| | Best Practices For Webmasters | | 2008-01-23 03:18:05 | | Best practices for many webmaster issues.Site Verification Files and Meta TagsYes, you should keep your verification file or meta tag live to maintain your status as a verified owner.Site Verification Best PracticesIf you have multiple people working on your site with Webmaster Tools, it's a good idea to have each person verify the site with his or her own account, rather than using a shared login. That way, as people come and go, you can control the access appropriately by adding or removing verification files or meta tags for each account. You may want to keep a list of these verification codes and which owner they are connected to, so you can easily control access later. If you lose track, you can always use the "Manage site verification" option in Webmaster Tools, which allows you to force all site owners to reverify their accounts. What's the difference between using subdomains and subdirectories? When it comes to Google, there aren't major differences between the two, so when you're making that decision, do what works for you and your visitors.Underscores vs. DashesIn general, we break words on punctuation, so if you use punctuation as separators, you're providing Google a useful signal for parsing your URLs. Currently, dashes in URLs are consistently treated as separators while underscores are not. Keywords in URLsIt's always a good idea to be descriptive across your site, with titles, ALT attributes, and yes, even URLs, as they can be useful signals for users and search engines.Moving to a new IP addressWe got a question about changing a site's IP address, and provided a few steps you can take as a webmaster to make sure things go smoothly. Here's what you can do:Change the TTL (Time To Live) value of your DNS configuration to something short, like five minutes (300 seconds). This will tell web browsers to re-check the IP address for your site every five minutes.Copy your content to the new hosting environment, and make sure it is live on the new IP addr | | By: Tushar Agarwal Software Development SEO | | |

| | Screwed Up: Google OR The Webmasters?!? | | 2008-01-12 12:25:00 | | The highly controversial Google Pagerank is "talk of the town" again! If you have a little bit of a background about Google Pagerank then you should know webmasters on this planet have gone ga-ga over this piece of green bar on their browsers. Some say it is important while most say they'd rather eat shit. After the initial salvo of Pagerank reshuffling last October 25 and the few weeks following that date, the issue seemingly died down and nobody was talking about it. People bitched about Google algorithms and policies about Pagerank but nevertheless shelved the talk about it because there wasn't anything to do about it.In the past few days, it looks like Google has been working on another PR update and webmasters forums are all abuzz of this Pagerank talk! Well, I thought it wasn't important anymore? I went through a couple of these forums to read what all the fuss was about and I couldn't help but laugh about one forum post made a thread starter where he says "...Not that PR matters anymore BUT...." Yeah right... the great old BUT!Fact is, a lot of webmasters still have a hangover for Google PR. Like I said before, as long as you got that little green bar on top of your browser you still care about Pagerank. Watching any developments for Pagerank clearly states your hypocrisy. As for me, this blog and my Olympics blog lost Pagerank 3 days ago. I couldn't say I could care less because like other more seasoned bloggers who taught me I still feel Google Pagerank has a bearing. I would be nice to see that little green bar again but if not I wouldn't go rant about it here or anywhere else.Going back to the title of this post, who is screwed up? Google or the webmasters talking about Google Pagerank? My answer seems obvious.

| | Nofollow Can Upset Webmasters! | | 2007-12-12 20:25:27 | | I received lots of e-mails from potential advertisers and they asked if the text ads that I sell have the nofollow tag or not. I told them that I put nofollow on all text ads because I believe that those links are placed here for advertisement purposes, not for SEO and PageRank *cough* purposes.

| | Webmasters Adsense Cash Secret Revealed! | | 2007-11-04 21:02:00 | | Most webmasters know that Adsense generates a sizeable source of additional advertising income. That is why most of them use it to go after high paying keywords. They have with them the lists that tells what the keywords are and have already used various methods of identifying them. | | IconFinder - A Webmasters Dream | | 2007-05-03 15:06:35 | | You’ll see icons on almost every web page you visit, that’s because graphics often add a whole new dynamic to a webpage that really keeps people coming back as your site appears more friendly and up to date with the times. More often than not when I’m designing a page I know exactly what type of icon I want to use to represent a specific option or product, but I can never find exactly what I want.
Well now IconFinder is making the search easier then ever with it’s Icon Search Engine. The webpage itself has a simple design with only a search box and a contact link, but once you enter something to search that’s when the real magic happens. Currently the search has 21711 objects indexed, so that leaves plenty of icons to the imagination.
One thing I would like to see is categories on the main page in which I can browse through instead of me already having to know what to look for, browsing through the icons would give me ideas on how I could use specific i | | By: Super Justin | | |
| | For Webmasters: Why Discount Web Hosting Can Be a Nightmare | | 2007-04-17 13:28:25 | | Web hosting companies are the backbone of the web. Without them, there would be no web sites. Sorry to state the obvious, but I want to make the point that there are tens of thousands of web hosting companies in America and one common problem. Most hosting companies offer what you could call "bulk hosting" service. The idea behind bulk hosting is to sell discount hosting service with a large amount of features to profit from hosting a large bulk of accounts. This can be good for the consumer's wallet, but be warned, discount web hosting can give webmasters headaches. Discount web hosting businesses face two major complications. The first is having to handle the demand of customer service needs to a wide customer base. The second problem is that in order to profit from selling the service at such a low cost, they have to place a large number of accounts on each server. This can cause stress on the server which in turn causes low performance or even downtime if it becomes overloaded. Unless you are specifically looking for cheep service, the first thing to do when searching for web hosting is to avoid discount web hosts. This is especially true if you run a business, or your web sites provide most of your income. Do yourself a favor and make sure you call or email prospective hosts before making a purchase. Find out the maximum number of customers they place on one server. One of the most important questions to ask them is how long it takes them to reply to tech support requests when you e-mail them or submit a support ticket. Most companies should not take longer than 24 hours. Some will even reply within just a few hours. Another question to ask ahead of time is how much monthly tansfer they offer for your account and what their pricing is if you go over the limit. This is good to know ahead of time for high traffic sites. This discussion covers why to avoid discount web hosting and what questions to ask any host before you sign up, reg | | By: Windows XP Security Tips | | |
| | Google Sharpens Malware Alerts for Webmasters | | 2007-03-01 03:12:00 | | Google Inc. has enhanced the way it notifies webmasters that their sites contain malware, improving on a service the Mountain View, California, company launched in November of last year in a partnership with The Stop Badware Coalition.Google has begun providing more detailed alerts and to send these notifications via e-mail to webmasters, according to a posting Monday on an official Google blog.Previously, Google only informed webmasters that their sites had been identified as having malware and made generic suggestions for fixing the problem. Now, the company also points webmasters to specific offending pages from their sites that Google has determined contain malicious components."This can be helpful when the malicious content is hard to find," the posting reads. "By providing example URLs, webmasters are one step closer to diagnosing the problem and ultimately re-securing their sites."Before, Google notified webmasters by placing a note in the site's summary page in Google's Webmaster Tools site, but now it is sending the alert via e-mail as well.Google flags Web sites according to guidelines set by The Stop Badware Coalition. Webmasters who feel their sites have been incorrectly flagged as having malware need to contact the coalition and request a review. In August, and also in conjunction with The Stop Badware Coalition, Google started displaying malware alerts for users of its search engine. When users attempt to click over to a Web site considered to be potentially dangerous, Google shows an alert page that informs them of the possible risk and gives them the option to click back to the results page or continue on to the questionable Web site. However, these alerts sometimes anger webmasters who are convinced their sites don't contain malware. The Stop Badware Coalition is a nonprofit organization led by Harvard University and the University of Oxford and backed by Google, Lenovo Group Ltd. and Sun Microsystems Inc.A study published in May of last year by sec | | By: Google Vs Yahoo | | |
