    Телекоммуникации (telco) в перспективе WiMax
    2008-05-08 04:30:01

Tata Communications declares that it will invest 500 million dollars in wireless broadband on the WiMAX platform and is tying up with United States-based Telsima Corporation for infrastructure and equipment. WiMAX is a telecommunications technology that transfers data wirelessly over long distances and is seen as an alternative to cable linkages. Tata Communications is the first Indian telecom company to launch broadband services on the WiMAX platform on a large scale for retail consumers in the country. A commercial WiMAX network would enable customers to access video, education, music and business services, PTI news agency quoted Tata Communications Retail Business Unit president Shankar Prasad as saying in Mumbai. Sprint to have WiMAX Phones in 2008
    2008-02-29 12:20:37
New CEO, Dan Hesse mentioned yesterday that later this year Sprint will introduce dual-mode CDMA/WiMAX devices. This is a good thing for them as they need to do what they can to be the first company dropping 4G on us. Another great headline in a short span of days for the third ranked company after announcing their Simply Unlimited plan earlier this week. If they end up signing a slew of new customers with their rate plan, they'll need to build up the network to support it and WiMAX sure would help!Kind of ironic to think about #3 doing so poorly and thinking ahead to 4G technology while company #4 keeps reporting better numbers all the time and they have yet to launch their 3G stuff.AndroidGuys | The most trusted site for Google Android news and opinion.

    WiMAX : 100 million by 2014
    2008-02-05 16:03:00
WiMAX: 100 million by 2014 Posted by samc on February 4th, 2008 Telecommunications market research firm Maravedis today announced the publication of the fifth edition of its yearly report “WiMAX, LTE and Broadband Wireless Worldwide Market Trends 2008-2014.” Maravedis forecasts WiMAX subscribers to exceed 100 million by 2014. “WiMAX chipsets will start to be embedded in laptops in the second half of 2008, into handheld devices in 2009, and into consumer electronics by early 2010,” said Adlane Fellah, President and CEO of Maravedis and co-author of the report. On the technology side, the report confirms that both WiMAX and LTE are converging upon 4G service capabilities. LTE’s primary market, 3G operators, will be unlikely to adopt LTE until 2012-2014. “While LTE appears to have the decisive volume advantage, the lag between 3G evolution and the next generation mobile network will greatly benefit WiMAX,” said Robert Syputa, co-author of th

    Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access"Wimax"
    2008-01-16 22:50:14
WiMAX, the Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access, is a telecommunications technology aimed at providing wireless data over long distances in a variety of ways, from point-to-point links to full mobile cellular type access. It is based on the IEEE 802.16 standard, which is also called WirelessMAN. The name WiMAX was created by the WiMAX Forum, which was formed in June 2001 to promote conformance and interoperability of the standard. The forum describes WiMAX as "a standards-based technology enabling the delivery of last mile wireless broadband access as an alternative to cable and DSL."The terms "fixed WiMAX", "mobile WiMAX", "802.16d" and "802.16e" are frequently used incorrectly. Correct definitions are:802.16dStrictly speaking, 802.16d has never existed as a standard. The standard is correctly called 802.16-2004 and was developed by the IEEE 802.16 Task Group d. Therefore the project was called 802.16d, but the standard never was. However, since this standard is frequently called 802.16d, that term is also used in this article to assist readability.802.16eJust as 802.16d has never existed as a standard, neither has 802.16e. 802.16e is an amendment to 802.16-2004, and the amendment is properly referred to as 802.16e-2005. 802.16e-2005 is not a standard in its own right - since it is only an amendment, the original document (802.16-2004) has to be read and then the amendments added to it.Fixed WiMAXThis is a phrase frequently used to refer to systems built using 802.16-2004 ('802.16d') and the OFDM PHY as the air interface technology. Fixed WiMAX deployments do not cater for handoff between Base Stations, therefore the service provider cannot offer mobility.Mobile WiMAXA phrase frequently used to refer to systems built using 802.16e-2005 and the OFDMA PHY as the air interface technology. "Mobile WiMAX" implementations can be used to deliver both fixed and mobile services.UsesThe bandwidth and reach of WiMAX make it suitable for the following potential ap

    Ultraportables WiMAX
    2008-01-14 13:05:00
Ultraportables Announce WiMAX Posted by samc on January 7th, 2008 OQO demonstrated the first UMPC with embedded Sprint XOHM WiMAX at CES today. The newest model, which weighs 1 lb., sells for $1,299, a drop of $400 from the price versions shipped a year ago, a spokesman said. OQO also offers a high-end version that will include 64GB of storage and a display optimized to be used in sunlight. At the Consumer Electronics Show at Las Vegas this week, Intel will display ultramobile PCs based on Menlow architecture from vendors including Asus, BenQ and Lenovo. MIDs differ from UMPCs in that they are smaller, generally don’t have full keyboards and use Linux with Intel’s new mobile processor. Intel’s WiMAX products will include both laptops and smaller handheld devices such as UltraMobile PCs and Mobile Internet Devices. Intel’s Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs) will be moving to the faster, more power efficient Menlow platform, but won’t be available until mid-year. Intel is developing a WiMax silicon chip codenamed “Baxter Peak” for MIDs. It will be an option similar to how Echo Peak is an option for Centrino notebooks. Nokia will use Baxter Peak on its WiMax-enabled N-series internet tablets, expected to ship in 2008. Menlow-based devices will ship in the first half of 2008 and include the low-power Silverthorne processor and Poulsbo chipset. Intel didn’t release further details on that platform today. Montevina, Intel’s new laptop architecture, will also not be available until mid-year. Intel plans to add WiMax to Montevina laptops using Echo Peak, a minicard that integrates WiMax and Wi-Fi technology on one chip. Other WiMax-related announcements at CES: Networks In Motion, which develops wireless navigation and location-based services technology, said today that it is showing a new WiMax connected navigation system at CES. NIM said that the new hardware is a “proof of concept” which shows how WiMax can

Alvarion: Wave 2 Posted by samc on December 26th, 2007 Alvarion earlier this week said it had landed its first Tier I carrier deal for Mobile WiMAX equipment, but did not name the provider. Telephony believes the customer may be France Telecom. Alvarion, a relatively small Israeli broadband wireless company, could be propelled to the top ranks of the highly competitive WiMAX market, says the magazine Israeli business publication Globes reported that the Alvarion and FT were in talks for a WiMAX deployment. Alvarion vice president for strategy and marketing Rudy Leser said he could not comment on whether France Telecom was the customer, saying only that the carrier was a Tier 1 wireline and wireless operator with operations in multiple countries around the world. Leser said the deployment would take the form of commercial launch—not a trial—in multiple countries, using multiple spectrum bands ranging from 2.5 GHz to 3.5 GHz. That profile could easil

    2007-12-20 11:28:00
KDDI & Willcom to WiMAX Japan Posted by samc on December 18th, 2007 KDDI, Japan’s number two cellular carrier, will receive one of two WiMax licenses to be awarded soon by the Japanese government, a report said Tuesday. The KDDI group, called Wireless Broadband Planning, and one led by rival carrier Willcom will be recommended by Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications on Friday to a panel charged with selecting the groups to win the licenses, reports Reuters. The panel is expected to follow the ministry’s recommendations. Intel owns a 17.65 percent stake in KDDI’s Wireless Broadband Planning group. The stake is matched by East Japan Railway and Kyocera, and all three sit behind leading shareholder KDDI, which has a 32.26 percent stake. The WiMax services will operate in the 2.5GHz band and will be capable of providing data service at up to 20Mbps to terminals travelling at up to 100 kilometers per hour, according to the Japa

Recent WiMAX Announcements Posted by samc on December 11th, 2007 Here’s a snapshot of some recent Mobile WiMAX announcements: Sprint plans to launch its XOHM WiMax network by the end of this week. Sprint spokesman John Polivka said the soft launches will cover the downtown cores of Chicago, Baltimore and Washington but will rapidly expand outward. This initial launch will be limited only to Sprint employees and will focus on the central downtown areas of the test cities. This initial set of trials precedes the actual full trial networks that will be available to the general public starting in the first quarter of 2008. The company reportedly has 10,000 base stations ready to go, many of them on Sprint’s existing CDMA cell towers. Sprint will expand the coverage to areas that see high demand. Sprint has ordered 1750 base stations from its three vendors (Motorola, Samsung and Nokia), as well as 20,000 antennas. The company did not provide details on w

Intel Creating WiMAX, WiFi, DVB-H All-in-One Chip
    2007-12-13 11:27:14
Intel, one of the founding members of the Open Handset Alliance, has developed a test chip that ties in three very cool technologies into one. Imagine being able to use WiFi at home and having your phone automatically switch over to WiMAX for you when you leave the house or office. On top of that, you're able to watch digital video broadcasts all the while. Pretty swift stuff! "There is a shift from people wanting their content any time, anywhere to any device, any network, and the problem is there are too many radios,” said Jeff Hoffman, system architect for the wireless communications lab. Next Generation iPhone to Offer 3G, WiMax, and 24 Hour Talk Time?
    2007-10-03 21:38:00
You're probably guessing that the title is a cheap teaser designed to get everyone's attention while offering nothing but unfounded speculation about the mysteries of the universe. Well, you'd be wrong - for the most part. Sure, the title is intended to catch your eye, but there's some real meat here. While absolutely nothing is clear, news from part suppliers suggest that Apple may be eyeing up Intel's recently announced Moorestown MID (Mobile Internet Device) platform for use in an upcoming model of the iPhone. What's more, the perks mentioned in the title are just a sampling of what Moorestown is expected to bring to the table.Based on the upcoming 2008 Menlow MID platform, Moorestown will be the product of a new, cooler, 45-nanometer manufacturing process which Intel says will produce chips for mobile devices and handheld PCs that are ten times more power efficient than today's chips. Such power efficiency could result in an iPhone, or other mobile device, which can offer 24 hours of usage on a single charge, according to Intel. On top of the power saving features of Moorestown comes a beefy lineup of hardware offerings and support. The new chips will integrate CPU, GPU and memory controllers functions. Both Moorestown and it's predecessor, Menlow, are expected to support 3G, WiMAX (4G), hardware accelerated 3D such as OGL2.0, HD video decoding and more. In addition to the hardware benefits of switching to the new Intel MID platform, Apple will clearly gain a development advantage by bringing it's entire product line under the Intel x86 platform. Instead of developing or compiling OS X and it's components specially for the iPhone's custom ARM processor based platform, Apple will be able to directly share components and code between it's full-fledged PC version of OS X and it's mobile device version of OS X. Menlow is scheduled to be available in 2008 and though it won't offer the same power savings Moorestown is stated to, devices which use it should still bring to the table battery usage times meet or exceed today's standards. Moorestown is scheduled for production in 2009. [via Electronista]

    Sprint mobile WiMAX
    2007-08-15 21:02:00
Sprint's mobile WiMAX service called XOHM? Posted Aug 15th 2007 2:21AM by Thomas RickerFiled under: Wireless We have information from an anonymous tipster claiming that Sprint is set to take the wraps of their new WiMAX brand dubbed XOHM. It's anybody's guess at this point how you'd pronounce that ("x-ohm" or "zohm" perhaps) but we're told to expect a formal announcement as early as Thursday. The timing is certainly legit what with plans to have the 4G service up and running in select cities "by year-end 2007." We'd expect any new branding to encompass the combined efforts of those Clearwire and Google deals though our source ain't sayin'. Perhaps XOHM was the delayed little secret behind Sprint's "wireless evolution" teaser site which was pulled without explanation before its July 4th pop date. Who knows, but anything that moves us closer to a WiMax-enabled N800 and that "ultra thin" WiMax smartphone from Palm is fine by us.source : engadget.com

    First WiMax Device
    2007-08-10 20:11:30
The Nokia N800 will be the first device to run on Sprints WiMax network. Which is the 4G, really fast broadband network. This is the supposed next-gen widespread WiFi. The Nokia N800 Internet Tablet will replace the previous Nokia Internet Tablet that, from what I heard, wasn't a great success...Anyways this is a great step towards high network speeds on our phones. No one knows how much this thing will cost, or how much the WiMax will cost, but it shouldn't be too expensive. WiMax will be availiable in Chicago, Baltimore, and Washington DC at launch, with 19 more cities added by the end of 2008.Thank you for subscribing to my blog!

    WiMax 2012
    2007-06-29 19:41:00
Analyst Predicts 54m WiMax Subscribers by 2012; Devices Key By Glenn Fleishman Senza Fili Consulting’s latest WiMax report predicts a relatively large market for both mobile and fixed uses of “mobile” WiMax: The report says that 54m subscribers could be signed up by 2012, but that emerging markets and the U.S. will be key to WiMax’s worldwide uptake. 54m subscribers will be a relatively low number compared to broadband—300m broadband subscriptions are in use today, according to a report earlier this week—and quite low compared to the billions of cell phone voice users expected by 2012. The report author Monica Paolini notes that the truly mobile WiMax access devices—not nomadic ones that require AC power or are bulky—will lead to increased adoption. That’s the goal of Sprint and Clearwire, certainly; they want PC Card form factor WiMax cards next year. Paolini also suggests that portable data devices with WiMax built in will be key in developing nations for adoption.

Sprint explores options for WiMAX, ponders Clearwire deal
    2007-06-15 17:53:50
Looks like Sprint’s feverish approach to WiMAX just swallowed a chill pill, as the firm is reportedly “exploring new options for financing its ambitious plan.” In a presumed effort to “soothe investor concerns about the cost of the WiMAX plan,” the company is actually investigating a partnership or joint venture with Clearwire in order to simultaneously remove a potential competitor and gain access to the critical Clearwire markets in the southeastern US. Of course, Clearwire isn’t one to shy away from high stakes partnerships, and the FCC nod for a WiMAX-class laptop card that it garnered just last month could fit in quite well here. Still, Clearwire is refusing to comment just yet on whether this possibility is even feasible, but the mere mention of a spinoff likely means that Sprint isn’t feeling all too peachy about future WiMAX profitability. Montreal to get WiMAX services soon
    2007-06-15 15:23:28
Our neighbor to the north will soon boast its own WiMAX-based WiFi rollout, as Montreal is already set to become the “first Canadian city to deliver wireless Internet and mobile IP telephony to residents.” Apparently, Radioactif and Nomad Telecom are joining forcing to deploy the network across the metropolitan area, and it will be made first available to the oh-so-lucky residents of Montreal’s Plateau Mont-Royal neighborhood. By 2009, however, the network will blanket nearly 300 square kilometers of Montreal and service “around 90-percent” of its citizens, but those targeted for the first wave can expect the luxury to cost them “under $30 per month” when it launches in September. WiMax Cellphones
    2007-06-06 15:27:00
In continuation to my earlier post on the of launch of the mobile WiMax network, let us see how the WiMax handset market is shaping up. Samsung was first to unveil World's Mobile WiMAX Handset, the Samsung M8000 in early 2006.M8000 is a Windows Mobile handset with a built-in sliding QWERTY keyboard and is compatible with high speed broadband connectivity offered by WiBro (Koren broadband operator).Since then they have launched new Mobile WiMAX devices, the SPH-P9000 and the M8100 . The SPH-P9000 is a true Mobile WiMAX convergence device, which enables wireless broadband access and voice communications, while the M8100 is the first commercially available Mobile WiMAX PDA device. The SPH-P9000 is an UMPC-like convergence device capable of providing voice and multimedia data communications through Mobile WiMAX technology. Hailed by early reviewers as the "ultimate convergence machine", it combines Windows XP, a large 30GB hard disk, 256MB RAM, a 1GHz CPU, WiMAX, CDMA EV-DO, and a 1.3megapixel camera into a compact 5.6" X 3.7" X 1.17" size with a 5" display and weighing only 1.28lb. The SPH-P9000 comes with a full QWERTY keyboard for quick and painless typing and surfing, while the MP3 player, VOD, and camera functions provide easy access to a myriad of multimedia entertainment. In all, the SPH-P9000 will offer users a perfect device that marries work and play.LG is the other vendors which has launched their WiMAX KC1 PDA cell phone. KC1 is Equipped with a largish 2.8" TFT LCD capable of QVGA resolution, there's 64MB RAM on the KC1, with expansion support via a microSD memory card slot. Bluetooth is present as well, along with a 2 megapixel camera. The KC1 runs on Windows Mobile 5.0 and, not surprisingly, emulates the design standards set by the KG99 Chocolate Phone.

    Sprint's Mobile WiMAX Network
    2007-05-29 15:28:00
Sprint ( Sprint Nextel Corporation is the third largest cellular operator in USA, with 53.7 million subscribers) is engaged in design and deployment of Mobile WiMAX broadband network in full-swing. The Chicago and Washington D.C. areas have been chosen as initial WiMAX service areas with additional markets to be identified based on market-readiness estimates. The first market may be launched by the end of the year and they plan to reach at least 100 million people by year-end 2008.Sprint's WiMax network is based on the IEEE 802.16e-2005 standard, operates in the 2.5GHz band and is also termed as 4G network. The core 802.16e s contains three different air interfaces: single carrier, OFDM ( Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing)and OFDMA (Orthogonal Frequency Domain Multiple Access). Single carrier systems are targeted at the 10-66 GHz band, point-to-point for backhaul. OFDM (more commonly referred to as 802.16d) is the first WiMAX standard, intended for fixed broadband wireless access. The standard 802.16e-2005 used by Sprint, brings an enhanced air interface using OFDMA with enhanced performance and optimized to support mobility. It also adds support for advanced features such as MIMO ( Multiple-Input, Multiple-Output)and AAS (Advanced Antenna Systems) further improving the rate/reach of WiMAX technology in deployment.OFDM works by dividing a given spectrum block into a number of sub-channels, each of which is individually modulated and then transmitted orthogonally to minimize interference with one another. The result is faster, more robust radio links than can be achieved with alternative modulation/multiplexing schemes. It is often claimed, for example, that OFDM is more efficient, in terms of bits per Hertz, than CDMA and WCDMA (wideband code division multiple access) technology used in 3G systems, and/or delivers better performance in non-line-of-sight urban environments due to better resistance to multipath interference.OFDMA air interface has an added feature of multiple access duplexing in the time domain achieved by assigning ‘slots’ or ‘tiles’ on a dynamic per user basis. This scheme provides and efficient use of available spectrum allowing bandwidth (and ultimately usable data rate) sharing across users.WiMax is be the integration into existing 3GPP core networks.MIMO technology allows for either enhanced datarate, or enhanced coverage or reach. MIMO systems have several antennas allowing many, distinct signals to be simultaneously sent at the same time. WiMAX supports several different MIMO techniques such as Matrix A ‘Alamouti’ for improved reach/indoor coverage and Matrix B ‘Blast’ for enhanced datarates. The technique AAS also called beamforming, improves the spectral efficiency (bits/s/Hz) of the OFDMA air interface which can dramatically reduce the cost of deployments (Capex) and the typical throughput to the user. Multiple antennas give the ability to steer the beam from the base station to the user improves reach, and the ability to steer nulls reduces interference.Sprint WiMax network will will offer downstream speeds of 2Mbps to 4Mbps and combined with fast uplinks, it will offer enough bandwidth for mobile videoconferencing, transfers of large enterprise files and other applications. At the current levels UMTS can not offer anything comparable at this stage but UMTS is already established itself and WiMax has still to prove itself as a viable cellular network in marketplace.
