| Emergency Preparation Tips: Eruption of a Volcano | | 2008-07-18 12:28:00 | | Volcanoes are almost like beautiful mountains except for they become disastrous. Volcanoes are also mountains, but they are different in sense that the geothermal activities within them are active and are occasionally subject to destructive processes. Most volcanoes around the world are located at special zones that are strategically located around the Pacific Ocean. Thus, the areas around the Pacific are collectively known as the Pacific Ring of Fire. We have known two kinds of volcanoes. One is dormant and inactive. Such volcanoes are like Normal Mountain and do not erupt. The other type is the destructive of the active volcanoes, which occasionally erupt. The most destructive volcanoes are located in countries around the Pacific like Japan, Indonesia, the Philippines and New Zealand. Hawaii and other islands around the Pacific are also rich in volcanic supplies. Here are some emergency safeties guidelines that could help you prepare for a volcanic eruption. | | Kilauea Volcano Update | | 2007-06-23 06:14:58 | | A few days ago the area surrounding our volcano here on the Big Island, Kilauea, experienced a sudden and unusual flurry of small earthquakes. Yesterday our local newspaper, West Hawaii Today, reported on the front page that the lava had actually stopped flowing out of the Pu’u O’o vent. This is noteworthy because it has been erupting constantly since 1983; Kilauea is considered to be one of the most active volcanoes on earth. New fissures have appeared in the past day or two, and some rare plants and animals are in danger in some areas. However this startling change is good news for our leeward side of the island (except of course for some disappointed tourists): without the ensuing vog, our skies will be clearer and cleaner than they have been for 25 years, at least for a little while.
Several other volcanoes have been active the past week or so as well. In New Guinea, explosions from Rabaul rocked the surrounding areas as ash plumes rose 8900 feet. In Ecuador, both Tungu | | By: Surfing the Tao | | |

| | Huge mudflow inevitable from volcano lake | | 2007-01-30 02:49:00 | | A crater lake on a New Zealand volcano used as a backdrop in the ''Lord of the Rings'' films is on the verge of collapsing and could send a torrent of muddy water down the mountain in coming weeks, media reported today.Melting snow on Mount Ruapehu has filled the lake to within 1.5 metres of its lip, according to the New Zealand Herald newspaper. The 2,797-metre volcano is the highest mountain in the North Island and home to two commercial ski fields.Scientists say a lahar, or mudflow composed of volcanic material and water, is inevitable as warm summer weather causes the snow to melt and fill the lake.''It is still expected the earliest the dam might start collapsing to create a lahar down the Whangaehu River is February/March,'' the Herald quoted a Department of Conservation official as saying. On December 24, 1953, a lahar rushing down the Whangaehu River destroyed a railway bridge, causing a packed passenger train to plunge into the river, killing 151 people on board.Since then, a barrier of boulders and gravel has been built to divert any lahar flowing into the river. No major towns would be in its path.Mount Ruapehu, which last erupted in 1995 and 1996, creating the present crater dam, is in Tongariro National Park, where Peter Jackson filmed some scenes for his ''Lord of the Rings''. | | By: World News, News Updates, Current Events, News Art | | |
