    Yankees Blank Frustrated Rangers. 3-0
    2008-08-08 02:31:29
There’s really no way to put into words just how much it hurt to watch a Texas Rangers starting pitcher toss a near-gem like the one sinkerballer Scott Feldman provided on Thursday evening (7 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 4 K) and yet shoulder the loss. There is, however, a word to describe the [...]...

From SI.com:A Boston Red Sox fan sued the New York Yankees and two of its fans Tuesday, alleging he was attacked at Yankee Stadium last summer. In a suit filed in Manhattan federal court, Charles Hillios said he was harassed by two Yankees fans who objected to him cheering for the Red Sox last Aug. 29.The Massachusetts resident said in the suit that security warned the Yankees fans to leave him alone. What the hell is up with Yankees pitchers in Texas?

How It Works: Running The Yankees
    2008-08-04 18:28:00
Arianne Cohen/NYMag.com:How It Works: Yankees management plays two games. The first is the day-to-day running of the team. Fifty-one thousand fans pay an average of $28 to come to 81 home games, where they suck down sodas and hot dogs for $4.50 each, generating half the team’s sales. The other half comes from $140 million in ad deals and media rights. The largest expense is player costs, which run about $200 million a year, and then there’s league revenue sharing and the costs of flying the team around the country. But eking out a marginal profit on operations is hardly the aim. The bigger game they’re playing is maximizing the value of the team itself. No need to worry about last year’s $28 million loss, when its value rose $200 million, to $1.2 billion. “Like a piece of property in New York City, it’s really not an annual profit-and-loss-based business,” says Joseph Perello, former vice-president of business development. The Yankees—read Steinbrenner—also own more t...

Yankees - AngelsYankee Stadium(4 games)After a disappointing series with the Orioles that saw the Yankees drop two of three the Yankees welcome the Angels into town. The Angels are the best team in baseball, they can pitch, they can play defense, they can run the bases, and now with the addition of Mark Teixeira they can really hit too. And luckily for the Yanks, they get to play them ten times in the next two months, starting off with this weekend's four game series. The Angels are 10 - 2 since ...

BREAKING NEWS: Yankees Acquire Pudge Rodriguez
    2008-07-30 15:31:00
Well...the more I think about it the more I realize this was a great acquisition for the Yankees. We finally get to relieve ourselves of the virtual heart attacks that we got every time Farnsie took the ball in a close game, and Molina will finally get some time off.Pudge is batting .290 right now, about equal to what Jorge has batted for his career. Pudge is also a 13-time Gold Glove winner who can throw runners out with ease.Farnsworth has been good of late and seemed to have found a groove, but he has a long history of being inconsistent in New York. With a pretty solid bullpen consisting of Dan Giese, David Robertson, Jose Veras, Edwar Ramierz, Damaso Marte and Mariano Rivera, a near rehabbed Brian Bruney, and studs like Mark Melancon waiting in the wings, and all of a sudden Kyle Farnsworth looks pretty dispensible.Pudge is a good pickup for the Yankees and a platoon of Pudge/Molina makes the Yankees as solid as almost any team behind the plate.Buster Olney/ESPN.Com:The Yankees ...

Yankees Should Look Very Closely At Gregg Zaun
    2008-07-30 14:24:00
UPDATE 7:00pm: Well Zaun would have been a good pick up if they didn't get anyone but Pudge but that's exactly what they did. Oh well!!!Gregg Zaun could be the perfect platoon mate for Jose Molina for the stretch run. With Jorge completing surgery on his ailing shoulder today, a veteran switch hitting catcher with a better bat and OBS than Moeller could be a great pickup for the Yankees.Toronto GM J.P. Ricciardi has made it very clear that if anyone wants Zaun they would be more than willing to move him and I really don't think that he would ask for the moon.If the Yankees are looking for a decent catcher they can snatch up without having to mortage the farm, Gregg Zaun seems like a pretty good match. Cathal Kelly/TheStar.Com:Gregg Zaun became the first Blue Jay to openly express interest in leaving the club yesterday when he told mlb.com it would "probably be a good thing" if he were traded to a contender. After beginning the season as the team's frontline catcher, Zaun has recently ...

MORE LESTER MAGIC, With A Little Help From His Friends...Red Sox 9 Yankees 2
    2008-07-28 04:20:00
Sunday night at Fenway Park, the Yankees and the Red Sox resumed their love affair in game three of this late July series. And for one night, it was ALL Boston, as Jon Lester won his sixth game in a row. Convincingly. Johnny Damon had this to say about the Red Sox ace lefthander..."That's two games now he's been in complete control of us," said Johnny Damon, who was 2-for-4. "He's showing that he's one of the best pitchers around."Great words, Mr. Damon. And you're right...he IS one of the best pitchers in all of baseball. Last night he went seven strong innings, giving up two runs on nine hits, walking just one and striking out a whopping eight pinstriped batters. He was simply tremendous and earned his ninth victory. Having him on the mound every fifth day makes the almost trade for Johan Santana seem like pure folly, a bad dream, a nightmare that thankfully never happened. The game was almost overshadowed by the soap opera called Manny being Manny, but when push came to shove, as it...

PUNCHLESS And 'PENLESS Boston Red Sox Humbled By NY Yankees 10-3
    2008-07-27 04:03:00
This one became really ugly really fast. Saturday afternoon's Fenway Park game between the Boston Red Sox and the NY Yankees started out well enough with Boston having Yankee starter Andy Pettitte on the ropes. They scored two runs that first frame, but except for a meaningless run in the sixth inning, that would be it for the home club. They finished with a total of six hits, and six hits will not win many games the rest of the year. The final score was 10-3 Pinstripes, as Tim Wakefield, with a little help (the wrong kind of help) from his bullpen, gave up 6 runs in just 5 1/3 innings, allowing 8 hits while striking out 3 and walking 4. The help from the bullpen came in the sixth inning. Justin Masterson faced 3 batters and gave up base hits to each one of 'em. By then, of course, the game was essentially over. Face it, Peter (that's me), it WAS over! Javy Lopez followed Masterson and pitched well, one of two pitchers from the 'pen who did. He was followed by Craig Hansen, who is more...

Manny-less Red Sox Bow Meekly To The Yankees...NY 1 Boston 0
    2008-07-26 04:16:00
Manny Ramirez was a last minute scrub, SO last minute that the original lineup, featuring Big Papi David Ortiz in the three spot and Manny batting fourth, had already been officially posted. Needless to say, the teams owners, manager Tito Francona and GM Theo Epstein held a closed door meeting to discuss...discuss......well, I don't know. But with the trading deadline looming, ANYTHING is possible. It's always something with Manny, but this was a game he NEVER should have missed. The lineup was supposed to return to a semblance of normalty, but noooo. MRIs of BOTH knees, just in case Manny had forgotten which one was causing him so much discomfort, were completely normal. Some players think his move was the most unprofessional thing they had ever seen. I agree 100%. How could he decide to take a night off when the team, HIS team, was playing the Yankees, the red hot New York Yankees who, with the win, closed to within two games of Boston? I DO NOT KNOW THE ANSWER, but the club should ...

Yankees Steal Xavier Nady, Damaso Marte From Pirates
    2008-07-26 00:03:00
First off, I really like this trade. I think the Yankees got two very good players to boost a club that has already shown that they have what it takes to get the job done this year. This trade makes the Yankees serious AL East contenders. And if for some reason they can't swing the East, they are the front runners in my book to win the wild card.I will have more on this trade soon, so stay in touchBryan Hoch/MLB.Com:The Yankees moved on Friday to upgrade their club for a push at the postseason, acquiring outfielder Xavier Nady and left-handed reliever Damaso Marte from the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for four Minor Leaguers. The Yankees will part with talented right-field prospect Jose Tabata, plus three pitchers -- right-handers Ross Ohlendorf and George Kontos, plus left-hander Phil Coke. The deal has not been officially announced, pending the completion of physicals and the exchange of medical paperwork. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman and manager Joe Girardi said th...

Yankees - Red Sox Series Preview
    2008-07-25 07:00:00
Yankees - Red SoxFenway Park(3 games)Heading into the last series between these two teams there was a lot of talk about how the games weren't as important, and would lack the intensity they had in the past. The Yanks were 7.5 behind, and the real division race was Boston and Tampa, and I guess at the time it was true. (Or maybe writers needed some nonsense to write an article about.)But this time around things are a lot tighter; Boston is now tied with Tampa for first place in the AL East with a...

New York Yankees At Boston Red Sox...Games 10, 11, 12...***THE RETURN OF BIG PAPI***
    2008-07-25 04:46:00
Fenway Park will be in a festive and slightly combative mood Friday night as the Yankees, who are only three games in back of Boston and Tampa Bay, invade the old ballpark that is the home of the world champion Boston Red Sox. And the Red Sox will have a familiar bat in the lineup for the first time in what seems like ages. His name is David Ortiz, but we know him better as Big Papi. OUR Big Papi. What an ovation he'll get when he strides to the plate in the bottom of the first inning. In fact, I'll be standing too, hands banging together with a huge smile on my face! His teammate, JD Drew, had this to say about Big Papi's return...“It’s like getting a huge trade at the deadline,” Drew said. “It’s David Ortiz. You’re not going to take that for granted for sure.”“We’re in a fighting position without one of the two biggest pieces of the lineup,” he said. The timing couldn't be any better for a big bat and a huge personality to return for the rest of the season and (hop...

Peter Catapano/Newsday.Com:Be it on the field, page one of the tabloids, or a jail cell, New York has had a long line of baseball stars who can't seem to stay out of trouble or the headlines. The reigning king of the gossip pages is Alex Rodriguez, who's mired in a nasty divorce. BONDS Going To Yankees? Or Is This Just A Sham? I'll Ask You To Be The Judge Of That...
    2008-07-18 06:44:00
From MLB News Dot Com. Is this just a joke to gain readership? Or will Bobby Bonds, the legally tangled slugger, patrol Yankee Stadium's spacious leftfield? YOU decide. Here you go..."Embattled former Giants slugger Barry Bonds has entered into formal contract negotiations with the Yankees, and a consummation of the deal is anticipated forthwith, a confidential clubhouse source told MLBNewsOnline.com.The incentive-laden deal, being hammered out between Bonds' agent Jeff Borris and general manager Brian Cashman, will well exceed the major league $200,000 minimum but has a number of protective clauses to isolate the Yankees' exposure to the possibility of Bonds missing time due to legal distractions or recurring injury, the source said. (And until he reports that Barry Bonds is climbing the Empire State Building and the Navy is dispatching biplanes, I'm sticking with my source.)Cashman was reported to have arrived at the decision to sign Bonds during the All-Star break when he determined...

    Yankees Ink Sexson
    2008-07-17 17:45:00
Buster Olney/ESPN.Com:The New York Yankees have reached a tentative agreement with Richie Sexson, who was released by the Seattle Mariners a week ago.Sexson fits in New York because the Yankees needed a right-handed slugger to match up against left-handed pitching -- and Sexson had a .344 average with five home runs in 71 at-bats against lefties this year.Assuming the deal is completed, he'll be in the lineup Saturday against Oakland. The Yankees will have to pay Sexson only the prorated minimum of $390,000 from his $14 million salary with the Mariners. Seattle is eating the remainder of the nearly $6 million Sexson is owed for the season.Sexson was batting .218 with just 30 RBIs in 74 games when the Mariners cut him loose, on July 10. He hit a career-worst .205 with 21 homers and 100 strikeouts in 2007.A native of Brush Prairie, Wash., the 6-foot-8 Sexson became a frequent target of boobirds in Seattle over the past two years.Sexson has hit 30 or more homers six times, and also has six...

Levine, Trost: The Yankees Will Lose Money In 2008
    2008-07-16 18:29:00
Darren Rovell/CNBC.com:Darren Rovell interviewed New York Yankees president Randy Levine and chief operating officer Lonn Trost. Despite the fact that the Yankees are the first team to draw four million fans for four consecutive seasons, Levine said they will still lose money this year. Here is the interview...Darren: At $1.3 billion, the New Yankee Stadium is the most expensive stadium ever built in the United States. The price of steel has almost doubled in the last year. How does that affect that estimate? Levine: It hasn't changed, Darren. The stadium is being built on budget and on time. It's been a tremendous effort by a lot of people. Every day, you walk it, you see it growing and you see it being the phenomenal replica of the 1923 stadium. Darren: So those (steel) prices are locked in then? Levine: Yes. Everything is locked in. Darren: The big news in the financial world today is Anheuser-Busch getting acquired by InBev. This one was special for a number of reasons.--First and foremost (and most obvious), it came against the Yankees. Although Pittsburgh was not buzzing with all the hype we saw in late June, the park was still packed, and the crowd was much more involved in the game than usual. The fact that this win gives the Pirates a series victory over New York is not only impressive, but meaningful to the team and fans. A Series Split..The Hard Way...Yankees 5 Red Sox 4
    2008-07-07 04:27:00
First of all, congratulations to the seven Boston Red Sox players who are going to the All Star Game...great job, guys. But last night, the New York Yankees salvaged a series split with Boston, winning the 10 inning game 5-4. Brett Gardner, who is now the starting leftfielder for New York until Johnny Damon returns, singled up the middle against Jonathon Papelbon to plate the winning run, and he went down and hit a darn good "put-away" splitter to do it. With the Tampa Bay (Devil) Rays' seventh straight victory, Boston, who was one up on the Rays after their last home game, are now five games behind them. And that's tough.Tim Wakefield again did not pitch poorly, going 6 2/3 innings and giving up 3 runs on 4 hits with only one base on balls. But the aforementioned bullpen gave the Yankees another run back in that seventh inning to tie it before the fateful 10th inning. Joba Chamberlin started for the Yankees and pitched six full, allowing three runs while mixing in 4 walks. We should h...

The Boston Red Sox ALMOST completed a ninth inning comeback against Mariano Rivera. They sure had their chances. They had scored one run to make the score 2-1 and had the bases loaded with no (zero, none, nada) outs. The bases were full. Here's what transpired. The score was 2-0 Yankees and JD Drew led off this final inning with a single, his second hit of the game. Manny followed and was hit by a pitch, the sixth but not the last time a batter was plunked in this late afternoon contest. Mike Lowell singled to right, driving in the first Sox run. 2-1 Bad Guys. Still no outs. Kevin Youkilis was then hit by a pitch. That would be number seven and the last hit batsman of this soon-to-be-over game. Still 2-1 and Mo beared down. In short order, Coco Crisp struck out, Jason Varitek, who usually wears Rivera out, popped out and Julio Lugo, Boston's last hope, struck out. A golden opportunity to drive a stake through the heart of their hated rivals was wasted, and the game was over. Here's wha...

Red Sox Sock Yankees Again...Boston 6 Yankees 4
    2008-07-05 04:20:00
Friday afternoon, July 4th of 2008 was quite the day for Red Sox players and fans alike in New York City as Boston soundly defeated the downtrodden home team who go by the name "Yankees" by a score of 6-4. Darrell Rasner was absolutely no match for Sox ace Josh Beckett, and it showed. Josh was able to go six complete innings, throwing slightly more than 100 pitches, as he overcame a shaky first frame and got tougher and tougher as the game rolled by. The bullpen took over in the 7th, and Hideki Okajima strode to the mound, Phiton titanium necklace firmly in place. Once again it was not a good outing for him. He DID record two outs, but also walked two and surrendered a base hit. So Manny Delcarmen was called on to extinguish the smoldering fire that is the Yankee offense. And he did just that before running into minor trouble in the eighth. One pinstriper was on and there was one out. Tito Francona needed a lefthander to pitch to the lefty batter, so out came Javy Lopez. Obviously it w...

Josh Beckett gutted out a tough three run first inning and held firm, allowing the bullpen to pitch the last three innings. A Mikey Lowell 3 run home run was the decisive clout. SOX WIN AGAIN! A full wrap in the morning. Happy Independence Day!...

Boston Red Sox 7 NY Yankees 0...HAPPY 4th Of July To All!
    2008-07-04 04:07:00
The Boston Red Sox soundly defeated the reeling New York Yankees Thursday night at the Stadium by a score of 7-0. Jon Lester was superb with every aspect of his pitching and spun his second complete game, his first since his no hitter. Manager Terry "Tito" Francona had this to say..."He used his two-seamer, his cutter, his four-seamer, got a lot of first-pitch strikes, got some double plays," Red Sox manager Terry Francona said. "He really looked like a 6-foot-5 major league left-hander."And here is his wonderful pitching line... IP H R ER BB K HR Season ERA J. Lester (W, 7-3) 9.0 5 0 0 2 8 0 3.21 JD Drew, Yankee "fan favorite" Kevin Youkilis and Coco Crisp, back from his 5 game suspension, had 2 hit games and Jacoby Ellsbury had 2 RBIs. With 11 hits, they were able to score six runs more than they needed, but I like 7. It's a nice crooked number. The loss prompted Yankee manager Joe Girardi to call a post-game team meeting, and after a contentious war of words...

Mets-Yankees? It's Just Not Special Anymore
    2008-06-28 21:52:00
Today I went to my first Mets-Yankees game in 34 years, and the first one ever that's ever meant anything in the standings. I went to the Mayor's Trophy Game back in 1974, when the Mets and Yankees would play a meaningless exhibition game in midseason and it was eventually discontinued many years back. (My only memory of that game was some stiff on the Yankees named Celerino Sanchez hit a grand slam that won the game for the Yankees that night. I couldn't tell you what the score was if my life depended on it.)I wore a special t-shirt for the game, my "got rings lately?" shirt I got from the BLOHARDS earlier this year. That's the one they made up in response to those obnoxious "got rings?" shirts that those brilliant Yankee fans came up with after the Red Sox won the 2004 World Series. (I saw a couple of Yankee fans wearing those antiquated "got rings?' shirts. I could only think to myself: "You're wearing the wrong 'rings' shirts, guys!")When I came off the subway at Shea I saw a guy t...

VIA STEPHEN RUIZ FROM THE ORLANDO SENTINAL :Lake Mary right-hander Matt Richardson, Central Florida's top draft pick among high school players in this year's amateur draft earlier this month, will forgo a scholarship to UCF to play professional baseball. He signed with the New York Yankees, who drafted him in the 15th round, with the 470th overall pick.Once the paperwork on his contract is complete, he will join the Yankees' Gulf Coast League rookie-level affiliate in Tampa."It's awesome,'' Richardson told the Sentinel by phone from Tampa. "I came down here on a Friday. We have Sundays off, so I could go home.''Lake Mary Coach Allen Tuttle said Richardson hadn't pitched extensively on the high school level until this past season, when he was 4-3 with a 2.90 ERA. Monday, Monday...An Off Day For The Red Sox After A Clutch Win Against Seattle... Boston 2 Mariners 1...And A Yankees' Loss
    2008-06-09 04:19:00
Looking back on Sunday afternoon at emerald-green Fenway Park, I smile. Justin Masterson, who yesterday became the FIRST PITCHER in the history of the 96 year old park to go unbeaten in his first four appearances, was great. Way to go, Justin! After losing "the feel" for his pitches in the second inning when he walked the first two men, he was saved by an over the shoulder catch in right by co-player of the game JD Drew. He settled down completely after that second frame and pitched six full innings, giving up only one run on three lonely hits. He also walked three and struck out four Seattle batters. All in all, a great history-making performance by the talented Masterson...we'll see more of him and his somewhat quirky delivery often. Here's what manager Tito Francona had to say after the game...“I hope the story continues - we’re still fairly early into the season and I imagine every time he picks up the ball the organization’s got their chest out a little, as they should,” ...

Giambi Gives Yankees Best Win Of The Season

Well. Maybe I was really wrong about Jason Giambi. He just smashed a no doubter into the upper deck to give the Yankees a fantastic walk off win 9-8. The Yanks clawed back from a five run deficit to pull off the win so that is always encouraging.Jorge did not reinjure his shoulder (at least I don't think) so that is huge as well. Farnsworth was Farnsworth and gave up a run, but a huge credit to Jose Veras for working his way out of a tough jam in the 8th. ...

Hillary, OJ Prosecutors & the 2004 Yankees
    2008-06-05 10:17:00
Hillary Clinton (pictured wearing the hat of her "favorite" MLB team) is expected to announce on Saturday that she is giving up her Democratic presidential ambition and will support expected nominee Barack Obama. (Not a surprise she is waiting until Saturday, as today is the 40th anniversary of the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy.)I would bet that she will NOT be Obama's choice to be his vice presidential running mate, as the Obamas don't want the baggage that comes with her (aka Bill), and she doesn't want to be vice president anyway. (Obama needs a running mate who appeals to the two most important groups he still needs to win over from John McCain: Independents and Conservative Democrats. That's not Hillary.) I would bet in the long run she's hoping that Obama loses in November so she could run again in 2012.But I digress. With Hillary Clinton not becoming president next year, she joins the O.J. Simpson prosecution team (remember Marcia Clark and Chris Darden?) and the 2004 New Y...

Mets Massacre Yankees Despite Horrific Umpiring
    2008-05-19 10:27:00
The Mets tap danced all over the Yankees in The Bronx last night, 11-2, despite an unbelievably idiotic call by the umps that actually reversed a Carlos Delgado home run that hit the left field foul pole and ultimately cost the Mets two runs. Mike Reilly called it a home run, but the other three idiots in blue made him change his call, despite the fact Reilly had the best angle to it. I've always liked the fact that umps get together to get a call right, but this one actually reversed a right call for a bad one. (Bob Davidson, home plate ump, to his credit, actually admitted his screwup after the game.) But the Mets showed real determination and went out and stomped all over the Evil Empire anyway, and swept the two-game series.I have never been a fan of instant replay for baseball, but more and more I am starting to believe that having it for calls like home runs around the foul pole and fan interference might actually be the way to go. If more calls like this are blown, you might see...

Subway Series Delivers Embarrasment To Girardi, Yankees
    2008-05-19 09:45:00
Filip Bondy/New York Daily News:During the ninth inning Sunday night at Yankee Stadium, the lame-duck cathedral sounded as if there were only Met fans left in the Bronx. The visitors were up by nine, on the way to an 11-2 clobbering. The fans with the curlicue N-Y's on their caps stood and cheered, alone, triumphant. It was hard to imagine a more humiliating moment for the Yanks and their new manager, Joe Girardi. Their two best starters were knocked around like bums for two days by cross-city rivals, who had scored a total of 18 runs in 18 innings - not counting a three-run homer by Carlos Delgado, incorrectly ruled foul by overzealous, overruling umpires. This is how bad it was: If Joe Torre were still managing here, then he probably wouldn't be managing here anymore. Funny how a wet, one-sided weekend can change everything. Willie Randolph entered the borough on Friday reeling and rationalizing. He was supposedly losing control of his clubhouse. Two games later, the Mets are one g...

Óliver Pérez vence a los Yankees
    2008-05-19 08:32:58

    Yankees Lose 11-2, Embarassed Again
    2008-05-18 23:27:00
Anthony McCarron/New York Daily News:It was never supposed to be this way in the final Subway Series at Yankee Stadium - Met fans hanging around the old park at the end of the abbreviated two-game set watching their team rout the hosts, making more noise than the Yankee faithful. But this is quickly turning into a dreary Yankee season, one in which a team that once made a dynasty of taking advantage of breaks couldn't make a spark out of an overturned Met home run in the fourth inning. A reversal of a three-run homer for Carlos Delgado - and what would have been a six-run Met lead - should have given the Yankees hope, yet it was reduced to trivia in a humiliating 11-2 loss. The Mets were the team in disarray when the series started, with infighting in their clubhouse and questions about Willie Randolph's job security. But they looked like a different team while sweeping the rain-shortened two-game series. The last-place Yankees looked punchless, like they have for most of the season, r...

Mets Whip The Mop, and the Yankees
    2008-05-18 00:09:00
The underachieving Mets whacked the even more underachieving Yankees in The Bronx on Saturday afternoon, a 7-4 come-from-behind win for the Boys from Queens. And the Yankee villain was one Kyle (Mop Up Man) Farnsworth, who gave up two home runs in the seventh to Jose Reyes and David Wright to seal the Mets victory before a sold out crowd. In the immortal words of Robert De Niro in Casino: "I wouldn't give the bum a mop job." Farnsworth continues to prove why he's one of the worst and most overpaid relievers in baseball. (And I bet most Yankee fans wouldn't mind seeing Farnsworth with a real mop in his hands, anywhere but Yankee Stadium.)The Mets and Yankees were rained out of Friday night's game, but instead of doing the logical thing and playing a doubleheader on Saturday or Sunday, they will play one of those cutesy-pie doubleheaders where one game is played in the Bronx and the other is played later that day in Queens, when both teams meet again at Shea later next month. (So, as Denn...

As Subway Series arrives, both Yankees and Mets limp in
    2008-05-16 11:21:00
The headline tells it all — the Mets and Yankees are both limping into this first round of the annual Subway Series. I found these Mets and Yanks logos online, and they definitely tell a great story. Will either team really care enough to win tonight or throughout the weekend? We will soon find out......

Remember When The Yankees Got Off To A Slow Start?
    2008-05-12 11:31:00
The Yankees are notorious for their slow starts...case in point below (sorry for the long post but I think it is stuff everyone should read):1995: Bombers get off to a 10-5 start. Everyone starts thinking, "Hey, the good times are back for good." They're still OK on May 21 at 12-9, but then the crapper falls off the caboose: They lose 10 of 11. Now they're 13-19, so it's time to drink the Drano, right? Not yet -- the real low point hits at 20-29. Let's all start thinking about football camps, right? No, they make the playoffs. A precedent-setting season, my friend.1996: So much for the new dynasty, huh? The Twins take 'em down 7-1 on April 19 and drop them under .500 -- probably for good at 6-7. They're already four games behind the Orioles, and you can't even smell May Day yet. How long ago was this? How about Jeter batting ninth and Mariano Rivera as a set-up dude? Doesn't matter. Same stuff, different decade.1997: Two weeks into the season, and the Yanks are 5-10. They're already si...

The Yankees Need The Captain's Bat
    2008-05-10 12:09:00
Wallace Matthews/Newsday.com:Derek Jeter had a poor night Friday, going 0-for-4 with two strikeouts. The second came in the eighth inning on a check swing that had the normally stoic Jeter jawing briefly with plate umpire Brian Gorman."It's frustrating whenever you lose," Jeter said, although in his case the frustration may run deeper than that. Counting last night, Jeter has now gone 120 at-bats this season without a home run, the second-longest homerless drought of his career, not counting the 2003 season when he was knocked out on Opening Night with a separated shoulder. That leaves him just six at-bats short of the only slower start of his career, in 2001, when it took him 126 at-bats to hit his first homer. He finished that season with 21, the second-highest total of his career, but that was a 27-year-old Jeter, not the 33-year-old whose power numbers have dwindled over the past three seasons."I realized a long time ago that I wasn't going to catch Babe Ruth," Jeter said. "So it do...

Yankees Could Recall Kennedy For Wednesday
    2008-05-09 23:11:00
Ed Price/NJ.Com:I just checked, and as far as I can tell, Ian Kennedy could be called back up to start Wednesday at Tampa Bay instead of Kei Igawa. Before tonight's game, manager Joe Girardi said "there's no situation we've talked (about) as of right now" that would keep the Yankees from starting Igawa again Wednesday at Tampa Bay. But that was before tonight's awful performance. Baseball rules require an optioned player, such as Kennedy, to spend 10 days in the minors before returning (unless he replaces a player put on the disabled list). Kennedy was optioned last Sunday, so the 10th day is Tuesday. From what I am told, the 10-day count begins the day of the assignment, not the day the player physically reports to the minor-league team (last Monday, in Kennedy's case). The bottom line: If the Yankees don't want to give Igawa another turn, they can use Kennedy on Wednesday. It would take some sort of creative scheduling, since Kennedy pitched Tuesday and is scheduled to go again Sunda...

It's been a year, give or take, since Roger Clemens returned to the New York Yankees, and since Suzyn Waldman made her dramatic announcement. Thanks to the glories of Youtube, we can relive that great moment. Enjoy it, folks....

    Yankees vs. Indians Series Preview
    2008-05-05 19:58:00
Yankees - Indians @ Yankee Stadium(3 games)After splitting a four game series at Progressive Field a little over a week ago the Yankees and Indians face off again for a 3 game series at The Stadium. This will also be the final time these two teams will play each other this season unless they meet in October again.Since taking the first two from the Yanks in that series the Indians have lost 5 of 7 and currently sit in fourth place in the Central Division with a record of 14-17, 2.5 games behind ...

    Yankees vs. Tigers Series Preview
    2008-04-29 10:03:00
Yankees - Tigers@ Yankee Stadium(3 games) The Yankees come home to face the Detroit Tigers for the first time this season. Last year the teams split the 8 game season series.Detroit comes into Yankee Stadium as one of the bigger disappointments of the early season with an 11-15 record, they look to be coming out of their early season struggles as they've won 5 of their last 7.The Yankees are coming off a 10 game road trip where they were 5-5. The lineup still has not found itself, but their pitc...

Can the Yankees survive without Jorge Posada?
    2008-04-28 10:33:00
The Yankees will be without their catcher for at least two weeks, but as many of you know a trip to Dr. Andrews usually leads to surgery, so two weeks could turn into to two month, or even longer. But as Mark Fiensand points out on his blog today the Yankees have a very deep lineup. One that should be able to still score runs without Posada's bat. Jose Molina is also a decent hitter, nowhere close to Posada, but decent. And defensively he's clearly better than Posada and he also calls a great ga...

Yankees @ White Sox Series Preview
    2008-04-22 09:38:00
Yankees - White Sox @ US Cellular Field(3 games)The White Sox have been one of the major surprises of the young season. They've been getting outstanding pitching (2nd in the AL with a team ERA of 3.45) and are currently leading the AL Central with an 11-7 record. The Yanks come into this series after dropping two out of three to the Baltimore Orioles in Baltimore, and sitting at a mediocre 10-10. All three Yankees pitchers are trying to bounce back from previous rough outings; Chien-Ming Wang an...

Yankees-Mets-Others Join Forces To Help First Responder's Family
    2008-04-21 13:09:00
Ned Thompson was a first responder for the New York Police Department on Sept. 11, 2001. He worked the bucket brigade for weeks at Ground Zero. Despite being a non-smoker, Ned died on March 9 at age 39 of lung cancer, almost certainly caused by his selfless work near the fallen towers. He was survived by a wife and four daughters, all eight years old or younger.I am telling you this because there is a fundraiser a week from tonight, April 28, for Ned Thompson. It is at the Gallway Hooker restaurant at 7 E. 36th Street in Manhattan between 6-10 p.m.Baseball New York is strongly supporting this effort. Brian Cashman had sent Ned a signed baseball and a letter in the weeks before his passing that was said to bring him great happiness in his final days, and the Yankees are sending memorabilia to be auctioned off. The Mets donated an autographed Tom Seaver baseball. And Bobby Valentine, who was so involved in the post-tragedy efforts, sent autograph items from Japan that included a 2000 Worl...

Yankees/Red Sux Fans And The Flying Dragon Puncher
    2008-04-21 11:59:00
I debated for about an hour on whether or not to post this video. But in the end I thought it was a little too insane not too.It kinda pisses me off to see Yankee fans get tossed over a railing in our own stadium but from watching this video (and thats pretty much all I have to go on) it looks like they got what they deserved. If someone was there or knows more about how the fight started please comment below. This could have easily ended up really, really bad. Thank God it didn't.(courtesy DeadSpin) ...
