Max Brooks - World War Z [Libro en Español]
    2008-07-16 09:00:00

Call of Duty 5: World at War starts to surface
    2008-06-10 23:40:45
Call of Duty is one of the biggest names in gaming today, and the hard-fightin' adventures of World War II soldiers just keep coming, ready for twitchy trigger-fingers to blast some baddies. The Wii had a taste of the action with Call of Duty 3, even though it couldn't match the super-fine graphics featured on the other consoles. In development at Treyarch, Call of Duty 5: World at War is coming to all three consoles -- but this time, the Wii gets a bit more TLC. It's being developed by a separate team, although the graphics will be much more comparable between the different versions -- apparently running the COD4 engine on the Wii. That's no slouch, folks, as the COD4 engine was stunning. We can expect vehicle and squad-based additions to the multiplayer, along with ZOMG! a full co-op mode. That's pretty hardcore, because this isn't your church-picnic Call of Duty. Apparently, the setting will be far "grittier" than anything we've seen in the series thus far, which means plenty of grizz

Rare Color Photographs Taken During the Nazi Occupation of Paris During World War II
    2008-06-03 15:16:34
An exhibition of rare color photographs taken of a purportedly cheerful Paris under German occupation during the second World War, has touched a raw nerve among certain politicians and old timers. The Nazis were, as most communist governments today, experts at manipulation and war time propaganda. However, the picture of an old Jewish woman forced to wear the Star of David emblem on her coat by the Germans, is a chilling reminder of the atrocities that were being committed in the Auschwitz death camps. Let no one be fooled, this was just a flimsy facade. World War II: Allied Roleplay in Endgame
    2008-05-30 19:00:40
It has come to my attention that a hotly discussed topic around here is the closing chapters of WWII, and the roles the various participants played in this stage. I have written an article offering a tentative explanation and potential answer to this question, in the hopes that through either agreement or provocation of further [...]

Captain America will be set in World War 2
    2008-05-23 09:39:42
Apparently a big pile of media types got to sit in with Kevin Feige and chatting worked its way around to questions about Marvel Films. Specifically Captain America and his two appearances slated for 2011 films, The First Avenger:Captian America and The Avengers later that summer. IESB.net says:IESB asked Feige if the Captain America film would be a period piece. He confirmed yes, the story will take place during World War II, just like the comic book origin story. He says they plan to remain v

World War II Aerography on Planes
    2008-05-04 00:49:32
I doubt whether aerography on planes was the best way to cheer up troops, but it was definitely something that could distinguish the US air force from the rest. Moreover, it proves that aerography has a long and rich history.

[Wikipedia] January 14: British anti-invasion preparations of World War II
    2008-01-14 01:37:39
British anti-invasion preparations of World War II entailed a large scale programme of military and civilian mobilisation in response to the threat of invasion by German armed forces in 1940 and 1941. The army needed to recover from the defeat of the British Expeditionary Force in France and one and a half million men were enrolled as part-time soldiers in the Home Guard. The rapid construction of field fortifications transformed much of Britain, especially southern England, into a prepared battlefield. Short of heavy weapons and equipment, the British had to make the best use of whatever was available. The German invasion plan, known to English speakers as Operation Sealion, was never taken beyond the preliminary assembly of forces stage. Today, very little remains of Britain's anti-invasion preparations. Only reinforced concrete structures such as pillboxes are common and even these have, until very recently, been unappreciated as historical monuments.Read the rest of this article:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_anti-invasion_preparations_of_World_War_II_______________________________Today's selected anniversaries:1301: The Árpád dynasty, who ruled in Hungary since the late 9th century, ended with the death of King Andrew III. Argentine Pilots Break Silence Over World War Two
    2008-01-07 10:52:00
By David LjunggrenOTTAWA - In early October 1942, Flight Lieutenant Donald McLarty was shot down over Libya on his 199th mission of World War Two. Although he was flying for Britain's Royal Air Force, his uniform was emblazoned with an unexpected word: Argentina. Many foreigners fought for the various Allied air forces, but until now historians have largely focused on pilots from Czechoslovakia, Poland, France and Norway -- all of which were occupied by German forces.Few realize that more than 800 young men from neutral Argentina, some of them schoolboys, rushed to sign up as pilots and then made the long, dangerous trip to Europe by boat. When McLarty climbed into his Hurricane fighter-bomber for a low-level attack on a German base in Libya, he needed to complete just two more missions to earn a long break from active duty. It was not to be."It was a very stupid operation ... the moment we crossed the coast I could see the soldiers waiting," recalled McLarty, now 85."I was hit immediately by ground fire in the engine and had oil all over my windscreen. All I could do was fly in formation with the guy next to me and then my tail was blown off."McLarty's plane smacked into the ground, barrelled straight through two parked German fighters and ended up in a pile of empty gasoline drums.German officers produced a glass of White Horse whisky for the 20-year-old and then shipped him off to a prison camp.McLarty and others were persuaded to speak by Argentine historian Claudio Meunier, who spent a decade unearthing hidden stories of heroism and heartbreak."No one had asked them, no one remembered them. The memories were painful," Meunier told Reuters. Some pilots were native Argentines while the surnames of others reveal they were descended from British professionals who helped develop the country's railways, mines and farms."Other people had fought for the freedoms we'd been living under and so I felt it incumbent on us to do the same thing, as the evil of Hitler was ver

World War III Tank- a prototype!
    2007-10-18 06:09:00
Image by The Unpredictables, originally uploaded here A caterpillar is the larval form of a member of the order Lepidoptera (the insect order comprising butterflies and moths). They are mostly phytophagous in food habit, with some species being entomophagous. Caterpillars are voracious feeders and many of them are considered pests in agriculture. Many moth species are better known in their caterpillar stages because of the damage they cause to fruits and other agricultural produce.Caterpillars have been called "eating machines". They eat leaves voraciously, most species shed their skins four or five times as their bodies grow larger, and they eventually pupate into an adult form. Caterpillars grow very fast; for instance, a tobacco hornworm will increase its weight ten-thousand-fold in less than twenty days. An adaptation that enables them to eat so much is a mechanism in a specialized midgut which transports ions at a very high rate to the lumen (midgut cavity), to keep the potassium level higher in the midgut cavity than in the blood.99% of caterpillars are solely herbivorous. A few, including the clothes moth, feed on detritus. Most predatory caterpillars feed on eggs of other insects, aphids, scale insects, or ant larvae. Some are cannibals, and others prey on caterpillars of other species (e.g. Hawai'ian Eupithecia ). A few are parasitic on cicadas or leaf hoppers. Some Hawai'ian caterpillars (Hyposmocoma molluscivora) use silk traps to capture snails. Many caterpillars are nocturnal. For example, the notorious "cutworms" (of the Noctuidae family) hide at the base of plants during the day and only feed at night. Others, such as gypsy moth (Lymantria dispar) larvae, change their activity patterns depending on density and larval stage, with more diurnal feeding in early instars and high densities.Photographer's message:"Cecropia Moth CaterpillarMy brother found this for me today. I'd never seen this species before and thought that it was worth a picture for the catchy colors and the unique texture."Text courtesy: Wikipedia--

Senate votes to study treatment of Germans during World War II
    2007-06-09 17:14:17
WASHINGTON (AP) — In 1943, 17-year-old Eberhard Fuhr was taken out of his high school classroom in Cincinnati, arrested by FBI agents, and sent off to an internment camp for “enemy aliens” in Texas, where he spent the next 4 1/2 years with his family. Thousands of Germans experienced a similar fate. They were detained in far fewer numbers in this country than Japanese. The stories of the Germans have gotten little attention so far, but the Senate took a step toward changing that this week, voting to look into the treatment of Germans and other Europeans in the U.S. during World War II. The legislation’s status is uncertain because it was passed as an amendment to the immigration bill, which stalled in the Senate this week. Still, just getting a vote on the issue was an accomplishment for Sen. Russ Feingold, D-Wis., who represents a large German population. For the last six years, a hold placed by an anonymous Republican senator had kept it from coming up for a vote

First World War at the Gallery of Modern Art Edinburgh
    2007-05-17 11:02:07
Edinburgh’s modern art collection is housed in two adjacent buildings, the Dean Gallery and the National Gallery of Modern Art, to the west of the city centre in Dean. The Dean Gallery I paid a brief visit to the Gallery of Modern Art this week. I know it’s not always possible but I much prefer short visits to galleries and museums where you focus on a specific topic or artist. If I try to spend hours during a visit, I just feel that I can’t take it all in. I looked at the black and white works depicting the Fist World War. The were two pieces which made the biggest impression on me. The Card Players by Otto Dix which portrays 3 war veterans injured during action, one is playing with his mouth, another with his foot.  The other was “Death Marches” by Percy Smith, one of seven in the Dance of Death series of etchings from 1919. It shows the eager new infantry recruits marching four abreast with the ghostly figure of Death surveying its fresh batch of v
