Volvo may may link future product development with Ford of North America, a new report finds. Volvo currently shares several platforms with Ford of Europe, as well as Jaguar and Land Rover, but the weak dollar and pending sale of Jaguar and Land Rover has Volvo considering closer integration with Ford of North America. The new architecture sharing with Ford of North America would make it possible for Volvo to produce cars here without having to make a huge investment in a new production facility. "If we are sharing components and platforms, then we don't need a huge site of our own," Volvo CEO Fredrik Arp told Automotive News. "But if we have our own components and platforms or share with Ford of Europe, then we have to go it alone." Other European automakers — such as BMW and Mercedes-Benz — have opened production facilities in the U.S. due to the poor exchange rate. Volkswagen also recently announced that it would open a plant in the U.S. Volvo is more dependent on the North American market than any other European brand — selling 30 percent of its cars in NA — so the exchange rate has offset any of the brands improvements, including a 9.8% increase in gain in labor costs and a $50 million dollar reduction in global warranty costs. The exchange rate has ballooned from $.87 on the euro in 2002 to its current rate of $1.47. However, the shift to North American production assumes that Ford will not sell its Volvo brand. Since my earlier post on Bangalore Volvo City buses was extremely popular I thought I'll write a similar post on Chennai Volvo. So here we go. [Quick jump to Routes|time-table section ]It’s the same B7RLE variant of Volvo transit bus which is rocking Bangalore roads that has hit Chennai roads. If you ask me, the dashing red coloured Volvo in Bangalore, covered further with advertisements, looks a bit more attractive than the pale white colour Chennai Metropolitan has chosen. Nevertheless, it should be a good experience to Chennai commuters. (Even Singapore and several other countries use this same model...)MTC has purchased 10 Volvo B7RLEs as of now(Rs 78 lakh each, expensive than B7R inter city coaches). Only 5 are operational as of now-2 on 21G (Tambaram to Broadway), 2 on E-18 route (Broadway to Guduvancheri) and one on Route number 19 (Broadway to Kelambakkam). No official time table has been released. They keep plying on the designated routes. Ticket prices are at par with Bangalore (though diesel is cheaper in Chennai) starting Rs 10. (Makes more economical than unrully overpriced meterless autos in Chennai) APSRTC: Are you watching?Timetable: MTC Chennai has not issued any consolidated Time Table for Volvo Services, but I have learnt that they have placed some boards displaying departure timing of the Volvo buses at each bus terminal where a Volvo service originates/ends. One such board, found at Broadway station can be seen in the image below. But please note, these Volvo buses are under no obligation to honour these timings. When I took these photos at Broadway at 1120 hours I was thinking I have to wait for another 45 minutes for next bus. But surprisingly at 1130 a Volvo bus of route number 21G came in and it left the station at 1140. I’m not sure if the 1105 bus came in late or 1215 bus came in early, but verdict is that timetable is not reliable. Also I could see no mention of E-18 route time table (Broadway to Guduvancheri)Bangalore has a SMS based location identification service for Volvo city buses. Hope Chennaities can expect similar service (details here). Ticket Fare: From Broadway to Chamiers Road costed me Rs. 23 (Rs 5 in ordinary bus) While Bangalore BMTC Volvo conductors speak fluent English, Chennai MTC Volvo conductor with whom I spoke managed to utter few English words. The bus was running with less than 25% occupancy with which MTC might just be breaking even. As of now no advertising is to be found on these Volvos while BMTC is caching in on that front too.Other observations: Emergency Exit door is positioned at an unusual place-the ventilator on roof top. Not sure how practical it will be to use that door for emergency exit because if it is very inconvenient to exit through that tiny door. (It is more practical to break those gigantic windows and escape in case of emergency, assuming one manages to break them!)Cameras and Fire alarms have been provided. The central floor is extremely spacious to accomodate luggage, people with wheel chair or even a stretcher. Journey is smooth and comfortable. The driver steers the Volvo as if he's driving a car!! Almost everyone on the roadside-Other drivers, traffic police, general public, everyone turn their head and stare at Volve as it passes by. The culprit being a faulty battery switch, only the North American models are affected. The switch is prone to create short circuits if the jack handle comes in contact with it. Note that only the MY2005 models are affected.
No reports of the short circuits actually happening were brought in so far. The short circuiting was likely to happen by Volvo technicians themselves, as the instructions for the regular maintenance checks of the MY2005 XC90s affected involved the tampering of the faulty parts.
Volvo dealers will check the affected cars and implement a sticker on each car, instructing future service technicians on how to avoid the short circuits.

| | | IIHS tests convertibles, Saab 9-3 and Volvo C70 earn Top Safety Picks | | 2007-06-01 01:05:05 | | The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety made history today when they announced results of their first crah testings of convertibles. Out of the 10 new drop-tops they tested, the Saab 9-3 Convertible and the Volvo C70 received the Top Safety Pick. They scored “good” for all three criterias: frontal, side, and rear.
The rear impact tests proved to be the most difficult for these cars as fixed roofs can do a great deal in protecting the cabin and the car itself. The Pontiac G6 Convertible did not do so well in every criteria. Some other vehicles tested were the Chrysler Sebring Convertible, BMW 3-Series Convertible, Mitsubishi Eclipse Convertible, and the Audi A4 Cabriolet.
