America’s Heroes at Work: Making the Transition from Warrior to Worker
    2008-08-21 13:06:09
It is hard enough to reenter civilian life after spending time in combat, but when you come back with injuries or other problems, making that transition can be so much tougher. For soldiers returning with Traumatic Brain Injury or Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, things can be particularly difficult, especially when it comes to finding work.

Asihwarya Rai admitted that she will be playing a role of a sex worker
    2008-06-19 11:00:30
Asihwarya Rai admitted that she will be playing a role of a sex worker in American remake of a French movie CHAOS. It is reported that ash has asked the final script of the film and will act in the movie if her hubby gives her the permission. According to some sources in the house of Bachchans it is pa Amitabh who encourages ash to act and so he without even consulting Abhishek has given the permission for his daughter in law to play the sex worker role. Since this movie will be shot in an American way and so ash has to do some steamy scenes which involve her in a bed scene with her co star and a intercourse scene in which she has to cover her assets with only her panty on in a car, when the cops chase her. Some scenes will also involve her in some revealing clothes revealing her bosom and her inner garments. She has to depict a street sex worker in the film. But according to ash the whole scenes will be shot in a polished way. Let’s hope so.

Toyota gets attacked for worker rights abuses
    2008-06-19 08:49:00
The top is a tough place to be. Just ask Toyota, which is now facing charges of worker right abuses, including the use of sweat shops and human trafficking. As we've reported before, Japan even has a word for being overworked to death: karoshi. Toyota plants are not immune to this stress-related disease, as workers at its plants have indeed suffered death due to working too hard. These facts have caught the attention of The National Labor Committee, which has an entire report worked up that alleges Toyota over-works and under-pays its Japanese employees and has ties to various unsavory Dictators. It's also been well established that Toyota does not want its American workforce unionized. The report is being directly targeted at Prius-driving celebrities who see Toyota as the shining green beacon in a world of pollution-spewing car companies. Whether or not this report has all its facts straight, if famous Toyota supporters in Hollywood react to these allegations, Toyota could indeed hav

Will Aishwarya play a sex worker?
    2008-06-09 02:33:02
According to a source plans are afoot to bring Ash and the ethereal Meryl Streep together in an American production of Chaos.Says a source, "They ran the concept with Meryl and Ash and they were game .They need to Americanize the theme because Chaos was a very French movie. But yes, in principle Ash is on for this film."Another international project that Aishwarya has given the nod to is Roland Joffe's Singularity with Brendan Fraser.Speaking on Singularity Ash says, "I've asked them for the final draft of the script. Now the time factor has to be worked out. The time they want is devoted to Mani Sir (Ratnam)'s project.New dates have to be worked out. There're so many projects that I want to do but because of the dates or a delay I can't. There're only that number of assignments I can take on. I've never done more work that I can do. I never can."In the meanwhile Aishwarya gets ready to shoot for Shankar's Robot and Mani Ratnam's film with Abhishek.Informs the actress, "There has been

A Grassroots Worker's Work is Never Done
    2008-02-16 07:15:00
I apologize for my absence - has it really been 10 days since my last post? It is not for lack of subject matter - I am constantly parking ideas in the back of my head - I have a laundry list of comments I want to make about topics in the news or ideas that require some research. And I apologize to my regular visitors whose blogs I have not been visiting either. Everyday I wish I could sit at my desk and synthesize my thoughts. But over the past weeks, I playcatch-up with myself every day. I think my family is beginning to get frustrated with my less than enthusiastic attitude toward the household chores - I admit the light bulbs need to be changed in more than a few darkened rooms, I only wonder, why has nobody else bothered to changed them?I continue to be swept up in the excitement of this election. When Connecticut won the primary on February 4, I thought I would return to the regularity and the rhythm of life before Obama. However, I have never been involved in a political grassr

Who to Join in Helping the Poor: St. Vincent de Paul Society, Catholic Worker Movement, ... Priests for Life?
    2007-10-01 01:15:02
Ministering to the poor is something that comes natural to Catholic Christians as we strive for greater union with Christ and love for our neighbor. One thing to keep in mind if we have entered the marriage vocation, is that we cannot sacrifice our family in order to work for the poor. However, as a family gets more established more free time becomes available to spend helping one's neighbor. If possible, do some volunteering as a family. This helps unify the family and parents set a great example for their children. There are many types of poverty to address - lack of morality/spirituality, loneliness, lack of education, and lack of material need, just to name a few. Pray and decide which kind of poverty you are feeling called to minister to. The most common type of poverty when people think of the word "poverty" is the lack of material need. There are many Catholic and non-Catholic organizations one can get involved with to minister to the materially poor. But Catholics need to do some research before getting involved with these organizations because they can have very different philosophies on how to help the poor. The main question these philosophies boil down to is: "What is their view of life?" Is it a burden or is it a gift from God? Secular organizations that help the materially poor often see life as a burden, since many of them deem anti-life measures such as abortion and sterilization to be good weapons in the war against poverty. Sadly, some Catholic organizations implicitly agree with this view on life by their deliberate silence on topics such as these. To me it seems like a Catholic organization cannot exclude the right to life in its work to help the poor. Who is poorer than the person without the right to live? To my knowledge, the only Catholic group to successfully synthesize aiding the materially poor and the right to life is the Missionaries of Charity order of nuns started by Mother Teresa. If anyone reading this knows of any other group, I would like to know. The other Catholic groups that help the poor have been so silent in defending these poor that groups that focus solely on the abortion issue have had to be established. Sadly, they are often branded as "narrow minded" and "single issue" groups that ignore the needs of the materially poor outside of the womb. So find out about the organization you choose to volunteer with, and if you find yourself in a situation hostile to the Gospel of the fullness Life, be not afraid to evangelize! Pax et Bonum, Daniel

Rumble: I Am an Aid Worker. And a Woman. Help!
    2007-09-25 10:24:00
In the previous post, Shylock explored, in a ironical, cynical, self-criticizing way, what personal future we, aid workers have. We wonder the earth, gradually getting used to travel all the time, often in harsh places, and very often in search of a thrill. Gradually we get addicted to it all.But is there life after this.. after this life of a gypsy? Do we become gypsy disasters after years of behaving like a disaster gypsy, roaming from one emergency to the next?No matter how much we chuckle reading the previous post, in the end, it is not funny. Far from it. Many humanitarian workers have a problem to find 'a life after this'.. But it is even more sad to realize how few actually "have a life even now"... Even now, many forget, or at least compromise, their personal life because of their addiction. The addiction to the horizon, to the adrenaline. And now I want to you stop for a moment, no matter what you are doing. What I am going to tell you, is very close to my heart...No matter how you twist and turn it. The professional world is still a man's world. This world in general is still a man's world. It has been for hundreds of centuries. From the time men dragged women into their cages by their hair, we have come a long way, but we are not there yet. "There" being "offering equal chances, and equal opportunities to women".Here is how I see it. (and don't forget I am a man, and no matter how hard I try, I will always be a man, even if I try to look at things from a woman's perspective): I look around me, and see people -men and women- alike, with loads of personal challenges through the work they do... But then I look again, and see that in most management functions in this business - the humanitarian world -, men hold the key functions (and most of them come from the first world, but let's leave that aside for a moment). I look once more, and see most administrative support positions are filled by women. Many women in this business are strong, well educated, hard working people. Many of them are young, full of energy, inspiration and aspirations. The new generation of women have been encouraged (and enabled) by their parents to get a good education. They are ambitious to develop themselves personally and professionally. Many of these young women whizz through their twenties like a breeze, and some climb up (if all goes well), the professional ladder. All of a sudden they find themselves in their mid thirties, somewhere in the professional chain and ask "hey where is my personal life gone to?". And that is where the challenges start. If all goes well, they find a partner. If all goes well. As we - men - are not always too happy to live with a partner who has a demanding career. Even fewer like it when that career takes 'our woman' away on duty travel. Heaven forbids that 'her career' would even have her live far away from us, in some dark and remote humanitarian crisis area. "If all goes well" they find a partner, as too often at their mid thirties, what men are "available" on the "partner market"? Those coming out of their first long relationship, and not looking for something long term. The 'celibataires eternelles' or 'commito-fobes'. Those who have not made up their mind what the hell they want. The 'players'. And those already in a relationship. Or those who have failed in relationships so far.. (and all of that is a whole different discussion which I would love to have over a glass of Prosecco). So "if all goes well", a partner is found. And then? "A career" you say? In this world where, no matter what, a woman is still supposed to not only bare the children, but also spend most of her time raising them? Where a woman is still supposed to do most of the household stuff? [if you are a man, think about it... If you don't agree with me, think again... Who spends most of the time with the kids, working for/in the house? You or your partner?].So, what then? Most women are the ones making the compromise then.. Either give up their career, or work part time, etc...If they don't, the juggle of kids, house, husband and career becomes a full time challenge. The other evening, I went with E. over all the women we knew. And we tried to flag those we thought had found a good balance between kids, house, husband and career. And are successful in all. We found one. One woman out of the dozens of women we know, we found one. That is a sad observation. And even more sad, when we realized that lady does not work in the humanitarian "business".So, all you ladies out there. And specifically those of you in the humanitarian world! In my "The Dudettes" short story I tried (in my cynical and ironical way) pay a tribute to you all. But come and have your say too. Am I seeing things in a too dark, negative way? Am I seeing things too much from a "male" perspective? You tell me. So com'on all you strong women out there, have your say! Click on 'comments' below this post to see the other comments, and to chip in with your thoughts...Update! Update! Read all about it! Hey E.! I found another one. A lady that has successfully juggled a career, kids, family, home. I think..! And this one actually works in the humanitarian world. Yuuuhuuu.. I found one!! I found one!!!

Rumble: I Am an Aid Worker. Help!
    2007-09-24 14:35:00
In The New Gypsies, posted on The Aid Workers Network, Shylock wrote:"You're an aid worker with 5-10 years experience under your belt. You earn a pittance but it works for you because you are non-resident at home so you don't pay tax, you are catered for on assignment so you don't pay rent and your mortgage is covered by the people renting your place because you are never there. You can't hold down a relationship for more than 3 months and you secretly know that despite what you tell him/her its really not because you're only ever there for 3 months... its because you're addicted to independence.Things are OK now but you're approaching 40. Shouldn't you grow up?Seriously though... what does the future hold? What *can* the future hold for us?Option 1. You go back to a headquarter job. Instead of doing what you want to do, you now advise people who are doing what you used to do. You earn the same more or less as you did before, but your costs of living shoot skywards because you're now paying tax, rent/mortgage and utilities... You consider sharing accommodation and, bingo, you're a student again!Option 2. You go work for the UN. Keep the job you love and the lifestyle that goes with it. Your salary jumps to levels that used to get you all riled after a few dirty martinis back when you used to work for "honest" down-to-earth INGOs. Now you're cynical about them all and aggressively defend your need to raise a nest egg to plough the way for the family/dog/cottage/brats you're planning. You've done your bit after all. You do this for a while before you realize you sacrificed the very dream you were once working towards.Option 3. You find something suitable in the commercial sector and live happily ever after. (By the way, if you're a logistician, forget it).Option 4. You retrain and change course. You take a massive pay cut. Your skills and experience in aid work go unused. You marry someone named Steve/Janice and drive something practical that "gets good mileage".Option 5. You write your memoirs and someone makes a movie out of it starring Leonardo De Caprio. You become an even more arrogant git, lose all your friends, and make a lot of cash. (This can happen to only one of us by the way).Option 6. Remember the lonely, jaded expat sat at the bar in [substitute 3rd world capital here], letching over young local girls and making snide remarks about your naive ways? Welcome to your future...Suggestions for further career options welcome. Are we the new gypsy? I have visions of huge bands of ex-aid worker families roaming the European countryside in caravans (plastered in no-gun stickers of course), scratching out a life by erecting latrines and taking stock counts..... and maybe seeking charity door-to-door...Is there an aid agency out there that *doesn't* bang on about work/life balance and how it cares for its staff? Is there an aid agency out there that actually has a program for actively rehabilitating serial aid workers back into western life? How could it work? How (if at all) is the situation different for our colleagues from Southern countries? How can we save our dignity, our salaries, our relationships and at the same time stay in the work we love and avoid wasting our skills and experiences....?"Check out this post with all the comments here.

Rumble: As an Aid Worker, Am I Paid Too Much?
    2007-08-23 08:58:00
In the introduction to The Road to the Horizon, you can read how I became a humanitarian aid worker. Pretty much by coincidence (if there is such thing in life), driven by an urge to travel, work with radio (or telecommunications in general) and to work with and for people.Humanitarian work was an excellent opportunity to combine all of those plus-es.. In the beginning, I took the humanitarian aspect as ‘a nice bonus’: while doing the things I loved, I could contribute to the well-being of others. In the beginning, working as a free lancer, for IFRC, I got to do the real stuff: fly out with a kit to remote locations and install stuff, train people, and feel the direct impact of what I did. The communications and IT equipment I installed contributed to a safer environment for them, allowed them to coordinate their work more efficiently, and get the aid moving faster. I was not paid much. Something like USD1,000 per month plus some local expenses, housing and transport.Via a temporary

Oak Ridge Worker Charged With Trying To Sell Nuclear Secrets
    2007-07-20 06:51:56
Today, a worker at Oak Ridge was caught trying to sell nuclear secrets to the highest bidder. Fortunately, it was an undercover agent that busted him for doing so. Apparently, he was in some financial difficulties and was trying to make some money. This is very important to the reason why businesses need to have some form of policy and procedure for monitoring their employees that have access to confidential information.

Worker Variation (Capability) in the Workplace
    2007-04-11 15:32:00
In reading Dr. Deming’s work, The New Economics for Industry, Government, and Education (ORDER IT! http://www.amazon.com/New-Economics-Industry-Government-Education/dp/0262541165 ) for the third time a continuously recurring theme emerges. This should not come as a surprise to you who are familair with his work, as most of Deming’s writing is based on his principle of the system of Profound Knowledge. Deming defines his system of profound knowledge as four, all related parts: Appreciation for a System; Knowledge about Variation; Theory of Knowledge; and Psychology. The aspect of Deming's writings I want to discuss is the theme on the Knowledge about Variation, and how this theoretical principle has actual, practical application in the workplace.Deming's realization that "there will always be, between people, in output, in service, in product "(p.98) a certain level of variation, is very similar to worker capability in the workplace. In this write up I specifically want to discuss
