WCS Game 4: Red Wings 8, Avalanche 2
    2008-05-02 08:56:17
Well, thank god that's over. Despite the hope that they would leave the series with at least one win, the Avalanche once again completely crapped the bed and lost to the Red Wings 8-2.  The sweep in the Western Conference Semifinals worsened the Avs' record against the Wings this season to 0-8.   0-8. Of all the teams to go winless against, why the Red Wings? Detroit fans can now gloat and revel in the fact that their extremely talented (and healthy) team easily dispatched a former arch rival completely decimated by injuries and crippled by poor coaching, both of which plagued the Avalanche all season long.  The only exception was the first round series against the Wild, when everything seemed to come together. Just as the Avs got healthy, coordinated, and backed up by a solid goalie, it all fell apart again.  Ryan Smyth, Scott Hannan, Paul Stastny, Wojtek Wolski and Peter Forsberg all missed significant chunks of the series.  Can anyone imagine the Red

WCS Game 4: Red Wings At Avalanche, Preview And Open Thread
    2008-05-01 13:00:03
In some ways, it's hard to believe this could be the last game of the season for the Avalanche.  In other ways, it's hard to believe the season didn't end on April 6th.  But I'm not going to write a season wrap-up just yet, since the Avs could still conceivably win tonight and keep their playoff hopes on life support for a bit longer. Paul Stastny, Ryan Smyth and Wojtek Wolski are all out for sure.  They won't be back even if the Avs pull a Red Sox and make it to the next round.  Marek Svatos, if he's off his crutches by now, has been warming up the local golf courses for his teammates.  And, this just in: Peter Forsberg is out as well. The Avalanche will dress seven defensemen instead because, well, they can. Tonight TJ Hensick and David Jones will get another chance to show off their developing skill sets, since they'll have to play significant minutes filling in for the injured regulars on the team.  Poor Jones has been struggling to score goals sin

WCS Game 3: Red Wings 4, Avalanche 3
    2008-04-30 07:48:58
Going into the all-important Game 3 last night, the Avs needed to get the offense going and take the play to Detroit.  At least, that's what Avs fans thought.  The coaching staff didn't figure that out 'till the second intermission.  By then, Paul Stastny was out after an awkward leg-on-leg collision with Henrik Zetterberg, Peter Forsberg had already left once for some kind of ankle problem and then returned, and the refs had decided that they'd rather just get the series over with ASAP. The game got started off on a fairly even pace and then Cody McLeod of all people scored with a tip-in of a T.J. Hensiiick shot after a nice feed from Tyler "Whipping Boy" Arnason.  The jubilation in Le Can lasted for a couple of minutes until the Detroit puck-possession game got into full swing.  Then the shelling of Jose Theodore commenced with full fury.  He-who-wasn't-previously-named saw 19 shots in the 1st period.  Two got past him: a PP goal from Pavel Datsy

WCS Game 3: Red Wings At Avalanche, Preview And Open Thread
    2008-04-29 13:08:05
Okay, first of all, I'm proud to announce that I've been meeting with a psychologist for the past two days and major progress has been made.  I'm no longer superstitious about goalie names.  The therapist helped me to realize that not saying the name(s) of the Avalanche goalie in the past two game threads didn't do jack to prevent the Red Wings from scoring a crap ton of goals.  So I'm over it.  Feel free to compliment Jose Theodore (or attack him) in the thread, as MHH no longer believes in silly things like superstitions. As for Theodore, I still think Budaj should get the start tonight, but I understand the other side, and the ESPN preview (linked below) suggests that Theodore was indeed still sick in game 2, so both of his consecutive meltdowns may have been due to fever and nausea and not a simple reversion to his 2007 self.  Of course, that begs the question, why the hell did Coach Q let him play?  But whatever.  That's in the past. Tonight'

WCS Game 2: Avalanche At Red Wings, Preview And Open Thread
    2008-04-26 06:37:05
Gut check time.  As in, seriously, every Avalanche player should check their stomachs, ribs, and any other body parts for illness, sprains, breaks or any other kind of injury before suiting up this afternoon against the Red Wings. Wojtek Wolski, we learned yesterday, is out for the rest of the series.  Peter Forsberg is as reliable as Republicans banning abortion or Democrats creating universal healthcare.  Don't expect him to play.  If he does, it will be a nice surprise. His absence clears the way for some guy named Jaroslav Hlinka to play today, whoever that is.  I vaguely remember him, but it seems like years ago since we saw him on the ice.   Dater says: Jaroslav Hlinka needs to have the attitude that "I’m going to play the game of my life tomorrow." If there was ever a chance for a guy to start proving that he is a PLAYER in this league, tomorrow is it. I don’t think Peter Forsberg is going to play in Game 2, so Hlinka has the ch

WCS Game 1: Red Wings 4, Avalanche 3
    2008-04-25 07:03:08
photo courtesy of Karl Gahring/Denver Post Johan Franzen is a beast. The 6-3, 220 pound center was the key player for the Red Wings early on in last night's game 1 against the Colorado Avalanche in the Western Conference Semifinals, leading his team to a 4-3 victory.  He scored the third and fourth goals (the latter of which turned out to be the game-winner) for his team and also had an assist.  All this in just 16:35 of ice time. He also inadvertently took out Wojtek Wolski when he careened into him after a first period hip check from Ruslan Salei (who was awful early in the game).  Wolski's early departure, combined with the loss of Peter Forsberg to another "groin injury" and Jose Theodore to some kind of horrible stomach illness, were just too much for the Avs. Theodore was yanked from the game early in the second period for two reasons: one, he got shelled and had no defense in front of him; two, he was sick as a dog and probably shouldn't have played at all. &n

Better Know A Rivalry: The Red Wings
    2008-04-23 09:13:13
So the Wings it is.  After the Flame-Outs lived up to their clever nickname once again by losing to the Jeremy Roenick-led San Jose Sharks last night (at least Mike Keenan got to yank a goalie, his favorite hobby), the matchups for the Western Conference Semifinals have been set. San Jose will face Dallas. Colorado will face Detroit.  Hoo boy. Now, before I get going, let me state one more time for the record: the "Blood Feud" between the Red Wings and the Avalanche is over.  It ended before the Lockout.  The lineups of both teams are almost completely different than the last time the two teams met in the playoffs (2002!).  With the exceptions of names like Hasek, McCarty, Forsberg, Foote and Sakic, nobody is left who has first-hand experience of the brutal, vicious regular season and playoff games between the two teams in the 90s and early Aughts. But that doesn't mean we, as Avalanche fans, wouldn't love to see the Dead Wings crash and burn hard in the

First Round Matchup---Wings Fans Say "Bring It"
    2008-03-21 10:07:18
At this point, it still looks highly possible that the Avs will make the playoffs in the eighth seed.  If they do, then their first opponent would be the Detroit Red Wings, a team that absolutely dominated them during the regular season. Oh, and there's some kind of history between the two.  Really?  I had no idea. Am I worried?  At this point, I don't think it matters who the Avs play in the first round---they're probably going to lose.  I hate to be pessimistic, but be honest, this team doesn't exactly scream "capable" right now, does it?  Well, capable of losing maybe, but whatev. The Wings' diehards are not afraid of the Avs.  In fact, they want this matchup bad: Yes, laying waste to the Dive sounds like a glorious way to begin the Spring.  Fun, most likely violent, and most certainly satisfying.  From our narrow-minded fan’s perspective, it is the matchup of choice.  More than that though, Denver’s the team we want

And She Flaps Her Wings Like Annoyance
    2008-02-21 10:48:00
The evil School Faerie decided she wanted to be quite the little pest today. I just saw an email for my British Canon class saying that my TA wants everyone to have a full, six-page first draft of our final essays for the course by tomorrow for class (11:00 AM). I find that rather annoying. The email was sent on the 17th, but it still seems rather ridiculous for me to write a rough draft. I understand that for some people rough drafts (for essays) is really helpful. It's not for me. It never has been. That's not to say I'm smarter than other people, it just means I use a different process. I don't write good essays when I think ahead. And to be honest, when I write this essay and do this draft, I'll likely not touch it again until the day before the real essay is due. I don't like doing drafts. It forces me to think too far ahead of time and I like the pressure of having to churn out an essay in 48 hours rather than 336 (or 2 weeks). So the overall result of having to do this

    Game 60: Red Wings 4, Avalanche 0
    2008-02-19 07:39:21
For a second I wondered if Ian Laperriere's crushing hit on Nicklas Lidstrom (and Lidstrom's subsequent exit due to injury) would spark the waning rivalry between the Avalanche and the Red Wings.  But then I realized that you can't have a rivalry if one team never beats the other.  After losing 4-0 last night, the Avs finished this season's series against Detroit with the same score: 4-0.  Zero wins against a team they used to frustrate and infuriate on a regular basis just a few years ago. The game last night was a sad, sorry affair, much like the season as a whole has started to become.  The Red Wings went up 2-0 on two fairly lucky bounces and shots in the first period, but the Avs at least tied them for shots and seemed at least partially interested in playing hockey.  After the first, though, it was all downhill.  All the life drained out of the team and they coasted through the rest of regulation barely making an impact at all.  They were outsh

Game 60: Red Wings At Avalanche, Preview And Open Thread
    2008-02-18 12:15:16
Well, the good news for the Detroit Red Wings is that they should have no trouble ending their six-game losing streak tonight against the Avalanche.  They're no doubt crazy motivated to win right now, playing against an old rival and struggling to regain the momentum that has carried them through the season up until just recently.  Of course, six straight losses means they still only have 15 for the whole season, but you know they're tired of seeing that "L" in the box scores.   The Avs, on the other hand, are starting to embrace the L.  Or, I should say, "Commit To The L."  No team looks more committed to losing right now than Colorado, with the exception of the Flyers, of course.  Funny that those two teams are supposed to be the top two choices of Peter Forsberg, who is now rumored to be interested in playing for Minnesota.  If his ankle doesn't explode (it will), his superb two-way play would fit right in with the Wild's defense-first system.

    KFC Honey BBQ Wings.
    2008-01-09 21:29:32
Once a regular menu item, these sweet, saucy wings are now added to the KFC menu on a "limited-time-only" basis in many markets. So how are we to get that sticky sauce all over our faces and hands during those many months when we're cruelly denied our Honey BBQ Wings? Now it's as easy as whipping up a clone that re-creates a crispy breading on the chicken wings, and then slathering those puppies in a tasty knock-off of the sweet, tangy honey BBQ sauce. "Limited-time-only" signs - we laugh in your direction!Sauce1 1/4 cup ketchup1/3 cup white vinegar1/4 cup molasses1/4 cup honey1 teaspoon liquid smoke1/2 teaspoon salt1/4 teaspoon onion powder1/4 teaspoon chili powder6 to 8 cups vegetable shortening1 egg, beaten1 cup milk2 cups all-purpose flour2 1/2 teaspoons salt3/4 teaspoon pepper3/4 teaspoon MSG20 chicken wing pieces1. Combine the sauce ingredients in a small saucepan over medium heat. Stir until ingredients are well combined and bring to a boil. Then reduce heat and simmer uncovered for 15 to 20 minutes.2. As sauce is simmering, heat up 6 to 8 cups of shortening in a deep fryer set to 350 degrees.3. Combine the beaten egg with the milk in a small bowl.4. In another small bowl, combine the flour, salt, pepper, and MSG.5. When shorteningl is hot, dip each wing first in the flour mixture, then into the milk and egg mixture, and back into the flour. Arrange wings on a plate until each one is coated with batter.6. Fry the wings in the shortening for 9 to 12 minutes or until light golden brown. If you have a small fryer, you may wish to fry 10 of the wings at a time. Drain on paper towels or a rack.7. When the sauce is done, brush the entire surface of each wing with a light coating of sauce. Serve immediately.Makes 2 to 4 servings (20 wings).TidbitsLiquid smoke is a flavoring found near the barbecue sauces and marinades. Use hickory-flavored liquid smoke if you have a choice. Game 37: Red Wings 4, Avalanche 2
    2007-12-28 06:35:44
Well, it wasn't a huge surprise, but it was disappointing nonetheless.  The Red Wings beat the Avalanche 4-2 at home in front of the first sellout crowd at the Pepsi Center in a long time.  Helping fill out The Can was a fair number of Detroit fans, and they certainly went home happy---which I'm sure they're used to by now. It's annoying to hear, especially when Mike Haynes and Peter McNab go on and on about it for sixty minutes, but the Wings are certainly the best team in hockey.  They're so deep it's ridiculous, especially considering that they're also the oldest, shortest and lightest team in the entire NHL.  Small in stature, huge in talent. The Avs put up a decent showing, however, keeping the feared Detroit power play onslaught at bay by taking just one minor penalty (Brad Richardson for high sticking) the whole game.  The Colorado defense, though prone to an occasional Karlis Skrastins meltdown, was competent and confident through most of the

Especially if he's performing a cabaret while flying your festive "Pink Plane" straight from the sunny shores of San Francisco to the legendary Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras in Sydney, Australia. The February 26th flight, following what promises to be a memorable "Get-Onboard -Girlfriend" pre-takeoff fete at San Francisco International Airport, is even gay-tuning the inflight entertainment. Drag queens and pink cocktails will stalk the aisles as gay-themed movies, music, and contests fill the 14-hour adventure.

    Modern Shrub Rose 'Golden Wings'
    2007-08-23 12:26:00
Modern Shrub Rose 'Golden Wings'Back to the roses again. This was a really pretty Shrub Rose. Even though it only has 5 petals, which I think makes it a single rose. A single rose, by definition has a petal count of 5 to 12 and the flowers often close during the night time hours. This rose was bred in 1956 by Roy E. Shepard. He was an outstanding rose historian and authored the book, The History of the Rose. Golden Wings has a nice strong fragrance and since I photographed it last weekend a propensity to re-bloom. Like many Shrub Roses it can tolerate a little shade. Parentage:Seed: Soeur ThérèsePollen: R. spinosissima altaica x Ormiston Roy

Markov done with Red Wings, off to Russia?
    2007-08-04 00:58:34
The Windsor Star’s Dave Waddell reports that unrestricted free agent forward Danny Markov is not likely to re-sign with the Detroit Red Wings. rumormethisCopyright While Red Wings GM Ken Holland tells Waddell the club remains interested in the Russian blueliner, he admits that Markov’s asking price is more than they are willing to pay. The Red Wings are said to be offering “a short-term deal” at around $2.5 million. Markov is believed to be seeking a long-term deal in the $3 million per season range. “Money more than term is the problem,” Holland said. “We’d love to have him back, but he’s still just sitting out there.” Now it appears the Holland may have some competition for Markov. Word coming out of Russia is that Russian Elite League team Salavat Yulayev has offered Markov a one-year, $1.7 million deal. One defenseman the Red Wings are sure to sign is restricted free agent Derek Meech. “We think he’s rea

Red Wings want to pull the trigger, but can’t find right target
    2007-08-02 16:05:41
Detroit Red Wings GM Ken Holland tells Ansar Khan of mLive.com that he would like to add a top-six forward and some depth on defense. rumormethisCopyright With between $4 and $6 million in salary cap space, the Red Wings could make some substantial additions to their roster. No moves are imminent at this time, though. Holland is yet to find a forward that fits the skill level required, and under the salary range he would like. “No one on the open market excites us; some we have interest in, but not at the money they’re seeking,” Holland said. “Right now, we’d have a lot of money at the trade deadline.” As for bolstering his defense, Holland admits to speaking with Danny Markov’s agent about a contract. However, the former Red Wing and unrestricted free agent is looking for more money than Holland is willing to offer. According to Khan, Holland’s offer of $2.5 million per season he put forth at last month’s NHL Entry Draft has

The Red Wings To Pursue Forsberg?
    2007-07-30 11:33:34
As Avalanche fans' beloved Foppa gingerly takes his first few passes of a rink in Sweden on his newly-rebuilt right ankle, more than a few teams are pondering what it will take to add him to their rosters.  Besides the Avs, rumors suggest others including his former teams the Flyers and the Predators (fat chance), as well as the Rangers(?!!) and just about every other team will be making serious offers if and when he decides to return to the NHL. Add into that equation: the Red Wings?!! Peter Forsberg is recovering from yet another surgery on his right ankle, which has caused him constant grief since 2001. That, though, hasn't stopped him from attracting interest from clubs like the Red Wings, who still recognize him as one of the game's great clutch players. General manager Ken Holland has told Forsberg's agent, Don Baizley, that the Wings are interested in adding the Swedish superstar to their lineup. Peca’s demands, Stars, Ducks and Penner, Selanne, and the Red Wings
    2007-07-27 22:49:01
The Toronto Star is reporting that unrestricted free agent forward Mike Peca is looking to sign a one-year deal at approximately $1.25 million. One team that is apparently interested in Peca, the Toronto Maple Leafs, have been made aware of the veteran’s demands. rumormethisCopyright “The ball’s basically in their court,” Peca’s agent, Don Meehan, said yesterday. “They (Leafs) are thinking things over and they’ll get back to me.” With 13 forwards under contract and Antti Miettinen and Jussi Jokinen yet to be signed, Mike Heika of The Dallas Morning News suggests that the Dallas Stars may be moving “at least” one forward before the season starts. While Anaheim Ducks GM Brian Burke has not commented on the Edmonton Oilers tendering forward Dustin Penner an offer sheet on Thursday, Eric Stephens of the Los Angeles Times suggests that Anaheim Ducks GM Brian Burke will match the offer. Burke has said in the past that he would

Roenick, Axelsson, Blue Jackets and their 2008-09 budget, Blue Jackets and UFAs, and the Red Wings
    2007-07-23 04:15:40
According to Kevin Paul Dupont of The Boston Globe, veteran forward Jeremy Roenick would be willing to accept the league minimum so he could play for the Boston Bruins next season. However, Bruins management are not interested. rumormethisCopyright Dupont also reports that the Minnesota Wild were keen on acquiring Bruins forward P.J. Axelsson. Once they picked up forward Petr Kalus for goalie Manny Fernandez, they lost interest in Axelsson. Michael Arace of The Columbus Dispatch reports that the Columbus Blue Jackets have set their payroll budget for next season at $40 million. Blue Jackets management believe the club needs to “at least break even to maintain the long-term health of the franchise.” Arace also reports that the Blue Jackets may very well be done exploring any signing of the remaining unrestricted free agents. Being on a budget and in the midst of re-building, it’s questionable how much any UFA addition would help improve the club’s place in

Red Wings will remain patient in search for top-six forward; make offer to Markov
    2007-07-21 17:13:28
Dave Waddell of the Windsor Star reports that the Detroit Red Wings have the cap space and the intent to improve their roster. rumormethisCopyright However, 21 days into free agency, there’s only slim pickings left. Especially in the forward ranks. “We’d like to add a top-six forward, but in all honesty there’s just not much left in the free agent market that would fit our needs,” Wings senior vice president Jim Devellano said. “We have about $5-million to spend, but we’re not just going to whittle it away on third- or fourth-line players. We’re content to wait. That’s a lot of money to have available at the trade deadline.” Both Peter Forsberg and Teemu Selanne remain on the market, but their playing futures in the NHL are up in the air. Forsberg because of injury and Selanne because he is contemplating retirement. “They would fit our needs nicely, but only for the short term,” Devellano said. “There h

Red Wings have ‘zero’ interest in Yashin
    2007-07-12 16:58:12
Detroit Red Wings officials are denying reports in Russia’s Sport Express newspaper that the club is interested in signing unrestricted free agent forward Alexei Yashin. Red Wings senior Vice-President Jimmy Devellano told Ansar Khan of mLive.com that the rumors have no validity. “We have no interest in him — I mean zero,” Devellano said. However, Devellano admits that GM Ken Holland is looking to add another forward. The Red Wings have between $4 million and $6 million in salary cap space to acquire players, depending on whether the club will choose to apply the $2 million in bonuses goalie Dominik Hasek could attain this year, this season or the next. “We would like a top-six winger, but there’s nobody out there. We’re going to hold the money. Who knows what might happen during the season. We’re not going to sign guys we don’t like.”

Red Wings interested in Markov — at right price
    2007-07-12 05:33:17
Detroit Red Wings GM Ken Holland confirmed to Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press that he has talked to the representatives for unrestricted free agent defenseman Danny Markov about a possible return to Motown. However, the two sides remain far apart on a deal. According to Holland, Markov is “looking for more money than we’re prepared to offer right now.” St. James also notes that even tough Holland has 12 forwards under contract (not including prospect Igor Grigorenko), he is still “perusing the market for another forward.”

Red Wings Sign Old Fart Dallas Drake To One-Year Deal
    2007-07-09 20:07:00
Dallas Drake, the gritty, extremely old right wing enforcer (and former captain) of the St. Louis Blues has signed a one-year deal with the Detroit Red Wings, of all teams. I guess this puts to rest any talk that he might (or should) become a member of the Avalanche. Turns out he went the completely opposite direction after all. Looks like we'll be seeing much more of this over the course of the coming season.

Briere To Flyers, Rafalski To Wings, Jesus Himself Still Considering Options
    2007-07-01 22:49:00
At least, it seems like everybody---even Baby Jesus---is in the free agent running today. The signing orgy continues, with Daniel Briere agreeing to a whopper 8-year deal including a "no move" clause with the Flyers (for $52 million). To fill the hole left by Mathieu Schneider, the Dead Wings have signed Brian Rafalski, a Michigan native. Too bad, I kind of liked him. There was some talk about Yanic Perreault being pursued by the Avs to improve their face off percentages, but that didn't pan out because he just signed with the Blackhawks.Oh, and speaking of 'Hawks, former Avalanche forward Brett McLean (who started his career with Chicago) has signed with the Florida Panthers along with Richard Zednick. No word yet on Ryan Smyth, Scott Gomez or Chris Drury, the three big boys yet to go.UPDATE: Smyth is rumored to be on the cusp of a multi-year deal with the Avalanche.

Schill Shut Down; Lester Waiting In The Wings?
    2007-06-20 22:42:00
The Red Sox announced that Curt Schilling has been placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to this past Monday. The MRI on his shoulder showed no damage, but he had a cortisone shot and thought their might have been a touch of tendonitis there. The Red Sox decided to edge on the side of caution and shut him down. That means he will be out until July 3, which is the Red Sox first meeting of the year with the Devil Rays. Josh Beckett will pitch this coming Sunday against the Padres, taking Schilling's turn, and Julian Tavarez will open the series in Seattle on Monday. So now the speculation will revolve around who will take Schilling's place. They don't have to make that decision until after the weekend, but this could mean the return of Jon Lester to the Red Sox. He's been pitching very well at Pawtucket, but he had a shaky outing today at Indianapolis, walking four in five innings and giving up three runs and striking out three.Another logical candidate maybe Kason Gabbard,

Early week roundup, Red Wings get a fight!
    2007-03-28 07:47:00
This past Saturday was a slow night. Usually Saturdays bring a lot of rough stuff but not this time. There were only two fights. In the Thrashers-Penguins game, Keith Tkachuk and Maxime Talbot dropped the gloves but Talbot had no chance in this one as Tkachuk threw all the punches (none landed though). Decision to Tkachuk. The other fight of the night was a heavyweight bout between Derek Boogaard and Raitis Ivanans. It wasn't the slugfest that we all hoped for, but Ivanans showed he can hang in there with the "Boogieman." It looked like both guys didn't land any punches but they both threw quite a few. By the way I really hate those Minnesota Wild homer broadcasters. I know most if not all television broadcasters are homers but the Wild broadcasters are way over being homers and just plain old annoying at times. View the Boogaard-Ivanans fight below.Derek Boogaard vs Raitis IvanansOn Sunday there was only one fight, with Ian Laperriere and Jeff Cowan having a good bout. Laperriere won

TSN (TV) is reporting that the Florida Panthers have traded forward Todd Bertuzzi to the Detroit Red Wings. It’s believed that the Panthers will receive a conditional draft pick (based on team performance and the number of games played by Bertuzzi) and prospect Shawn Matthias. Should the Red Wings sign Bertuzzi in the summer, the Panthers will also receive a second-rounder. More to follow… Sponsored By: NHL Salary Cap Information Featuring all 30 NHL teams.
