    Wakefield Heading to the DL
    2008-08-10 11:16:00
Extra Bases Blog reports today that Tim Wakefield has been stratched from his scheduled start this Tuesday against Texas, as he has been having problems with the back of his right shoulder. It is the same injury that kept him off the roster in last year's World Series. The Red Sox have not decided on a replacement yet, and have until Tuesday to make a roster move in that regard.Kevin Youkilis was also scratched from Sunday's game, as he has soreness in his right shoulder. His injury is considered day-to-day.The Red Sox got a good performance out of Daisuke Matsuzaka on Saturday night, as he went eight innings and allowed just one earned run as he picked up his 13th win of the season. He was helped out by four double plays behind him, as the Red Sox won 6-2 over the White Sox.I went to the Brooklyn Cyclones game at KeySpan Park last night (a Cyclones 2-0 loss to the Batavia Muckdogs) and got back just in time to see the Sox score 4 runs in the seventh. It was capped off by a David Ortiz...

**FLASH** Tim Wakefield Gets Run Support!...Boston 8 KC 2
    2008-08-07 09:57:00
Hello on this very busy, at least for me, Thursday morning. I have to be brief...I only have two minutes to write this. For that, I'm sorry...a full post at the normal early morning time will be up here tomorrow. Tim Wakefield again had a strong start, going 6 innings and giving up only 2 runs, 1 of them earned. And his teammates picked him up by scoring 8 big runs. This was the first road series win in a long, long time for the world champions. Ok, it's a minor accomplishment, but every game is important at this time of the season and the Sox only have a two game lead (in the lost column) over the Minnesota Twinkies in the Wild Card race.Click on the title for more on last night's Sox victory over the not so royal Royals, and I'll see you soon. Gotta zoom....

Wakefield Is On A Roll...Big Papi Is Tentatively Scheduled To Return On July 25...Boston 12 Baltimore 1
    2008-07-13 04:00:00
Tim Wakefield of the Boston Red Sox is on a roll...there's no denying it. Saturday afternoon at Fenway Park, he was nearly unhittable for seven innings, only giving up a third inning solo home run while allowing just two hits and one earned run. He walked one. It was vintage Wakefield at his baffling and beautiful best. Boston won the game easily by a score of 12-1. Here's what his manager had to say, as well as the man himself and ex-teammate Kevin Millar...“I think that’s actually the best I’ve seen him pitch,” said Francona, who had to leave Wakefield off the World Series roster last fall because of lingering back and shoulder problems. “He worked hard to stay where he is. When last year ended, and he wasn’t able to pitch, it was very important to him to come back and take the ball when it’s his turn.”“I was the beneficiary of a lot of runs scored tonight,” Wakefield said. “So that made my job a lot easier after the third inning.""He’s the most underrated pit...

Seattle Knuckles Under To Wakefield and Boston...Red Sox 11 Mariners 3
    2008-06-08 04:59:00
Knuckleballer Tim Wakefield led his Boston Red Sox team to a resounding 11-3 stomping of the Seattle Mariners, and he was flat out brilliant. At one point he retired 12 Mariners in a row. He allowed five hits, but only three of them were longer than 25 feet. Wakes said he was staying back longer during his delivery, and that helps his control as his knuckleballs dart and zoom and dance THROUGH the strike zone. One of his strikeouts victims was Kenji Johjima, and the pitch was eerily reminicent of the famous "eephus" pitch, a pitch thrown so slowly it almost looks like a slo-mo instant reply. The pitch was beautifully slow and the whiff was real. Wakes went seven innings, and the bullpen polished off the west coasters. Craig Hansen continued to show a biting slider and a good fastball and breezed through the eighth. Jonathon Papelbon, summoned to pitch the ninth just to give him some work, allowed one run during a 23 pitch ninth. And then, suddenly, it was over and almost time to watch ...

Bedard Bests Wakefield, Red Sox...Seattle 1 Boston 0...RED SOX DVD SET DETAILS
    2008-05-29 04:37:00
The Boston Red Sox hitting woes continued Wednesday night at Safeco Field in Seattle as the Erik Bedard fueled Seattle Mariners defeated the hitless wonders, that baseball team from Boston, by a score of 1-0. The Sox collected two hits, if you want me to be precise, but two hits were clearly not enough. And all this came on a night when the "old man," knuckleballer Tim Wakefield, spun an 8 inning beauty, allowing only five base hits and one run while walking none. His only mistake was a home run ball to Yuniesky Betancourt in the third inning. Wakes had this to say after the stinging road defeat...“I made some adjustments from my last start and they paid off, but unfortunately, I came out on the short end of the stick,” Wakefield said."Manny Ramirez, looking for career home run #500, went 1-3 with a single, which was one of the two Red Sox hits in the game. Clearly the Red Sox hitting has taken a turn southward, WAY southward (at this rate, they'll end up in Cuba!), but after four ...

    Oakland Jumps Wakefield's Bones...A's 8 Red Sox 3
    2008-05-24 04:48:00
For the second time in his last three starts, Tim Wakefield allowed seven runs in a game, and the Red Sox seven game winning streak is now merely a part of history. Oakland defeated Boston 8-3 and handed Timmy his third loss of the year. His record is even at 3-3, but he has only had one standout start, an eight inning beauty. It didn't take long for the A's to take command, scoring three runs in the first and four runs in the third. And with Rich Harden on the hill for the home team, there was no way to come back from such a deficit. Terry Francona had this to say..."His stuff is as good as anybody in the league," Sox manager Terry Francona said of Harden, who is 3-0. "He gets into some fastball counts and he doesn't give you a fastball. We've seen him too much. We don't need to face him every other game. I hope he's not going to come back and pitch Sunday."Peter here, and yes, Harden is THAT good, at least when he pitches against us, and NO, he will not be pitching on Sunday. His rec...

    Wakefield's Knuckies Sting Rays
    2007-08-14 12:11:00
Six no-hit innings, eight shutout innings....quite a job by Tim Wakefield as he led his Boston Red Sox to a 3-0 whitewashing of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. From the time he started his warmups, something special was in the air, as the ball was moving and dancing. Said his manager Terry Francona........."[Wakefield] has been a blessing," Francona said. "I think it goes under the radar sometimes, because of the way he pitches. I hope it doesn't. He's been phenomenal ... and he's not done."Peter here, and he wasn't under the radar last night, that's for sure! His line reads like this-eight innings pitched, no runs, two (!!) hits and 6 strikeouts. Carl Crawford's ground ball single starting off the 7th inning was the first hit that Wakes gave up, and the crowd rose and showed him their appreciation. Paps came on to record his 28th save with a 20 pitch ninth. And with Kazmir going against Lester today, it was a must win. But right now they ALL seem like must wins, what with the Yankees ...

A Birthday Win For Tim Wakefield And The Red Sox
    2007-08-03 12:15:00
41 years old? Could've fooled me. Tim Wakefield went seven strong innings Thursday afternoon at Fenway Park, and his team put up a nice crooked number in the bottom of the seventh inning to sculpt a 7-4 Sox win. With the score tied at 3, Doug Mirabelli attoned for his sixth inning baserunning gaffe with a single, scoring Coco Crisp with the go ahead run. Alex Cora followed 'Belli with a run scoring single and Peds finished off the Birds with a two run double. At that point it was 7-3 and the game was over. But after Okajima threw a 6 pitch (!!) 8th inning, the stage was set for the Red Sox debut of their newest pitcher, Eric Gagne. The crowd stood as soon as the bullpen door opened and kept standing until he reached the mound. Gags (this nic will NOT work!) struck out the first two batters, then allowed a meaningless run in a non-save situation before ending it and sending the crowd home happy. And why shouldn't they be? The Red Sox are now 66-42, 24 games over .500. Their starting ...

This Day in Tim Wakefield History
    2007-08-02 18:28:00
A happy 41st birthday today to one of baseball's best citizens, one Timothy Stephen Wakefield. My buddy Adam in Maine sent me a great email today about the esteemed Mr. Wakefield, and other events in history on this date, and like many of Adam's emails, always gives me a good laugh.I thought I would share it with all of you.1776Members of the Continental Congress begin attaching their signatures to the Declaration of Independence.1907Hall of Famer Walter Johnson makes his major league debut with the Washington Senators.1945President Harry S. Truman, Soviet leader Josef Stalin and British Prime Minister Clement Attlee conclude the Potsdam conference.1966Guided by the Southern Cross, retired Boston Red Sox slugger Ted Williams and two other men journey to Melbourne, Fla., to attend the birth of Timothy Stephen Wakefield, who is given Williams' initials.1979New York Yankees catcher Thurman Munson, who couldn't catch the knuckleball, dies in a crash of his private plane in Canton, Ohi...

    2007-06-14 04:26:00
It seems strange that Tim Wakefield, who has had ever so much trouble against every opponent he's faced to this point, should go eight depressingly strong innings against the Colorado Rockies but Curt Schilling could barely make it through five against essentially the same lineup. Did the Rockies not get the memo that these things simply do not happen in Fenway? Did they not read the million and one blog posts glorifying the near-no-hitter in Oakland last Thursday? Do they not consult 38Pitches? Inquiring minds need to know the answers to these questions.Even better, while all the king's horses and all the king's men could not put Humpty Dumpty back together again in Fenway, the New York Yankees were otherwise occupied defeating the Arizona Diamondbacks. The lead is now down to 8 and 1/2 games with just under 100 to play. I haven't heard any snappy banter about what the Sox magic number looks like now. It's funny how the near sweep at the hands of the Athletics took a little of th...

    Wakefield Gets Back On Track
    2007-06-13 17:49:00
Tim Wakefield pitched eight spectacular innings last night at Fenway, allowing just four hits and one walk, and the Red Sox gave him just enough offense as they beat the Colorado Rockies, 2-1.Last night's Wakefield win also proved just what a horse's ass Wallace Matthews is.You may remember back in May this "writer" for Newsday did an incredible hatchet job in his newspaper on Wake, and basically compared him to baseball's on going steroid scandal in a rambling, incoherent and total mess of a column. For those of you who didn't read it, here is my column about it:http://quinnmedia.blogspot.com/2007/05/wallace-matthews-gutless-coward.htmlI called him out as a gutless coward, and I believe I was proven correct. In that column, he gets so many facts wrong, and the column would have been funny if it wasn't such a slander against one of baseball's classiest and best citizens. (For example, he talks about the length of Wake's games. Did anyone else notice the speed of last night's gam...

Wakefield Woefully Wild As Yanks Beat Sox
    2007-06-02 12:30:00
Friday night Red -Sox style was over after 4 innings as the Yankees took advantage of Tim Wakefield's wildness and scored 6 times after Boston had come back to knot the score at 3. This was one of those games that the phrase "turn the page" was invented for. The lone bright spot was a Kevin Youkilis single that extended his hitting streak to 23 games. For Kevin, the beat goes on. For Wakefield, well, he would have been better off hiding his head in the sand, or the infield dirt, or ANYWHERE but the Fenway Park mound. He had nothing, nada, zip, zero. And the New York club took advantage. Bigtime. The less said about this one, the better! Today it's Mussina going up against Schilling in a game that has victory written all over it. I think. When these two teams play, anything can happen. I'll point right to the beanball war that took place during the game last night. And hot tempers, unfortunately, will be showcased this afternoon. May no one, either a Yankee OR a Red Sox player, be hu...

    Wakefield Was Woeful, Wang Wonderful
    2007-05-22 12:21:00
From the beginning, I could tell from Tim Wakefield's facial expression that his knuckler didn't "have it." And I was right. And his recent record against the New York Yankees grew even more lodsidedly bad. He's 1-7 in his last nine starts against them, with an ERA of an even 6.00 The Yankees won game one of this series 6-2. All the Red Sox have to do is avoid a sweep, and they have two more chances to do just that, starting tonight at 7pm.The Yankees came out of the gate fast even though the Sox left 5 stranded runners in the first two innings. It was 4-0 after two on the strength of home runs from AROD and Giambi. The game was effectively over then, but the Red Sox had their chances. And squandered most of them. Papi drove in both Sox runs. Boston forced Wang to throw a lot of pitches, but he was up to the challenge. And their bullpen was just good enough. From the Globe......"Imagine: a quality start for the Yankees. Very rare. In the spring of '07, there've been more Boston Po...

Wakefield And His Knuckler Help To Sweep The Jays Out Of Contention
    2007-05-11 12:23:00
8-0. Another impressive win for the Boston Red Sox, who are white hot. They're getting great pitching and hitting and very good defense. And yesterday, after a shaky first for Wakefield was ended by a strike 'em out throw 'em out double play executed by Mirabelli and Youklis, it was ALL Wakefield through the 7th inning. His ERA stands at a league best 1.79. The Darkman, Hideki Okajima (see the last paragraph for more on the Darkman), threw a clean and quick 8th, and Romero followed that with a one hit ninth. Poof, game over, we're outta town and going home with a sweep. The trip back to Boston must have been sweet indeed. So the Red Sox have won 16 of their last 21 games. They stand up high with a record of 23-10. The 23-10 start matches the third best in franchise history at this point of the season, trailing only the 1946 (26-7) and 2002 (24-9) teams. Mike Lowell continued his torrid hitting with another home run, this one a three run shot. Youk had 3 hits and he has also been cl...
