| Carlos Zambrano is awesome and yet I complain | | 2008-07-10 08:08:00 | | Last night I missed most of the game due to my satellite going out. It’s frustrating because in the four years I’ve had Dish or DirecTV, it’s never gone out and over the past two nights it’s gone out twice due to rain. That being said, I feel guilty writing about a game I really [...]... | | By: The Cub Reporter | | |
| | Z Ztanding O for Zambrano | | 2008-07-10 00:14:41 | | Game Ninety-One - Cubs 5 Reds 1
WP - Carlos Zambrano (10-3) LP - Johnny Cueto (7-9) Save - Kerry Wood (23)
Carlos Zambrano proved once again why he is the ace of the Chicago Cubs. Zambrano tossed a gem and faced just one over the minimum in 8 strong innings. The Reds managed only 2 base runners, and 1 hit....a home run in the 2nd inning by Adam Dunn, the seventh of his career against Big Z. But that was it. Zambrano settled down and retired the last 20 batters he faced and received a standing ovation in the bottom of the 8th when he stepped to the plate. Zambrano responded to the sell out crowd with a single to center....the Cubs 10th and final hit of the game.
Carlos Marmol retired the first two batters he faced in the 9th before Jay Bruce reached on an infield single. Marmol then issued back-to-back walks to Jeff Keppinger and Ken Griffey, Jr. Lou Piniella brought in Kerry Wood to face Brandon Phillips with the bases loaded. Phillips fouled out to Derrek Lee to end the game.

| | Victor Zambrano anyone? | | 2008-07-08 21:14:00 | | From Mark Feinsand :Scott Kazmir is pitching at Yankee Stadium Tuesday night. Can Victor Zambrano be far behind? In their never-ending quest to find starting pitching, the Yankees plan to send a scout to watch the free-agent righty throw sometime this week, according to a source.Zambrano is infamous for being the pitcher the Mets got when they shipped highly touted prospect Kazmir to Tampa at the trading deadline in 2004.Zambrano, who went 10-14 over three seasons with the Mets, pitched for Toronto and Baltimore last season, but hasn't pitched in the majors this year. After being designated for assignment by Colorado at the end of spring training, Zambrano went 0-6 with a 9.45 ERA for the Rockies' Triple-A club. This guy would be yet another waste.... | | By: The Evil Empire | | |

| Zambrano to the DL....Johnson, Too? | | 2008-06-21 23:00:00 | | The Cubs placed Carlos Zambrano on the 15-day DL retroactive to June 19th on Saturday after an MRI on Friday revealed a minor strain in his right shoulder. The Cubs recalled Eric Patterson to take his place on active roster and Sean Marshall is expected to be recalled on Tuesday to make Zambrano's start against the Orioles. Zambrano will miss at least two starts and some are speculating maybe three turns in the rotation.
Sean Marshall will be in Chicago on Sunday to work with Larry Rothschild in preparation for his start on Tuesday and according to a report from the Tribune, it could be Reed Johnson that is placed on the DL to make room for Marshall. Also, Daryle Ward was assigned to the Iowa Cubs on Saturday to begin his way back to Chicago.

| | Mild Shoulder Strain for Zambrano | | 2008-06-21 00:15:30 | | The Cubs received good news following the dramatic 9th inning win against the White Sox on Friday afternoon. Results from the MRI on Zambrano's shoulder revealed a minor strain and no tear or damage to the labrum. The Cubs stated they would decide on the next step for Zambrano on Saturday.

| | Zambrano throwing more strikes | | 2008-06-01 00:56:00 | | Len Kasper mentioned the other day that Carlos Zambrano was throwing more strikes, which I thought was rather common sense since he was walking fewer, but I wanted to take a look anyway. Sure enough, he’s throwing more strikes than he has in any full season (2001 not included here, 2002 not a full season).
2002: 58.8%
2003: 61.0%
2004: 62.1%
2005: 62.3%
2006: 59.9%
2007: 61.3%
2008: 62.7%
That’s it. Back to the regularly schedule programming.

| Zambrano does not have a stiff shoulder | | 2008-05-22 03:58:00 | | It was mentioned early in today’s papers that Carlos Zambrano was being attended to by trainers for a stiff neck/shoulder. It was implied that his shoulder may be stiff, or sore. That’s not the case as Lou addressed this at the end of his pre-game press conference and brought it up on his own. Zambrano also denied any stiffness in his shoulder whatsoever.
The only other news is actually not news at all. Piniella said a published report that the Cubs are “keeping a close eye” on Carlos Zambrano’s shoulder is untrue.
At the end of his pre-game news conference, Piniella brought up the report on his own, even though he said he had not read it.
“I don’t where all this stuff came from, but I’ll tell you this—Larry Rothschild told me yesterday he had the best throw day he had all year,” Piniella said. “So, physically, there’s nothing wrong.”
So he’s not concerned about Zambrano̵... | | By: Another Cubs Blog
| | Zambrano has a stiff right shoulder | | 2008-05-21 15:07:00 | | Carlos Zambrano has a stiff shoulder or neck, but is still scheduled to make his next start. The Cubs’ medical staff is keeping a close eye this week on pitcher Carlos Zambrano, who has had stiffness in the right shoulder/neck area since his start Saturday against Pittsburgh.
It’s not considered serious at this point and didn’t appear to have a significant effect on his performance in his no-decision Saturday.
Zambrano (6-1), who has minor discomfort when he turns his head to the left, threw a full bullpen session Tuesday and remains on track to make his next scheduled start Friday in Pittsburgh.
Zambrano has allowed more hits per 9 this year than any point in his career, but has also thrown fewer pitches per start in any full season (101). He’s allowing fewer home runs than recent years and also walking fewer hitters. He is striking out fewer as well. So some signs of injury are present, but that would be the case in almost any pitc... | | By: Another Cubs Blog

The Cubs are keeping a close watch on Zambrano this week and he is still on schedule to make his next start on Friday in Pittsburgh against the Pirates.

| | Zambrano Pitch ID’s - And You Thought I Forgot? | | 2008-05-17 20:04:00 | | Thanks to some great stuff from Matt Lentzner at the PFX Summit, I feel like I've nailed down El Toro's stuff. Using home games from 2008 (not today's) and the idea of arm slot = PFX "elipse axis", I dug out five pitches. I think we can quibble on some of the fuzzy borders, and the pitch names, but I think the splits are on target.

| | Zambrano solid, Cubs rebound after 2 losses | | 2008-04-27 04:24:01 | | The Cubs offense jumped on Matt Chico early in this game. The Cubs scored 3 runs in the 1st and added a couple more in the 2nd inning. A 5-run cushion is more than enough for Carlos Zambrano who threw 7 inning, allowed 5 hits, walked 4 and struck out 5. Zambrano’s control wasn’t what it had been the first 5 starts this season. He still managed to shut them down and Wuertz and Lieber pitched the 8th and 9th to get the Cubs first shutout of the season.
It appeared to me, by using the gameday xml file that Zambrano’s velocity was much higher than it has been to this point. He had an average of 92 mph on his fastballs and according to Fan Graphs, his fastball average velocity so far this season is a bit under 90. Zambrano had been taking some off to get the ball over the plate and hopefully he goes back to doing just that.

| | Trend for Zambrano | | 2008-03-18 12:24:35 | | After reading Joe’s post on Dontrelle, I wanted to look at Zambrano. I hear a lot of people call Zambrano an “Ace” and I just have a hard time accepting that. He *WAS* an ace. But he has declined in each of the last 4 years. Why??

| | The State of Zambrano | | 2008-03-18 02:00:00 | | Call him Carlos, or Big Z, or El Toro but the Cubs' pitcher that most often refers to himself in the third person is arguably the biggest key to the upcoming season. Carlos Zambrano is the number one pitcher on the Cubs' staff and possesses the stuff to be a legitimate ace, but he has yet to put it all together over a full season.
From all reports Zambrano has arrived in Arizona much more relaxed and focused than in years past. This spring he has not made any predictions, he left that to Ryan Dempster, and has quietly gone about his business....expect for the little practical joke on Kosuke Fukudome.
Lou Piniella has preached the importance of the Cubs getting off to a good start. With the lopsided schedule, this team must win early and often. One of the key ingredients needed for a successful start is Carlos Zambrano avoiding his early season struggles.

| | Zambrano’s Cutter | | 2008-03-14 05:26:00 | | Fan Graphs, the best web site on earth, has pitch data from Baseball Info Solutions. They show Zambrano’s cutter (scroll to bottom) has gone from 1% to 9% of his pitches from 2005-2007. So, it is true, he is clearly throwing it more (based on this data/methodology etc). It has been, for the most part, at the cost of his slider, which makes me wonder about arm problems, and avoiding them.

| | | Appears Zambrano Contract Extension Imminent | | 2007-08-17 16:12:16 | | The Daily Herald is reporting that the Cubs have called a 10:15 AM (CDT) press conference where they are expected to announce a multi-year contract extension for RHP Carlos Zambrano.
Zambrano, who is eligible to be a free-agent after this season, is presently signed to a one-year contract for a $12.4M base salary, plus another $2M+ [...]... | | By: The Cub Reporter
| | Carlos Zambrano Killed My Buzz | | 2007-05-11 05:10:53 | | I attended my first game of the season Wednesday night and saw the latest episode of Jason Marquis’ serial drama, “I’m Gonna Prove That All You People Didn’t Know What The Hell You Were Talking About,” co-starring Larry Rothschild as The Mentor. It was a joy to behold, so much so that I was almost oblivious to the fact that one of our hitters left nine of his teammates out on the bases.
Anyway, I got home too late to post anything. Now, I’m at the keyboard and in the interim, Carlos Zambrano went out and struck the latest blow in his battle to become our fifth starter. As the game report at cubs.com points out, opponents are hitting .361 against Zambrano in their first-inning at-bats, and Z has yielded 13 first-inning runs in 8 starts. To date, the chief suspect has been arm angle, as in, Carlos’s has been too low or too all over the place. (more…)
