Lamentations of an Educated Voter: On Whiners, Pragmatism, and Reality
    2008-07-14 18:58:00
Barack Obama and John McCain are experiencing great difficulty keeping their surrogates in check and on message. Last week, civil rights activist Jesse Jackson got in trouble by making a vulgar remark in regards to his frustration with Obama. The media had a field day with this, as they couldn't stop talking about Jackson's diminished stature or possible fissures on Obama's left. The McCain camp, however, would not be outdone. Shortly after Jackson's mouth got him in trouble, chief economic advisor and former Texas Senator Phil Gramm created even more controversy by claiming the United States was in a "mental recession" and accusing us of being "a nation of whiners." (You can access the video clip here.) Obviously, voters don't like to be called names, but on top of that, in an election in which economic anxiety is weighing heavily on voters' minds, these remarks could not have come at a worse time.Of course, this brouhaha was catnip for pundits and journalists. Gramm tried to bac

    2008-07-11 10:26:08
WASHINGTON — Republican John McCain rebuked his friend and adviser Phil Gramm on Thursday for saying the U.S. has become a “nation of whiners” about the economy and that the nation is in a “mental recession.” “Phil Gramm does not speak for me,” the presumptive GOP presidential nominee said. “I speak for me.” Gramm, a former Texas [...]

Will The Global Whiners Please Get Their Act Together
    2008-01-23 14:34:00
This is just fantastic. Apparently global warming is now dependant on a Monday morning quarter backing of the past seasons whether analysis. We've been pummeled for ages it seems by the Goracle and his mentally unstable entourage about how terrible the effects of global warming would be. We heard about how monstrously gigantic super-storms, bringing wave after wave of mega hurricanes, would batter the coastal regions of America and the world. But where did they go?In actuality, depending on which reference you use, 2007 was the weakest hurricane season the U.S. (and the world) has seen in anywhere between five and twenty years. Like I said, depending on which reference you go by.But "let us not alloweth that to standeth in our way," sayeth the prophets of Earthly warmth. "We shall overcometh. We shall now reverseth our words, confuseth and confoundeth thy terms, and thereby claimeth righteousness and victory in the coming age."In other words, they got their butt's whooped by, as was ex

    Are the Padres becoming whiners?
    2007-07-09 17:41:00
David Wells approached the home plate umpire Saturday after giving up a home run.The Padres pitcher argued balls and strikes, was told to return to the mound, then got ejected for coming back to argue more. Finally, he ended his day with the childish behavior of throwing the ball against the netting behind home plate.Greg Maddux spent Sunday arguing balls and strikes with the plate umpire. It’s obvious they’re not calling pitches off the plate strikes for him any more. When Marcus Giles struck out to end Sunday’s 5-4 loss to Atlanta on a called strike off the plate, ESPN announcer Jon Miller said, “Those were the pitches Maddux wanted all night to be strikes.”The unfortunate question now is: Are the Padres becoming whiners?Perhaps that should be deferred to other teams. The Florida Marlins certainly tired of watching Padres leadoff batter Brian Giles draw walks against them. Arguably, a lot of the pitches called balls were the same ones Wells and Maddux were begging for to be st

Are French workers really a bunch of whiners?
    2007-05-15 12:53:59
Thanks to Panthère rose for bringing a report highlighting the French as a bunch of whiners this morning. Why is that though? Well, simply put: because it’s an industrial relations tactic that always works in France. There are untold numbers of examples of the government caving in to demands that one law or another should be dropped because it just didn’t suit some aspect of the population to have it implemented. Two particular sections of the population really stand out in this regard though: students and farmers. Last year we had riots going on for months because the student population didn’t want a law passed that would, at a stroke, make it both easier to hire and to fire them. It would have led to a drastic reduction in youth unemployment because, at the moment, once you employ someone, that’s it, it’s pretty much permanent. Net effect of the current situation is that companies employ less people than they actually need which, of course, reduces the
