It's game three of round two....it's the Cubs versus the Sox, it's the North Side versus the South Side....it's the final game of the 2008 Crosstown Classic. The Cubs will try to avoid a sweep at the hands of the White Sox, as well as try to keep from losing their fourth game in a row for the first time this season. The Cubs' Interleague schedule concludes tonight on the last Sunday in June and Lou Piniella's crew is in need of a win.
The Cubs have struggled on the road, even within the Chicago city limits, and are not playing with the same confidence away from the Friendly Confines. In recent history, the Cubs have played better on the road than at home and while the play at Wrigley is the sole reason the Cubs are still in | | By: Chicago Cubs Online | | |

Updated - 12:36pm C.T. - According to a report from Bruce Levine on ESPN 1000, the Cubs are expected to place Scott Eyre on the DL before today's game and will recall Jose Ascanio from Triple-A Iowa to take his place on the active roster.
It's game two of round two....it's the Cubs versus the Sox, it's the North Side versus the South Side....it's the Crosstown Classic. Today marks the halfway point of the 2008 season, game 81 of 162, and the Cubs are in need of a win. Not because it is the White Sox but because they are banged up and are not playing good ball right now. Lou Piniella's crew has lost 3 out of 4 and 4 straight on the road and a win today would help them avoid their second 3-game losing streak of the year.

The giant Cubs-colored head of Barack Obama has just one question for all of us.
Yes We Can! Because Barack Obama is a White Sox fan, I think I speak for all of us when I say he is not my first choice for President. That honor has to go to the Constitutionally-ineligible-but-nevertheless-undaunted Ryan Scott Dempster
If elected, Ryan Dempster will be our first Canadian President, ending the years of oppression Canadians have suffered under American-American rule.
When he's not executing child rapists single-handed, Dempster is pitching pretty well for the Cubs. In his last start, he went 8 innings and only let up one run.
Ryan is a Taurus, and his horoscope is:

It's game one of round two....it's the Cubs versus the Sox, it's the North Side versus the South Side....it's the Crosstown Classic. The White Sox will be looking to prove a point after getting swept at Wrigley last weekend and with Jim Thome back in the lineup, Ozzie Guillen will have all of his offensive weapons at the Cell....where the Sox are 24-11 compared to 19-24 on the road.
The Cubs open their longest road series of the season with the first of three against the Sox. The next time Lou Piniella's crew will see the ivy on the bricks at Wrigley is not until July 8th against the Reds and they need to find a way to improve on their 16-20 road record over the next 10 games.

It's game three of round one....it's the Cubs versus the Sox, it's the North Side versus the South Side....it's the Crosstown Classic. While many in attendance tonight will be carrying brooms with them to the old ballpark, Lou Piniella's crew will certainly receive the best the White Sox have to offer. Neither team wants to get swept in these series and the Sox have a lot to prove....especially with the way the Chicago media has reacted after the first two games.

It's game two of round one....the Cubs versus the White Sox, North Side versus South Side....The Crosstown Classic. After the walk off win on Friday afternoon, Lou Piniella's crew will try to keep it going today against Jose Contreras behind Jason Marquis. For the first time in a week, the Cubs' offense will face a pitcher they have a history against but at the same time it will not be an easy task plating runs against the veteran right-hander. The Cubs must score early and often today and not rely on trying to beat a very good Sox bullpen for the second day in a row.

(Hailie: 7, United States: nothing.)
You see? It can be done! Let's beat those Sox! But enough with the cultural bon mots and fancy-pants allusions. Ted Lilly takes the mound for our Baby Bears. Ted is really starting to pitch well of late- he has 6 wins in his last 9 starts, and has lowered his ERA from 6.46 at the end of April to its present 4.76. Ted Lilly also leads the Cubs in strikeouts, with 83. (Ryan Dempster has 81.)

It's the Crosstown Classic, the Cubs versus the White Sox and the North Side versus the South Side....Round One. Both the Cubs and White Sox are dealing with injuries and both teams have climbed to the top of their division in different ways. The Cubs with offense and good pitching and the White Sox with outstanding pitching....so something's gonna give this weekend. Lou Piniella's crew will be without the services of Alfonso Soriano and could be without both Jim Edmonds and Reed Johnson while the Sox will not have Paul Konerko for the weekend.

Rich Hill (0-1, 7.04) vs. Nick Masset (0-1, 3.00)
The Crosstown Classic from the Desert.... The Cubs and White Sox face-off for the first time today in 2008, Spring Training or not, it is the Cubs vs. the Sox. Lou Piniella's crew will be without Aramis Ramirez and Derrek Lee and likely Kosuke Fukudome if he sticks to his play two, take one of schedule. Ramirez and Lee are expected to get extra at bats in minor league camp today. The Cubs play the Angels again on Sunday at HoHoKam, weather permitting (forecast is calling for rain and 58 degrees), before their only day off in the desert on Monday.

Don't you love the way AJ's jowels flap in the breeze?
For my money, the saddest part about out sending Nutty Buddy away is that we really don't have a good candidate to open up a can of whupass on A.J. anymore.
Sure, I suppose it's possible that Soto might get mad enough. At least the eyebrows give me some hope. Maybe Pie will step up and show us something. Maybe it will turn out that Fukudome is a closet ninja. But there's just no guarantee anymore that, once the game starts, suspensions will ensue. Which is going to make Cubs/Sox games a lot less interesting this season. Today Rich Hill leads the scrubs to wherever it is that the White Sox play. Speaking of Rich Hill, Lou has a bone to pick:
That's another thing," Piniella said as he ticked off his areas of concern. "He hasn't really had a good spring. He's not throwing the ball nearly as well in spring training now as he did last year at this time. So it's time for Hill kind of step it up a little bit, also."

During Friday's win, we saw the resurged Carlos Zambrano, now playing like the ace he said he would, thanks to solving the arm slot problems that plagued him in the first two months. With that problem out of the way, Rich Hill could use a little help with his. King Richard's aren't about arm slot--the youngster was rumored to have been tipping his pitches in the last outing, which resulted in an early shower after he gave up five runs (three HR) in just three innings.

W - Massett (2-1), Joe West’s ego, infield drying compound stock-owners.
L - Zambrano (4-4), Joe West, Soriano’s legs, brooms.
Things to take from this game
1. Just a couple of bad innings
It’s not much consolation, but Z actually looked good for most of the game. He totally lost it in the seventh, we didn’t get him out of the game soon enough, and Cotts couldn’t pitch out of the jam. (That AJ guy brought in four runs with one swing of the bat.) But other than thatinning and the third, Z actually looked sharp to me.
2. 2 out RISP
Barrett had a couple missed opportunities to knock in some 2-out runs. In the grand scheme of things, it wound up being the least of our problems, but at the time it seemed consequential. Sox had far, far more LOB, by the end of things.

Things to take from today’s game
1. Blowing in the wind
The fifth inning saw a series of home runs, including a particularly wind-aided one from Barrett, and another from Marquis.
2. Derrek Lee nearly killed Santo
Lee hit a pinch-hit grand slam, his first at bat in a week, in the bottom of the 8th, breaking the game open 11-6. The Cubs had already come back to take the lead in the inning, on a triple by Theriot, single by Soriano, and triple by Ramirez.
3. Rockin’ Wrigley
Limited to the audio feed, it was impressive to hear the chorus of boos that preceded each A.J. at bat, the chants of “Let’s Go Cubbies,” and especially, the sing-along at the end of the game. It sounded as if 40,000 were joining in on “Go Cubs, Go.”

Things to take from this game
1. The other Chicago team can play ugly ball, too.
Four errors, passed balls and wild pitches. The Cubs capitalized on a very sloppy game by the Sox.
2. The other Chicago team’s bullpen can blow games, too.
Buehrle left with a 3-1 lead, and MacDougal tacked on two more runs to Buehrle’s record. MacDougal had no control at all today, and wasn’t helped by catcher Toby Hall, who was playing his first game from coming off the DL for shoulder injuries and spelling A.J. against the lefty.
3. The Bullpen strikes back.
Howry and Dempster pitch 2 spotless innings, with 4 K’s. Man, did we need that.
4. Lilly struggles through
Lilly didn’t have the dominant curve or sharp command of his fastball, but managed to pitch out of trouble all game.
