodies and skin. Studies show that bioflavonoids stop or slow the growth of malignant cells. Vitamin P also acts as a natural antibiotic for our bodies, ridding of infection and fighting off illness and viruses. The bacteria fighting properties in bioflavonoids destroy bacteria found in our foods, so it protects us against food spoilage and food poisoning.Vitamin P is also good for the treatment of injuries because they act as a pain reliever. Okra Is High In Folate (Folic Acid) an Important Vitamin For Preventing Birth Defects
    2008-06-17 09:27:00
Okra is higher in folate, a natural vitamin B, than even spinach and if you are planning to get pregnant, now is the time to make sure you get enough folate in your diet. Odds of infant neural tube defects can be slashed with folate. To keep your fetus safe, you must get at least .4 milligrams of folate before you get pregnant. There is no time to act afterwards because the defect occurs in the first 28 days after conception, before most women know they are pregnant.Folate is a water-soluble B vitamin that occurs naturally in food.Folic acid is the synthetic form of folate that is found in most supplements and added to fortified foods.Folate helps produce and maintain new cells. This is especially important during periods of rapid cell division and growth such as infancy and pregnancy. Folate is needed to make DNA and RNA, the building blocks of cells. Both adults and children need folate to make normal red blood cells and prevent anemia. Folate is also essential for the metabolism of

If A Vitamin Label Says "Whole Foods" Is That What's In It? Think Again...
    2008-06-13 09:00:00
When I see brands like Whole Foods I think of something healthy made from whole foods. After all it says "Whole Foods" on the package. I was surprised today when I opened a package for the multivitamin trade program and saw "Whole Foods Daily Multivitamin." I've placed dozens of orders since this trade program started and I expect to get store brand multis and lots of One A Day multis. Since I was clear that anyone could trade any brand of "synthetic" multi for a whole food multi I was ready to return this "whole foods daily" to the sender. I can't let people trade their whole food multis for ours so I was prepared to send it back with a note saying they were already using a whole food multi. That's until I looked at the Supplement Facts. I was surprised and disappointed to see every ingredient was synthetic. I expected more from a grass roots Whole Foods company. I have nothing against this company, in fact they are pioneers in offering organic foods and helping the "clean – real f

Vitamin Doesn't Work As Claimed Because It Doesn't Dissolve - Study
    2008-06-12 10:31:00
This new study shows a popular vitamin supplement aimed at diabetics is not as effective as most advertisements for it claim because it does not dissolve. The study published in the journal BioMed Central found that benfotiamine -- a synthetic derivative of the vitamin B1 -- does not actually dissolve and penetrate cell membranes as well as often claimed.Vitamin B1, or thiamine, plays a key role in keeping cells healthy, and previous research has shown that diabetics have less of it in their blood.Simple lab tests showed that benfotiamine as sold to consumers was not lipid-soluble -- which means it did not dissolve in organic solvents and oils to boost health by working quickly."It did not dissolve so it can't work its way through the membranes," Bettendorff said in a telephone interview. ReutersDid you see this article about pills not dissolving in your body and ending up in the septic tanks? This is one thing that is wrong with any synthetic pills. Here's another view on pills stuck in

    Natural Vitamin Origins
    2008-06-04 06:34:00
There are plenty of people who do not have adequate natural vitamin sources in their diet and hence suffer from a lack of one or more vitamins. Evidently, it is feasible to purchase vitamin supplements to help get over any deficiencies but for the bulk of people it should be possible for them to get the majority of their suggested daily allowance of vitamins from natural vitamin sources. New Coke Vitamin Water (Bottle of snake oil not included)
    2008-05-30 09:58:08
Tales of Coke's ability to dissolve a set of choppers in a glass overnight or to put a sheen on a rust-stained kitchen sink might be urban legends (we ended up eating the T-bone we had soaking in a vat of the stuff, so we can't comment conclusively on that one, but don't recommend this method of preparation to diabetics), there is no doubt that the soft drink has ruined many alcoholic beverages. As far as we're concerned, Coke is the sine qua non wimp-additive for those who can't handle their liquor, and responsible for ruining otherwise perfectly good rum. You can distinguish the coke-base drunk from your typical drunk by the rotten teeth that accompany his pickled liver in his golden years. The "Cuba Libre", (or Rum & Coke) as it's known in countries, such as Canada, where freedom of mobility rights extend to actually visiting there whenever you choose, is the world's most popular highball though the "Coke" part is usually abandoned for straight rum by the time the taste-buds war

90% Of Vitamin C And Most Vitamins A, B12 And E Are Made In China. Are They Safe?
    2008-05-27 11:28:00
I was surprised to learn that China is one of the largest exporters of many common drugs and vitamins. About 90% of all Vitamin C sold in the US is from China. China also produce 50% of the world's asprin and 35% of acetaminophen (Tylenol) as well as most Vitamins A, B12 and E.Since the United States does not require country-of-origin labels for any of our drugs, foods or supplements, there is no telling where that vitamin you are taking came from.Hot on the heels of the poisoned pet food scandal, and reported instances of toxic food and toothpaste, all eyes are now turning toward the Chinese vitamin market. How safe are they? The industry in China appears to be split between top-notch operations and bottom-of-the-barrel producers. China also suffers from the same conflict of interest that we are seeing here in the United States. The Seattle Times June 3, 2007How do you know if the vitamin you take is safe?Don't take synthetic vitamins, no matter where these are produced they have shown

Vitamin D may lower breast cancer riskFri May 16, 2008 2:25am BSTBy Maggie Fox, Health and Science EditorWASHINGTON (Reuters) - Breast cancer patients with lower levels of vitamin D were far more likely to die and far more likely to have their cancer spread than women with normal levels, Canadian researchers reported on Thursday.Women deficient in the "sunshine vitamin" when they were diagnosed with breast cancer were 94 percent more likely to have their cancer spread and were 73 percent more likely to die than women with adequate vitamin D levels, the researchers said.More than three-quarters of women with breast cancer had a vitamin D deficiency, the researchers reported to an upcoming meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology."The women with the lowest vitamin D levels had the highest risk of death from breast cancer," Dr. Richard Schilsky, of the University of Chicago and president-elect of ASCO, told Reuters in an interview."We are seeing an association. More Studies On Synthetic Vitamin Safety Are Needed
    2008-05-09 08:13:00
We all know we need to eat fruits and veggies, less processed foods and no junk -- most of our diets are lacking. So millions of people take a multivitamin to fill in the gaps but never feel any different or read reports like this one from March 17, 2008 Vitamins A, C and E are 'a waste of time and may even shorten your life'. It can make you dizzy with confusion. What are we supposed to do?Two things.1. Read and understand the ingredients in your multivitamin.2. Unless directed by a physician don't take isolated vitamins, like vitamin E alone.* Don't take mega doses, more is not better. Two things to know about these important studies.1.These studies are done using synthetic ingredients.2.The studies were also done using isolated synthetic vitamins. These isolated synthetic vitamins are not absorbed and utilized properly by the body. That's because - the 'main vitamin' ingredient, (e.g. A, E, C, etc.) which is extracted by synthetic vitamin makers, does not include the chemical cousins

Scratch And Sniff Your Vitamin. Do the smell test.
    2008-05-05 10:58:00
What if you opened your vitamin bottle and smelled food instead of medicine, would you be surprised? Would it be more pleasing to smell more spice than medicine?I've opened lots of bottles of vitamins since the multivitamins started coming in for the trade away program. Wow, every single vitamin bottle I opened smelled like medicine and vitamins. If you have always taken a synthetic multivitamin you might think, so that's what they are supposed to smell like because they are vitamins. You are right, vitamins (synthetic) are what they all smell like. When you take some whole food multis there will not be the "vitamin" smell since the ingredients are whole foods like fruits, veggies herbs and spice. With some whole food multis you can empty the contents in a smoothie and on food. This is how some parents use them for their kids or folks that can't swallow pills mix a whole food multi with food.Go ahead and smell your multivitamin. Taste them and see if you would just eat them.If you want

    Vitamin C Overdose
    2008-04-29 08:21:19
Using Vitamin C products beyond recommended the limits may cause stomachaches and diarrhea. Even though the body would only use as much as it needs of the vitamin, Vitamin C Overdose can hinder metabolic activities in the body. The recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for Vitamin C in nonsmoking adults is 75 mg per day for women and 90 mg per day for men. For smokers, the RDAs are 110 mg per day for women and 125 mg per day for men. A dose of 200 milligrams daily is almost enough to maximize plasma and lymphocyte levels.Higher levels of Vitamin C are needed when under environmental stress such as trauma, fever or infection. Full saturation is reached with daily intakes of 200-500 mg per day (in 2-3 divided doses). This is a water-soluble protein, and anything in excess is excreted by the body. Vitamin C Overdose can cause diarrhea, gas, or stomach upset. Other side effects could be stomach cramps, nausea, and diarrhea, and an increased risk of developing kidney stones. Large amounts of V

More Vitamin D in Childhood Cuts Later Diabetes Risk
    2008-04-15 09:42:15
(HealthDay News) -- Children who take vitamin D supplements may be less likely to develop type 1 diabetes later in life, according to researchers who analyzed the findings of five previously published studies. The researchers found that children who were given additional vitamin D were about 30 percent less likely to develop type 1 diabetes than children who didn't receive vitamin D supplements. The evidence also indicated that the higher and more regular the dose of vitamin D, the lower the risk of developing diabetes. The findings were published online in the journal Archives of Disease in Childhood.Type 1 diabetes, an autoimmune disorder, develops when insulin-producing cells in the pancreas are destroyed by the body's immune system, a process that begins in early infancy, according to background information in the review study. The incidence of type 1 diabetes is increasing by about 3 percent a year, and it's estimated that new cases of the disease will have increased 40 percent betwe

Liquid Vitamin Nutrition is Your Key to Good Health
    2008-04-10 22:08:00
High quality liquid vitamins and nutritional supplementation is essential to make up the deficit of nutrients in our food. The transition from pill form to liquid vitamins and minerals is taking place and the wave of the future for the health industry and nutritional supplements is liquid vitamins. These vitamins are digested as they pass through the intestinal tracts and the step of breaking down the pills is eliminated. Liquid Vitamins are much better absorbed than pill vitamins while pills are more taxing on your digestive system and much harder to swallow! They also help you achieve better health much faster than pill form. A recent study showed that while 98% of liquid vitamins are absorbed by your body, only 10-20% of pill vitamins are absorbed. Are you starting to see the importance of liquid vitamins and minerals? Maximum absorption is always key when it comes to liquid vitamins. Why should you use a liquid supplement? Pills will not always digest, but the liquid is absorbed th

Vitamin D May Prevent Breast Cancer

There are two new reports by cancer prevention specialists at Moores Cancer Center, Univsrsity of California, suggest that vitamin D in new prescriptions may prevent up to one half of all cases of breast cancer. The study is published online in the current issue of The Journal of Steroid Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. It pooled data from two earlier studies by the Harvard Nurses Health Study and the St. George’s Hospital Study that alleged that people with the highest levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D, 25(OH)D, had the lowest incidences of breast cancer. The research was based on 1,760 cases of individuals in the two studies and divided them into five equal groups, from the lowest 25(OH)D at less than 13 nanograms per milliliter, to the highest group with 52 nanograms per milliliter."The data were very clear, showing that individuals in the group with the lowest blood levels had the highest rates of breast cancer, and the breast cancer rates dropped as the blood levels of 25-hydroxyvi

    2008-03-26 01:45:00
Don't you know that Retinol a.k.a. vitamin A is not only good for eyesight? Well, it has also healing properties to SKIN PROBLEMS such as acne and sundamage. For more details and full information, read the article below.----RETINOL is a topical Vitamin A acid referred to as tretinoin or retinoic acid. Retinol is a stable, user friendly, over-the-counter preparation of topical Vitamin A. It has the advantage of causing less irritation and fewer side effects over prescription preparations such as Retin-A™ (Ortho Pharmaceuticals). With long-term use, the results are impressive. Most of the research on Retinol was done at the University of Michigan. Retinol’s effectiveness is due to the fact that skin has receptors for retinoic acid. These receptors are located on the outer membrane of cells and called retinoic acid receptors (RAR). Retinoic acid stimulates cellular replication and differentiation, assisting cells to be healthy and function as they should. Retinoic acid was initia

Benarkah Vitamin C Mencegah Flu ?
    2008-03-13 00:03:00

    Beer with Vitamin B

Beer with Vitamin B...anyone? This could be the start of something big...and healthy. A Filipino-made beer with Vitamin B took center stage during the gathering of members of the International Federation of Inventors' Association in Bangkok, Thailand, recently. Some of the inventions showcased by inventors from all over the world included chopsticks that double as a toothbrush and a hi-tech sandwich filling spreader. The crowd, however, made a bee-line to the beer concocted by Filipino inventor Billy Malang. Unlike ordinary beer, Malang's beer has Vitamin B. "All clear beers have no vitamins. It just contains alcohol, which is converted to sugar which gives you a big tummy, called the beer belly. So I brought back the Vitamin B to make beer a healthier habit," said Malang. Malang was among inventors from 27 countries who featured more than new 150 inventions in the gathering.source: http://www.abs-cbnnews.com

Jeruk Lebih Baik dari Tablet Vitamin C
    2008-01-14 21:08:00
Makin tua buah jeruk, biasanya makin berkurang kandungan vitamin C-nya, tetapi semakin manis rasanya.

The Importance And Benefits Of Vitamin K
    2007-08-29 07:38:36
One of the not no famous vitamins, but also vital for our healthy living is Vitamin K.Its most important role is in the blood coagulation. It heps us stop bleeding and getting healthy again after we get cut. Persons with deficiency in Vitamin K have the tendency to excessive bruising and/or nose bleeding. These can cause grave problems if are seriously hurt, as they bleed for a long time.Approximatively half of our daily dose of vitamin K, is taken from leafy, green vegetables as broccoli, asparagus, spinach, sweet potatoes, apricots. Also it is contained in vegetable oils like olive, canola and soybean oils.Other easy to find sources of K vitamin are yogurt and some cheese; a liquid form of this vitamin is found in green tea and - surprisingly- in coffee.I know we all are trying to avoid fats, but sometimes they are needed. Some nutrients are fat soluble -like vitamin K, A, D, E and F. With other words, for their absorption it is necessary to come into contact with some oils, fats. There are more K vitamins: K!and K2 are fat-soluble and can be found in natural sources; K3 is the synthetic version for t people who cannot consume vitamin K naturally because they lack bile, an enzyme necessary for fat-soluble vitamins absorption.Vitamin K has another important function: to improve the bone health and reduce risk of bone fractures, especially for post menopausal women, as they have the risk to get osteoporosis. The majority of us will never have to worry about our body's vitamin K intake, but it's always good to know.Although it is not so popular, Vitamin K has also been found to have cosmetic benefits.

Eye Supplements In Addition To Vitamin A
    2007-08-21 08:02:49
We all take our eyes and sight for granted, and that's ok cause we are born with them, but we only pay attention to them when some illness or trauma occurs. Sometimes it can be too late as our whole life is affected. There are many methods to take care of our vision, one of the prior importance is nutrition.Of course we cannot control all the factors that involves the eye's health, but there also are a lot of them that we can prevent. Natural vision problems are caused by age, smoking, sunlight, obesity as well as the intake of many medications. The age related worsening (the most popular) can be delayed by means of nutrition. It was proven that antioxidants from certain foods have an especially healthful effect on our eyes. Unfortunately far not everyone eats enough fresh produce - either because of the busy style of life, or just can't afford it.Nowadays its very easy to find all the vitamins and supplements on the market, among them the A, C and E vitamins (antioxidants) have an influence on the eye health.Vitamin A can be found in meals like eggs, liver, milk, carrot. It is involved in the formation and maintenance of healthy skin, hair and helps us to see in dim light, preventing night blindness for pregnant women. Our eyes deteriorate without adequate supplies of vitamin C. An indication of its importance is the fact that the concentration of vitamin C in the vitreous humor (the clear liqud in the eyeball) is about twenty-five times our serum level (the level in our blood), the retina 100 times. The antioxidant qualities of vitamin C help prevent crystallization and accumulation of foreign molecules that result in the blurred vision of cataracts.People with lower levels of vitamin E in their blood have a higher risk of cataracts and macular degeneration. Not less important for the vision are the beta carotene, selenium, cupric and zinc oxide, lutein. Smokers should take care to take enough luteine as it is important to the retina.Eye sight vitamins can be

Vitamin B and C for Anxiety
    2007-08-10 21:50:00
photo by sadalitA new commenter to the blog recently asked some questions on Vitamin B. I thought rather than have a novel reply I would do a post on it so everyone can benefit. I have to say I am not a doctor so please don’t sue me for anything that I say and you do and it doesn’t work ;) Ok so what I am going to tell you is all from the Anxiety and Phobia Workbook. I will paraphrase it but he says it much more elegantly: Vitamin B When your body is going through stress it depletes stores of B and C vitamins rapidly. The B vitamins are necessary to help maintain the proper functioning of the nervous system. Deficiencies in Vitamin B can lead to anxiety, irritability, restlessness, fatigue, etc. There is more than one kind of Vitamin B. (B2, B6, B5, B12, etc.) It is best to take all eleven of the B vitamins together in a B-complex supplement since they tend to work together synergistically. Vitamin C Vitamin C enhances the immune system and promotes health from infection

Benefits of Vitamin B5, Sources and Deficiency
    2007-07-30 08:53:53
Vitamin B5 is also known as pantothenic acid. Its name is derived from the Greek word pantos meaning "from everywhere," as small quantities of pantothenic acid are found in nearly every food.In its functional form, vitamin B5 gets combined with another small, sulfur-containing molecule to form coenzyme A (or CoA). This conversion allows vitamin B5 to participate in a wide variety of chemical and organic reactions. Coenzyme A is needed to carry out various metabolic functions, and for the generation of energy in the form of ATP from fats, carbohydrates and proteins.Roger J. Williams, the discoverer of pantothenic acid suggested that Vitamin B5 might be helpful in the management of certain medical disorders, such as rheumatoid arthritis.Functions of Vitamin B5 –* Vitamin B5 is also known as the anti-stress vitamin at times. It is one of the eight water soluble B complex vitamins.* Vitamin B5 helps production of the cellular antioxidant glutathione, and is therefore an essential vitamin for all life forms.* Helps in the break down carbohydrates, proteins and fats for energy - thus a stamina enhancer.* This vitamin plays an important role in production of adrenal hormones in the adrenal glands.* Vitamin B5 helps to produce neurotransmitters, cholesterol required for proper nerve and muscle performance.* It is also responsible for haemoglobin production and metabolism of toxins by the liver.* It plays an important role in cell division, DNA reproduction and RNA transcription.* It regulates the formation of stress hormones and hair pigmentation.Deficiency of Vitamin B5 –It is an unlikely that an adult will have a deficiency of vitamin B5 because of the availability of B5 in many foods, plus the fact that it is also produced by our intestinal bacteria. However, a deficiency of Vitamin B5 causes fatigue, muscle weakness, personality changes, psoriasis, and headache. Vitamin B5 is often used to treat the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, edema, swelling, pain, and stiffne

Role of vitamin B5 in treating acne
    2007-07-27 11:17:27
Vitamin B5 is also known as pantothenic acid. It belongs to the family of B vitamins, also called as B-complex. B vitamins are a family of vitamins that play an important role in promoting healthy nerves, skin, eyes, hair, liver, gastrointestinal tract, and brain workings. These B complex vitamins are very important for the body. They must be obtained through our diet or supplements. They convert food into energy, maintain a healthy immune system, balance various hormones in our body and carry out various tasks. These B vitamins work in synergy with each other. Each one is dependent on others in order to carry out their individual role in the body. Deficiency of any one of them can cause imbalance and deficiencies of others. As a result, our body’s ability to metabolize and digest them is heavily compromised. One of the B vitamins, whose deficiency causes acne, is vitamin B5. It is required by almost all cells of the body, including those of the brain. It is essential for synthesis

Vitamin E: A help for your acne
    2007-07-24 11:10:11
Vitamins are compounds that are required by our body for health and growth. One of the important vitamins is vitamin E. Our body requires it in small amount and can obtain it easily from our diet. It is present in nuts like almonds, walnuts and pistachios, as well as in vegetable oils like sunflower and olive oils. Vitamin E is a vitamin whose deficiency does not lead to any disease, but even a small quantity is highly beneficial for the immune system due to its powerful anti-oxidant properties that protect our body against oxidative damage. It protects cell membrane from damage. Vitamin E is important for a healthy glowing skin, as it eliminates harmful free radicals produced during cellular metabolism. This is due to its antioxidant properties. Research has indicated that vitamin E can help skin get over the acne scarring and lessen the visibility of acne scars. Besides, it administers the levels of retinol or vitamin A in humans. Retinol is important for healthy skin, mucous memb

Are You Depressed, Anxious, or Tired? You Might Be Deficient in Vitamin B6
    2007-07-16 14:15:01
B6 or Pyridoxine is a powerhouse of a vitamin! According to Dr. Ellis from Mount Pleasant, TX, who studied vitamin B6 for more than 30 years, "Vitamin B6 is as important to your body as oxygen and water." Like many other B complex vitamins, Pyridoxine is very important in fat, protein, carbohydrate and amino acid metabolism, and hence getting enough of it can help you to have enough energy. It also supports many aspects of nerve health, including nerve problems with those with epilepsy, carpal tunnel syndrome and psychiatric disorders.B6 is also a major factor in helping red blood cells to regenerate, and seems to be a primary immune system stimulating factor, which has been shown in particular to help defend the body against liver cancer.Vitamin B6 is vital in helping the body produce various neurotransmitters, and hence is important for memory. It also seems to help avoid or reduce glucose intolerance, which is when your blood sugar spikes abnormally high after eating. Dr. Ellis' research also shows that it may help reduce asthma attacks since it seems to lower the body' histamine levels. It also seems to help protect the body from artheriosclerosis because it reduces a chemical in the bloodstream that damages the walls of the arteries. It can also help promote healthy skin, reduce acne and morning sickness. B6 inhibits histamine production, and hence may help with allergies and asthma. In addition it seems to be helpful in cases of PMS, acting as a natural diuretic.Extra Vitamin B6 RequirementsB6 seems to be especially helpful for the elderly, and those with PMS, menopausal symptoms, and those with heart and blood sugar problems.* It also seems to be needed in higher amounts by smokers, those under a lot of stress, and those exposed to high levels of environmental chemicals (that would be most of us today!). This is one of those vitamins that we seem to need in higher levels in today's modern world, because of all the stress and pollution!* This statement has n

The Pill Vitamin Versus Liquid Vitamin
    2007-07-11 09:25:41
In recent years, a number of companies have introduced liquid vitamin supplements, some of them claiming that these products far outperform the traditional vitamin pill. While some companies took their claims too far (and were charged accordingly), the debate continues as to which type of vitamin is the most effective. The main advantage of a liquid supplement is the speed and ease of absorption by the body. Since there is no need to break down a solid, the vitamins are absorbed immediately. Liquid fans also claim that the absorption rate is much higher, making the supplements more effective. There are also those who hate swallowing big vitamin pills or simply can't swallow them due to a medical condition. For instance, people who have had gastric bypass surgery find it hard to keep a pill down. Throat surgery can also make swallowing solids painful. For people like this, liquid vitamins are the only viable option. But liquid supplements have their drawbacks. One of the main problems is that the vitamins and minerals do not keep their potency as well in liquid form. That means that the liquids have a shorter shelf life than pills. There are also enzymes contained in some vitamin tablets that aid in the absorption of the nutrients. These enzymes can't be included in liquid vitamins because they only last for a day or so in liquids. While with pills, the enzymes retain their effectiveness for the entire shelf life of the products. The claim of faster and more complete absorption of liquids is also challenged by some experts. While it's true that we digest liquids more quickly than solids, this does not necessarily lead to a more effective product. The most effective place for vitamin absorption is at the beginning of the small intestine. There are some claims that much of the contents of liquid vitamins is destroyed by stomach acids before it even gets this far. Pills, meanwhile, are coated to keep them from dissolving completely before they reach the small intestine.Whi

How To Know If You Need Vitamin Supplements
    2007-07-04 10:22:11
Taking vitamin and mineral supplements is perhaps one of the most controversial issues regarding healthy living. The lack of vitamins in your diet can be unhealthy, but too many vitamins can also put your health in danger. So, how do you know if taking vitamin and mineral supplements is necessary for you? Ask yourself the following questions in order to determine if you may need vitamin supplementation for a healthier lifestyle:Am I Stressed? If you are constantly stressed-out due to work, relationships, family or any other situation, your adrenal glands may be working overtime. This can potentially cause fatigue and headaches.Treatment: Vitamin B Complex, Vitamin E and Vitamin C supplements can help with this problem. Is My Immune System Up to Par? Do you constantly find yourself catching colds and the flu more frequently than others? You may need to boost your immune system with vitamins and minerals which provide the nutrients needed to fight these viruses.Treatment: Vitamin C supplement, Zinc and Manganese will do the trick.Do I smoke? I’m sure you’re aware that this habit is unhealthy but smoking uses up vitamin C and puts you at higher risk of osteoporosis.Treatment: Vitamin C supplements and calcium supplements will help reduce your chances of osteoporosis and provide you with the adequate amount of vitamin C.Am I Pregnant? Pregnant and hormonal women often lack in vitamin B-6. If you do not receive enough of this vitamin it can be harmful to you and your baby.Treatment: Take a vitamin B-6 supplement, but make sure not to take doses of more than 500mg per day without a Doctor’s recommendation.Am I on a Diet? If you are on a low-carb, low-fat or any form of diet you are probably not receiving the vitamins necessary for healthy living. Individuals on diets very rarely eat foods from all the major food groups and if they do, they usually do not eat the required amounts.Treatment: Depending on the type of diet and the foods you eat, you may require a multi-v

Vitamin E: Why There’s No Need To Fear Nature’s Great Protector
    2007-07-02 06:33:41
It would be a great pity if recent media scare stories highlighting the supposed risks of vitamin E supplementation prevented people, particularly the elderly, from ensuring that their diets include adequate supplies of this vital nutrient. These stories all centred on a single study, which was not new research but a meta-analysis of 19 previous reports focussed on subjects already identified as suffering from chronic diseases. The applicability of its findings to the usefulness or otherwise of vitamin E in helping to prevent disease and maintain optimum health in the well population must therefore be open to serious doubt. And this one study must also be considered alongside the many which have reported the different health benefits of vitamin E since its discovery in 1922.Numerous of these studies have demonstrated the benefits of vitamin E to cardiovascular health in terms of protecting against the onset of heart disease, in restricting the advance of the disease, and in reducing the risk of second and further heart attacks in those already affected. In common with other anti-oxidants, vitamin E also appears to protects against atherosclerosis, the hardening of the arteries which is the common precursor of serious heart problems. In fact vitamin E appears to have a general blood thinning and anti-coagulant effect similar to but much gentler and more natural than drugs such as warfarin. Vitamin E thereby helps to protect against highly dangerous clots forming in the arteries serving the brain and heart; clots which can lead to stroke – still one of the main causes of premature death and disability in the western world. But the benefits of vitamin E reach far beyond the heart and circulatory system. Being fat-soluble, vitamin E is also needed in large quantities by the brain, the trillions of cells of which are particularly rich in fat. Brain function is highly dependent on the efficient functioning of cell membranes, largely formed of fatty tissue, to allow transm

Vitamin C -- The Most Famous of Vitamins!
    2007-06-13 15:04:11
By David LeonhardtWe call Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, "the most famous of vitamins" because it really is the best known. It is the first one schoolchildren learn. It is the most cited cure for the common cold. Most people can rhyme off at least a few foods that contain vitamin C. And vitamin C is the single most searched nutrient on the Internet.HISTORY OF VITAMIN C: Nobel Prize winning biochemist Dr. Albert Szent-Gyorgyi first isolated vitamin C in 1928. (As someone of Hungarian descent, I find this a touch exciting.)Vitamin C first got its reputation for beating the common cold in 1970, when fellow Nobel Prize winner Linus Pauling published his bestselling book "Vitamin C and the Common Cold". In it, he suggested that taking vitamin C at levels well above the USA RDA (now 60 milligrams per day) could strengthen the immune system and help ward off the common cold.BENEFITS OF VITAMIN C: Vitamin C helps form collagen, a glue-like fibrous protein in bone, cartilage, tendons and other connective tissue. Vitamin C helps give structure and maintain such body parts as bones, cartilage, muscle, veins, capillaries and teeth. But recent studies have also linked "adequate dosages" of vitamin C to preventing a number of common cancers, of helping boost the nervous system, of prolonging life, of reducing the risk of heart disease, of softening the symptoms of respiratory diseases such as asthma and cystic fibrosis, and of keeping skin and glands healthy.SOURCES OF VITAMIN C: Most animals manufacture their own vitamin C. Primates, such as humans, gorillas, and monkeys, have somehow lost this ability.Which is why we need to get our vitamin C from our diets. It is well known that citrus fruits, such as oranges, lemons, grapefruits, tangerines, limes, mandarins and others contain vitamin C.In fact, vitamin C comes almost exclusively from fruits and vegetables.Other good sources are tomatoes, strawberries, raspberries, broccoli, asparagus, brussels sprouts, cauliflower, ca
