Fitness Fusion: Yoga and Pilates Address Mind and Body Needs
    2008-05-01 00:41:00
Yoga and Pilates are two of the most prominent mind/body exercises around, but what sets them apart? You do them on the floor, they are often seen together in the holistic "mind-body" section of the exercise world, and both promise to be a mental and physical panacea. But, despite these similarities, yoga and Pilates spring from different schools of thought. Yoga and Pilates: Defining Differences and Similarities "Yoga was developed thousands of years ago and is based in spiritual practice of union, Eliza D. Morgan, YMCA fitness trainer and certified Pilates instructor said. "Pilates was developed within the last 100 years, more or less, by an individual named Joseph Pilates who invented machines and developed mat exercises that rehabilitate the body through mind/body coordination." Pilates is mostly body oriented, and a session typically includes a short series of exercise sets with some mind-body focus, while yoga incorporates deep breathing and longer sets of exercises and intense

Do You Know The Different Types Of Yoga ?
    2008-04-29 00:39:00
The ancient practice of yoga is not merely about stretching and flexibility. It is a philosophical movement that seeks to free the body of toxins, create a space for God, unite the mind and body, and bring a deep sense of peace and relaxation into your life. Some styles focus on the fitness aspect, while others combine the meditative side as well, so one should consider the various styles before beginning. For beginners, Hatha yoga is slow-paced and gentle. It is believed that one cannot control the mind until the body is adequately prepared to receive spiritual guidance. By a series of postures, stretches, breathing and relaxation techniques, one can find focus, concentration and a sense of inner peace. This yoga is good for increasing flexibility and toning muscles. Iyengar yoga focuses on aligning the body to provide maximum results and minimal injury, making it another smart choice for beginners, including ill or elderly participants. Contrary to "flow" styles of yoga, Iyengar u

Back Pain Causes, Diagnosis and Yoga Tips
    2008-04-06 00:25:00
If you've ever groaned, "Oh, my aching back!", you are not alone. Back pain is one of the most common medical problems, affecting 8 out of 10 people at some point during their lives. Back pain can range from a dull, constant ache to a sudden, sharp pain. Acute back pain comes on suddenly and usually lasts from a few days to a few weeks. Back pain is called chronic if it lasts for more than three months. Most back pain goes away on its own, though it may take awhile. Taking over-the-counter pain relievers and resting can help. However, staying in bed for more than 1 or 2 days can make it worse. Acute or short-term low back pain generally lasts from a few days to a few weeks. Most acute back pain is the result of trauma to the lower back or a disorder such as arthritis. Pain from trauma may be caused by a sports injury, work around the house or in the garden, or a sudden jolt such as a car accident or other stress on spinal bones and tissues. Symptoms may range from muscle ache to shoot

Some types of yoga also involve meditation and chanting. There are several styles of yoga, many of these have specific characteristics which reflect a particular teacher's approach to asanas; others reflect the characteristics or teachings of a particular organization. Like individuals, styles or schools of yoga have their own personalities and approaches to practicing asanas. What distinguishes the different styles is what is emphasized, be it posture, breath, aerobics, dance, slow and rhythmic movements, philosophy or a combination of many factors. 2008-03-31 00:18:00
Yoga as we all know it is aimed to unite the mind, the body, and the spirit. Yogis view that the mind and the body are one and that if it is given the right tools and taken to the right environment, it can find harmony and heal itself. Yoga therefore is considered therapeutic. It helps you become more aware of your body's posture, alignment and patterns of movement. It makes the body more flexible and helps you relax even in the midst of a stress stricken environment. This is one of the foremost reasons why people want to start Practicing yoga - to feel fitter, be more energetic, be happier and peaceful. Classical yoga as defined by Patanjali is an eight stages process of spiritual development Ashtanga (eight step) yoga. The first two stages are ethical disciplines (Yamas and Nyamas). Then come postures (Asanas in Sanskrit) and breathing exercises (Pranayama). The last four limbs are meditative stages: control of the sense (Prathyara), concentration (Dharana), meditation (Dhyana) and

Yoga - Improves Your Mental and Physical Health
    2008-03-31 00:17:00
The whole system of Yoga is built on three main structures: exercise, breathing, and meditation. The exercises of Yoga are designed to put pressure on the glandular systems of the body, thereby increasing its efficiency and total health. The body is looked upon as the primary instrument that enables us to work and evolve in the world, and so a Yoga student treats it with great care and respect. Breathing techniques are based on the concept that breath is the source of life in the body. The Yoga student gently increases breath control to improve the health and function of both body and mind. Just as your body temperature increases to fight infection, the increased room temperature will help improve T-cell function and the right functioning of the immune system. The most important plus points, perhaps, are the mental health benefits. You will enjoy more willpower through restraint, self-discipline, focus and willpower. Besides, the effects on the stress in one's life and how one manages

The Yoga Way to Health and Well Being
    2008-03-31 00:16:00
Yoga is not a recent practice. It is a practice which through time, has developed and increased in significance and appeal worldwide. The rationale behind the appeal is greatly to do with the physical and psychological benefits experienced when integrating yoga into one's daily schedule. Yoga can be viewed as a breath of fresh air in this fast paced lifestyle that we live in. The word yoga comes from the Sanskrit language and means “to integrate”. Yoga promotes a harmonious working together of the body's components leading to both physical and mental training. Despite the fact that there are numerous forms of yoga; Hatha Yoga is still presently seen as one of the more commonly practiced yoga styles. Hatha Yoga consists of non strenuous physical exercise which aids in strengthening, stretching and balancing the body's joints. Regular breathing is performed at the same time which aids in providing oxygen to the muscles, and in turn positively affects bodily structures and organs. Th

Weight Loss - Valuable Tips of Yoga
    2008-03-31 00:14:00
Yoga deep breathing helps in increasing the oxygen intake to the body cells, including the fat cells. This results into burning up of fat cells. Another amazing aspect of Yoga is that it reduces anxiety which, in turn, reduces anxious eating. It is human tendency that whenever we are tensed we tend to swallow our food without deriving much satisfaction and pleasure. In the process we end up eating more. On the other hand, if we approach our meals with better mood, we tend to be less likely to overeat in a worried effort to calm our anxieties. Yoga plays an important role in making us more calm and cool. During yoga practise you work your whole body, stretching and toning your muscles, streamlining and firming them. This gives you a lean firm body shape as opposed to the bulkier, short muscles you might get from weight training. With yoga you build strong lean muscle tissue which burn calories even while you are at rest. Yoga is about balance. Balance in eating, balance in drinking, bal

Well I went to my first Yoga class. It was interesting. I can say that I'm all stretched out. We did alot of downward dogs,& my favorite was the warrior. During the class, I kept thinking to myself, this lady is off her rocker. I will have to learn all the terminology, so I can understand what in the world the instructor is talking about. But afterwards, I felt so relaxed and I slept so well, that I will definitely give this yoga thing another try next week. I have about 20 more lbs to loose, and I'd like to have that done by my next birthday in August. Thats my goal. Let's hope I make it!

    Learn the basics of yoga
    2008-03-02 21:23:00
Before becoming a regular practitioner of Yoga, before gearing up your soul to receive the multitude of virtues that Yoga is likely to impart, you ought to know its basic lessons. So here comes the question "what is Yoga?" One has to travel back a giant distance of some 3000 years to trace the origin of Yoga. Yoga had its first cry in the India. 'Yoga' owes its origin to the Sanskrit word "yuj" which means to bind, attach, join or yoke. It is also interpreted as "union, to direct and concentrate one's attention on, to use and apply". Didn't get it yet? In the simplest sense, Yoga is all about establishing a bond between your soul and God, by means of constant concentrating procedures. Indian mythologies say that one's inner self or individual spirit- 'jivaathma' is a part and parcel of the eternal supreme universal spirit- "paramaathma" (simply what we call God!). Once born into this world, we are likely to get unplugged from that master spirit. What Yoga does is balancing our mind, so

    Yoga for beginners in Greece

Travel à la carte have been running yoga holidays in Corfu and Paxos for 15 years. Often the students on the yoga holiday are the same students that the teachers see in weekly classes back home, so integrating beginners can cause problems – especially for the new student, who is asked to play catch up both on the social front and on the mat!As a solution, TALC asked Zoë Reason, who has been coming to Paxos with them for over ten years, first as a student and more recently as a teacher, to devote a whole week to complete beginners.

    Yoga and Back Pain Relief
    2008-02-21 22:12:00
Has chronic back pain taken control of your life? It can, and for those who suffer, it is both mental and physical misery. As one who has had to deal with lower back pain for a number of years, I promise you it is true. A back injury while I was still a teenager changed all of the muscular skeletal relationships in my back and hips. As a result, when I get out of shape and put on a few unwanted pounds, the muscles from my neck to my knees let me know it. Several years past I jogged outdoors, on my gym's track and on my treadmill. For those who can do it, I submit that TV shows on tape and a treadmill session go together like vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce! Zap out the commercials and what's left provides a forty-eight minute warm up, workout, and cool down. Perfect! When joint issues slowed me to walking on the treadmill, this was still a great session but finally the joints won. Not only walking but also other milder forms of exercise like my beloved golf went by the wayside a

What Is Yoga & Its Benefits
    2008-02-21 22:10:00
Ayurveda defines Health as Purity of body, mind and soul, which has become so dark because of negative thoughts and actions and it is here Yoga that comes in handy to treat this state of mankind. With its regular practice one is able to eradicate all the impurities both in mind and body and regulate the self towards GOD. According to the ancient hindu philosophy, Yoga is the union of body and mind which helps one to attain oneness with the "Supreme Being", the ultimate aim of our birth. Regular yogic practice helps to acquire a balanced body and mind which naturally trains him to be in present moment and with a minimum input of energy/time, he can achieve a maximum output of work. Is it not a greater benefit in this fast pace world where one lacks time. Yoga is a combination of asanas (postures), pranayama (breathing techniques) and dhyana (meditation). Gentlemen, guys actually do Yoga.
    2008-02-10 21:12:00
Let's face it, at its first mention; Yoga might not come off as the most masculine exercise. But that's just it-at its first mention. When you delve deeper into it, you will realize nothing could be further from the truth. More males are discovering this and consequently more American men are now flocking to the yoga mats where once, it seemed, only women dared to tread. However the irony is in India where it originated, it wasn't until recently that women were even allowed to practice yoga-that with restrictions still applied at times. Men now make up 25 percent of America's 17 million enthusiasts and this figure is increasing steadily. Perhaps it may be because several successful men in various walks of life attest to Yoga's efficiency and openly advocate its practice. Take Hip-Hop entrepreneur, Russell Simmons for example, when I read he practiced Yoga (just like Sting, Quincy Jones and Woody Harrelson), it further increased my belief that in no time perhaps NOT practicing Yoga will

    How To Heal With Yoga
    2008-02-10 21:10:00
Yoga is a generic term for the various spiritual disciplines in Hinduism and Buddhism. It is practiced throughout South Asia. Its prime aim is to pave the way to higher consciousness through liberation from suffering, ignorance and rebirth.
