    2008-03-17 20:27:00
Sudan's Darfur, worse than ever, is still amidst genocide and civil war that often than not don't make headlines in Western media. TIME published a heart-wrenching 23 photographs describing the worsening violence, pillaging, and chaos the area now faces with little to no help whatsoever. Not recognized by world organizations as the crisis it is there is no stability or hope to be found in the country. A corrupt government and oppressive regime led America into the Iraq war, but it is not enough to draw America to action in Sudan's Darfur. In recent months, western Sudan has witnessed a surge in violence not seen since the early days of the conflict in Darfur. The government and its surrogate, the Arab militias called janjaweed, have laid waste to areas where they claim rebels are in control. As before, the primary victims of the attacks are the defenseless civilians who inhabit the region. (TIME, see link below) When will someone powerful step in? Do the powerful countries of the worl...

Samara Wages Preemptive War on Dissenters
    2007-05-18 18:50:00
By Dmitri Minaev and Sean GuilloryThe biannual EU-Russia Summit is taking place today in the provincial town of Samara. European-Russian relations, the Middle East, Kosovo independence, and Iran will be some of the main topics of the talks. The Western media is reporting that Putin faces a tough go. Recent clashes with Estonia and trade standoffs with Lithuania and Poland, analysts suggest, have united the EU against Russia. Formerly, member powerhouses Germany and France negotiated deals individually with Russia ignoring the interests of East European member states. Now with new member states blocking EU trade accords with Russia, the rest of the Union seems to be standing firmly behind them. Some even suggest EU-Russia tensions threaten to unravel the Summit. As with this EU Summit, Russia’s hosting or attendance to international summits have been marred by controversy. Putin’s luster from Russia’s taking the G8 chairmanship in January 2006 was dulled by Western crit...

The Wages of Science - Part II
    2003-10-12 03:20:00
In the absence of efficient capital markets and adventuresome capitalists, some developing countries have taken this propensity to extremes. In the Philippines, close to 100 percent of all R&D is government-financed. The meltdown of foreign direct investment flows - they declined by nearly three fifths since 2000 - only rendered state involvement more indispensable. But this is not a universal ...

    2003-10-12 03:18:00
In the United States, Congress approved, last month, increases in the 2003 budgets of both the National Institutes of Health and National Science Foundation. America is not alone in - vainly - trying to compensate for imploding capital markets and risk-averse financiers. In 1999, chancellor Gordon Brown inaugurated a $1.6 billion program of "upgrading British science" and commercializing its ...
